For swcarr56, I noticed you had posted family bible notations for Nathaniel Cook. My Nathaniel Cook who died 1855 in Lancaster County is my oldest known ancestor. Do you have any information on his parents or family? I know he married first Sarah Hough and then Molsey Baskin. My ancestor is through Amos Franklin Cook. Please email me at jcook5650@aol.com if you have any info.

Genealogy @ the Reed Gold Mine

Does anyone out there have a connection to the John Reed of the Reed Gold Mine SHS in Cabarrus County?

We at the Reed Gold Mine are currently preparing for the 2012 Fall Harvest Festival on October 13th, from 10 am to 4 pm, and are looking for some help in making this another great event for our visitors. This event is an opportunity to teach people about the history of the greater Charlotte region when John Reed would have been alive, a period roughly between 1780 – 1850.

Before starting the first gold mine in America, John worked on his farm like most of his neighbors in this region. Even after his golden discovery, John continued to farm on a portion of his land until his death in 1845. We would like to focus on this part of the sites history for this event. If possible, we encourage you to come out for this event and dress for the time period. If you would like information on costume interpretation for this time period, please feel free to contact the site.

I would also like to extend this offer to any local genealogy groups to come out for the event and bring any of their resource materials. Like last year, visitors will be invited to come and see if they’re related to John Reed or any other famous Carolinians. Invitations are also being extended to local chapters of the DAR, Colonial Dames, and other similar groups to come out. Visitors are encouraged to bring out their own family trees and see how they all fit together, as well as try to help us fill out our Reed family tree.

If you know of anyone else who you think might be interested in coming out or you think would fit well with this theme, please let them know to contact me so that we can work on figuring out where they would fit into the event best and setting them up with a spot.

Thank you in advance for your support,

Michael Scott
Historic Site Interpreter II
Reed Gold Mine State Historic Site

#704-721-4653

I am searching for the parents of Thomas William Davis (b. 27 Sept 1827, d. 3 Mar 1900) and Wesley T. Davis (b. abt 1823). Both Thomas and Wesley were listed as cabinet makers and were living in Montgomery County, NC. in the 1850 census, but were jewelers in the 1860 census. Thomas' obituary list him as a watch maker.

The brothers may have been born in Randolph County, NC. Thomas and Wesley may have had another brother named William. Thomas married Margaret Ingram in 1851 in Stanley County, NC. Wesley married Welthy A.
Seeking to correspond with any Miller families in Stanly Co. NC. In particular, looking for descendants of Wendel Miller and Nicholas Miller whose lines were on the Dutch Second Creek in Rowan Co. NC as early as 1760. Many of their children and grandchildren filtered down into Stanly Co. NC around Albemarle and Ridenhour. Some of these lines had lived in Gold Hill and Morgan Townships in Rowan earlier.

Would like to also find descendants of Ivy Miller 1821-1866, a son of Jonathan Miller, believed to be the son of Michael Miller 1752 PA - 1793 Rowan NC. This Michael, and there were many in Rowan, was the son of Nicholas, brother of the famous Wendel Miller. These two were sons of Michael Müller of Dörrenbach Germany who had come to America in 1739, landing in Philadelphia, and then settling in Lancaster & Berks Co. PA.

Thanks,
Kevin Miller
Madisonville, KY
(270) 559-4789
kevin.miller@hopkins.kyschools.us

I'm looking at a transcribed marriage cert from 1877. The parents of Jacob Underwood (born around 1807) are listed as David Dilamote, Billy Dilamote. A 1880 Census confirms his parents are from North Carolina.

Jacob is a mulatto (black/negro). If he was born around 1807 he may have been a slave. His parents have different last names.

I can not find any Dilamote families in North Carolina. This may have been transcribed incorrectly.

Does this last name ring a bell to anyone?
Is it similar to any other names you may have found or know?
Do you know of any David's that married a Billy?
What woman's name would Billy be short for?

I'm attaching the transcribed marriage cert.

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Ransom Green Dick parents were John Dick and Susan Hathcock. He was married to Minta Hatley, daughter of Hastin Hatley and Basheba Harwood. Ransom's brother Allen Green Dick married Minta's sister Cynthia. Minta & Cythia were probably cousins of your Elizabeth Hatley. Hastin Hatley had a brother William C Hatley.

To my knowledge, neither Ransom nor Minta has been continued in our part of the family. My Grandfather was Ellis Green Dick and was called either EG or Green. His father was Eli Holly Dick and his mother was Lucinda Eudy.

I am the grandson of Merritt and Eula (Ivey) Blalock. His father was also a Merritt but I'm unsure of the number of marriages. My grandparents had 4 children - Merritt (deceased and nicknamed "June" although he was the third "Merritt"), Frank (my father, also deceased), Molly (deceased), and Bobby (or Robert, deceased). "June" and his wife Lelia had two sons, Bob (or Robert) and Merritt (the fourth so named). Both are alive and living in NC.

I noticed that there were several people listed on the 1850 Stanly County Census with Ransom as either first or middle name. I am wondering if all these families might be connected. My Great-great-grandfather was Ransom Green Dick who married Minta Hatley. There was a Motley, an Eudy, and a Honeycutt that I remember off the top of my head.

Green and Minta seem to turn up alot on that same census and I think they are also unusual given names.

Does anyone have any ideas?

One son, Cadwell Alexander Albright, was my great grandfather married to Emma Coble Albright. I think they all lived in Alamance County, North Carolina although I hear that 4 brothers moved from Germany to Pennsylvania and then some moved to North Carolina. Any help would be absolutely great. You can email me at gaylesterken@yahoo.com

I just now remembered I have them. I will look them over and see if I can verify what she said; she was working from memory. My note about Caswell is that he was James Caswell Taylor 1829-1900, Leota's estimate.
His father was Edward Taylor Jr who married Betsy Reed or Reid and lived in Davidson County on Beaver Dam Creek. His dates are 1770-1830.

I need to look at my notes to make any more sense of them.

Green W Dunn family Stanly/Anson Co. Areas

Would appreciate any help in finding more about my Dunn family from the Stanly/Anson County areas. Green W. Dunn born abt. 1801, married to Martha Hunter. We have more info on Martha, such as she was born around 1806 in Anson County to Ephraim and Sarah Crocker Hunter. We have come to a dead end on Green W., however. Green and Martha had two children, Cyrus Furman and Ophelia Jane. Cyrus Furman served in the Civil War. Any info regarding his service would be great. There is also a story passed down that someone in this time period died in a gunfight. We assumed it was Cyrus as he died at a young age, but the 1880 census, taken just before he died, states that he had consumption. His wife, Rue Malinda Morton, remarried to Eben Hearne. She herself died in 1887. Cyrus and Rue Malinda had 5 children: Bolden or Bessent (listed differently on censuses), Joseph H. or Josiah (again listed differently), Cyrus Lee or Lee Charles, Martha, and Rosa. We now think either Bolden/Bessent or Joseph/Josiah may have been the one who was shot as Bolden disappears after the 1880 census and Joseph is listed as dying on November 11, 1894 at the age of 25. Any help or further info would be greatly appreciated.
