In the future, I believe it would be a good idea to just ignore any posts that call for eliminating obit postings from this web site.

These negative posts serve no purpose as the majority of members rely on the obits for updating their family history information and support the efforts of those who have taken on this task.

Let's not clutter up the board any futher by replying to them.

Tyson is the beautiful son of Dustin Bracky and Britni Journey Rogers.

George M. Holmes

HAMPTONVILLE - Mr. George M. Holmes, 80, died Thursday, December 31, 2009 at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston Salem.

He was born June 20, 1929 in Mt. Airy, NC to the late John William Holmes and Thelma Elizabeth Dobie.

George Holmes was educated in the public schools of Mt. Airy and Washington, D.C. He graduated from Appalachian State University, where he played football under Coach Duggins. Later George coached at West Yadkin High School; became President and Co-owner of W.N. Ireland Insurance Agency; and was a North Carolina State Representative for 32 years. While serving as a State Representative, he was a staunch advocate for Appalachian State University, and was "the catalyst" in securing funding for the convocation center which bears his name. He always championed educational and technological causes. George was extremely proud to represent Yadkin County as part of his district.

George is survived by his beloved wife, Barbara Ireland Holmes; a daughter, Jennifer Holmes Crawley and husband, Sid Crawley of Kansas City, KS; three granddaughters, Amanda Crawley of Kansas City, KS; Jennifer Crawley, Megan Crawley, both of Ann Arbor, MI; a sister, Ronella Holmes Goad, and the late D.C. Goad, of Mt. Airy, NC; and three brothers, William Holmes, and wife, Helen of Cape Coral, FL, Jim Holmes and wife, Sue, of Pleasantville, New York, Dobie Holmes, and wife, Mary Francis of Silver Spring, MD.

His Funeral Service and Celebration of Life will be 3 p.m. Sunday, January 3, 2010 at Flat Rock Baptist Church in Hamptonville with Dr. Charles J. Tomlin, officiating. Mr. Holmes will lie in-state 30 minutes prior to the Service. Burial will follow in the Church cemetery. MOUNT AIRY— Mrs. Vickie Lynn Durham Hodges, 52, of 2730 Haystack Road, Mount Airy, passed away Thursday afternoon, December 31, 2009.

Mrs. Hodges was born December 18, 1957, in Alamance County, the daughter of the late James Daniel and Mattie White Durham.

Vickie was a professional land surveyor for several years, serving North Carolina and Virginia, and a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church.

She is survived by a daughter, Sarah Hodges of Mount Airy; a stepdaughter and her husband, Audrey and Tim Simpson of Mount Airy; a sister and brother-in-law, Lisa and Mark Anderson of Mount Airy; and two brothers and a sister-in-law, Danny and Tina Durham of North Augusta, SC, and Larry James Durham of Winston-Salem.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Hodges was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Dale “Dicky” Hodges.

Charles Sidney Woods

MOUNT AIRY — Mr. Charles “Goose” Sidney Woods, age 57, of Mt. Airy a loving Husband, Father, and Grandfather passed away on Wednesday evening at the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson.

He was born in Forsyth County on June 3, 1952 to the late William Riley and Elsie Chandler Woods.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a brother Donald Woods and a mother-in-law Ida-Mae Moretz Cummings.

He was a Truck Driver for Estes Express Lines and attended Welcome View Baptist Church.

Surviving is his wife of thirty five years Debbie Cummings Woods, of the home; daughters and sons-in-law Tina and Michael Craddock of Dobson, Glenda and Ronnie Sumner of Cana, Va ; a son and fiancée Glenn Woods and Stephanie Welch of Mt. PILOT MOUNTAIN - Mrs. Lottie Lee Bennett Simmons, age 93 of Pilot Mountain, died Tuesday, December 29, 2009 at her home.

Mrs. Simmons was retired cafeteria manager at Pilot Mountain Elementary School and a member of Sulfur Springs Baptist Church.

Robert Graham Williams

STOKESDALE — Mr. Robert Graham Williams, 84, died Monday, December 28, 2009 at Beacon Place.

