Hosea G. Blount, Civil War Soldier, CSA

In a cemetery near me in NY are the graves of several CSA soldiers who died in NYC as prisoners of war. They were from the 7th Regt. NC Inf. and were taken prisoner (to my belief) at the battles of Ft. Clarke and Ft. Hatteras, August 28, 1861. Among them is a Hosea G. Blount. I sent to the National Archives and the following info was learned:
He was a Pvt. in Capt. H.A. Gilliam's Company ("Morris Guards") of the 7th Regt. NC INf. Volunteers (later to become part of the 17th NC State Troops). He enlisted on May 3, 1861 at Plymouth, NC. - Another paper states same date but gives place of enlistment as Washington Co., NC. - He was 20 yrs old at time of enlistment. No parents names nor place of birth given. He died 9/29/1861 (probably from disease) at Fort Columbus (located on what is now known as Governors Island), New York City. He is buried in Cypress Hills National Cemetery, Brooklyn NY, Grave # 4444.
I have no family connection to this person and no further info, but am posting this message in case this info might be of some value to somebody.
Back in 1999, a Sean Swain posted a query here looking for informationi on Wilmer Bernice Swain, who is his grandfather. I'm helping a researcher who is another descendent of Romulus Swain of Washington County, and Romulus was Wilmer Swain's grandfather. If anyone has a contact for Sean (his e-mail that he used in 1999 is no longer valid), or if you have connections to Romulus and his line (his parents were Abijah Swain, also called "Bigg", and Sarah Steely), then let me know and I can put you in contact with Twyla.

Thanks,

Cathy

I am looking for any info on the Swain family in Wasington County, NC. My father was born in Roper? on Jan 17, 1948. His father was Wilmer Bernice Swain and his mother was the former Mildred Spruill. His grandfather was Joe Swain. My grandfather has a brother named Leon Swain who still lives in Washington County in the Roper area. My grandfather is deceased, having passed away in May of 1992. He is buried in Elizabeth City, NC in Westlawn Cemetery. I am trying to trace my families history and am having a difficult time. Any help will be appreciated

Ward Post was born in Saybrook, Middlesex County, Connecticut to Deacon David and Deborah (Ward) Post. In (or shortly after) 1800, Ward (and possibly his wife and daughter) went to Washington County, North Carolina, where he died in 1807. If his wife (Sarah Buckingham Post) and daughter were there with him, it is probable that they removed back to Connecticut after his death. There is no listing for them in the 1810 census in North Carolina, but there is a probable listing for them back in Saybrook.

I am looking for information about Ward in North Carolina: What he was doing there, how he died, if he is buried there, etc.

Any help would be gratefully appreciated.

From the July 15, 1898 issue of the Roanoke Beacon

Mr. C.W. Swain, one of Washington county’s most highly esteemed citizens, departed this life at his home, six miles from Plymouth at 11 o’clock on Monday last. Mr. Swain was in his 77th year and had been a great sufferer. He leaves a wife, several children and a large circle of relatives and friends to mourn his departure, to all of whom we extend deepest sympathy. The remains were interred in the family burying ground on Tuesday, Rev. D.W. Davis officiating.

Taneya
Roanoke Beacon Blog - http://roanokebeacon.wordpress.com/
My Genealogy Blog - http://taneyagenealogy.wordpress.com/

FAMILY CEMETERY FOUND!

