Was there a local newspaper in the area of Tower City in 1909? And would it be on microfilm somewhere or online?

My great-uncle, William Meyer / Meyers / Mayers lived in Tower City & the area. His brother, Carl, came to the US in 1909 to visit their sister, Wilhelmine Meyer Krause in Oshkosh, Wisconsin according the passenger list of arrival in NY, NY on 1 June 1909.
My thinking is if he traveled all the way from Germany to visit his sister in Wisconsin he would have gone on to ND to see his brother. I am hoping to find a notice of his visit in the local newspaper.

Thanks for any help.

Obituary Look Up - Fred HOLMBERG, died March 1976

Hi, I'm hoping someone can look up an obituary for Fred HOLMBERG, who died in March 1976 according to the Social Security Death Index. Also per the SSDI his last residence was Fargo, Cass County, North Dakota. He was born in Sweden March 26, 1889 and immigrated to America around 1911-1912. I believe he could be my Grandfather's brother, Anders Ferdinand HOLMBERG. My cousin remembers visiting him and going fishing at a lake in the Fargo-Moorhead area. That would have been in the late 50's probably. They called him Fred. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

You can email them at this address archives@nd.gov and tell them the date and the Fargo Forum.
They will mail you a copy and bill you $5 for the copy and postage (a really good deal)

I thought about George all day/night yesterday/today wondering about his death. He was never in the service so he wouldn't have been in a Soldier's Home. Thank you also for the link for to get the death certificate. It was a question I was thinking about also. In fact I was going to try to find the email address for Riverside Cemetery to get more information on him. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!
Ginger Walls
Red Wing, MN

Hi,

I don't think you'll find death certificates for them. Death certificates weren't required state wide until 1893 and the law was repealed in 1893 and re-enacted in 1899.

I searched for them in the North Dakota, Dept. health, Public Death Index, https://secure.apps.state.nd.us/doh/certificates/deathCertSe... but didn't find them.

A William J. Thompson, case #64-444 who died Feb. 20, 1891, Berlin, ND did have a probate case or record. It's filed at the North Dakota State University. Go to library.ndsu.edu/db/probate/ for additional info or to order a copy of the file. Successful Searching!

I'm not related but I have read your posts here and on the other boards. It certainly does appear that Milton Engel died between 1910 and 1920. Since Carrie only went to ND in the last couple of years of her life he was likely in MN. One possiblity since he was a livery man is that he was in another state delivering a load. That is what happened with my grandfather who lived in ND and died in SD.

In looking for more information I have found that the Otter Tail Genealogy Society, related to the Otter Tail Historical Society, will do research in their records and files on a family for $20. per family. If you aren't near Fergus Falls it might be worth it. they might be able to come up with an obituary for Milton. Here is their information:

http://www.otchs.org/Affiliates/GenealogicalSociety.html

Hope that helps,
Barbara

It appears as if he's buried in the Cass County Cemetery. I found his name in a cemetery book at the Fargo Public Library. The cemetery is located on the far north end of Fargo (near Trollwood Park it appears). Some references say it's the pauper cemetery. I'm not sure if that's the case or not.

I found a small article in a Kansas newspaper, The Atchison Daily Globe, Atchison, Kansas. The spelling of the last name varies from what you have posted, but I assume it is the same family:

Thursday, July 5, 1888

News Notes

Lightning struck the farm house of Ole Olestad, ten miles north of Hunter, Dak., the other night, killing Olestad and his wife. Their baby was found alive in the house by neighbors who forced an entrance twenty-four hours after and found the bodies of the parents.
---------------------------

Now that I found that one article, I did a search for the name OLESTAD and found other articles:

Kansas City Times. July 5, 1888

Casselton, Dak., July 4.---

Husband and Wife Struck Dead.

Lightning struck the farm house of Ole Olestad, ten miles north of Hunter, this county, Friday night, killing Olestad and his wife. Some neighbors passing the house Saturday evening noticed the foresaken appearance of the dwelling, and forcing an entrance found the terribly mutilated bodies lying on the floor. The only child, an 8 months old baby, was on the bed uninjured. The building had caught fire from lightning, but a heavy rain prevailing extinguished it. Olestad had sent for his father and mother only a few weeks previous and they arrived from Norway yesterday in time to participate in the funeral.
-----------------------------

The news of the tragedy was printed in newspapers across the U.S.

Beth
not related

I am hoping someone can help me by locating an obituary for an Ellen Marie Underdahl (husband: Joseph O.) who died February 26, 1921. She died at St. Luke's Hospital in Fargo, North Dakota.
I have her death certificate but no cause of death was listed. Was that common during that time?
Appreciate any help!

https://secure.apps.state.nd.us/doh/certificates/deathCertSe...

You chould be able to find them using the database. It only works for 10 years at a time. Just type in Oliver for surname and it will give you all the Oliver's all over the state.

HI,
That is AWESOME!! We found the brother Alex and have connected. Obviously, Pearl gets a checkmark.

Could you work your magic and find a death date for Pearl & Joyce. Then I could send off to Dakota library for a photo copy of obits. They were so informative back then and it might mention the boys.
THANKYOU
Heather.