Graham's funeral will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, December 31, at Stokesdale Christian Church with Rev. Tom Bierovic and Rev. Rick LeBaube officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery beside his wife, Viola, who passed away on January 1st of this year.

A Surry County native, Graham was born on January 24, 1925, the son of the late Robert Cornelius and Dora Stephens Williams.

He was a member of Stokesdale Christian Church, where he served as a Deacon, and was active in the Men's Fellowship group. He was retired from Foremost Screen Printing, and served proudly in the US Army. As a veteran, he was active in the China-Burma-India reunion groups. Community service for Graham was building handicap ramps and delivering Meals-on-Wheels. In his spare time, he enjoyed woodworking.

Surviving are his children Larry Graham Williams and his wife, Cindy, Henry Williams and his wife, Wendy, Roger Williams, and Bonnie Williams and her husband, Woody, all of Stokesdale, a sister Louise Hooker of Summerfield, six grandchildren Sherry Lamb, David Williams, Lee Williams, Nicole Skelding, Ashley Ayers, and Autumn Williams, as well as eight great grandchildren Joshua Lamb, Grayson Lamb, Logan Williams, Gavin Williams, Taylor Williams, Tyler Williams, Kameron Bullard and Mason Skelding.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by brothers Glen Williams and Theron Williams, and a sister Beatrice Lester.

The family will receive friends tonight, Wednesday, from 6 until 8 p.m. at Forbis & Dick Brooke Chapel, and other times at the family home.

Mrs. Patton was born November 19, 1939, in Surry County, to Thelma June Marion Atkins and the late James Ellis Atkins.

She retired from Kentucky Derby Hosiery.

Elkin- Mr. Charles Wilmoth, 73, of Crafton, Texas and formerly of Elkin, died peacefully, after a long battle with multiple illnesses’, at his home.

He was born November 24, 1936 in Surry County to the late Robert and Josephine Wilmoth.

He worked as a truck driver for several years, and was a veteran of the US Army. He was a 10 year member of the Crafton Texas Volunteer Fire Department, long time member of the Lions Club, and was a lifetime member of the Eye and Organ Bank in Texas.

Surviving are his beloved wife of 54 years, Carrie Wagoner Wilmoth, of the home; 2 sons, Charles L. Wilmoth, Crafton, Tx; Robert E. Wilmoth, Alvarado, TX; 5 grandchildren; a sister, Dianna Boutte, Middlothean, TX; a brother, Claude T. Wilmoth, Delaware City, Delaware; 2 uncles and 2 aunts, Paul Luffman, Nathaniel and Edna Luffman, Virginia Luffman; and a very special Friend, Bill Lyons.

The family will receive friends from 12:00 to 2:00 PM Thursday at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church in Elkin. Ms. Pamela Gale Tucker King, 49, of Elkin, formerly of Laurel Mississippi, passed away on Sunday December 27, 2009 at the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home.

She was born in Jones County, Mississippi on December 16, 1960 to Mrs. Lynda Faye Sullivan Tucker and the late George Edgar Tucker, Sr.

Ms. King was employeed by Meridian One-Hour Cleaners and was of the Baptist Faith.

She is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Tabitha and Ryan Monroe of Elkin, Samantha King and Brandy and Mark Heidelberg all of Laurel, Mississippi; ten grandchildren; a sister, Lisa Tucker of Laurel, Mississippi and a brother, George Edgar Tucker, Jr. also of Laurel Mississippi.

Lola Bell Love Bates

WASHINGTON, D.C. - A beautiful, compassionate, Christian, and matriarch of the Love and Smith Family ended this life on Friday, December 18, 2009.