The gravesite is believed to be the family cemetery
of Mabry (Mayberry) Stillman who owned the land and
farm back in 1916.
This family cemetery is located in Washington County,
just outside the city limits of Plymouth, NC and just
off U.S. 64 at the edge of a farm field and woods beside
the Wendys Restaurant that was constructed in late 2007.
THE GRAVE of EDNA HARDISON ELLS has been located in this
cemetery. Her grave marker is a small simple white stone
sticking up out of the underbrush about 12 inches. Edna
was born 12 June 1853 and died 02 Feb 1916.
Ednas' husband, Asa Ellis is also believed to be buried
there.
Because the cemetery is so overgrown with thick under-
growth and briars only one other grave has been located
and is the grave of Sophie Ann, wife of Mayberry Stillman.
There are no dates visable on her marker which is
almost completely covered up with undergrowth, briars, etc.
ASA ELLIS & EDNA 'HARDISON' ELLIS BURIAL LOCATIONS

I am trying to locate the graves sites where my Great Grandparents are buried. Their names are as follows:
ASA ELLIS, W/M, born Abt October 1853 (Plus or Minus 3yrs) in Martin County areas of Jamesville or Griffins. He was a son of WILLIAM ELLIS of Martin Co, N.C.
ASA ELLIS married EDNA HARDISON, W/F, born Abt November 1861 (Plus or Minus 3yrs) in Jamesville area of Martin Co., N.C.
ASA ELLIS died sometime between June 1900 and before the 1910 Washington County, NC Census was taken because EDNA 'HARDISON' ELLIS was listed as a widow in that 1910 census. I have been unable to find any ASA ELLIS of that age in any census record after 1900.
I believe that ASA ELLIS is possibly buried somewhere in Martin County, NC and I believe that EDNA HARDISON ELLIS is possibly buried somewhere in Washington County, NC. Any information would be greatly appreciated!
From the July 15, 1898 issue of the Roanoke Beacon.

Died - at his home near Mackey’s Ferry on Friday night last, Joseph W. Blount, Esq., aged 67 years. The deceased had been in ill health for several years, suffering from a complication of diseases, and his death was no surprise to his relatives and friends, though the death of such a prominent man naturally casts a gloom over the entire county.

He leaves one son, Mr. Wheeler Blount, who resided with him at his old home, and one daughter, Mrs. W S Davenport, of Mackey’s Ferry, and three brothers, one being Mayor Levi Blount, of this town; Mr. Edward Blount, who resided near him, and Mr. Alfred Blount, of Roper.

The deceased was a consistent member of the M.P. Church, an affectionate and devoted father, a loving brother and a kind and sympathetic friend.

The remains were laid to rest in the family grave yard at the old home on Saturday afternoon beside the dear ones who have long since preceded him to the world beyond where they waited to bid his spirit welcome.

The BEACON extends to the bereaved family and friends our heartfelt sympathies. Peace to his ashes.

Taneya
Roanoke Beacon Blog - http://roanokebeacon.wordpress.com/
My Genealogy Blog - http://taneyagenealogy.wordpress.com/

An bridge over the Scuppernong River (early 1940s)

Could someone tell me if there was an old bridge over the Scuppernong River in the late 1930s or early 1940s that, when the tide was up, would appear that you were driving through water? My parents and I were going somewhere - probably to Creswell to visit relatives there (Davenports, Berrys, Rews) - and although I was so very small, when I peered out of the car and saw no bridge, only water, I freaked out. I have often wondered when this bridge was replaced and would like to know its history. Florence Fulford Moore

Resolution of Respect for Alexander Woodson Ambrose

I found this tucked in an old family bible. The Resolution is in the "Zion's Landmark" pub at Wilson, NC , Primitive or Old School Baptist Vol LXXX May 1, 1947 No. 12 p 191. I hope it is of use to someone,
Juliane

Brother ALEXANDER WOODOSN AMBROSE was born October 6, 1865; died January 26, 1947. His stay on earth was 81 years, 3 months, and 20 days. He was twice married; his first wife preceeded him to the grave several years ago. He is also survived by his second wife and three daughters by his first wife: Mrs. ROSSIE OLIVER, Mrs. E. M. EDWARDS of Creswell, N.C. and Mrs. L. E. DAVENPORT of Norfolk, Va. Two half-sisters: Mrs. BETTY FURLOUGH of Creswell, N.C. and Mrs. HERBERT AMBROSE of Norfolk, Va. Three half brothers: Elder RICHARD , C. R. and HENRY AMBROSE, all of Creswell, N.C. and 13 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren, also several nieces and nephews.

