My grandmother on my father's side is Elizabeth Leah Upp. She died around 1968. She was once married to William Karl Bishop. My father had two or three half brothers, one was named Frances. Elizabeth's parents were Uriah Upp and Mary (or Maggie)Alexander. I believe Uriah's father's name was Hezikiah (born sometime between 1794 - 1800). Hezikiah's parents were Nicholas Milton Upp, born 1737 in Germany and Hannah Wolfe, born in 1748. I have hit a dead end trying to find information on William Karl Bishop. I was told that the family name may have been Bishoff or Bischoff then changed to Bishop at some point. Sounds like we may be related. Darren Bishop

I am told they were in Arkansas for a short period of time and I am assuming that that's when she was added to the Old Settler Rolls for the Western Cherokee. They only went as far as Arkansas, before they made their way back to Kentucky.

I just looked through my records, and it was William T. Alexander who stated his mother was Susie Cameron, and father Steven Alexander. He is found in the household of Susan with Issac Alexander who stated his father was Stephen Alexander and mother Susie Gregg. So, I got to nosing around Camerons and Greggs or Alexanders on Ohio death records and found more interesting stuff.

There was a Nancy Cameron (DOB 1846)who said her father was Samuel Cameron and mother Catherine Gregg, and a Mathilda Cameron (DOB 1841) who also said her father was Samuel Cameron and mother Catherine Gregg........both born or lived in Adams County.

We have Susie Catherine Alexander and a child who claims her maiden name was Cameron. Then we find Cameron and Gregg offspring in the death records. I'm wondering if Susannah Catherine Gregg Alexander wasn't also married at one time to a Cameron, and maybe even Samuel Cameron. I think a connection bears looking into somewhere.

Thank you so much, Florence for elaborating on this. So Susan had a daughter named Catherine? That was Susannah's middle name. I remember reading that census and got a chuckle out of the 'gentleman' as well.

I guess I had forgotten about Susannah being listed with her parents, but sort of remember it now. I also remember somebody telling me of Susannah being married to a gentleman named Foster, as I have it in my notes, and it was probably you who shared it then.

I wonder why her two children carried her maiden surname, instead of their father's. Whether both were offspring of this Foster gentleman or either were out of wedlock.

I have found Susannah not only in the 1870 census living next to John Alexander in Wheat Ridge, but also in 1880 in Jackson township of Brown County. I understand that there was some flipping around of county lines between Adams and Brown so seeing her in a different county didn't phase me. She had, in 1880 a grandchild named Emma Gregg, aged ten in the household. (and other Gregg children in Alexander households) That's why I was having such a problem reconciling the family members. You have been a great help, and getting to the Adams County Geneology Society has been on my wish list for several years. It will happen when spring comes, if the creek don't rise.

So, that leaves me with the dilemma of why on Isaac Newton's death certificate, his father is listed as Steven Gregg, but his mother as Susie Cameron. I know there were Camerons in the vicinity, and since I've been researching quite a few years now, surely know you can't always take the informant's word as gospel......but it usually has it's own story of a family connection somewhere.

You've been a great help and very generous with your information and I thank you very much.

I don't know anything about the the Beaver or Hamilton but I do have information about Susan Gregg. I looked her up for a man in Texas several years ago as she was married to a Foster and had a son Robert that is shown as Alexander in the census. In the 1850 census of Winchester she is listed with her parents, John 63 born Md. Occp. Gentleman! Susannah is 26 and has two children George Gregg 2, and Catherine age 9. The census has it spelled Gragg. I have a paper written by a grandson of Issac Newton Alexander and he says he was born July 22, 1857. His mother Catherine Gregg died when he was born. His grandmother raised him alone as his father, Steven Alexander Jr. was killed when grandfather was about 10 years old. The story is that Steven got Susan's daughter Catherine pregnant. She was a little slow. So Susan was his grandmother but Steven was his father. I don't have the other pages of the story on the family but they are in the Alexander or Gregg file at the Adams Co. Genealogy Society. Susan Gregg would have been Benjamin's mother.
Florence in Winchester

Can anyone tell me more about the family of Susannah Beaver and Alexander Cameron? Did they have children, and were any of them girls named Susie or Susannah?

My great grandfather Benjamin Alexander of Brown County had a brother Isaac Newton Alexander. Benjamin died before Ohio instituted mandatory death records. So, I had been looking his siblings death records to find out their mother's maiden name. One or two of them state it to be Susannah Gregg. I also found a marriage license for Susannah Gregg and Stephen Alexander, their known father. After Stephen's death, I find several Gregg children in Susannah's household, listed as her grandchildren. I'm wondering how that could be if Gregg was her maiden name.

The only two plausable explanations would be if she had a male child out of wedlock to whom she gave her maiden name, or she had an entirely different maiden name and she was married and had a child before she married Stephan Alexander and bore him more children. Or a daughter of hers married a man who had her maiden name, and I know they didn't.

When I found Isaac Newton Alexander's death certificate, it states his father was Stephen Alexander, and his mother was Susie Cameron. This could explain a lot of things. So, now I am trying to find out who in Adams county, who would have been born around 1824 would be named Susie or Susannah Cameron. This is where I am hoping to make a connection. Then I can procede to see if there are any marriage documents between a Cameron and a Gregg.

Edward Lawrence Cummings was my Great Grandfather. He married Narcissus Alice Moore. They had 7 children...Dora, Mary Ethel, Albert Edward, Fred Ray, Shirley Milton, Martha Alice and Anna Ruth (still living). Albert Edward was my grandfather. He married Mary Margaret Holliday and they had 3 sons...Milton Edward, Charles William and Jimmie Lee Cummings. Milton "Ed" was my dad. He married Edith Davis. I have extensive records for the other children of Edward and Narcissus. I also have records for Edwards parents (and sibblings)...Milton Cummings and Harriet Osman, and, Milton's parents (and sibblings) William Cummings and Gulamus Slagele. the Cummings family had one of the first registered farms in Adams County and there is an Adams County Forefathers Association that holds a family reunion each September.

