Yes Merritt was his father dates are 1774-1835, his mother Elizabeth Andrews 1782-1840. He's my GG grandfather. The name he was born with was Amariah Biggs Mannning. I have started my tree on here last month. Merrit was the father of Merrit born 1811, Ammerier's brother. Best wishes, SN

This is my great great grandfather. A.B. was born 10 Sep 1810 (my birthday is 10 Sep)in Duplin County, N.C., d. 26 Jun 1895 in Autauga County, Ala. On 27 Jun 1850, he married Mary Catherine Elizabeth Scott, b. 11 Dec 1833 in Autauga County; d. 29 Jan 1904 in Autauga County.
I have found several places where it is said that A.B.'s father was Merit, b. 1739 in Bertie County, N.C. I have a problem with the age difference. Merit would have been 61 years old when A.B. was born.
Attached are pictures of A.B.'s and Elizabeth's tombstones. -Patricia Manning Nobles

Rhonda,
I am a direct descendent of Friley White and am seeking more information on him. There is a possibility that my mother, daughter of H.H. Ambrose, might be responsible for the story that Friley's wife was Tuscarora. Please visit my family tree, Mohn-Ambrose Family Tree, and see what I have discovered. Every tree that I see with Friley White in it has him married to Nancy Collins, but I have found no proof of that. In fact, two different census reports have Friley's wife as Nancy, but Nancy's age is 7 years different from the two reports. The same Nancy? Other family trees that have Friley White in them have birthdays for Nancy as listed from 1827, 1830, 1833, and 1837. I have found three different Nancy Collins names connected to those dates, and no proof that any of them belong to Friley. The Willoughby line, however, seems to be pretty accurate.

Edwards/ Sheppard slaves

Looking for some help. I am helping my husband's family search for the ancestors. The furthest I can go back in to John Edwards and his wife Mary(both African American). They had 6 children: Lilly, Rachel, Georgia, Mary, John and Joseph. Lilly, Rachel and Georgia as well as the parents John and Mary(Mollie) Edwards were all born in North Carolina and the remaining children were born in Portsmouth, Va after they moved. I am following up on a hunch and looking for some help. The daughter Rachel married a man named "Dee" Sheppard who is listed from Washington NC. We dont know where our Edwards relatives were from in North Carolina but I have found some white families in Washington NC who did own slaves. I looked for Edwards and Sheppard familes that owned slaves in the area and found there is documentation of a Theophilus Edwards who married an Elizabeth Sheppard as well as Mary Edwards who married a James Glasgow Sheppard. Also have Elizabeth A.C. Sheppard and Dempsey Edwards as well as a few others. So these families were definitely intertwined. There is always the possibility that some of the slaves were moved around to different plantations between the families as part of dowries etc which could explain our Rachel Edwards and Dee Sheppard finally meeting. Im wondering if anyone knows if there are any slaves records for these 2 families. If there are possibly any old family bibles that were donated to collections that can be searched to see if there is possibly a name of any slaves.

Since it doesnt look like they relocated until about 1900 they may have stayed on to help work the land so any records of people working for them would help. Its taken me 4 years to get to this point and I am looking for someone to steer me in the right direction so any help would be appreciated!

I have been trying to find out more about the family prior to him, and have just tumbled to the possibility that John D. was his father. I have traced Peter back to Gibson Tennessee, but have lost the trail befor there. Can you help me with migration across Tennessee and who were the adults involved.

It looks like it's been a couple of years since you created this post. Thought I would give it a shot in hopes that you may still be lingering around. Was wondering if you had any luck ...

As for myself, I am searching for my brother.

I was told that my brother was a "stillborn", 1969 is the year. I was told that his name was Scott Duval or (Duvall) Dawkins. Father's name: Herman J. Dawkins, Mother's name: Barbara H. Dawkins.

I have looked all over Ancestry, no luck yet.

I have contacted vital records of Jacksonville, FL, they were kind enough to look it up and tell me that there isn't a record of such person.

I then contacted Georgia, they want me to pay to find out whether there is a record or not so I have not pursued that as of yet.

Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated.

I'm wondering how to find the record OR if by some chance my brother is floating around some where.

Thanks for reading.

My ancestor David Pierce married and raised a family in Beaufort County. He was not from that area, telling his grand-daughter that his mother, a white woman had to give him away because his father was Indian. This sounds like a bastardy bond scenario. I located a mulatto David Pierce bonded to James and Eliza McKee, who owned a boarding house according to the 1850 and 1860 census. I would like to find out if anyone has information or can assist me in looking up information about this David Pierce and how he came to be bonded with the McKee family. I have been unable to locate any leads on my great-great grandfather's life prior to his first marriage.

I have Abner Lamb born about 1792. He enlisted in the army on March 7, 1814 in Plymouth, NC to fight in the War of 1812. There is a notation on his army record that seems to/may indicate that his birthdate was September 18, 1791. He is listed as 5 ft. 8 3/4 inches, with blue eyes, light hair, light complexion, is 23 years old, occupation listed as a shoemaker. I also have the 1850 census record that shows him married to Polly, with (presumably) his sister Nancy living with them, and (presumably) children, William and Nancy. I do not have a death record for Polly. He was married to Hester Ann Spruill on 2 May 1858. According to the 1860 census, he had a daughter, Thillipina born about 1859, with Thaddeus Bisque born about February 1860. In the 1870 census, he is not listed. I have Thaddeus Bisque's death date as 11 Jun 1928 in South Fork, Tyrrell County, according to his death certificate.
I have not been able to find more about Abner. I do not have any firm leads about who his parents were. I am hoping to review land records to see if I can find any further information, but as I live across the country, it might be a few years before I can do that. Good luck in your search!

