The attachment is what my grandmother wrote about her grandparents...everything she knew about their heritage. The beginning part about Fritz is:
My grandfather, Fritz Grube was born in Westfallen, Germany September 2, 1848. Aunt Margaret, his youngest daughter had the family history traced and found that grandfather was of welsh and scottish ancestry. During the American Revolutionary
War an ancester from Delaware, who was Welsh- Scottish, was a colonel in the american army. He was taken prisioner by the Hessians and taken to Germany. If the British had captured him, they would have had him executed.
I dont' know anything about grandfather's family or his life over in Germany, only that he was away from home from the time he was seven years old. He worked as a goose herd. He went to school and learned to read German, but didn't learn to write. When there was writing class, he was teaching the younger children to read.
He came to the united States when he was 15 or 16 years old. Many young men left Germany befor they were seventeen to avoid serving in the army. Every young man had to serve in the army for three years when they reached age 17. They were so terribly mistreated in the army, so they left if they could. I presume he came over on a sailing vessel, and was on the ocean six weeks. The food was poor and water scarce, so many people became ill. I don't know if any relatives came when he did, but did have a sister in Gavelston, Texas. I think he landed in Texas when he came to the States. Later a nephew of his, William Grube, Came over and lived in St. Louis, Missouri.
So the question there is if anyone has any info about his sister or nephew.........or maybe knows which town he was from originally.
With George the question is if anyone knows more about his brothers. My grandmother states that he had 2 brothers who originally settled New Salem, ND with the German Evangelist Synod. She only knew their Initials, but states that those were the brothers. I am pretty sure that I have found one of them. The other one is more difficult because there are 2 with the same name, and both came over at about the same time. I think one is a cousin but not sure.
thanks :)