She married Norman Baker and lived in Norwalk. In the 1870 census a Jennie Adams was living with Benjamin Randall Wheeler and his wife, Julia, in Greenfield Township.

Son of Thomas C. Cooper II
Born 1771, married Abigale Unknown, moved from VA (now WV)to Adams County, Ohio, about 1805, later to Schuyler County, Illinois by 1830.

I do not believe his move from VA to Ohio was direct but may have gone first to KY or IN.

Known children of Thomas and Abigale are
Joel, b. 1807 OH, m. Mahala Unk
James, b. 1822, m. Isabel Unk

Other probable children are
Isabelle, b. 1800 KY
Polly, b. 1801 KY
Thomas IV, b. 1818 IN

I have been unable to prove that Thomas III was in Adams County or to definitively link these children to Thomas and Abigale although circumstantial evidence is ample.

I did find a Thomas Cooper, son of Samuel and Nancy (Groom) Cooper, who moved into Adams county from Scioto but he remained in OH.

Any help finding out for sure where Thomas III went when he left WV and in linking him with his children will be so very greatly appreciated.

I am no relation, just trying to help. I found this death cert online for a George Custer Wells, Mont Co OH with the same birth date and the same death date only 1946, not 1936. His wife's name was Grace. He is buried at the same cemetery. so I think this is your George Wells & either you typed in the wrong info or someone has given you the wrong info. I also found a WW1 draft notice for a George Wells with the same birth date, bor West Virgina (same as on the death cert) in Iowa state. Also found one George Wells on the 1915 Iowa census. I don't think it is coincidence that the birth date is the same. I think this is the one & same person. I am attaching them to this e-mail.

Thanks Sharon Karns
skarns3@cox.net

I'm wondering how you fit into the CANNON family of Adams County, OH. I've done quite a lot of research on this family, and might possibly be able to help you.

I was wondering if you have any info about the following: Minerva N. Hughes who married (1) James DUNBAR and (2) Jeremiah A.B. CANNON. Minerva and James had a son, Edward Alven(Alvero) DUNBAR. This Edward A. Dunbar m. a Florence (Flora) HORN.

Have you heard of any of these people?
Grace Bell Forthyse Wells Davis in Ohio 1886 - 1956

I am looking for information on Grace Bell Wells Davis.

Born most likely in Ohio (possibly Peebles, Ohio) - Feb 2, 1886.
Buried in Willow View Cemetery, Northridge, Dayton, Ohio on May 16, 1956

Grace was believed to be born as Yellow Moon Running Horse - full Cherokee Native American. She later was named Grace Bell Forthyse. She married George William Wells (sep 3, 1886 - feb 8, 1936) and had one son, also named George William Wells. Grace had a daughter named Audrey with a different spouse, and could possibly have had additional children. She later remarried under the name of Davis and therefore buried as Wells Davis.

Any information that might be found on Grace Bell Forthyse (1886-1956), George William Wells (1886-1936), or any details affiliated with them would be extremely appreciated.

Adams Co. Schools-- One Rooms, Catholic, etc Update

Many people have asked why I have not included One-Room Schoolhouses, Catholic and private schools, higher education schools, and schools still in use on my website

http://www.oldohioschools.com/adams_county.htm

Now people are going to have the chance to sponsor a school they would like to see added.

This website was my final project for my master's in education degree in 2008. I had to limit the scope of this project to schools which are demolished, abandoned, or closed and reused in some way. I have also added "endangered" schools as ones that will fall into one of the first three categories after current building projects/levies are finished.

I am offering a school sponsorship for $5.00 per school listing for those who would like to see their cherished one room, Catholic, or still-in-use school added to this site.

As you can see from the site, the main information I need is:
School Name
Location (exact address if possible otherwise road or intersection is good)
City or Township
Year built (major additions are also noted here)
Year closed OR year Demolished
If closed, then current use is also needed (i.e. abandoned, private
residence, church, etc).

I can also put up to 4 pictures for each one.
1. The Main picture-- if currently standing I like this to be what it looks
like right now. If gone, then the best known picture of it.
2. I can link the BUILT year to another old view of the building.
3. I can link the DEMOLISHED or CLOSED year to the school actually being
razed or what it looked like at the time it closed.
4. I can link the *Gone* to an empty lot view of what the current site looks
like or link it to another website, for example if it is now a church I can
link the *Church* to the church's website.

I put over 5000 miles on my car each summer traveling around getting photos and I just recently had to upgrade to a larger server because I have so many schools state wide featured.

If you are intersted in sponsoring a school listing for your county, please contact me at aaronturner@neo.rr.com

I will also list your name, if you want, as a sponsor under the picture. Again $5.00 per school for a permanent spot on the site. Thank you for your interest and I will begin building a spot for your school as soon as I hear from you.

I have friends who are Shiveners (matter of fact, saw them earlier tonight, and I have helped them with research on the family.

Becky Reed
reedrja@yahoo.com

There are many Shivener families from that area and I am trying to talk with any of them. The main connection I am looking for is John M Shivener, abt 1849, born in PA. His father was Casper Shivener, abt 1815. A couple of John's children were Floyd C Shivener, 1892, and Elizabeth, 1890. Most of these are buried in East Liberty Cemetery, Lynx, Ohio. John married my g-aunt Mariah Copas. There are other marriages with the Shivener family so I would like to talk with any of the Shiveners to try to get to know the family.

Millard Copas
mbcopas@cox.net
