Peter ARNEY 1772-1845

Peter Arney
Born: 1772 (Tryon County, North Carolina)
Died: 1845 (Overton County, Tennessee)

Lincoln County, North Carolina, Court of Pleas & Quarters, October 1787.

Peter Arney, 15, "orphaned" son of Jacob Arney, deceased, is hereby "bound out" to John Fullenwider.Fulenwider, to learn the trade of a Miller, until the age of 21.

It's unclear, if Peter Arney, remained with John Fullenwider/Fulenwider, until the age of 21 (1793).

Supposedly after this, Peter Arney, left North Carolina, and settled in the area of Wythe County, Virginia. Whereby he married Margaret (surname/maiden name, unknown), and began their family (i.e. had children).
Supposedly, Margaret Arney (b: 1793), Adam Arney (b: 1797), Henry Arney (b: 1799), & John Arney (b: 1802), were all born in Virginia.

Around 1799, Peter Arney moved to the "Cumberland area" between Kentucky & Tennessee. It's quite possible that his Wife and young children, remained in Virginia, while Peter Arney built them a home.

[Note: This Peter ARNEY is not the Peter Arney, who married Catherine Fox.]

My objective, is to hopefully find the surname/maiden name, of Margaret who married Peter, probably around 1792/1793.

Also, to possibly find proof, of their children's births, in Virginia.

Thank you, for your time, consideration, and cooperation, I appreciate it.

In the area of Lincolnton-Boger City, there is an "Arney Street", which runs West to East, and is bound by "Hubbard Street" on the West, and "Lawing Street" on the East (according to Google Maps).

I hope not to muddy the waters, but often in those days, named streets led to a homeplace, farm or business. In hill and mountain country streets are not on grids, so roads were named for where they led. Arney Road probably led to the Arney home and perhaps no further. Have you found the end of Arney road?

Trying to locate the Arney Plantation in Lincoln County North Carolina

I have been trying to track down, the "Arney Plantation", in Lincoln County, North Carolina, to little avail, so far.

The few records, I have found, only show Jacob Arney, purchasing 200 acres on the South Fork of the Catawba River, in 1772.

While Christian "Christy" Arney, Sr. purchased several lots in Lincolnton, which leads me to believe that the "Arney Plantation" must have been near Lincolnton.

I still believe that both Jacob & Christian, Sr. were buried on the Arney Plantation.

Unfortunately, I don't know, in what direction the Arney Plantation was from Lincolnton.
If it was North or South, it could have been placed in a different County (Catawba/Gaston).
On the other hand, if it was East of Lincolnton, it could still have been in Lincoln County.

I do know, that there is an Arney street, that is East of Lincolnton, while still being in Lincolnton, called "Boger City". If the street was named after the Arney family, it's possible that the plantation was near there or could have been named after the lots that Christian, Sr. had purchased.

I "assume", that Christian, Sr. received the Arney Plantation, after his father's (Jacob) death.

I know that Christian, Sr., left his son, Christian, Jr., a choice of the Arney Plantation or lots in Lincolnton, from what I understand he took both.

I know that Christian, Jr., left his Widow & minor children, the plantation and lots in Lincolnton. After Christian, Jr.'s death, his Widow got to keep the plantation, but there was a lengthy, Court battle, in which his children's appointed guardian, was forced to make the children sell off several lots in Lincolnton, to pay their father's debts.

Matthew Wilson, son-in-law (husband of Julianna "Uly" Arney) of Christian, Sr. attempted to force Christian, Jr. to give him the Arney Plantation, due to debts owed, but failed.

Who received the Arney Plantation, after the death of Christian, Jr.'s Widow, I don't know?

