William Thomas Perkins 1858-1947 resident Bismarck, Burleigh County, North Dakota

NOME AND SEWARD PENINSULA BIOGRAPHIES AND STORIES
pages 255-256
COLONEL WILLIAM T. PERKINS
Colonel William T. Perkins has been identified with the Northland since 1898. He is not only a prominent citizen of Nome, but he is a prominent citizen of Alaska. He is associated with the leading commercial and transportation company of Northwestern Alaska, occupying the position of auditor of the Northwestern Commercial Company. This company has exploited many avenues of the natural resources of Alaska and Siberia.

Colonel Perkins is a native of Buffalo, New York and was born November 2, 1858. He is the son of Nathaniel Perkins and Annette Hawkins. He is a descendant of Revolutionary sires and is a member of the Washington, D.C., Society of American Sons of Revolution. His early education was obtained in the public schools of Buffalo and Lockport, New York. He prepared for college at New Hampton Institution, New Hampshire, in 1877 and was graduated by Bates College of Maine in 1881 with the degree of A.B. In 1884 he was graduated from the law department of the University of Michigan with the degree of LL.B. He has been admitted to the bar of Michigan, North Dakota and Alaska. He began the practice of law in North Dakota in 1884 and continued the practice of this profession until 1896. From 1892 until 1896 he was Vice-President of the First National Bank of Bismarck, North Dakota. For a period of two years after 1896 he engaged in mining in Colorado. He came to Alaska in 1898 and followed mining for two years. In 1900 he arrived in Nome and became the General Auditor of the Northwestern Commercial Company, a position that he still fills. He is also attorney in fact in Alaska for the managing director of the Northwestern Siberian Company, Limited.

Colonel Perkins has received a number of political honors from his friends and party. In 1888 he was elected as one of the first aldermen of Bismarck, North Dakota and was a member of the Board of Education and its secretary at Bismarck for a period of twelve years. In 1889 he was elected to the office of County Superintendent of Public Schools of Burleigh County, North Dakota and held this position during his residence in this state. He took an active interest in both local and state politics in Dakota. He was selected as a delegate to the Republican national Convention in Chicago in June 1904 and was one of the first delegate s to represent Alaska in a Republican National Convention.

Colonel Perkins took an active and a leading part in education work during his residence in Dakota. He was President of the North Dakota Educational Association in 1895. He was commissioned Colonel in the National Guards of North Dakota in 1892. In May 1903, while in Seattle, he was elected as Chairman of the Executive Committee selected to make the Alaska arrangements for the reception of President Roosevelt. At the time of the visit of the United States Senators who were appointed by Congress to inquire into needed laws for the purpose of determining the best legislation that could be enacted for the district, Colonel Perkins was selected by the citizens of Nome as the Chairman of the Executive Committee to entertain the Senatorial Committee.

Colonel Perkins is a member of the Protestant Episcopal Church. He is a thirty-second degree Mason and Deputy for Alaska of the Inspector General for Washington, Idaho and Alaska, of the Scottish Rite and Noble of the Mystic Shrine. He is a Past Grand Commander of the Ancient Free and Accepted Masons of North Dakota and Past Grand Commander of the Knights Templar, North Dakota. He is also a member of the Artic Brotherhood, Camp Nome No. 9, a fraternal organization that has its home in the Northland and at the last Grand session of the order held in Seattle in November 1904, he was elected Grand Artic Chief.

It will be seen from this brief and hasty narrative that Colonel Perkins has had a very active and busy life; that he has stood and stands high in the estimation of his fellow men with whom he has come in contact; that he has been called upon to fill many positions of civic and fraternal honor. While he has taken an active part in politics he does not belong to the genus politician. He is a man of unquestioned and unimpeachable integrity and his interest in politics is simply the interest of a good citizen desiring better and cleaner government. His native intelligence has been polished by education. He knows his capacity and limitations, so that he does well whatever he undertakes to do. No citizen of the Nome country commands more of the public esteem and public confidence than does Colonel Perkins.

He was married December 16, 1994, at Denison, Iowa. Mrs. Perkins was formerly Katherine Laub.

