George Kreidt Family
In 1880, Mr. & Mrs. George Kreidt came to America with their two sons, George and August. They first lived in Des Moines, Iowa for three years. In the year 1883, they came to New Salem with the first settlers and started farming five miles west of New Salem. Their son, George, was killed in an accident working for the railroad early in his life. August Kreidt married Katherine Grube in 1901.
August and Katherine had five children: Christine (Mrs. Charles Waechter), Mrs. Betty Miller, Katherine (Mrs. Ed Muggli), George Kreidt, and Rose Marie Arnold.
They farmed until 1921, when they moved into New Salem where August was postmaster for 14 years until the time of his death
Their son, George, moved back to the farm in 1935, which had been rented out until that time. George moved back during the depression and dry years. He married Gerda Heid in 1938 and they had two sons, Gary, and Gene. George and Gerda farmed, milked cows and raised chickens until 1976 when George had to retire due to his health. Gary then took over the farm.
Gary was born February 22, 1941 in New Salem, attended rural grade school and graduated from New Salem High in 1959, he married Judith Gaebe on September 4, 1960, they have five children, George, Bryan, Heidi, Gary Dean and Timothy.
Gary has been administrator at Elm Crest Manor in New Salem since 1976, his son, George, farms with his father and the rest of the family helps out. Heidi married Randy John and they have one daughter, Amber Marie.