Sebastian Arney Mystery in Wythe County Virginia

Hi,

I'm trying to learn more about Sebastian Arney (1775-1810), who lived in Wythe County, VA

Sebastian Arney (1775-1810)
Married Anna Maria Phillippi (1776-1854)

Children:

Christian Arney (1792-1850), married Mary (surname/maiden name, unknown)
Molly Magdalena Arney (1796-1887)
Henry Arney (1797-1887), married Elizabeth "Betsey" Phillippi
John Jacob Arney (1800-1868), married Sarah Sallie Salome Litz
Peter Arney (1801-1891), married Catherine Fox (1796-1880)
David Arney (1803-1878), married Floranzia Cowden (1814-1889)
Maria "Mary" Arney (1803-1897)
Christiana Anne Arney (1807-1885), married John Tims Boyd (1805-1876)
Sally "Salome" Arney (1808-1842), married David Miller

Now, it has been "said", that Sebastian Arney was the son of Christian "Christy" Arney, Sr. (1750-1834), who lived the majority of his life, in Lincoln County, North Carolina.
Yet, to date, I myself, haven't found any documentation proving this "theory".
In Christian "Christy" Arney, Sr.'s Will, there is no mention of a Sebastian, even though, he mentions all his other children, including other children that "passed away" before Christian "Christy" Arney, Sr. himself.

Any information, on this family (Sebastian Arney), would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you, for your time, consideration, and cooperation, I truly appreciate it.

Pinkney Admiral Arney (1838-1900)

In trying to learn more, about Christian "Christy" Arney, Sr.'s parents, I'm praying that the "key" lies with some descendants of Christian "Christy" Arney, Sr.

We know that Christian "Christy" Arney, Sr.'s, father was Jacob Arney, who left his Will dated in 1782, in Lincoln County, North Carolina.

We know the name of Jacob Arney's Wife, at the time of the writing of his Will, was Elizabeth.

Christian "Christy" Arney, Sr., would have received most (if not all) of his father's (Jacob's) land, after his father passed.

Christian "Christy" Arney, Sr., in turn, left his plantation and land to his son, Christian "Christy" Arney, Jr., but only if he wanted it (assuming that he kept the plantation, etc.).

The plantation would have been passed down to his (Christy, Jr.'s) Widow, and young children, only a few years later.

Christian "Christy" Arney, Sr., was the oldest son of Jacob Arney, and he is the best chance, to find out more information about his parents (Jacob & Elizabeth).

It's believed that Jacob Arney's 1st Wife, was Anna Ursula Kron, and they had 4 "known" children:
Christian "Christy" Arney, Sr. (1750-1834)
Adam "Lawrence" Arney (1751-1802)
Johann Heinrich "Henry" Arney (1755-1830)
Anna Elisabeth Arney-Setser/Setzer (1861-1849)

After the death of Anna Ursula Kron (Arney), it's believed that Jacob Arney, moved to the area of Tryon County, NC

2nd Wife, Elizabeth (surname/maiden name, unconfirmed).
They had 3 additional children:
Peter Arney (1772-1845)
Catherine Arney-Edleman (1774-????)
Tobias Arney (1775-????)

If you are a descendant of Christian "Christy" Arney, Sr., or you know of someone who is, please let me know.

[This Jacob Arney, was NOT the son of Frederick & Anna Maria Ernigh, who arrived in the USA, in 1732!!!]
I have been stuck at my gggrandfather, Benjamin F. Patterson for over 20 years. He was born about 1820 in SC and lived in the Gowdeysville/Draytonville area of Union County, SC along the Broad River. This area became part of Cherokee County in 1897. This was also in the same areas that Frederick Patterson lived since Cherokee County was made up of parts of Spartanburg, Union and York Counties.

Dean Patterson

Dean Patterson

Your message below incorporates some older work that has been found to be incorrect. Let me see if I can help you out:

Capt. Peter Thompson did marry on 31 Jan 1771 in Salisbury, Iredell NC Mary Potts who was the daughter of Henry Potts and Margaret Sheets, although her Sheets name is not proved at this point.

Peter Thompson's mother was Mary Sheldon, dau. of Richard Sheldon and Ann unknown. Mary Sheldon married Moses Thomson abt 1739 in Marple, Chester Co., PA. When Moses died 31 Jul 1745, she married second Andrew Simeral sometime before 1756.

Peter's son, James Peter Thompson 1784-1859 married Sara Prowell, both of Burke Co., NC. By 1809 they were in Williamson Co., TN where they raised their eleven children.