Brother AMBROSE united with the Primitve Baptish Church at Concord, on Saturday before the fourth Sunday in September, 1937; and was baptized by Elder W. M. STUBBS. He was a faithful member until death. His funeral was conducted at the Concord Primitive Baptist Church, on Tuesday at two o'clock P. M., January 28, 1947, by his beloved pastor, Elder S. GRAY of Kinston, N. C., and was laid to rest in the family cemetery.

Be it Resolved, that we, the Church of Concord, in Washington County, bow in humble submission to the will of God.

That the Church has lost a faithful Brother, and we believe or loss is his eternal gain.

That a copy of these Resolutions be sent to Zion's Landmark, and to Old Faith Contender for pulbication, and spread on our Church records, and one to the family.

Don by order of conference, on Saturday before the fourth Sunday in Feb. 1947.

Elder S.
FOUR CLIFTON MEN FROM NC TO TX - 1849/50

Iam trying to make a connection between four NC men who came to TX about 1849/50. Some researchers think they could have been brothers or cousins and may have come from Washington County, NC. Their names were Josiah Redic "Red" CLIFTON born about 1818, Isaac Simon CLIFTON born about 1823, Thomas B. CLIFTON born about 1828 & Robert Earl CLIFTON born about 1830.. They were all listed in the 1850 TX census..Some say there may have been a fifty CLIFTON man who came aswell.
The four Clifton men resided in the area of Red River, Nacogdoches & Cherokee Counties in TX.

My ggrandfather was Robert Newman CLIFTOn, believed to be the son of Robert Earl CLIFTON.

Any help finding the parents & ancestors of these men would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your time,
Patricia Schiro
schiro@gte.net

The family consists of Joseph,45y; Priscilla G., 32y; Caroline F., 5y; Zola D., 3y; Lessie L., 2y; & Effie Stoly, 12y. The family, minus Joseph, is again listed in Plymouth in 1910. Priscilla "Cilla" is listed as a widow so Joseph must have died between 1910 & 1920. Any info on this family's, Joseph's death, or connections to the Williamson Co., TN McConnico's needed.

From the December 10, 1898 issue of the Roanoke Beacon:

At his home just South of this town on Friday night at 10 o'clock, Dr. H.E. WOLFE, SR. The announcement of his death, though a shock, was by no means a surprise to his family and friends, for he had been near unto death for several months.

The deceased was in the 76th year of his age. In early life he was a medical practitioner, but later confined himself to the practice of dentistry, and as such won a large practice and enviable reputation. He was twice married, first to Miss Susan A. ETHRIDGE, of Tyrrell county. To this union was given five children all of whom now live to mourn their loss; his first wife having died in 1879. He was again married in 1884 to Miss Sallie BEASLEY, of Bertie county, and this union was blessed by four children who also live to weep for the loss of a kind and affectionate father.

Dr. WOLFE joined the M.E. Church about 40 years ago, and having lived a devout christian life during all the changing scenes of those years, and his faith in God supported and comforted him until the end, when he was finally called to his eternal house beyond the skies.

The funeral services were held in the M.E. Church Sunday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock by the Rev. F.T. WOOTEN, of the Baptist Church of this town, and a more beautiful or impressive ceremony was never witnessed by our people, and the great concourse of people who filled the church to its utmost capacity, who came to pay the last tribute of respect to their departed friend, bore evidence of the universal esteem in which he was held.

To the bereaved family and friends we extend heartfelt sympathies. "The Lord givith and the Lord taketh away, blessed be the name of the Lord." A kind father, a loving husband, a patriotic and devoted citizen, and a Godly man has taken up his abode in the city of his God, Peace to his ashes.

