Chris,

Please grow up. Embrace the FACT that you are not descended from Red Iron. But, take heart, there is very good evidence that our family IS directly related to Chief Running Walker. If you want to know more, email me. Do you want to see documentation? Or, are you going to continue to buy into the "oral tradition" crap you've been fed for the last 30+ years? I can show you where that doesn't add up as well. Your choice my friend.

Thank you for the information. I had not seen the website you linked in your first response. The photo from the funeral mentions Harvey Walking Eagle. I wonder if it is the same fellow?

The book by Mr. Strootman is one that I already own. We were lucky that he wrote this volume when he did. Most of the records that he used for reference are no longer in existance. The VA fire in the 1970's wiped out most of the service records for the WW2 Army vets.

Thanks again for responding!

By the way: while looking for Mr. Walking Eagle and your grandfather's unit, I came across the following:

History of the 363rd Infantry: One Regiment of the 91st Division in World War 11. by Ralph E. Strootman. Publishedf 1947 by Infantry Journal Press. Original from the University of Michigan. 354 pages.

Your grandfather is listed by name in one entry (can't read the page online, though), and Walking Eagle is included, too.

I see used copies of the book are offered for sale online, and copies are in many University libraries.

Have you "googled" "Harvey Walking Eagle"? I found a website documenting the lives of Native Americans. Included are photos of the family of a Harvey Walking Eagle who served in WW11. Here is the link:

http://magis.creighton.edu/

click on "photographs", then "Native Americans" , then "Crying for a Vision".

I am looking for anyone whom might have information on the whereabouts and life of T/5 Harvey Francis Walking Eagle. He was from St. Francis, South Dakota, and served in the 91st Division, 363rd Infantry Regiment, Medical Detachment in World War Two. He earned a Bronze Star in 1944 during the Rome-Arno Campaign. I have heard that he was full blooded Sioux. He was a buddy of my Grandfather, Haskel M. Reels; having served together in the same unit. Any information would be deeply appreciated.

Chrisi wrote, "I know I am of Sioux Indian descent, ... the blood comes from my great-grandmother's side. ..."

Chrisi, you have four great-grandmothers. Is the great-grandmother who may be of Sioux descent the mother of the grandmother who is giving you the information?

Do you know when and where your grandmother (of the Sioux line) was born? It may be possible to identify your great-grandmother if you can provide your grandmother's name at birth, and date and place of birth. If this grandmother &/or her mother are still living, you may not want to provide this information on the message board.

Looking for a lead, a clue, a hint on a Linotype operator (typesetter) name of Russel Nelson reported to have worked in Ft. Yates c. 1920-21.

He was 22-23 yrs. old at the time and born in PA. Was there a boarding house in Ft. Yates or other Nelson family in town?

Read a couple years of Ft. Yates newspaper microfilm from the period and found no mention of him (surprising as the paper was so chatty).

Was there another print shop in Ft. Yates area at that time? Could have been a commerical operation or a school, church mission, institution that printed their own material. Have heard the Standing Rock Res. may have had their own paper. I asked my grandmother about this, and all I could discover was that the blood comes from my great-grandmother's side. However, I have no idea how to contact her, and I believe her and my grandmother (mother and daughter, respectively) are not on speaking terms (I have a dysfunctional family). I believe my great-grandmother's married name is Boehme. If anyone has any information, or any ideas on how I might find out more, please let me know. Thanks.

Old family stories say my great grandfather had two Lakota sons from a marriage in the Badlands before he married my great grandmother.

Or is it coinsidence, that the name Littlesolder is used by separate families? I find no other tribes using the name Littlesoldier.

I have a picture of a Sioux Indian woman whose name was "Susie Kills A Hundred". In the picture are two other people my grandmother Margaret McCain and her mother Laura Viola Basim McCain. My grandmother was holding a Sioux doll made by "Susie Kills A Hundred". The picture was taken in Rapid City, South Dakota in 1907. I have been trying to find somebody who might know something about "Susie Kills A Hundred". My grandmother was 3yrs. old when the doll was given to her and she gave me the "Sioux doll". I still have the doll. I would like to hear from somebody if they have any information concerning this matter.

Hi:

If John C. Turner's father's name is James Turner, he may not be the John Turner I am looking for. The John Turner (age 25) I am looking for was living with his sister, Bridget (Turner) McCarty in Garryowen, Jackson County, Iowa on the 1870 census. My John would also have an additional sister named Julia and a brother Edward who was my great grandfather. At this time, I am speculating that their parents were John and Rosanna Turner who resided in Jones County, Iowa in 1860 and 1870

I do have John C. Turner's Obit wiitch did not tell me much as far as parents and where in Ireland he came from, and census information from 1880 on til his death in 1922. If you have additional information to provide that his father is James Turner, I would appreciate it along with information on Luella Jane Turner.

One additional question; what is the relationship of Agnes Rogers to John C. Turner's family. I believe her maiden name is Hughes. She was considered a daughter in John's obit. She also was in attended to Mary A. Turner's husband's funeral services

Thanks for any assitance.
Patrick Turner
LaDouceur is a relatively common name in North Dakota, particularly in the northeastern part of the state. I believe that the LaDouceur name is usually associated with Metis (French Canadian-mixed blood, usually Chippewa or Cree) but also now and then with Santee and Yanktonai Sioux (the eastern bands), less often with Lakota (western Sioux).