Please send me what information you have about James Simeral, we might be able to help each other.

What I know about George Simeral is that he was b. abt 1757 probably in Londondery Twp, Chester Co., PA. His father Andrew, was the second husband of Mary (Sheldon) Thomson, widow of Moses Thomson who d. 31 Jul 1745 in Marple, Chester Co.
George came with his father and stepmother to Davidsons Creek in Rowan Co., NC (Now Iredell) by 1762. Mary's son Peter Thomson had settled there previously. George Simeral lived with Peter in 1790 and succeeded Peter Thomson as Capt. of the Lower Creek Militia Co. in 1790's. They eventually moved to Burke Co., NC.
George probably married, but I have no spouse; he probably had a daughter Mary Simeral, who was named in Peter Thomson's will in 1821 as his neice. Possibly this George signed an agreement in Davidson Co., TN in 1806 regarding a military land warrant.
I have a few more references to George and Andrew Simeral, and would love to share what you know. I am trying to find out more about both of them hoping the information will help find more about Moses Thomson. And, if James Simeral is related, that may help, too.

Trying to locate ARNEY plantation circa 1780 to 1834

Hi,

My ARNEY ancestors, settled in the area of what was Tryon County, North Carolina, which after the dissolving of Tryon, became part of Lincoln County, North Carolina. Their ARNEY plantation was "probably" just outside Lincolnton, in Lincoln County, North Carolina.

In reading a book, on google books, I found this notation, about Lincolnton:

"Lincoln thus remained a large county until 1841, when the first slice was taken to form, with a portion of Rutherford County, the county of Cleveland.

In 1842, Catawba was set up from Lincoln by an east and west line passing one and a half miles north of Lincolnton.

In 1846, the southern part was set off into the county of Gaston, by a line to pass four and a half miles south of Lincolnton, and four miles of Catawba ceded back to Lincoln.

The formation of these new counties reduced Lincoln to a narrow strip, ten miles in width with an average length of thirty miles.

Lincoln County is bounded on the north by Catawba County; on the east by the Catawba River, which separates it from Iredell and Mecklenburg; on the south by Gaston; on the west by Cleveland; and one-fourth mile of Burke."

I'm trying to locate, where the "Arney plantation" was actually located, and I can see here, that it could lay, in one of several counties.

My ancestor, Jacob Arney, died in 1784, and his son, Christian Arney, Sr. would have "probably" inherited the Arney plantation. Christian Arney, Sr. died in the Spring of 1834, according to his son-in-law, Matthew Wilson.

Christian Arney, Sr. owned property, in Lincolnton, itself, that's why I'm making the "guess", that the Arney plantation, was near the town of Lincolnton, but where?

Depending on what direction, it would now be in a different county of North Carolina.

Does anyone know, if it's possible to find out where that plantation was located?
After all, both Jacob and Christian, were probably buried on the Arney plantation.

Thank you, for your time, consideration, and cooperation, I truly appreciate it.

My ARNEY family, moved to the area of Tryon County, North Carolina, around 1767. They lived in Tryon, until it was dissolved and became part of Lincoln County, North Carolina.

Jacob Arney, was the head of the family, when they made the move from Pennsylvania to North Carolina.

My ancestor, Peter Arney (Jacob's son) was born in 1772.

What I'm looking for, is any DTP (Definitive Tangible Proof) of this family in Tryon County, NC. I know, Tryon County, NC, didn't exist for very long, before being dissolved, and their location became Lincoln County, North Carolina.

I know that Jacob Arney, purchased 200 acres of land, in Tryon County, NC, around 1772, on the South Fork of the Catawba River.

Do any records, still exist, for Tryon County, North Carolina? Would there possibly be any record of my Peter Arney's birth/baptism, from back in 1772?

Thank you, for your time, consideration, and cooperation, I truly appreciate it.

David Stanley/Standley circa 1727

Researching David & Hannah Stanley/Standley who could be found in the records of Anson/Tryon/Mecklenburg Co, NC as early as 1758. David and his father John Stanley can be found as early as 1751 in Augusta Co VA.

