I am interested in exchanging correspondence with descendants/relatives/researchers of those who served in the 70th OVI -- with four of seven companies raised in the Adams/Brown Co. area. I am working on an annotated history of the Regiment based on actions in which my Great Grandfather, John C. Nelson, participated, to pass along to my grandchildren. Would be prepared to share all my research in exhange for confirmation of any memorabilia -- photos, letters, reports, etc. -- in which he might be shown or mentioned.

Looking for cemeteries in the town of Ellsbury on the Brown/Adams County line. Looking for the grave of Henrietta Shelton / Lowe who died on June 25, 1909. Her late husband's Civil War pension records states Henrietta was buried "AT A PRIVATE BURYING GROUND IN BROWN COUNTY AT THE VILLAGE OF ELLSBURY". Looking for any suggestions as too what potential cemeteries in this area - that would have been used 100 years ago. Thanks! Mark

I am searching for descendants of an Elijah and Mary LOW/LOWE who were listed in the 1880 Adams Co Census, Bentonville. Their children were listed as Ellen, Vertie and Byron. Also, living with them in 1880 was a John HIGLE. I believe John to have been married to a Rachel LOW/LOWE at one time. Although I have found nothing to substantiate that. John b. abt. 1820 in Maryland. Rachel b. abt 1831 in Ohio. Rachel was the daughter of Kendall and Elizabeth LOW. I believe John to be my gg grandfather. I have reached a dead end with this family. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Abandoned Pioneer Satterfield Cemetery

On a recent visit to Adams County I was given information about an old abandoned cemetery at the back of a farm on Poplar Ridge Road. I went and visited with the property owner who was somewhat reluctant to let me visit the cemetery. He told me that it was very overgrown with weeds and infested with snakes. My persistence paid off and I walked up a weed covered hill for about a 1/4 mile and couldn't find anything. Then I noticed through a pile of brush a 10' high granite monument. While walking through the weeds I noticed several smaller tombstones and many that were knocked over. The large monument had the name of Wesley Satterfield Born April 11, 1811 Died January 1, 1889. I took pictures of some of the tombstones. There was a William Crawford, Martha Satterfield, Wilson Santee and Meredith Grooms. If the weeds werent so thick I'm sure there would be more. Does anyone know how you go about protecting a cemetery from this type of abuse? What rights do we have as family to visit these cemeteries? I believe that this cemetery needs recorded. I would appreciate any input.

John bro and sisters. Harrison returned to SC, was in Ohio. 11 Nov 1907, John Hamilton by S .Y. Hamilton, Macon, Ohio.

Our particuliar branch of the Hamilton family in America begins when a John HAMILTON of Scotch decent left Jentry County, Ulster, Ireland about 1795. [Jentry County which I cannot find , must of meant he came from ' Gentry' which means his status or class was high. He and his family came by boat to the New World. He is described as a man small in stature and a weaver by trade. They were on the high seas for six weeks. On the voyage two of their children died Polly and Robert. When they were landing at Charleston Harbor ,South Carolina, the older son William fell overboard but Provdentually he was pick up by some pleasure seekers and was delivered to his parents immediately on their landing. John stayed in Charleston about two years and then immigrated to Ohio early in the 19th. century bringing all of his family except Charley who setteled in Tenn. One son Hanson returned south to live. It is thought that he settled in Clinton County. Why did John's family come to America well we don't know for sure but in 1774 addressing the Lord Lieutentant Harwood on the subject of the linen ruin, said the result is the ruin of Ulster and the flight of the Protestant population to America. So, it was the ruin of the linen trade by England who protectedt hem in the enjoyment of all they have, which helped to give to America her so-called Scotch Irish population. And we do know that John Hamilton was a weaver of linen. John came to Adams County Ohio in about 1800 from Charleston, South Carloina. John was in the first trial jury in Adams county he was one of twelve men;, the case was about larceny of a hog this is found on page 90 Histor y of Adams County Ohio by [Evans andStervers] . John was buried in Lawshe Cemetery Adams County ; head stone missing. On page 457 History of Adams County John HAMILTON was one ofthe first settlers in Scott Township he settled west of Tranquility. It says on page 469 History of Adams County that John Hamilton was one ofthe early Deacons of the Baptist Church on Soldiers Run in Tiffin Township, Adams County Ohio. Some of this information above came from a letter which I copied was found in some old family records, and some from History of Adams County Ohio dated 1900 written by Evans and Stivers. John Hamilton, Sr., of Scotch decent, emigrated with his family from Ulster in 1795. Described as "a man small in stature," and a weaver by trade. They were on the high seas for six weeks. The entire family removed to Ohio just after the turn of the century, excepting only Charles, who settled in Tennessee. It is thought that the family first settled in Clinton County. In 1774 addressing the Lord Lieutentant Harwood on the subject of the linen ruin, said the result is the ruin of Ulster and the flight of the Protestant population to America. [sic] John Hamilton was a weaver of linen. John was a juror in the first trial by jury in Adams Co.; the case was about larceny of a hog (Evans "History of Adams Co." p. 90) John was burried in Lawshe Cemetery but the headstone is missing. John was one of the first settlers of Scott Twp., settling west of Tranquility (ibid., p. 457). John was one of the early decons of the Baptist Church on Soldiers Run in Tiffin Twp. (ibid., p 469) "I will try to put a stone up for him as he is our first in our family in America." He won gold in the 5 km and 10 km runs, but his final medal came when he decided at the last minute to compete in the first marathon of his life.