I recently bought a book in Kitty Hawk titled the Life of Jackson. An inscription in the book was to Fred Murray Poyner from Uncle Ernest August 12 or 17th 1908. I found Fred in a Military Cemetary Locator. Fred Murray Poyner born 10/10/1893 died 11/9/1957 Corporal HQ Co. 318th NC Infantry, WWI. Hope this helps. I collect old books and oftern research any inscriptions to give me a feeling of the previous owners.

Hello, Im actually looking for some information on the Clagon Family as well. In the 1870 census there was a Phoeby Clagon (black)along with her daughter Macey Clagon and Edward Clagon who was listed under Smith Clagon's family. I believe she may have been a former slave for his family. I check his slave schedule for 1860 and I saw a woman who was close to the same age Pheoby would have been. Is there any documentation or will that names his slaves?

One Doctrine Davenport, the son of Celia Ann Spruill and James M. Davenport was married to a Sarah Jane. Census records and his death Certificate indicate that he was born April 8, 1858. He was living in Washington County with his family in 1900. He died in Edenton in 1937 and is buried in Beaver Hill Cemetery. My mother remembers him as living in Edenton. This Doctrine Davenport has numerous connections with the families you mentioned. Davenport in 1864 concerning some slaves that were being boarded by a Farley Ellis in Salisbury, NC. It is a very interesting letter because it details how much it was costing Ellis to board the slaves. The letter was written by a friend of Davenport. I was wondering if any of your papers would have information pertaining to Ellis or any friends of Davenport in the Salisbury area.

Looking for Fisher family connections in the Tyrrell, Washington and Currituck County area. There was a Daniel Fisher in Currituck in early 1800 censuses. The story is that my Daniel Fisher's family were seafaring people who had commercial ships in trade in the French and Spanish ports in the Caribbean. If anyone has suggestions on where to find more about ships and seamen in pre-Revolutionary NC, I would certainly appreciate them.

I don't know if there is any relationship with the Philadelphia Joshua Fisher and Sons firm. Those Fishers were Quakers who had ships of trade.

Julia Armstrong's father John Harden Armstrong was a ship's captain, and her mother, Mary Swain, came from another sailing family. The Armstrong family ancestors had owned property on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, and the Swains had settled Nantucket, Massachusetts.

There were Parramores in Tyrrell County, from the 1700s into the 1800s. There's even a cemetery, Paramour Cemetery, in the Riders Creek area of Tyrrell (on the same road as the Malachi Chapel Baptist Church). There are no marked graves with that name, though.
If you go to the Tyrrell County, NC GenWeb site, you can find some Parramore marriages, and a bit of other information, but there weren't a lot of people there with that name:
http://www.ncgenweb.us/tyrrell/TYRRELL.HTM

By the way, Washington County was formed in 1799 from Tyrrell County, so a few families with that name did end up in Washington County, (Joseph and Thomas Parrymour), but by 1850, there was no-one in the census with that last name.

An area that became Tenn was originally named Washington County, but that county was dissolved before 1799, which was when the present-day Washington County, NC was formed from Tyrrell County (more land was annexed in 1801 from Tyrrell to Washington). Washington County, NC is on the east coast, south of the Albemarle Sound. It's only relationship to the county that used to exist is that they have the same name.

This site has a brief historical background on Tenn:
http://www.tngenweb.org/pre1796/

One problem for you is that a lot of people from North Carolina migrated west and settled in Tenn - they came from all over - there were some who left Tyrrell County prior to 1799, and went there, then more left after 1800 (some from Tyrrell County, some from Washington County). Given the dates you mention, you might have better luck posting a query on the Tyrrell County forum instead of here, since your husband's ancestor was in Tenn before modern day Washington County was even formed. You might want to put a query in at every NC county that was in existence between 1775 and 1800, covering the birth year and the first year you know he was in Tenn. You can find a listing of the dates when counties were formed, and which other counties they might have been formed out of, here:

http://www.ncgenweb.us/county-list

Good luck.
I am at a loss for words. I have desperately been trying to locate my husbands 4 x Great Grandfather. He lived in Washington County, TN most of his life before dying in Cocke County and is buried there. I know that Washington Co. TN used to be Washington County North Carolina. He was born in North Carolina, and I suspect it was Washington County.I have him first appearing in Washington County Tennessee in 1800 as his oldest son was born there. His name was Abraham Tinker and he married a lady named Polly we do not know her last name. It was not Polly Hobday as some sources try to attribute it to being. She married Edward Tinker of Craven Co. NC, no relation between the two. Now, Abraham was born 1 Oct. 1775 in North Carolina. I do not really know where. Just goin on a hunch that it may have been Old Washington County, North Carolina. Any thoughts?

I do not have your Edward b. 1805 in my data base but you may want to start with the first Alexander to that area and work your way forward.

Anthony Alexander "humbly Sheweth that he hath right to 200 acres of Land by the Importacon of himselfe Ann his wife, Anthony his son & Jno Mason his servt, wch he is ready to prove & prays a Cert & shall pray. w. Glover Cl Cur." (from NC Historical & Genealogical Records)

"North Caroline Headrights - A List of Names, 1663 - 1744" pg. 30

p. 225 {CCR 102} Anthony Alexander proves his right to two hundred acres of land by the Importation of himself, An his Wife Anthony his son and Jno. Mason (General Court, 28 July 1698)

Anthony and Ann appear to have had 19 children. You can find his will and much more on the Alexanders at http://www.ncgenweb.us/tyrrell/TYRRELL.HTM

So far as I know Anthony Alexander was the progenitor of all the Alexanders in that area of NC.

Jean

Can you give a few more details? When was your Dad born? Was he the oldest or youngest of the siblings? Do you have any idea when the other brothers were born? Is this a white or African-American family?

Thanks.