There are many Ladouceurs in the Pembina County ND region, that might be a good place to start looking. Good Luck!

My grandmother Sophia Dybing bought a farm outside of Watauga in 1917. Grandfather Dybing had died when they owned a homestead in Presho, SD. Decendents of grandmother and grandfather Dybing's ten children now live all over the U.S. Grandmother sold the Watauga farm sometime after 1924 and initially moved with her new husband to California. Have any other family members contacted you? A lot of information about the family in the U.S and Norway is available. Another message mentioned Charles and his wife Stella Dybing. Charles was a son of Sophia and her first husband.

Hello,
I saw your message on Ancestry.com and thought I'd let you know that my aunt Evelyn LaBelle Tester was married to my uncle Clyde Tester and they put together a sort of family history in 1979 (they lived in Minnesota) which traced a bit of both the LaBelle family and the Tester family. Maybe you already have a copy of this, but if not, I'd be happy to put it in the mail to you.
I've been searching the Tester family (my maiden name) to put a genealogy together. All the best, Katherine St. John in Salt Lake City

Hello,

Chief Red Iron (Mazasha) was a great (to the 5th) grandfather of mine. I'm interested in connecting with other descendents of him, or his tribe.

I was at Traverse Des Sioux in 1995 when the had a commemorative in his honor. My great aunt was one of the speakers. About 15 years earlier, my mother traced our family tree to discover that he was part of our lineage.

Looking forward to any response!

What a creepy reply. The reason I am asking is simply to settle some inconsistencies in our family history. When I posted the original message, I was just starting my research and was looking for a "jump-start". But, since the posting of my original message, and with the gracious help of the Sisseton-Wahpeton Sioux Rez (of which I am a registered member), a newly discovered cousin, and a Professional Genealogist, I have received my answers. Thanks for your interest. Are you related to any of these familes?

Hello everyone,

I am just looking for someone who can possibly tell me what this says in Sioux, if it means anything at all...

I have written phonetically what I heard recorded... if you need to hear it spoken, I can give you a link to the song it was sung in and you can hear the words as they are spoken...

Here is my best effort in writing what I heard, since I am not in any way familiar with this dialect... I just believe that it is a form of the Sioux language...

"say-dam-man-oh-yey hey-dam-man-oh-yey yey-hey"

Because it is being sung, it is very hard to know when one word stops and one word starts... so anyway, even if one word or the possibility of a word is found up there through the combo of those sounds, it would atleast give em a starting place... thanks!
I have a wonderful photo postcard of a Sgt. J.C. DEMOUTH who was at Fort Yates, ND. I think it was about the time of the Spanish-American War because Fort Yates was only active from 1874-1903. He was a Sgt in Co "H", 12th Inf. Photographed in dress uniform; photographer was a Mr. Gilbert of Mandan, ND.

Does anyone know how I can find military records for Fort Yates to try to get more info on this soldier? I would love to find a descendant of Sgt. DEMOUTH so that I can return this wonderful photo. I'd be glad to e-mail a .jpg file if anyone wishes to see it. Please e-mail me directly at aweca12962@aol.com. Thanks.

Carol AWE from Waukegan IL

I'm a writer looking for burial records and/or a grave site for a Hunkpapa Lakota chief and member of the Standing Rock Indian Police named Joachim Crow King (Kangi Yatapi), who died near Ft. Yates in Sioux County, ND on April 5, 1884. He was supposedly buried at the Catholic Indian Cemetery at Ft. Yates (St. Peters?). His daughter, Emma Crowking, married a man named Paul Cournoyer, and eventually settled in Armour, SD, where she died in 1908. The Cournoyers had a child named Christie who died in infancy, and is also buried somewhere at Ft. Yates. Does anyone have information on these people that they would be willing to share? My research is at a standstill.

Many thanks.

My grandmother, Sarah HANCOCK Keehan, was born in North Dakota in 1889 just days before statehood. There is some question as to just WHERE in North Dakota. My father's birth certificate says his mother, Sarah HANCOCK Keehan, was born in FT. BATES. There does not appear to ever have been such a place so I am guessing it was FT. YATES. To add to the mystery, no birth certificate exists for her in Sioux County, ND for the years 1888, 1889, 1890. Sarah's mom and dad were Mary MULLAN (from Ireland) and Lawarence HANCOCK (from Virginia, USA). At my web site (link below) there is a picture (old and beat up) of Sarah under the heading "4th of July". It is all I have of her. Any information on HANCOCK, MULLAN, FT. BATES - YATES, ETC. will be greatly appreciated.
Happy searching.
Mary Jo
I would be looking for a marriage record of a woman b. @1927, who was Blackfeet and Irish, and married @ 1952, to a carpenter, Blackfeet and French. By 1971, they had six children, 3 sons and three daughters. Their eldest was a daughter b. @ 1953. Relatives raised this girl, during her highschool years, in a nearby town. I'm hoping to make some connections with anyone familiar with this senario. If anyone has looked at Souix County Catholic records, please tell me where I can view them also. Many thanks.

They supposedly ran a trading post at the Fort or nearby. Would like to know how to find information on such a trading post, and where or if any records were kept at that time. Would like to exchange information on the Jones and Smith lines also. Thanks for your time.