I found a researcher who had John Stanley of Augusta Co VA with sons Jonathan, Sands, David and a daughter Marion who was married to Nathaniel Walker. I haven't been able to confirm this family.

David & Hannah's known children;

Catherine Standley who married Jacob McCarty, son of Daniel & Agnes McCarty of Lincoln Co NC. Jacob died in 1812 in Stewart Co., Tn. This is my husband's line.

David Standlee Jr who was married to Esther Tagert, daughter of John Tagert, first sheriff of Tryon Co NC. John Tagert's son James Tagert married Sarah McCarty, daughter of Jacob McCarty and Catherine Standley. David and Esther's son Abraham Standlee was married to Elizabeth Parchment, daughter of John Parchment.

John Standlee of Logan Co Ky. This includes the family of Oneciphorous Standlee, but there's reason to believe that David Sr may actually be his father, not John.

Abraham Standley. Was in Logan Co tax list in the 1790's. Was in Wilson Co Tn in 1802. We believe his son John David Standley married Matilda Harlan in Davidson Co Tn.

Joseph Standley. Unproven but he was listed in the 1787 tax list for the Cumberland Settlement (Davidson Co Tn) along with David & John.

These families traveled with the Hardins, Kuykendalls, Hamptons, Leepers and other families that lived along the Catawba River in North Carolina.

We have records from the Illinois Territorial papers to include a deposition from Abraham Standley that explains the family relationship between David Sr, David Jr, John Standley, Abraham Standley, and Jacob McCarty.

Would love to correspond with others researching these lines.

Sue
Engle vs Burns.... Michael son of Melchor Engle...

In Engle vs. Burns (VA; Case On Appeal; Judgement filed May 1805) It seems that Michael Engle was bequeathed land from his father "Milker Engle" (PER Melchor's Will dated 12 Jan 1760). This case file involves this land that Michael inherited and which he lived on at one point ... and then apparently sold. [His brother] Philip Engle was named as a Principal in this case. Michael Engle gave his sworn Statement regarding the particulars on 19 Apr 1790 in North Carolina.

I am researching the Michael Engle of Mecklenburg>Tryon>Lincoln CO, NC (county formation but same area).
Some list this Michael of Lincoln NC as the son of this Melchor Engle, & it would seem that per this VA case file.... that Michael who was the s/o Melchor did remove to NC.

Does anyone know more about the Michael who was the son of Melchor? Has anyone "pulled" these VA land records? Has anyone "pulled" this case file to determine where this Statement (Michael's) was actually filed.

All leads appreciated.

Thank you.

William McDonald, Elizabeth Sadler, William McCulloch, Thomas Neal - Smith Co, TN, Meck Co, NC

"William McDonald, Elizabeth Sadler, William McCulloch, Thomas Neal (Neel or Neale) and the connection between Smith County , Tenn; Mecklenburg County, NC and The New Acquisition Distict of South Carolina"

All, I would like to propose a theory regarding the ancestors that arrived in what became Smith County, Tenn in the late 1780's and early 1790's.

I believe Elizabeth Sadler's dad, John Sadler fought in the "New Acquisition Militia Regiment" along with Elizabeth's grandfather Captain William McCulloch. (this is based on South Carolina records form the American Rev)Captain William McCulloch marries the sister of Col Thomas Neel. Col Neel also serves in the "The New Acquisition Regiment Militia". The "New Acquisition District" was a section of North Carolina that was given to South Carolina as a part of dividing the original colony into North and South Carolina. This District would eventually become York County, SC. and was originally part of Mecklenburg County/Tryon County.

Why is this important? I think that Randolph, Magness, and William McDonald moved to North Carolina from Virginia. A lot of families in the Up-state of South Carolina made that move from Pennsylvania and Virginia during the colonial period prior to the American Rev.

Here are the clues I have.