Mrs. Lola Bell Love Bates, the fourth of ten children was born to James Samie Love and Mary Smith Love, April 8, 1915 in Westfield, NC and was reclaimed by God on December 18, 2009 in Durham, NC. She attended public school in Westfield and at an early age became a member of Chestnut Ridge Primitive Baptist Church. She moved to Winston-Salem, NC in 1934 and became a member of Goler Memorial AME Zion Church. She taught Sunday school and was a member of the Ladies Usher Board, Vice President of the Chorus Choir, a member of the Missionary Society, and the Stewardess Board. She was there when the church was destroyed by fire and for the rebuilding. She married James T. Bates on February 4, 1944. In 1952 they relocated to Washington, DC and became members of John Wesley AME Zion Church under the leadership of Dr. E. Franklin Jackson. In 1952, she was given the task of caring for Altar flowers and later helped to organize the flower club named after Dr. E. Franklin Jackson. She served as President for over forty years. She served as president of the Deaconess Board No. 1 and the April Birthday Club. She was named Woman of the Year at John Wesley AME Zion Church in 2001 and was active in many other clubs and organizations. She was Grand Matron of the Order of Eastern Star for over 30 years and was Grand Matron Emeritus at the time of death, a member of the National Council of Negro Women, National Temple and Charity Board, National Deputy for Daughters of ISIS and Second Lt. National Grand Court of ISIS. She was inducted into the Livingstone College Hall of Fame.

Mrs. Bates was preceded in death by her parents, James and Mary Smith Love; her husband for over fifty years, James T. Bates; five sisters, Lillie (Howard) Watkins, Martha L. (Joseph) Penn, Annie Love, Collie Love, and Nora Love; one sister who died at birth; and two brothers, William (Simmie) Love and Andrew (Mary Sue) Love.

She is survived by one sister, Allie Love of Winston-Salem, NC: two god-children, Vicky Herman of Winston-Salem, NC and Clifford Brown of Freehold, NJ; a devoted niece and nephew, Evelyn Penn of Winston-Salem, NC and Roland Penn of Adelphi, MD; a special friend, Emma Alexander of Silver Springs, MD; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Funeral Services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, December 29, 2009 at Goler Memorial AME Zion Church with the Reverend Dr. Seth O. Lartey officiating and the Reverend Vernon A. Shannon of John Wesley AME Zion Church Washington, DC, eulogist. Interment will follow in Crestview Memorial Park, Rural Hall, NC. MOUNT AIRY — Mr. Jeffrey Maxwell Thomas, 50 of Holly Ave., Mount Airy, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 29, 2009, at Northern Hospital of Surry County.

He was born Sept. 3, 1959, in Cleveland, Ohio, to the late Marvin and Pauline Breedlove Thomas.

He was employed by Ottenweller and was a member of the Mount Airy First Pentecostal Holiness Church.

Surviving are a daughter, Holly Thomas of Mount Airy; a son, Jeffery Travis Thomas of Mount Airy; a sister, Connie Wallace of Mount Airy; three brothers and two sisters-in-law, Ronnie and Sandra Thomas of Mount Airy, Jim and Judy Thomas of Mount Airy and Bryan Thomas of Mount Airy.

John Thomas Inman

MOUNT AIRY — Mr. John Thomas “Tom” Inman, 90, of Mount Airy, passed away Sunday, December 27, 2009, at Northern Hospital of Surry County.

Mr. Inman was born October 30, 1919, in Surry County, to Sam C. and Daisy Cooke Inman.

He served our country in the United States Army during World War II in North Africa and Italy. Mr. Inman retired after 35 years at North Carolina Granite and a total of 64 years as a truck driver. He was the oldest male active member of Holly Springs Baptist Church, where he had also been a deacon. Mr. Inman was a charter member as well as the oldest living active member of the Holly Springs Ruritan Club. Mr. and Mrs. Inman celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary on December 21st.

Surviving are his loving wife, Thelma Riddle Inman of the home; a daughter, Wanda East of the home; and a sister, Gertie Bell Cummings of Thomasville.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Inman was preceded in death by a sister, Myrtle Richardson; and four brothers, James Inman, Ausie Inman, Earlie Inman, and Lindy Inman.

