Looking for burial or homestead information or leads for Thomas & Anna Mateju (Mathews) between 1887 to 1896. Originally from Bohemia & Catholic. Thomas died approx. 1893? Family lost homestead. Children were split up and placed with area farmers as farm hands. Family lore says their children were born in Lakota ND and that Thomas may have been buried in Park River But I can't verify. I've checked online archives, cemetery info online and BLM database, but I'm not finding much info. I'm trying to find the info for a friend's father (Thomas was his grandfather)Any info appreciated!

Lakota is in Nelson County, ND (which is adjacent to Walsh County).

Thank you for the information, unfortunately, they aren't the Mathews I'm trying to find. They were still in Wisconsin & not married in 1885. The latest info I found says they were homesteading on property about 5 miles east of Lakota, so that takes out the Wells County property

Are you familiar with burials in 1890's? I've not found any records for his burial approx 1892 and I'm wondering how common it was for someone to just be buried on their land, nothing official etc.

In the area "about 5 miles east of Lakota" is Williams Township, Nelson County. William and Maude Mathews and their children are listed in the 1920 census in Williams Township (which can be found by going to: www.familysearch.org, under "Search Records" choose "record pilot search" and fill in the last name "Mathews" and location "Williams,Nelson,North Dakota,United States.) One of their children, Maude, was born in 1881 in Wisconsin.

Regarding burials not in cemeteries. By the late 1890's I don't believe there were many of those around here. But, there seem to be a signficant number of burials which weren't recorded with the county/state. Many of the cemeteries in the Lakota area still haven't been transcribed and posted on the web.

Does anyone know where the Park River Cemetery is located in North Dakota? They were Catholic but where else could they have gone to church? I wrote to St. Mary's church and the only record on file there was Mary's birth and baptism.
The years after 1900 they lived around Chippewa Falls Wi. and Eau Claire. I have not found Annie's death either.
Any help?