Taneya - http://taneya-genealogy.blogspot.com/

I would like to hear from anyone who has information on Friley WHITE, an English sea captain who married Nancy (believed to be a Tuscarora Indian). They had a daughter, Annie E. WHITE, born 1859, who married William Stuart Ambrose of Washington County. I will be glad to share any information I have.
Christine Ambrose, Camden, NC.
HILTON, Horace & Elizabeth-1870 Bath, Beaufort Co, NC

Seeking contact with HILTON descendants, in particular the above family. My GG G/Mo, Frances H. [m-n-u] (b-July 1814), married David C. Martin (b~1805). They raised a family of 8 kids in the Bertie – Martin Co area. David died after the 1850 census, where family was recorded in Bertie Co. Youngest son, Robert, was b-Jan 1851. Widow Frances & 6 kids were recorded in Hamilton, Martin Co, NC 1860 census records. She died Sept 1865, & is buried in Hamilton Meth. Church cemetery, along with family members. Family "talk' suggests that her maiden name might have been HILTON. Her oldest son, James H. Martin (b-1832) initially found as ‘h-o-h’ in Bath Township in the 1860 census, was with new wife Mary Ann Draper (b-1837-Washington, Co), and infant dau, Elethia Carthine (b-1860). I recently found three of GG G/Mo Frances' younger kids, living with Horace & Elizabeth HILTON, in the 1870 Bath, Beaufort Co census records. This could be strong evidence that these kids were in the care of family members, in a nearby county, following Mother’s death in 1865. Any help in filling in the missing puzzle pieces would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Bob Edmondson Chatsworth, CA

From the Roanoke Beacon
http://roanokebeacon.blogspot.com/

Death of Prosper Armistead
December 6, 1889
Pg. 3

On Friday morning last, Nov 29th, after an illness of three days only, Prosper Armistead departed this life at his home near this town. The deceased was in his 59th year and has long been recognized from his association with so much of the old time history of Plymouth as one of its people for whom a deep, sincere and most friendly interest was cherished.

Prior to the war he was the body servant of Dr. Robert Armistead whom he faithfully and affectionately served until his death, receiving in return that kindly consideration which so often characterized the relationship of master and servant in the ante bellum days and which his honest devotion so justly merited. As the servant of him who writes this brief tribute to his memory he was equally faithful and sincere in every service, giving proof of his attachment especially in the critical period of the war by numberless deeds of sympathy and affection.

For years he has been the chief porter and caterer to the Latham House, of this city, where by his thorough honesty, polite and pleasant manners, and studied regard as well for the [...] eats of his house as the comfort of its patrons he won and held the unwavering friendship and esteem of all.

Burial services were read over his remains at the colored cemetery near Plymouth Sunday evening last, in the presence of a very large gathering of both white and colored who had come to pay this last tribute of respect to his memory, and the many expressions of deep regret for his loss attested well how firm a hold he had upon the white people of Plymouth, as well as his own color, for a life that had given evidence of some high and commendable qualities.

Peace to his ashes, and for him who has gone away from us as one of the humble and lowly ones of this earth, may a home be given in the better world by the Heavenly Father of us all, where He shall forever claim him as one of His children.

Willis, Charles and William Lonnie died in Wash., in the 1900s, too.
They lived in Plymouth and Lee's Mills areas. All had many children as far as I know. Sometimes their surname says "Robinson."

Hello,
I am a graduate student at Duke University researching the history of Somerset Place and its surrounding areas from Reconstruction to the presesnt.

A great deal of my research is based on oral histories, and to that end, I am hoping to be in touch with as many people as possible who have some kind of connection to or knowledge about Somerset, and life in Washington and Tyrrell Counties during the 20th century.

(I am interested in information from *ANY* point or points in the 20th century, and I am especially eager to locate people who have information about Farm Security Administration rural resettlement projects at Somerset in the 1930s.)

If you are interested in talking with me, or have questions about my project, I would love to hear from you. Please e-mail me at ayh@duke.edu or call me collect at 250-709-9640.

Thank you in advance for your time and consideration.