The funeral service will be held Tuesday, December 29, 2009, at 2:00 PM at Holly Springs Baptist Church, with the Rev. Wayburn Mosley, the Rev. Lanny Atkins, and the Rev. Jimmy Cain officiating. Mr. Inman will lie-in-state at the church for 30 minutes prior to the service. Burial will follow in the church cemetery, with military honors by VFW Memorial Honor Guard. Mrs. Morgan was born February 5, 1924 in Surry County to McKinley Jones and Effie Shropshire Jones.

She had been employed at several furniture manufacturing companies over the years. After retirement, Mrs. Morgan enjoyed oil painting, crafts, sewing and gardening. She had several dogs that she loved very much.

Mrs. Morgan was married to John L. Morgan for 56 years who survives of the residence. Also surviving are two sons, John M. Morgan and wife, Tammy of Archdale and Allen Dale Morgan and wife, Mindy of Raleigh, a daughter, Gloria Jean Folden and husband, Fred of Florida and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

The Funeral will be at 2:00 P.M. Monday in the Chapel of Cumby Family Funeral Service in Archdale by Reverend Bobby L. Loving. The interment will follow at Guilford Memorial Park Cemetery. Mr. Comas Gray Groce, age 82 of mining School Rd. passed away Thursday December 24, 2009 at his residence.

He was born Feb. 25, 1927 in Yadkin County, to Sam and Nellie Wagoner Groce.

Mr. Groce was retired from Chatham Mfg. and was a member of Pleasant View Baptist Church, where he had served as a Sunday School teacher for several years.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Ernest Groce.

Survivors include: his wife Lucile Cheek Groce of the home; four sons, Chris Groce and wife Anita of Roaring River, Sammy Groce and wife Sandra of Sparta, Tenn., Seth Groce of St. Road, and Jimmy Groce and wife Brenda also of St. Road. Twelve Grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and two special friends Jamie Groce, and Rose Ann Groce.

Mr. Bennett was born on September 10, 1922 to the late Doc Isom and Mary Paige Bennett.

He was retired from Armtex Inc. and was a member of Friendly Chapel, where he served as a Deacon and Usher.

Surviving to cherish his memory are his wife of sixty-five years, Almeta Bennett; his sons, Charles Ravon Bennett, Gene (Barbara) Bennett; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces.

Mr. Bennett was preceded in death by his sister, Ruby Reeder; two brothers, Hubert and Kenny Bennett; and one granddaughter, Renee Elkins.

She was born on December 16, 1929 in Surry County to the late Willie Vestal Martin and Maggie Susan Harrison Martin.

She enjoyed bowling, reading, game shows and was a big sports fanatic of Duke Basketball. She worked most of her life as a cosmetologist and attended Matthews Chapel Church of Christ in Winston-Salem.

In addition to her parents and husbands, she was preceded in death by a son, David Lee Stanley Sr.

Mrs. Brewer is survived by two sons, Phillip Stanley and wife, Vicky of Summerville and Randy L. Stanley of Winston-Salem; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one sister, Lola Childress of Mt. Airy.

A Graveside Service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, December 22, 2009 at Gardens of Memory in Walkertown. Since you are new to research, then you don't know that there are at least two/three better ways to handle obits and leave the forum boards open to discussion, etc.

Obits are often posted at the county library web sites or at the county genweb sites or at the newspaper on-line sites. It makes most sense to post at those places and leave the FORUM boards open for discussion and research.

From that obit, I found a lot of information about my family. I guess they could be elsewhere, but I think they are good here and am glad that they are here.

Hopefully I will be able to post this because ancestry.com has been having difficulty with the message board feature and I have not been able to post. If the problem is solved then I will post other queries on the message boards. When I contacted ancestry.com about my problem posting I found out that it is (hopefully was) a widespread problem and may have affected others ability to post which could be a deterrent.

Most researchers have stopped using this forum board because of the obits and that is why they should be removed and this board returned to research and connections.

