Nettie Wolverton Gaylord was the daughter of Charles and A. L. (likely used Louisa for her everyday name). She married Duane Gaylord, born in Iowa, and had a sister, Rose A. Wolverton, born PA 1863. They all lived at Ft. Buford in Montana on the 1880 US Census. Rose A. Wolverton was a 17-year-old servant in a home not far from the Gaylords at Ft. Buford in 1880. Nettie and her children later lived in Miles City MT. Nettie named her own daughter after her dead sister, Rose A. Wolverton, who died at the age of 18-19 in Miles City. Rose's findagrave.com Memorial is #88331651

Charles is my great great grandpa. His son, Ehlert was the father of my grandpa (Edwin Pagel). The reason Lydia (Ehlert's wife and Edwin's mother) wasn't listed as living in the household was because Ehlert had her put in a mental institution so he could divorce her. Unfortunately, Lydia lived the rest of her life there (I have documentation if you would like to see it).
Edwin married Helen Wolf and they had 4 sons and 1 daughter. Here are their names listed in birth rank: Carol, Robert, Kieth, Kevin and Lynn. Lynn is my father. They all still around Hettinger ND except for Kieth who lives in the Fargo area.
From the family history I have heard from my parents and aunts/uncles (About Charles leaving because of a feud) I believe your Charles is the same as my Charles. If you would like more information just let me know. My email is alexandralpagel@yahoo.com
Also any information you could give me about Christian and Johanna Pagel and/or the family feud I would like to know. I have been to Germany twice before and plan to go back to visit the area's of my ancestors and would like to know as much about them as possible.

Thanks!

I am not sure. The information I have only indicates a Margaret McManigle so it could be either the mother or the daughter or both. I would suggest trying to obtain the church records for more information. Patrice Hartman, Hartsearch Genealogy

South Fork is a township name. I believe Margaret is buried in the Cedar Creek Cemetery or Prince of Peace located in Section 20 Township 130 Range 91 or South Fork Township. There is no marker but a local historian indicated she is buried there. The church records might be available at the ELCA Archives or other church archives.
Seek death/obit for Edward Root Hillis born 1851 Seneca Co., Ohio to John and Sarah (Cummins) Hillis.

We have family notes that Mr. Edward Hillis came to Attica, Oh to visit relatives/family reunion on Dec. 24, 1908 and left Jan. 1909. He will be
58 years old the 16th day of April.

He listed his present address as Gillstrap, South Dakota and said when he changes it will be Edmonton, Canada. Is Gilstrap in SD or ND???

Sometime between Jan 1909 and 1910, I think he died as I cannot find him in the 1910 census records. Now thinking maybe he died in Gilstrap before he could move.

thanks, bonnie
I see in another post you said he bought property in Perkins county South Dakota. Perkins County is right across the border from Adams County North Dakota. Gilstrap is right on the state line, in North Dakota. You might try finding the land records from the property he bought, since it should say when he sold it.
You might contact the county office here, to see if they can tell you if they have the records or who does
http://doh.sd.gov/vitalrecords/County/Perkins.aspx

They moved from
Wisconson to North Dakota with their two sons Henry (my great grandfather) and Elhert (Butch) and farmed in Adams County, Lemmon Township in North Dakota. My mother has documentation from research my uncle did in years past to connect Charles with the family in Wisconsin. I hope this is helpful.

Perhaps I best leave this place to the pros. I am looking for info on Nettie Melissa Wolverton (maiden)born 1859 in PA who married Duane N Gaylord born 1846 in Wapello Co, IA in Miles City, MT in 1878. They are the parents of Elizabeth Alice Gaylord who was born there in 10 DEC 1888. Elizabeth met a man called Nathan Ross St. Marie. They were married but spent most of there time in Adams CO, ND. They are my grandparents. (maternal line) I am specifically looking for the death record of Duane N Gaylord. He was born in IA in 1846. He and Melissa lived in Miles City. I am told by long gone family members that he died i some sort of accident that killed many people in Mar of 1894. I have checked for obit records in IA and MT. I have looked for fires, floods, train and mine accidents near Miles City at that time but can find no list of the dead or of the wreck. I seem to recall a train wreck but that is not certain.

This family seems to be very hard to track. Did Lulu adopt the children out after Nicholas died?

Another family tree at ancestry indicates Raymond's name is Maxfield instead of Maxwell.

Additional information found:
1880 Census District 102 Ft. Buford, Wallette Co., Dakota Territory
Duane Gaylord, 34, servant, clerk in dry goods store, b. Iowa, father b. Maine, mother b. Ohio
Nettie M., 21, wife b. PA parents b. PA

1900 Census Miles City, Custer Co. MT
Nettie M. Gaylord, head, b. Nov 1859, 40, widow, b. PA, father b. New Jersey, mother b. Massachusetts, runs boarding house
Elvira L. Gaylord, daughter b. Oct 1881 b. MT, seamstress
Rose Gaylord, daughter, b. Jun 1883, 16 b. MT
Lizzie A. Gaylord, daughter, b. Dec 1888, b. MT

1910 Census Miles City MT
Nettie Gaylord, 50 b. PA, runs boarding house
Louise A. Gaylord, daughter, 28, school teacher
Elizabeth A. Gaylord, 21, salesman? -census very difficult to read so this may be incorrect in terms of occupation

in 1920 Nettie is listed with her daughter Elizabeth St. Marie in Hettinger ND.