Best,
Alisa Harrison
Would love to find out more about Hester's father and mother. According to records Tom Davis married Ann T.Sawyer when Hester was 6 mos old, leaving me to believe that her mother was deceased, possiby at her birth. I do know that Ann Sawyer Davis had a relative named Willoughby Sawyer whom Hester had been promised to at a young age in 1876 but did not marry a that time. Thomas may have been the son of Joshua Davis and may have had a sibling named Zilpha. If any of this is familiar to anyone please contact me. Just a note...according to census records there were not many Davis' in Washington or Tyrell Counties at that time.

Myrtle's parents were Henry Cicero Spruill & Rennie Lucretia Mann. Delmer had a brother named Gilbert. It is said that Delmer or his father was a Sunday School teacher at the Mackey's Methodist Church in Washington Co. NC, & it's also said that he or his father worked for the Norfolk Southern Railroad as the Bridge Tender on the Albemarle Sound. Delmer's father was married to a Lamb. Can anyone here help me with this line of Simpsons? Also, they may have come from the Chowan Co. NC area. Any input would be appreciated! Thanks, RL Wright

Samuel J Williams, carpenter, and family lived in Hamilton in Martin Co. NC in the 1850s and 1860s and moved after 1870 to Washington Co. NC. Two of his daughters married in Washington County: Lucy Catherine m. 4 Nov 1875 John W. Allsbrooks (of Martin Co.) at the home of Samuel T (sic) Williams in Plymouth Township, and Maggie D. (Magdella?) m. 2 Nov 1876 Peter W Knight (of Halifax Co.) " at residence of bride's father in Lees Mill Township."

It is said Samuel J .Williams married Elizabeth Gillikin (of Williamston, Martin Co. NC) and their children from the Census seem to be Marina Caroline b.ca. 1844, Laura Ann b.ca. 1845, Mary Susan b.ca. 1846, James R. b.ca. 1848, Mary Della b.ca. 1851, Lucy Catherine b.ca. 1856 and Benjamin b.ca.1859.

What relation, if any, was Samuel J. Williams to the several Williams families in Washington County? Need facts or just clues. Thank you.

This man was an early Plymouth business leader, served as chairman of the Washington County Board of Education for 8 years. He was elected sheriff in 1900 and served until 1908. This information came from page 238 in "Washington County, NC a Tapestry". He is buried in Baptist Cemetery beside his wife. This cemetery is located on the corner of Third & Monroe. The cemetery is really in sad shape with broken tombstones, trash and other litter all around it. What I would like to know who owns this cemetery or who is responsible for it. It is a shame that such a leader as Mr. Jackson and other family members rest in such a mess.

Craddock and Henderson Dewey Craddock. Also, Martin had 2 daughters that I have traced Zilpha Craddock Phelps Alexander. Her husband and father to her children was Noah Alexander. Bethsheba Craddock married John Armistead Clifton. All of them are found in Washington county. Henderson married Nancy Alice Phelps in 1884. Henderson (H.D.) had a store in Cherry and an apartment on top of it. If anyone has "any" info. on anybody or the store, I am VERY Interested!! Thanks in advance.

Albemarle Davenport DNA Study

Over the past four years there has been an ongoing Davenport DNA study covering Davenports from all over the world. We have participants from New Zealand, Canada, England and of course the USA. As of today we have over 80 Davenports that have had their Y-DNA tested. The results so far have been very exciting for we Albemarle Davenports. The test results tell us that we are closely related to the New England Davenports -i.e. Rev John Davenport who came to Boston in 1637 and Thomas Davenport who came to Dorchester Mass. about the same time. In turn we can trace Rev. John's roots back to Cheshire, England. We know that our patriarch Richard Davenport came to North Carolina before 1670 and was born about 1642. We also know that he had three sons, Richard Jr, John and Isaac. In our DNA testing so far we have decendents from Isaac and John but none from Richard Jr. We also do not have test data from decendents of all of John's or Isaac's sons, thus our DNA study is incomplete. To help fillin the holes in our DNA study a group of Albemarle Davenports have setup a fund to help get more participants in our study. If you have a known direct line back to Richard Davenport (b.1642-d1714) from any of his sons and their sons and would like to add your DNA to the study please contact me and our group will help finance your test especially if you line has not been tested or you have a question in your line. Thanks for you help in this study, your cousin D. Harold Davenport - An Albemarle Davenport