Zátopek was the first athlete to break the 29-minute barrier in the 10 km run (in 1954). Three years earlier, in 1951, he had broken the hour for running 20 km. He is widely considered to be one of the greatest runners of the 20th century and was also known for his brutally tough training methods.
Biography

[edit] Early years

Emil Zátopek was born in Kopřivnice, Czechoslovakia on September 19, 1922, as the sixth child of a modest family. When Zatopek was 16, he began working in a shoe factory in Zlín. Zatopek says that "One day, the factory sports coach, who was very strict, pointed at four boys, including me, and ordered us to run in a race. I protested that I was weak and not fit to run, but the coach sent me for a physical examination, and the doctor said that I was perfectly well. So I had to run, and when I got started, I felt I wanted to win. But I only came in second. That was the way it started." Zatopek finished second out of the field of 100. After that point, he began to take a serious interest in running.

A mere four years later, in 1944, Emil broke the Czech records for 2,000, 3,000, and 5,000 meters. He was selected for the Czech national team for the 1946 European Championships. He finished fifth in the 5K, breaking his own Czech record of 14:50.2, running 14:25.8.

Zátopek (right) running in 5 km in 1952 Olympics.

Zátopek first entered the international athletics field at the 1948 Summer Olympics in London, winning the 10 km (his second race at that distance) and finishing second behind Gaston Reiff from Belgium in the 5 km.

The following year Zátopek broke the 10 km world record twice, and went on to better his own record three times over the next four seasons. He also set records in the 5 km (1954), 20 km (twice in 1951), one-hour run (twice in 1951), 25 km (1952 and 1955), and 30 km (1952).

He won the 5 km and 10 km at the 1950 European Championships and the 10 km at the next European Championships. Two weeks before the 1956 Summer Olympics, Zátopek had a hernia operation, but nevertheless finished sixth in the Olympic marathon. Zátopek retired from athletics after the next season.

At the 1952 Summer Olympics in Helsinki Zatopek won gold in the 5 km and 10 km runs, but his final medal came when he decided at the last minute to compete in the marathon for the first time in his life and won. He also broke the existing Olympic record in each of the three events. His victory in the 5 km came after a ferocious last lap in 57.5 seconds, during which he went from fourth place to first while Christopher Chataway, now second after being overtaken by Zátopek, tripped on the curb and fell.

