HUGHES family circa 1774

I am seeking info on a Hughes family in Rutherford Co area,
John Hughes born before 1774 in Mountain Creek, Rutherford Co (was it Tryon Co at that time?). He moved to Burke Co. Perhaps someone here has some knowledge of a Hughes family from the area. . .there are many records of this John Hughes in Burke Co, he was a waggonner by trade and reported to have married a woman Keziah. He shows up a good deal in the minutes of the Burke Co court records 1778-1790s :).

Abraham, son of Jacob Scott Clark, Sr was born in 1789. Jacob Scott Sr had a son, Jacob Scott Clark Jr who married Sarah "Sally" Webb.

The Abraham you are seeking info on was born in 1798 and married to Sarah Webb did indeed have a daughter named Lavinia Josephine (or possibly Josephine Lavinia). I am descended from Abraham and Sarah.

Can be confusing as I show 9 Abraham's and 6 Jacob's in the family.

My line= Abraham 1745>Abraham 1766>Abraham1798>John 1840>John 1871>Fred 1916>Fred 1938>Fred (me)>Fred & Abraham John (my sons).
Fred

A cemetery in Cleveland County, NC, that was long forgotten has been rediscovered. In this cemetery are people descended from William Mode and children, William McEntire and children, Archibald and Nancy Williamson, and others including Hords and Bartees. A restoration is planned, and we have been fortunate to have contacted descendants of most other than the Williamsons, with exception of one man in Georgia. Buried here are Archibald "Baldy" Williamson and wife Nancy Crowder Williamson, a daughter Mary Williamson who died at age 6, a daughter Nancy Williamson Hord, and possibly a son Milton L. Williamson and his wife Rachel Nowlin Williamson.
If you are a descendant of this family, and have interest in learning more about the cemetery, please respond to this thread!
Thank you, Lynn Wesson, descendant of William McEntire.

My GG Grandfather was John M. Moore of Iowa. His father was Daniel Boone Moore. While many of the family trees have him listed as the son of Isidor Moore, in the census records, John M. Moore states that his father was born in North Carolina.

John M. Moore was born in Missouri and it appears that his family was a part of the migration to Kentucky and later to the Missouri territory.

Hopefully your Joseph Moore is my connection to NC.

What do you think?

Based on a family tree I found, {take info with grain of salt} James was the son of Benjamin and Mary VanZant Biggerstaff. Benjamin was born in Rutherford County, NC 1744 and died Feb 1, 1782 in Charleston SC. Mary VanZant Biggerstaff was born in Bucks County, PA. Dec. 17, 1746 and died in NC in 1816. (probably living with a child as she was a widow).
Benjamin was the son of Samuel 1719-1764 and Elizabeth Moore Biggerstaff 1724-1786.

We have a Y-DNA project at FamilyTreeDNA on the McGaha/McGahey (etc) surname. If you know of a direct male descendant of the Rutherford County family, please consider participating in the study. We'd like to know if these folks migrated down from VA or PA; there are quite a few participants so far and the results could help direct your research. See the site at http://www.familytreedna.com/public/McGaughey/ click on the Y-DNA Results tab. Currently we have about 50 members, and many of them seem to have connections to the Mode clan in Western North Carolina, specifically in the counties of Cleveland, Rutherford, and McDowell. Some of the Mode clan ended up as far away as Oregon. Many of those in our group have done DNA testing as well, which has helped tremendously in tying up loose ends. Family members have submitted a variety of material including pictures, documents, Civil War records, and genealogical material.

Hope you can join us and pass the word.

William Mode jmode@mindspring.com
Sharon H.
I'm a descendent of Silas Jackson Walker and noticed that he lists his parents as being born in South Carolina on several of the Census. Most the lines here have James Walker as his dad, and Sarah Walker as his mom. James was born in NC, and there's no marriage certificate for he and Sarah. There is the marriage cert for James and Mary Powell.
Does anyone have any more info on Silas? I've done extensive searches - the closest I came to a possible parents in South Carolina is the Absolom Walker family in Spartanburg, SC. They have many of the family names, but still no Silas.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

In September I traveled to Gordon County, Georgia looking for information about James Owens and Priscilla Waldrop Owens. In the county court house I found a petition for the appraisal of the estate of James Owens who died of "late". It was in the December 1865 session of the court of ordinary.

I can not find him in 1850. I believe that I've found him in 1830 and 1840. If I'm correct then he was married prior to his marriage to Priscila Waldrop.

This sounds like my branch of the Downey's also. I have come late to this game so I hope this message reaches you. A Jackson Downey listed in the 1870 census in Rutherford County, N.C., married to Catherine White, would be my great-grandfather's father, on my father's side. My information comes largely from what was gleaned from the LDS (Mormon) church records by my aunt and I am recently trying to fill in the gaps mostly from the same resources, now on-line. I am not a member of the Mormon church. To date our best guess seems to be a Thomas Downey b. ~1789 as Jackson's father but I haven't seen direct evidence, birth record, census, etc. I found 2 Thomases as you mention but the one listed in the 1820 and 1830 Census also living in the Rutherford County area makes more sense to me. The mystery is why Jackson is not mentioned as a member of the earlier Thomas Downey households if this connection is true.

I would like very much to trade notes with you. My record keeping is a bit disorganized because I am new at this.

Lewis Downey
Salt Lake City, Utah

You have more pre-Jackson information than I have come across so far. I am interested in helping out and certainly learning what you may have found since your last post.

Jackson & Catherine went on to have 11 offspring & apparently his last residence was Jackson County in northern Alabama around 1900. I have a rough family tree that I can save as a jpeg file that I would love to have critiqued/corrected.
