Mrs. Sarah Mae Martin Rhyne, 96, of Johnson Ridge Road, passed away Friday, October 8, 2004 at Hugh Chatham Nursing Center. She was born February 29, 1908 in Wilkes County to the late J.C. and Carrie Sparks Martin. Mrs. Rhyne was a homemaker and member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Glenn Rhyne; two sons-in-law, Bobby Joe Darnell, Al Groce; a daughter-in-law, Doris Rhyne; three grandchildren, Linda Rhyne, Larry Alexander, and Doug Wells.
Surviving are her children, Evelyn R. Groce, Winston-Salem, Frances (Leo) Collins, Lake Placid, Fla., Bill (Claudia) Rhyne, Elkin, Nancy (Otis) Williams, Ruby (Sam) Alexander all of Winston-Salem, Jim (Mary) Rhyne, Jonesville, Sarah "Trixie" Darnell, Elkin, Gayle (Jim) Wells, Ronda, Charles Rhyne, Conover, Kathy (Gary) Wagoner, Hamptonville, Elaine (Gary) Groce, Jacksonville, Fla; Sister Ruth Gambill, Elkin; two Brothers Ralph Martin, State Road, Gwyn (Pansy) Martin, Jonesville; 20 grandchildren, and 27 great-grandchildren.
Her funeral service was held at 11 a.m. Monday at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church by Dr. Gary Byrd. The body was placed in the church to lie instate 30 minutes prior to the service. Burial followed in the church cemetery. The family received friends from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday October 10, 2004 at Gentry Family Funeral Service on Little Mountain Road in Jonesville, and other times at the home of her daughter, Trixie Darnell, 389 Edwards Ridge Road in Elkin. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Pleasant Hill Baptist Church Food Fund, 593 Pleasant Hill Drive, Elkin, N.C. 28621; or to Camp Dogwood, P.O. Box 39, Sherrills Ford, N.C. 28673-0039. The family would like to give a special thanks to the staff Hugh Chatham Nursing Care Center in appreciation for their loving care.