Hello,

My name is Shawna, my maiden name is Leben. You said you could ask an older friend for information about the residents of Wilton? I realize this was years ago, but Ill give it a try anyways.
I have family who came to the Wilton area in the 1890s. Wilhelm/William Leben and his wife, along with whom I THINK was his brothers Gustav and Carl Emil Leben and their families. Gustav is my GGgrandfather and moved on with his family to Oregon around 1899 or so. Gustav then died in 1902 of an accident, leaving a widowed wife and 8 kids. His son Herman is my ggrandfather. I knew him, but he died when I was a child, along with his son, my grandfather and sadly along with my father. I have little to no family here that has any answers.
I was hoping if you friend was still in good health that she may remember the family of her neighbor William Leben. He is related to the Killian family also. I am hoping to find some form of evidence that my Gustav is in fact related to William Leben of Wilton, and what that relation is?
I would appreciate any help you could offer. Thank you so much.
Shawna King
donandme@gmail.com

I've been doing genealogy since I was 14 years old and found a lot of information on my side of the family, but with my husband's I knew some names and NO dates. So I didn't have a lot of info to go, I've finally collected information on his family by pure luck. When I posted this thread I barely had info, was hoping that a descendant of Thomas & Veronica would reply or like all places in North Dakota a centennial book was made with info in it & someone could copy the info. I use 3 German websites that I've collected some information from Odessa , blacksea and the 3rd I can't remember right now.

When you post, it is important to post specific criteria on those persons. Their DOB's, POB's, ect are important. ALSO important is information on what you ALREADY KNOW. Your Ancestry profile does not include any posted family trees...but indicates you have a membership in Ancestry. That to me would "indicate" you have census data. BUT, a lot of volunteers don't look or don't know how, so you open yourself up to a lot of information that is totally worthless, wrong, or what you already know. The more criteria you post, the more you leave the amateur without a potential to screw up your info.

I also see a Russia connection. A LARGE number of Germans had immigrated into Russia in the late 1800's/early 1900's to escape German religious persecution and unwarranted military servitude. As the 20th century advanced, the Russians began drafting this group into the military, thus a LARGE amount of these persons emigrated toward central US, specifically the Dakota's, Minnesota, Iowa.

What you may know about the parents of these immigrants might "fit" into a lot of known genealogy. A large percentage of these persons were Mennonites.

After doing the below, I see your posting was back in october. Hopefully someone had already responded.

The 1920 census of Dickinson, Stark Co, ND
Mathias Pisha, age 63, born in Austria, immigrated 1875
Frances, age 50, born in Austria, immigrated 1880
--both naturalized in 1890 (probably based on his naturalization date as the wife had no citizenship by herself until the 1922 Congressional "Married Womans Act." which gave woman their own citizenship rights.
Anna, 25 (1894/1895)
Paulina, 19 (1900/1901)

The 1940 Census for Dickinson, Stark Co, ND
Mathew Pisha, born in Born in Bohemia, widower
Emma L (respondent), age 44, born in ND
Jerome J Meiske, age 38, son-in-law, born in ND
Pauline (dau of Mathew), age 39, born in ND
--a "potential" Jerome in the 1930 Census of Dickinson:
Jerome Obrigewitch, age 28, born in ND to both parents born in Russia
John, father, age 60
Daphne, mother, age 58
Katherine, 22
Marcus, son, 17

I did a NUMBER of searches for this family and the reported 1940 husband, Jerome Meiske, without further success.

About the only resource I found with credible potential was the Dickinson library:
http://www.dickinsonlibrary.org/
If they can not research for an obit, they might have a potential POC. Since these Pisha died so many years ago, the potential for finding an obit is limited. First, there had to have been a newspaper. etc....

Sykes burial (date of death identified as 2002)
http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=sy...;

The Social Security Death Index:
Milton F. Sykes, born 17 June 1928, died 21 Aug 2002. "last residence:" Bismarck, Burleigh Co, ND
--The "last residence" on the SSDI is NOT necessarily where a person actually lived or died. The Social Security Administration calls it simply the "home of record." It is not necessarily where any benefit was paid to the person, survivor, or the lumpsum death benefit (in 1972 was paid to anyone paying burial expenses, family member, funeral home, city/county, attorney). It is sometimes the location where the notification of death was sent to the SSA, sometimes where the lump sum death benefit was sent.

Obit
http://bismarcktribune.com/news/obituaries/milton-sykes/arti...
