EAST BEND - "Her children rise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her." Proverbs 31:28 Martha Jane Kirk Matthews passed away on Monday, March 19, 2007, at Forsyth Medical Center. Mrs. Matthews was born on Nov. 20, 1931, to the late Clarence V. and Mamie Stimpson Kirk. She was a 1950 graduate of East Bend High School. She owned and operated Mar-Kim Beauty Shop in East Bend and was later employed by Central Carolina Bank, where she retired. She was a lifelong member of East Bend United Methodist Church, where she was also a member of the United Methodist Women. She enjoyed making porcelain dolls, her doll collection and oil painting. She married Kenneth Gray Matthews on Dec. 17, 1950, and they enjoyed 56 years of marriage. She is survived by her husband, of the home and two sons, Mark Carroll (Julie) Matthews and Dr. Kim (Karen) Matthews, both of East Bend. Also surviving are six grandchildren, Michelle (Randall) Hinshaw, Erin (Bryan) Haynes, Kirk Matthews, Kyle Matthews and Allan Forester, all of East Bend, and Justin Matthews of Virginia Beach, Va.; three great-grandchildren, Briana Hinshaw, Madison and Taber Haynes; a special relative and friend, Joanne Matthews; three special cousins, Charles (Betty) Kirk of Oak Ridge, Tenn., Franklin (Jean) Kirk of Winston-Salem and Johnny Stimpson of Blacksburg, Va. Also surviving are her three beloved dogs, Pepper, Princess and Cracker. Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. today, March 22, at East Bend United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Richard Buffkin and the Rev. Janet Anderson officiating. The body will be placed in the church at 2:30 before the service. Burial will follow in East Bend Friends Church Cemetery.
