Thank you for your help I did order death certificates and put up memorial pages on Find a grave. I found Grace (Howard) Stoyke and her brother Riley Howard at G A R Cemetery but I was unable to locate Grace's husband Eugene Stoyke. There was no death certificate issued for him there. He still lived at Devils Lake in 1940 but he must have moved on. I thought as I had to pay for the info from the cemetery index I may as well get the whole death certificate for my money.

I am seeking information about the death date and place and burial date and place of Peter and Caroline "Carrie" (Pettie) Haley. Peter was born in New York in 1840 and Caroline was born in New York in about 1841. They were married in Steele County, Minnesota in 1868.

According to "North Dakota History and People, by Clement A. Lounsberry. Vol. 3. 1917.", Caroline died in Devils Lake in 1910. Peter died 15 April 1916 at Devils Lake. I think it is safe to assume that they are both buried at the Devils Lake GAR Cemetery, but I have no proof. Are they buried at that cemetery? Can anyone verify any of this?

Thanks!

Gary Jacobson

Looking for Grace (Howard) Stoyke's and her brother Riley Howard burial location. According to the paper in Clare , Michigan where her family resided she died around the month of Dec in 1936 in Devils Lake, North Dakota and was buried there. She was born 10 Aug 1884 in Lapeer, Michigan and she married Eugene Syoyke in Douglas, Wisconsin 28 Jul 1903. Eugene was born 11 Nov 1972 Germany and was still living in Devils Lake in 1940. They also lived in Empire and Clare, Michigan before moving to Devils Lake. I would also be interested in his burial location. They don't appear to have had any children. Riley Howard was born 9 Apr 1875 Lapeer, Michigan and was also still living in Devils Lake from about 1920 to 1940 after that it's unknown whether Eugene or Riley still lived in Devils Lake but I think it's likely that they are there to.

Continued from Ramsey County Centennial book, page 332: (dated 1983)

Upon their arrival, they put the covered wagon on the ground and set up housekeeping. It was here on September 14, 1882 that Clara Nees, the first white child born in Ramsey County, was delivered with the aid of a midwife. By fall, they moved into a dugout located a few feet from the present house. Poles needed for the dugout roof were made from trees cut and hauled from Sweetwater Lake twelve miles away.
In 1886, Mathilda died. Later Grandpa married Anna Hoistad who had come from Fargo to join her family. She later told Dad about her arrival on July 4th, 1883 on the first train to come to Devils Lake. The Minnie H was docked near the railroad station. As the passengers crowded to one side to see the train arrive, the boat almost tipped. By 1894 when Oliver was born, the family had a two room house. With later additions, it developed into the 'homeplace' as it is today.
Dad married his childhood sweetheart, Anna Anderson of Churches Ferry, in 1916. They settled on the homestead which he had bought when Grandma and Grandpa moved to Fertile, Minnesota. My brothers, Morten and Paul and I grew up on this farm that we fondly called the 'homeplace'. In our combined families, there are eight children and six grandchildren.
Mom and Dad were always very active in the community. Social life centered around the De Groat School and the Chain Lakes Church during our growing years. I have fond memories of my school days, the De Groat Community Band, soft ball teams, box socials, parochial school every summer, church bazaars and lutefisk suppers in neightborhood homes, the annual 4th of July picnic and the highlight of the summer -- the great Ramsey County fair!
My husband, Ted Mitchell, and I farmed in Dry Lake Township from 1942 to 1950 when we returned to California. Mort and Joyce have lived on their farm since they were married in 1941. Paul and Helen bought the 'homeplace' in 1969 but rented out the land until 1980 when their son, Peder, started farming and is now settled there with his bride Maren. It is heartening to know that a fourth generation will carry on at the 'homeplace'.
From generation to generation there are good years and bad years, lifestyles change but one thing always remains constant -- every year is a gamble.
Dear all descendants of Caroline & Magnus, Sander, Peder, Carl Martin, Clara and Sigurd, all from beautiful Næs in Maridalen Norway.
It appears by the messages in Ancestry. com that you have good knowledge of your ancestors.
Carl Martin was a grand uncle of my mother and my brother and I have vague ideas of several visitors from America in our early childhood. Now with help of some notes from Helge R Ness, I try to make a picture of what happened to all in our family that went to America. If you have a family tree and / or pictures, I would be more than happy to exchange information.

Best regards Turid Nilsen
turid.nilsen@ntnu.no
Hi, cousins (I presume!)Just a few corrections to your interesting post!
Mary Grace Hearsnep Keogh was the 6th daughter of William Hearsnep and Lousia Hockett. James was their only son. Louisa was from Lockport New York and I believe they were married there in the 1830s. They moved to Kinkora, Ontario around 1842, where they farmed and he became the village's First Postmaster.
I would love to know more about the Lady Grace Barton connection and the name of her husband. There's an interesting story there!

