I know of a school in the area called the Hammel School. My grandfather attended it in the early 1900's. It was near Hannover (an unincorporated area west of Center). I have an image from I would guess circa 1908. My grandfater is pictured in it and looks to be around 10-12 year old. Mrs. Bigelow is not named in the picture. Others named in picture: Kargas, Albers, Hammel, Flint, Rabe, Henke, Hintz, Bornemann, Krauth, Plenge, Wolff, Breimeier, Maier

Evidently these 50,000( not all Olivers) Englishmen were undesireables.

Sarah Heskett and her son Lawrence both died in 1914 and are buried in Community Cemetery in Oliver County, ND. If you would like the URL, let me know.

Ambrose, Harry, and Harold Heskett are found on the 1920 census of Marion County, Illinois. The website below says that Ambrose died there in 1925. One confusing fact on the 1920 census is that Ambrose supposedly was divorved, although Sarah had died in 1914.

I found a marriage record for Ambrose and Sarah Sleven in Brown County, Indiana. They were married 22 June 1879. They are also on the census record of Brown County, Indiana, in 1880. They have a daughter Nellie who is 11 mos.

His parents were Levi and Elizabeth Poulton Heskett.

My gr. grandfather was Harry Lea Heskett who lived in Oliver Co. while growing up. He managed a pool hall in 1917 in precinct 7, Center as stated on his WW1 draft registration. I know he was also an operator of a ferry at some point and was known for bootlegging and getting into trouble. In 1917 he had a wife and child. In the 1910 census he was living in township 143 with his parents Ambrose and Sarah Heskett. His siblings were Fila, Lina, Larry, William, Clarence, and Harold. I know one of the sisters was a teacher on a nearby reservation. Any information about the Hesketts listed here would be appreciated ! rashelbraun@aol.com

The book is based on research of all Olivers during the time when Hugh and Margaret OLiver were trying to find the ancestors of Hugh's gggrandfathers family .They searched the early history of the United States researching census , deeds, etc looking for Olivers and trying to make a connection to Hughs family , it is 572 pages of Olivers .Census records from 1790-1850 , for Virginia, Tennessee, NO. Carolina, So. Carolina, Kentucky, Indiana, Illinois, Missouri, Georgia, Mississippi and Alabama ....

Hotchkiss is a name associated with Sanger, ND.
All of the Hotchkiss deceased are according to Oliver County records as buried in the Sanger Cemetery.

I am interested in what booklet you have? Oliver County has a large History Book put out in 1885 and a supplement that put out in 2000. I know which one you have. There are two more since then. "Oliver County History from 1885 to 1985" has about 1000 pages and the Supplement from 1985 until 2000 has around 100 pages.

As you travel east of New Salem, ND, to approximately 61/2 miles east to the Judson or Sweet Briar Interchange. You will go off to the right and then take a left, traveling north (on a 1 mile paved and then graveled Morton County Highway # 84) )for 8 miles and 3 miles in Oliver County.....a total of 11 miles north............turn right (east) for two miles and then a right (south) for two miles. The cemetery will be on the left side as you are traveling south. There might be a better road but this might be the easiest to follow. Is there anyone in particular you are looking for. In early years, some people were listed as Rosebud but were Lutherans and buried in Churchtown, which is not too far from there.

Guenthners from Russia to Dakota

Does anybody have any information on these Guenthners? They were originally from Russia and came to US (Dakota Territory) in 1893. Seemed to have settled in Oliver County.
Matthias (1860-?) and Katherine Bauer (1869-?)
Their Children were:
Matthias (1890-1819) my g-grandfather, Margaret, Theophil, Amalia, Freida, Henrietta, Rosania, Lena, Louise, Adelheid, Fred, and John.
Please let me know if you have any of these names in your family tree.
There are other Guenthers that lived close by. They are all probably related, but I have been unable to link them.