I too felt that way in the begining. Now I realize this is an invaluable resourse in the future. I simply skim past the name and word obits that don't apply to my search as I do for the other posts that don't apply to my search. Then I click on whatever is of interest to me. I can get through the notification in about 30 seconds most days. I also check out genforum and RootsWeb bords. Ya never know when a small clue breaks the brick wall.

As for searching, I have always gotten way too many results. Is there a way to narrow the search so every "James" in the data bank doesn't show up when I am looking for "James Jennings Surry Co NC 1770-1820"?

She was a retired school teacher, having taught 30 years with most of that time at Mount Airy Junior High School. Mrs. Taylor had been an active member of First Presbyterian Church prior to her illness. She was a charter member of the Surry County Historical Society and a charter builder of The Mount Airy Museum of Regional History and was a former volunteer there. She was a past member of the Mount Airy Altrusa International Club.

Mrs. Taylor was preceded in death by her husband, Wesley Stephen “Steve” Taylor in 2008; and an infant son, Nathan Anderson Taylor in 1960.

She is survived by her sons, Stephen Christopher Taylor and Stuart Austin Taylor, both of Winston-Salem; a grandson, Christopher Adam Taylor of Winston-Salem; two sisters, Mary Lynn Dorton of Jacksonville, FL, and Ann K. MOUNT AIRY — Mr. Loyd Hugh “L.H.” Hawks Jr., 79, of 1931 Pipers Gap Road, Mount Airy, passed away Friday, Dec. 18, 2009, at the Northern Hospital of Surry County.

Mr. Hawks was born April 9, 1930, in Yeager, W.Va., to the late Loyd Hugh Hawks Sr. and Grace Leftwich Hawks.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, serving in the Korean Conflict, was retired from A.W. Trucking as a dispatcher and was a member of Lambsburg Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Helen Grey Hawks of the home; one daughter and son-in-law, Cathy and Bill Hull of Mount Airy; two sons, Leonard Wade Hawks of Mount Airy and Loyd Hugh Hawks III of Charlotte; two grandsons and spouse, Will and Brea Hull and Adam Hull, all of Mount Airy; one great-grandson, Carter Hull of Mount Airy; two sisters, Opal Stewart of Clemmons and Lois Ann King of Mount Airy; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Charles and Kathleen Hawks and Darrell and Carol Hawks, all of Lambsburg, and Christine Hawks of Mount Airy; and a brother-in-law, Eddie Gray of Roanoke, Va.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Hawks was preceded in death by a sister, Barbara Gray; a brother, Carroll Hawks; and two brothers-in-law, Roland Stewart and Newton King.

Funeral services will be held Monday, Dec. 21, 2009, at 11 a.m. at the Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy with services conducted by the Rev. Verlon Combs with burial to follow in the Flower Gap Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday from 9 a.m. until time for the service. Morristown, TN - Mr. Thomas Miles Gentry, age 90, passed away Thursday, December 17, 2009 at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital in Elkin, NC.

Mr. Gentry was born October 30, 1919 in Surry County, NC to Joseph Burdett & Stella Newman Gentry.

Mr. Gentry was a veteran of the US Marines and served during WWII. He was retired from Roadway Transportation.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Doris Fowler Gentry and a brother, Joe Gentry.

Survivors include: three daughters, Mrs. Libby Price and husband Robert of Elkin, NC Sandra Jacobs and husband Roger of Myrtle Beach, SC, Linda Rapp and husband Philip of Lexington, NC; a stepdaughter, Pam Boyd of Morristown, TN; a brother, J.B. Gentry of Georgetown, TX; two sisters, Mary Money of Elkin, NC, Betty Holbrook of Winston-Salem, NC; Nine grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, December 20, 2009 at 4:00 p.m. at Elkin Funeral Service Chapel. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 2:30-4:00 p.m. at Elkin Funeral Service in Elkin, NC. A graveside service will be held Monday, December 21, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. at Bethesda Cemetery in Morristown, TN.

DOBSON - Mrs. Lois Martha Johnson Snow, wife of Fred R. Snow, age 83, of Dobson passed away on Thursday morning December 17, 2009 at Northern Hospital of Surry Co.