Hunter Family Lived in Ramsey County Also Benjamin Gates

Hello,

Seeking information on the Hunter family who lived in Devil's Lake and Grand Harbor. James A Hunter (b 1863 Canada) wife Amanda (b 1874 North Dakota) and daughters: Hazel (b 1892), Alpha (b 1894), Eryll (b 1902), Lorraine (b 1906). Hazel is of particular interest, she very likely was married to my husband's grand uncle, Benjamin G Gates (b 1891 Iowa). They can be located in the 1920 US census in Devil's Lake and in the 1925 North Dakota State Census. Hazel appears in 1930 living with her parents but her name is reflected as Hunter although the census reports her as being married. If anyone has additional information assistance would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Roberta
A relative found out from a priest at St. Mary's in Munich, who I believe is also the weekend pastor at Assumption, that the Peter-Paul records were kept at Assumption.
I am looking for someone that is familiar with Assumption Catholic church in Starkweather and can tell me if the parish register for St. Peter and Paul in Webster (no longer in existence) is kept there. I was told that it is but do not have confirmation of that. Also, if the records are there, would someone be willing to check two records for me? (1.) A 1906 funeral for Eliza (Thompson) McMillan (Mrs. Hugh McMillan) who died abt 23 Feb 1906, and (2.) a baptismal for Margaret McMillan b. Dec 1898, parents Hugh and Eliza McMillan.
thank you,
Dan Harvey
Snohomish, WA
email: djjr7744@comcast.net

It is difficult to read the name as the writing is very light / faded. Here is how I read the form:

Lemhi County, Idaho Sept. 12, 1918

Emil gustave Bethke
Permanent home address: Salmon, Lemhi, Idaho
Age: 42
Date of Birth: January 21, 1876
White, naturalized citizen
Present occupation: butcher and laborer
Employer's name: Leord [hard to read] construction Co., Salmon, Lemhi, Idaho
Nearest relative: [this is difficult to read] J??i? Sullivan. Might be Jenie? Julie? Julia? in parenthese after the name it looks like it might read: Friend
Address: 423 Anaconda Road, Butte, Montana
medium height, stout build, blue eyes, brown hair

I searched through the Butte 1920 census for a likely match, but didn't find anything conclusive.

I have tried my best using all variations of first name, initial, last name, year of birth, location of birth and etc. and don't find him in the 1920 or 1930 U.S. census records.

The most complete one is by a woman named Sandry Bethke.

Emil's WW1 draft registration was in Lemhi County, Idaho. He died in 1949 in Montana.

I suggest you get a month subscription to view the trees and to perhaps correspond with the owners / relatives.

Beth

Thanks Beth, for the added information. It was excellent, because I had never seen the mother's maiden name before the info you sent.

A son for Emil and Georgine died in 1914, and both parents are listed on that record.

Emil Bethke left his wife and children before 1915 - a school census at Jamestown I found online showed that the only parent was Mrs. Georgia Bethke.
I think he went to Montana, and I was wondering, if you have ancestry.com subscription, would you look at the WW1 draft registrations, and see if you can find him in Montana?
He may have lived in Montana, but registered in Idaho.

Thanks,
Taryn

I am trying to find out more information about this family, specifically the origins of the wife, Georgine. She is married to Emil Bethke, a German immigrant who came about 1892? Georgine later was called Georgia on the 1920 census. By 1920 her husband had left the family and Georgia and the kids were living in Stutsman county, at Jamestown.

Georgine/Georgia's father was born in Norway according to the census, her mother in Minnesota, but Georgia was born in North Dakota, and died in Stutsman county/Jamestown.

Name: Georgine Bethke
Birthplace: North Dakota
Relationship to Head of Household: Wife
Residence: Devils Lake Ward 1, Ramsey, North Dakota
Marital Status: Married
Race : White
Gender: Female
Father's Birthplace: Norway
Mother's Birthplace: Minnesota
Family Number: 94
Page Number: 4
Household Gender Age
Spouse Emil Bethke M 34y
Georgine Bethke F 29y
Child Ernest O Bethke M 10y
Child Wilbur C Bethke M 8y
Child Gladys Bethke F 6y
Child Emil G Bethke M 4y
I've contacted the cemetery records in DL (call the court house) several times and received obituary copies of family I've researched. They're quite fast about helping and will mail what they find to you without cost. Good luck.

Can anyone tell me about this church? My great grandmother was buried from there in 1906 according to her obit. The church records I have been told are at St. Mary's in Munich, but they are unable to provide information from them. Maybe the records did not cover the period prior to 1906? Does anyone know anything about these records?
Any insight would be appreciated.
Dan Harvey
Snohomish, Washington
email: djjr7744@comcast.net

Sorry, no information fits with the Murphy families (there are 2) listed in the books. I don't have marriage records. These are family histories submitted by the families. You would need to contact the county for marriage records.