1) William McDonald and Elizabeth Sadler were married in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. John Sadler and his wife Jennett McCulloch Sadler move to Tennessee with William McDonald and Elizabeth Sadler McDonald around 1789-90.
2) John Sadler is Identified in his Elizabeth Neel McCulloch's will as her son-in-law.
3) A "John Sadler" is recorded as joining the "New Acquisition Militia Regiment" in 1775. They have to be the same John Sadler and this also squares with Sadler tradition.
4) A Magness McDonald fought in the North Carolina Militia at Kings Mountain where the New Acquisition Regiment also fought. This Magness is not a part of the McDonald Line that descends from Lt. Bryan McDonnell (later McDonald) of Lienster, Ireland that purchased property in Delaware and whose descendants later migrate through Delaware, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Tennessee. It is my proposal that this Magness McDonald is brother to William McDonald and son of Randolph McDonald which is consistant with the McDonald/Sadler oral tradition where Randolph and his sons -Elias, Magness and William migrate from Scotland to Edinburough, Shennandoa County, Virginia.

It just appears that there are some possible connections here. What do you think? Hopefully this may shed light on how this branch of McDonalds migrated form Virginia to Tenn.

Please respond with thoughts, observations or documentation.

Sincerely,

Chad D McDonald

George/Giles Reynolds - Loyalist

Looking for information on George Reynolds, a loyalist in the Revolutionary War. He is listed several times in pay records for the North Carolina Militia, along with Thomas Reynolds (perhaps a brother). Believe that he may also have gone by Giles and had his land confiscated.

He may have had a wife Anne and 3 children: Stephen, Mary and Ann. They were evacuated from St. Augustine, FL in 1784 on the "Argo" bound for Nova Scotia.

I appreciate any help.

Thanks,
Bruce

Do you have any information as to who Fredericks father was?
My gg-grandfather was Benjamin F. Patterson born about 1820 in SC. I believe that Frederick may have been an older brother to my Benjamin with Abner Patterson (b. abt. 1770 in NC) being their father. This is unproven at this time but with the proximity of their households, number of children in the various census records, and the names given to the children, I feel it is a strong possibility. Looking forward to any additional info you may have.
Dean Patterson
deanpatterson@comporium.net

Also, a Thomas or John Guffey married Benjamin's sister, Rhue Marshall, around the same time. Are these Guffeys connected to your Guffeys? I am descended through these Marshalls.
McCarty/Blairs in NC 1700-1850

I am a direct descendant of Ann Blair, daughter of Hugh Blair Jr. and Mary (Polly) Lee aand granddaughter of Hugh Blair Sr and Jemimah McCarty.

Jemimah was the daughter of Daniel McCarty of Lincoln County (formally Tryon) and Granville Counties, NC. He had a brother Cornelius who owned land near Daniel in NC, SC. Daniel married Agness (???). Among their children was my 5th great grandmother Jemimah. Their family owned property in Granville County and Lincoln County(formerly Tryon) In NC. Land was sold between Daniel and a Johnston whose son Samuel eventually married Daniel’s daughter Olley (Olive)

Evidently Daniel’s brother Cornelius left for South Carolina before Daniel did because he transferred some land to Daniel and Hugh Blair. Blair married Daniel’s daughter Jemimah and moved to SC and eventually GA with Daniel . His sons Daniel Jr. John & Jacob moved also as did most of his daughters.

There was a Cornelius recorded in Lincoln County NC as head of a household of 3 males of 16 years or older, 1 male under 16 and 3 females. Since we know Daniel and his older brother Cornelius was in SC or GA by that time. I wonder if this might be the father of the two brothers. I do not know anything about his wife and children. I believe the Cornelius from Mecklenburg (formerly Tryon) County NC who married Jemima Bell and move eventually to KY and Ohio are members of the McCarthy family from Stafford County VA. I do not believe that he was because his marriage date was in the 1820’s. and he went west while my McCarty’s migrated southwards.
I believe Cornelius, the eldest son of Daniel who was the heir in law of Cornelius’ of SC estate and married in GA. I still haven’t worked that out yet.

One fact I have discovered is that there were two families (one was named Goforth)involved with the McCarty’s in Tryon and/or Granville County who can be connected in Bucks County PA with a Cornelius McCarty. I’m not sure about this but perhaps it is worth investigating.

I am hopeful that someone may have some data that might open a few doors to my McCarty/Blair Family.

Thanks.

Phil Strause