Mama was a gifted seamstress and loved piecing fabric scraps together into works of art she showcased as quilts. She loved nothing more than to be outside digging in the dirt, planting her flowers or garden and sharing the harvest with friends and neighbors. She was a selfless mother and homemaker who will be dearly missed by all.

She was born in Surry County on August 14, 1926 to the late Joseph Early and Viola Payne Johnson.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her daughter Sheila Kay Snow Norman; one sister Vergie Johnson Cave; five brothers Carville, Carl, Marvin, Thomas, and Calvin Johnson.

Surviving in addition to her husband; daughters, Betty and Joe Riddle of Ararat, NC, Aimee Snow of Dobson, Greta and Todd Gardner of Dobson; sons, Freddy and Kathy Snow of Dobson, Benny and Diane Snow of Dobson; grandchildren and (great-grandchildren), Payge Williams (Sophia, Eli and Sadie), Monica and David Hardy (Colin), Deitra Snow, Kevin and Lisa Snow (Rhiannon), Nathan and Kristin Snow (Regan), Christa and Nigel Campbell (A.J.), Laura Riddle, Jonathan Norman, Abbie Wagoner (Payton), Emily Wagoner, Kirstin Gardner, Karmen Gardner; one sister, Helen Bowers of Elkin; one brother, Curtis and Betty Johnson of Middle River, Maryland; and sister-in-law, Loree W. Johnson of Dobson.

A Memorial service will be held 2:00 PM Sunday December 20, 2009 at Fairview Baptist Church. Rev. Andy Atkins will officiate the service.
The family will receive friends at Moody-Davis Funeral Home in Dobson on Saturday evening from 6 until 8 PM if weather permitting. In the event of bad weather, the family will receive friends on Sunday after the Memorial Service in the church fellowship hall. TOBACCOVILLE - Mrs. Stella Smith Montgomery, age 81, of Tobaccoville passed away at her home late Thursday evening, December 17, 2009.

Mrs. Montgomery was born in Surry County on December 20, 1927 to the late Claude and Ella Hicks Smith.

Stella was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and sister.

Mrs. Montgomery is survived by her loving husband of 61 years, Hassell A Montgomery of the home; one son Claude Daniel Montgomery of Tobaccoville; four daughters and sons-in-law, Fonda Gail (Pete) Cecile of Wilkesboro, Kathy (W.C.) Flinchum of Walnut Cove, Jan Montgomery-Culler of Tobaccoville, and Laura (Jimmy) Whitman of Pfafftown; 11 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, one great-great grandchild; one brother and sister-in-law, Rev. Tom (Clois) Smith of Mt. Airy.

Funeral Services will be held on Sunday, December 20, 2009 at Cox-Needham Chapel at 3:00 P.M with Rev. Tom Smith officiating with interment to follow in the Midkiff Family Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Sunday, December 20, 2009 from 1-3 PM at the funeral home. WILSON - Jobe Harrison Bowen, 96, of Eden Terrace, and formerly of Wilson, died on Tuesday, December 15, 2009, at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Born April 3, 1913, in Surry County, NC, he was the son of the late John Wesley and Louella Kiger Bowen and the husband of the late Evie Evon Holland Bowen.

A graduate of Pilot Mountain High School in Pilot Mountain, NC, he was retired from the Internal Revenue Service. He was a U.S. Army Air Force Veteran of World War II and a member of Forest Hills Baptist Church in Wilson, NC, where he was a former Deacon and Treasurer.

Survivors include two sons, Turl Bowen of Charlotte, NC, and Jerry Bowen of Wilson, NC; a daughter, Kathy Bowen of Spartanburg, SC; a brother, Trent Bowen of Blacksburg, VA; a sister, Nancy Matthews of Pilot Mountain, NC; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be 1-2 p.m. Saturday, December 19, 2009, at Thomas-Yelvertson Funeral Home, Wilson, NC. Funeral Services will follow at 2 p.m. at the funeral home with the Rev.
