CAMBRIDGE, MA - Doris Barr Grove of Cambridge, Massachusetts, died on Saturday, October 17, 2009 at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem, North Carolina after a nine year battle with ovarian cancer.

She was born on April 28, 1935 in the Mountain View Community of King, North Carolina, to George and Beulah Boles Barr.

She was the beloved wife of Arthur Grove, Jr., of Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Doris was a graduate of Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem and Suffolk University Law School in Boston. She began her career teaching school in North Carolina and then worked with the United States Navy Department in Mississippi where she was involved in Nuclear Submarine development. Later she transferred to the Bureau of Ships in Washington, DC, where she and her husband were married at the Navel Chapel in 1966. She enjoyed travel to all parts of the world, especially to Europe where with her husband she spent many Christmas holidays in Paris. Her courage and determination in the face of declining health were a source of inspiration to her family and friends. Doris was a life-long social activist who promoted racial and gender equality. One of her proudest and most vivid memories was participation in the 1963 Civil Rights March on Washington where she was witness to Martin Luther King's "I have a dream" speech. Her friends transcended religious and social boundaries and she was both loved and respected for her outspoken and intellectual opinions. Perhaps her greatest legacy is that of being a strong female role model for her many nieces and young women she met during her life.

She is survived by her husband, Dr. Arthur Grove, Jr., of Cambridge, Massachusetts, and two brothers, Scott Barr, of King, NC, and Charles Barr, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

KING - Doris Edwards Tuttle, 74, died Wednesday, October 21, 2009 after her struggled attempt to recover from heart surgery.

She was born July 15, 1935 at home on Edwards Farm Road, King, NC where she resided until her death. She was born to Kate Westmoreland and Homer Cyrus Edwards.

Doris' youth was in Chestnut Grove United Methodist Church, the tobacco fields, feed barns, and King School. After finishing nursing training at Mercy School of Nursing, Charlotte, NC in 1956, she entered NC Baptist Hospital Nurse Anesthetists School and graduated in 1961 as one of a class of 4. Her anesthesia career extended 47 years until age 73 and she claims the Novant Retirement recognition of being the longest serving nurse anesthetists in Winston-Salem. She extended comfort to her patients. She entered her uninterrupted sleep in peace at Forsyth Medical Center where she was a nurse anesthetists for 34 years of her 47 years of service. Her career continued at J.R. Jones Medical Clinic in King, NC until her final 74th year. A frequent phrase she used was "If you can live long enough.........." She lived long enough to bless many friends, family, and strangers with generosity and free spirit. There was no governor on speaking her unstrouded opinions. Her clarity of thought and amazing insight proved to be accurate. Her satiric nature was expected by those that knew her good heartedness. Doris inspired high achievement in others living by the words " It is within your reach" and again " If you live long enough". She left a wide wake of friends to whom she would say "Get busy, Get going.

She leaves daughters Thea Kate Tuttle of Tobaccoville, Ellen and Tim Montgomery of Walnut Cove, Laura Anne Rice of King, grandson Miles Perry Montgomery of Wilmington; brother Wayne Edwards of Ripley, OH, Norma Gentry of King and Karen Newsome of Winston-Salem; nephews, Chad, Jacob, Nathan, and Dudley; nieces, Jennifer, Betsy, and Marla; friends, Dr. Bill Brown, Lillian Bailey, Jane Mosko, Peggy Jones, Ellen Maley, and Sue McDowell, Betty White.

Dying before her, her parents, lifelong friends, Diddy Caudle Heath, Doris Jane Barr Grove and Brenda Lawson.

As a sports enthusiast, Wake Forest ranked number one. Biography and politics were her forte. Knitting, weeding, and gardening and continuing to nurse were woven threads throughout her life. If Doris could freeze one moment in her life, it would be the numerous ones she spent with Miles. She traveled world wide with him, her three daughters, and friends.

Sincere appreciation goes to Dr. Walley, Dr. McConville, Dr. Hadley, and Dr. Gallop for trying earnestly to save her.
(photo)

GREENSBORO — Geneva Lois Isom Middleton, 92, went home to be with the Lord Saturday night, October 24, 2009 at Wesley Long Community Hospital.

The loving woman known by many endearing names such as Mom, Mommy, Grandma, and Granny just to name a few was born October 9, 1917 to sharecroppers Zack Henry Isom and Louisa (Isa Lou) Abbott Isom. Geneva, a native of Walnut Cove, NC, was the Granddaughter of Joseph Isom after whom the Isom Baptist Church of Walnut Cove is named.

Granny, as many called her in her later years, was preceded in death by her parents, nine siblings, nieces, and nephews.

She is survived by her six children; Lorraine Middleton Whorley, Robert Leonard Middleton, Wayne Harold Middleton, Alan Hale Middleton, Billy Ray Middleton, and Lois Middleton Renn, 15 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandchild, along with many spouses, nieces, nephews and loving friends.

Living a very simple life, she cared for and brought joy to many. Granny worked very hard her whole life, from working the farm as a child, mill work, many years at Woolworth's department store in Greensboro, to retiring and continuing to care for friends, relatives and grandchildren. She never stopped caring for others regardless of her own wellbeing. Her sincere love for her family and desire to make sure they were all safe and happy is believed to be the drive for her passion for life. Her strong will to live was evident through her living long past her siblings, younger and older. Love is what kept her with us for so long. She would always say, no matter her condition, "Be careful, take care of my babies and hurry back". Her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren are all very thankful for the many years of love, care and memories that she gave to us. She will be greatly missed and forever live in the hearts of all who were blessed to know and love her.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Hospice of Greensboro.

Published in News Record on October 28, 2009