According to the information that I have on my father's birth certificate (for Charles Olan ROBINSON, Jr.), Charles Olan ROBINSON was born about 1903, somewhere in North Carolina. He was living in Roane County, TN, at least by 1925, when he met and married my Grandmother, Bonnie Pauline DEVANEY.

I'm afraid that I do not know his exact date of birth or death, nor his parents' names, nor whether he had any siblings. However, Charles Olan is a rather unusual combination. Can anyone help me? Thanks.

Looking for information on Theaious Lamb, listed age 19 in household of Daniel Swain on 1880 Washington County census with ?mother Hester Lamb age 40 and ?sister Piny Lamb age 22. I believe his name is actually Thaddeus Lamb, and he is my ggrandfather and I have been unable to trace his lineage. He appears in the 1870 Tyrrell County census as Thadeous Lamb at age 10 in the household of Elizabeth Sutton, but his mother is not listed in that one, nor his sister. He married Hester Ann Hassell, and I believe they had at least three children: Arminta, Richard, and Milton. There is a family rumor that his surname was originally Hancock, but I can't substantiate it.

Maryville Times, (Blount Co. TN) Saturday, January 9, 1897:

“Last week a man, perhaps fifty years old, and resembling Rip Van Winkle, as described in the old story, reached the city. He was foot-sore and hungry, but was not begging. When met by a Sentinel reporter in South Knoxville he asked for directions how to get to Maryville. In response to several questions, he said his name was James Blount; that his home was near Carthage, in Smith County, this state, and that he was going to Washington County, North Carolina, to visit relatives. He said he had walked 250 miles this week and was going to walk the remainder of the distance. From Carthage to Washington County, which is on the eastern coast of North Carolina, is nearly one thousand miles, and as Blount is depending on the charity of the people along the road for food and lodging, he will have an abundance of time to see the country and get acquainted with the inhabitants.” Knoxville Tribune.

He was married 1. to Betsy Unknown who died before the 1850 census and 2. to Maria Davenport. This marriage was about mid 1840s. As best I can determine, Daniel and Betsy had a son, James W., born about 1814 but according to the 1840 census there were several more children but unfortunately names are not given in that census. I am interested in
1. the name of Daniel's father
2. any other names of the children of Daniel and Betsy.

Any information will be appreciated.

Joe was shot in 1920's of a mysterious nature according to word of mouth history but unable to trace anything. Joseph's parents were Kelly Arthur and Mary Godley. His wife was listed as Viola and unable to trace any living children but it was said he had several. Also listed for Joe was siblings : Duece,Laura and Mary.

Absalom Spruill Cemetery

Does anyone have any information on this cemetery? It is located in Creswell, Washington Co, NC. I understand that it has been done away with and is now located under a hog house. I have been to the following website http://www.rootsweb.com/~takelley/spruill/abspceme.htm
but it is hard to make a determination as to who is actually buried there as there is a bit of info about the parents of most of the people listed. Any help would be most appreciated.
Please email me at litaodell@yahoo.com

Pam O'Dell
John I have the document you are referring to plus a few more. Joshua was a lawyer according to my documents. The documents I have say he was living in Charleston South Carolina in 1821 but he came from Washington County North Carolina. His land was sold to Joshua B Davenport and Issac Bateman in Washington County on 17th of November 1851. After Joshua died the family must have moved to Macon county Alabama. I have probate papers from there giving guardianship of the younger children to Andrew and Zennida dated July 1851. This document is in bad shape but if you would like a copy let me know.