I did search the ND Death index for Nettie but didn't find a record for her. However, the Death Index does not allow soundex searches so you must try every variation of spelling for a surname.

I did find a couple of family trees online for Duane Gaylord but they all list his death in 1894 in a train wreck near Kalispell MT, not Miles City. Since I'm not a relation of the family, I can't tell you what is correct. I did a brief search for train wrecks around Kalispell but could only find a huge wreck that occurred there in 1901.
I have an ancestor who died in the early 1900's in ND while working on the railroad-he was crushed between 2 cars. I'm not sure what the position was called, but men getting crushed between cars was very common when attaching cars to the trains until a saftey mechanism was invented. Could your ancestor have had a job like that and died in that manner, instead of a crash? I only mention it because train wrecks usually created big headlines in the local newspapers and you said you hadn't found anything.

Hope this helps.

Did a quick search for Nettie Melissa Wolverton. Found the following:
1860 Census Springfield, Erie Co. PA
Charles Wolverton, head, 30 yrs, harness maker b. New Jersey
Louisa, wife, 27 b. CT
Louisa 7
Lizzie, 5
James 3
Nettie 6 mo.
All children b. PA
I couldn't find the family in any census after 1860 in the US, even using soundex searches. Also searched for Nettie using both Nettie and Melissa as the first names, but no luck. A Charles Woverton showed up in Civil War soliders of PA who enlisted in 1863 but no way of knowing if it was the correct one as the information was limited-just enlisment date, no age or residence. I don't know how far back the information you have on your faily goes, but if Charles Wolverton died, most likely his wife would have remarried and she and the children might belisted under the step father's name.
I did search for the other children in 1870 and did find an Elizabeth and James Wolverton living with a George and Elizabeth Kenning? (the image was hard to read so the ssurname might be incorrect) in Battle Creek MI. The ages were in the right ball park and both were born in PA, so they might be Nettie's siblings. I searched up through 1900 for Charles and Louisa Wolverton but didn't find them.
As for death records, North Dakota didn't really start recording deaths until around 1905 and those are spotty until 1910. I don't know when MT started recording deaths. You said that you had looked for accidents, etc near Miles City, so I'm assuming that you checked local newspapers for those.

Hope this helps.
Kathie

Do you have any idea where these people might have been born-at least a state or a country if outside of the U.S. or where they died? Any known death dates? Are Wolverton and Gaylord married names or maiden names? If married names, do you know their maiden names and can you provide that information? Where does the MT come in-did they move there?

Thank you for your input. I have found the burial information for this family. Thank you for making it available. Here is the story on the Charles Pagel I am looking for.

My gg-grandparents Christian and Johanna Pagel had a son Charles, born about 1862 in Pommern, Germany. He immigrated with the family in about 1862, settling in Marathon Co., Wisconsin. He was with the family for the 1870 and 1880 censuses. However, the older Pagel children, including Charles, were listed as born in Wisconsin which is incorrect and there was an issue in the 1880 census with Charles's age. The only other information we have is his sister's story that "Charles went West and was never heard from again."

The Charles Pagel I located in Adams Co. ND through census searches is the best fit I've found to be this same Charles Pagel. To date I have not been able to find a full birthdate for him, or naturalization info that might give a birthdate or any church records that provide it. He was raised Lutheran and the records available from the church he was raised in have been searched without success.

I found an online genealogy of the North Dakota Charles and Ida Pagel family that provides her parentage, etc., but nothing for his parentage. This might indicate a family rift, which would go along with hints of one from family stories.

I have been working with an elderly cousin who is the grand-daughter of Charles's sister, Auguste Pagel Goetsch (I am a great-granddaughter) and a recognized expert on Germans from Pommern, especially the Goetsch family. She produced, after taking up her mother's pre-computer days research, a massive genealogy published as "Goetsch Roots and Branches in 1982. However, long-story-short, she is not able to travel and no longer has computer access and I have been trying to help her with this years long search for Charles via Sunday evening phone calls. I live in Washington state, she lives in Wisconsin, so anyone can see the problem as far as doing on-site research. Two weeks ago she told me of the Charles Pagel mystery and that led me to the North Dakota Charles Pagel. It would be so nice to find a piece of documentation that proves or disproves this man as the one we are looking for. Linda
I do not have burial information for him or Ida who may have lived until 1947.
The 1910 census shows them living in Adams County with children Elsie, Henry and Ehlert. The 1920 census shows Henry Pagel married to Gladys living at Lemmon. The 1930 census shows Ehlert Pagel living at Wolf Butte. His wife was not in the household, but the 1920 census shows her name as Lydia Charkles abd Ida's other children were Alma and Edna.
Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Sorry I misspelled the last namein my last message, it should read; I sent photos to Louis Otos. I have a book called Prairie Pioneers that has a picture and a blurb about the Otos family in the early 1900's. If you don't have this and would like the article I could scan it and send it to you. Reply to my e mail address jswinkel@cox.net and we can bypass this message board.
Judy

I really don't have any connection to the triplets, other than I found original photos of them in a book on Perkins County, South Dakota that I had purchased from a used book shop in Oregon. I wanted to get the photos back to a family member and posted a query on this board. I mailed them to Louis Otis in Atlanta, Georgia. See his posting on this thread and you can e mail him for copies of the photos. I wish I had your posting first, because I would have mailed them to you, Oh well!! Glad to know they had offspring.
Judy