Sarah Maude Wetzel, b.06/25/1891, married Edgar Flattin, had three children, Agnes, Edgar and Mabel. On 09/03/1920 she married Harvey Good in Bismarck, ND. Harvey Good of Clarisa, Minnesota, a barber, opened his shop in Center, ND, in 02/1919. On 07/13/33 Harvey Good purchased a vegetable farm five miles west of Mandan, ND. His children were Allen and Clell. I have no further information.

That is interesting. That is about the year he would have died, but I need to check that to know for sure. Catherine (and I am not sure if that is with a K or a C) are burried next to each other. I have another grandparent burried there and I think his name was either Philip Klug or Anton Freise or Freiz. I also have other Emineth relatives burried there. What kind of a cemetery book do you have?

I am looking for information on the family of Therese Kokkeler. The homesteaded in Oliver County in the 1880s. Therese married William Kottenbrock of Glen Ullin. I would appreciate hearing from anyone researching this surname. I have information on the Kottoenbrock family that I would be more than happy to share.

Looking for information regarding James O. Kyser m. Rose Altha Cleveland 10-2-1894 and lived near Hensler, North Dakota. They had no children, however, family said there were children from her previous marriage. Need dates of death and whereabouts of burial for both James and Rose. Appreciate any help. Thanks.

Lukin Family, Oliver Co 1900

Am searching for members of the Ole and Anna (Evenson) Lukin family of Gaines, Oliver Co. ND. Anna Lukin was born in Norway and emigrated to the US around 1870 with her father and step-mother and other siblings. She married Ole Lukin in the vicinity of Fountain, MN and migrated to ND where she had a number of children including John for whom I have some information and Emma, the eldest. I have one photo of her and her young family from around 1900 and a postcard with a Gaines ND postmark. Also a census record from 1910 listing Emma as head of household, her parents and younger siblings. Would love to find descendents of Anna Lukin. pameladavies@yahoo.com.

WOODBURN Ford Husfloen, 83, died Monday. (MARION CO.)

He was born in Price, N.D., and was a construction worker and member of Immanuel Lutheran Church. He moved to Woodburn in 1948.

Survivors include his sister, Elva Hendry of Stanton, N.D.

Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at Belle Passi Cemetery. Arrangements are by Cornwell Colonial Chapel.

I know some Emineth family quite well . The father, who is now deceased was Martin Emineth married to Mary Hatzenbihler. He has a son who lives about 7 miles east of Center on Highway 25 and has a daughter, who is married to Tim Geiger, who lives right here in Center.

I just talked to Eugene Emineth's wife, Laverne. They don't have an e-mail address but would like to know more about your relationship.

The Klugs I knew were from Mandan but don't know the father's name. I know Mike and Kenny Klug....

That book is very hard to find because only a certain number were published. It could be reprinted but the cost would be around $10,000. because of the minimum amount that has to be printed.

Are you related to the Smith's?

There are no family histories in the Oliver County booklet that I have. It is only 24 pages with lots of photos.

I did not see any of those names mentioned in the booklet. I am not from the Oliver County area but I found the booklet in my father-in-law's things. I do not know if any books on the Walker family has been published.

My husband is the GG Grandson of Rose and Loran T. Gregory.

Rose died 17 Feb 1936. James died 17 Mar 1936. Both are buried in the Hensler Cemetery in Hensler, Oliver Co., ND. I have a picture of the headstone which I'd be happy to scan and e-mail to you if you are interested or need additional information.

A headstone is in the middle of a field to the north of the Henry Gerving homestead. The headstone is not far from an old earth home that is very old. The headstone has these names on it.

Hi - I'd love to have you check the book for any reference to Havens, Walkers, Billings, Murrays or Einingers.....

Also, around 1975 I was traveling through Center with my father and we stopped to visit with a "cousin" - I think her name was Stephanie Gullickson (related to Ruth Walker). She had just published or was going to publish a book about the Walker family and/or about the county - do you know of it? I'd love to have a copy.

Thank you. Thoughs you list from the cemetary were my mothers family. All total there were 16 of them. 2 were stillborn but as they were twins of one each that lived we always count them.