Zátopek's running style was distinctive and very much at odds with what was considered to be an efficient style at the time. His head would often roll, face contorted with effort, while his torso swung from side to side. He often wheezed and panted audibly while running, which earned him the nickname of "the Czech Locomotive." When asked about his tortured facial expressions, Zátopek is said to have replied that "It isn't gymnastics or ice-skating, you know." In addition he would train in any weather, including snow, and would often do so while wearing heavy work boots as opposed to special running shoes. He was always willing to give advice to other runners. One example he often gave was to always be relaxed and to help ensure that while running, gently touch the tip of your thumb with the tip of your index or middle finger. Just making that slight contact would ensure that arms and shoulders remained relaxed.
Grave of Emil Zátopek in Rožnov pod Radhoštěm

Later years

A hero in his native country, Zátopek was an influential figure in the Communist Party. However, he supported the party's democratic wing, and after the Prague Spring, he was removed from all important positions and forced to work in a uranium mine as punishment. Zátopek died in Prague, after a long illness, in 2000 at the age of 78. He was awarded the Pierre de Coubertin medal posthumously in December 2000.

Family life

His wife Dana Zátopková (born the same day as her husband) was an outstanding athlete in her own right in the javelin throw. She won the gold medal in the javelin in the 1952 Summer Olympics and the silver medal in the 1960 Summer Olympics.

Emil is the great great uncle of Travis Zatopek.

Quotes

* "Essentially, we distinguish ourselves from the rest. If you want to win something, run the 100 meters. If you want to experience something, run a marathon."

* "I was not talented enough to run and smile at the same time."

* "It's at the borders of pain and suffering that the men are separated from the boys."

* Upon winning: "But it was the finest exhaustion I've ever felt."
While walking through the nature preserve in Adams County, I found a grave site with four head stones on what looks to be an old homestead site. The patriarch of the family was a Neil Campbell, died 1868. Being the history buff that I am, I'm trying to find out who they were. The headstones read, they were from Argyleshire, Scotland. I've so far found a great deal of information on the Campbell family decending from Scotland but nothing on this particular family.

I would like to send it to it's natural biological descendents since I am only related to the Crawfords through the marriage of my GGGrandfather, William H Wright to Hettie A. Wright. It was passed down to me inside of the pages of our family Bible and there are no survivors to tell of it's origin and I would like to get this page into the proper descendents and family member.

I am currently researching the family of Samuel Potts and Catherine Templer in the Adams County, OH, area. Although Samuel Potts died in 1847, the family remains there and is located in Franklin Twp early on and later in Bratton Twp. up through the early 1900's.

They had seven known children; Martha Potts who married Clinton Taylor abt. 1863, Amanda Potts who is believed to have married Robert Ludwick abt. 1857, Nancy C. Potts who married John M. Gore on 9 Sep 1861, Emily Potts whose marriage is unknown if any, John T. Potts whose marriage is unknown if any, Townsend Potts who is believed to have married Mary Ann Langford, and Lydia Ruth Potts who married Alfred R. Fulton in 1867 in Highland County. There may be an eighth child but details not known at this point.

If anyone locally can assist in gaining knowledge of marriage dates for any of these children (who were born between 1834 and 1847) it would be greatly appreciated.

Contact me at chartemp@aol.com if you are interested in assisting with this project. I would also be interested in visiting with anyone related to this family.

Would like to know if the James, Jacob, and Abraham Freeland of the 1820 census for Jefferson, Adams Co. are related to the Aaron of Tiffin, Adams Co. It appears that Abraham and Jacob are sons of James, living next to him. Could James be brother of Aaron and a son of Benjamin Freeland Sr. of Greene Co., PA? I believe that Benjamin had a son named James, but I can't find out what happened to him. I'm trying to sort out the early Freelands of York Co., PA and Baltimore Co.,MD.

I am trying to establish who Elias A. MONTGOMERY's parents were. He seems to be connected to the family of Margaret & Samuel MONTGOMERY of Adams Cty. This is what I know: He was born abt 1828 in Ohio, Elias' first married Mary Ann Baird the 17 Sep 1877, they are on the 1850 Adams Cty, Green Twp. census with son Joseph W. Elias may have been illegitimate and raised by Margaret & Samuel MONTGOMERY. He may have some connection to the Gifford family of Adams County according to recent DNA testing. Elias was in Warren County and married to Clarisa CLARK by 1860. Please contact me if you have any information. Kathryn

He has only one son, Franklin, mentioned in the Biographical Sketch of Hamilton Dunbar in the History of Adams Co. by Evans and Stivers.

Are there any other children that anyone knows about?
