Hello,

I am looking for my Basinger family from Rowan County. My gg-grandmother was Beulah Marie Basinger who married a William H. Martin. She was born about 1881 and died around 1962 in, I believe, Gloucester County, NJ. Her family was from Salisbury, NC, but I have no clue what her parents names would be!

My Beulah is *not* to be confused with another woman who is also sometimes referenced as Beulah Basinger who married a William Vance Cooper. I think they were born around the same year as well.

Any chance you have any info of her in your records? Thanks!

Hi. I should have read this first before replying to the other one. But I do think that my Aaron was the only Aaron Freeman in Rowan, Buncombe, Iradell and other counties in close proximity. I studied tax rolls, and census data from the first census in 1790 through 1820. The only Aaron Freeman's shown were my Aaron and a son Aaron Jr.

I hope you can get some clarification from your relative. I may do some more work and find another Aaron. If I do I will let you know,

Joe

Info provided in North Carolina marriages 1741-2000 has the Aaron Freeman in question marrying Mary Bentley on December 17. 1769. (Mary was the daughter on Thomas Bently and Hannah Beasly. I have also seen a copy of the marriage bond between Aaron and Mary giving her family's consent to the marriage

While I am uncertain about Aaron's ancestry and even birth, most researchers assume that he was 24 years old when he married in 1769 He is listed in both the 1810 and 1820 census. I have shown his date as 1825. I don't know the source of this info, but it seems clear that he was deceased by the time of the 1830 census.

If you are interested in the documentation I have on Aaron, see my tree (Joe B Freeman Family Tree) on Ancestry.com Among other things, there is information from work done by a Mary Hill Mosher from a book she published on colonial North Carolina Freeman families. She identifies several Aaron Freeman's including the one who is my ancestor (also the one in Rowan) She disproves that he is the Aaron Freeman they descended from a John Freeman in Bertie She also lists his known male children (starting with Joshua in 1770) and notes that there were female children whose names she could not identify.

Sorry the Hall reference was not one of yours. My Aaron, of Rowan NC, is just not old enough to be the father of your Sarah.

Joe Freeman
Thanks for the reply Joe. I have studied the James Hall that you mention, and I don't think he is our James Hall. Several Hall families lived on 4th and 5th creek at the same time in Rowan. I actually think the person that has Aaron as Sarah's father is possibly correct, as he knows much more than I do on Ancestors. I tried to connect with him several times and he did not answer. I will keep looking for other Aaron's in other places and etc. Was the other Aaron you mentioned in NC? Also I have marriage license of Adam and Sarah in Rowan if anyone interested.
I wish I could help with your Freeman lineage, but I can only confirm your doubt that your Sarah was the daughter of Aaron Freeman. If they are closely related, they must be siblings. My research has found at least three male Freeman's in Rowan early enough to be the parents or Sarah or Aaron, however, I have found nothing to confirm that Sarah and Aaron were related at all.

I did find a reference to a James Hall in a book written in the late 19th century called A History of Rowan. County, North Carolina. On page 262: "in 1778 the Rev. James Hall became pastor of Fourth Creek, Concord and Bethany Churches"

There is also a reference to a Dr James Hall being active in the formulation of camp meetings in 1799. I hope this is useful for you.

I believe that I am descended from Aaron Freeman through his son Thomas and have tried to trace the ancestry of Aaron.
Many family trees trace Aaron Freeman's ancestry back to Bertie, however, other published research shows this is not correct. So I have tried to find more about Aaron in many ways without much success.

Joe Freeman

My 3rd great grandparents were Adam Hall and Sarah Freeman, who married in Rowan, NC in 1778. I have most of the Adam Hall's info. and know they are mine, but Sarah Freeman's linage has eluded me so far. I was told that Aaron Freeman was her father, but the one in NC. would have to be her brother as she was born abt. 1759 or so. Bernie

There is a Mary E. Sewell listed in the 1900 census at Kings Creek (North Carolina). She is listed as married to a
James F. Sewell - birth 1856. Children listed are James
Allen Sewell, Sara E. Sewell, and Mary H. Sewell. On another message board someone told me that this is the Sewell family (my family). They said that it was common in those days for people to change their first names whenever they wished....(John S. to James F.????)Is there any possibility that the census taker just got the first name and initial wrong??? But, my grandfather DID have a brother named James Allen Sewell born in Tennessee in 1887 and a sister named Mary Hester... I have never heard of the Sara E. Sewell.

Anyway, this is really hard to trace, but I will take your suggestions and keep looking.

Thank you so much!

Hello,
Mary Elmina Jones (Sewell) was born on 22 September 1968 in North Carolina and died on June 15, 1905 in North Carolina.
She is buried in the Chestnut Hills Cemetery in Salisbury, N. C. I have located her gravestone but do not know where in North Carolina that she was born or who her family was. I can see a family that I think might be her family but have nothing to confirm that.

John Samuel Sewell was born on November 22, 1856 in North Carolina (we believe) and died on March 2, 1938 in Roanoke County, Virginia. He is buried in the Alls Family Cemetery which is located between Catawba, VA and Blacksburg, VA. I have not been able to confirm members of John Samuel Sewell's family (mother and father).

Their son (my grandfather) was Alfred Ray Sewell. He was born in Rowan County, N. C. on June 14, 1903. He died in Virginia on January 27, 1992.

Do you have any suggestions as to how I might proceed in trying to find members of Mary Elmina Jones' family and also John Samuel Sewell's family? My uncle (still living) said that they visited the Jones family in Salisbury many, many years ago when my grandfather's sister, Mary Hester passed away...but a long time has passed since the family
has had any contact with them and my uncle does not remember how to get in touch with them.

Thanks!

So much for my 'excellent memory'. DId you mean Nancy [wife] or Nancy [daughter]

The only I have on Richard Wright, Jr. and wife, Nancy Morgan is a marriage bond/document signed in 1780 at http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/11540201/person/-442565578/ph...

That marriage document should be sufficient in any court.

Our earlier discussion was about the 'other Nancy' - daughter of the above - when I was trying to determine that she was the one who married Mr. Powell. No luck there, but used the info from a son's d/c to indicate that probability - looks like someone started to write Wright and mixed the spelling with White. So, no proof.

is the DAR worth the hassle.... :)

Hi Shirley,
You and I have exchanged messages in the past regarding the connection between the Wright and Powell families. The common denominator being Richard/Nancy. I am trying to become a member of DAR and need absolute proof that she was his wife ( I have a marriage bond copy that lists her name misspelled as Wight, and that won't cut it with the DAR. Do you happen to be a member or have any further proof that I may be able to use?
Thanks for any help.
Shelby Powell

Does anyone have any information on one Ezekiel EADES who married a woman named Mary Polly BARRETT? They were from Rowan County, North Carolina and had a son named John EADS who married a woman named Mary Polly MASSEY. Ezekiel and Polly are my 4th Great Grandparents through their son John and his wife Polly. Ezekiel is as far back as I can go with my fathers line. I have currently had my DNA tested with 23andme and am hoping to unearth some of my EADS ancestors. I run a blog for my EADS family line as well. It would be nice to tie them all in together if anyone has any leads please let me know. Thank you!

Jersey Settlers of NC and MS and Palmer Family

I am interested in finding a connection between the Jersey Settlers of Rowan Cty, NC and the Jersey Settlers of Adams Cty, MS.

My third great-grandfather was Archibald Palmer born NC in 1758. He may have served in for a short time in the Revolutionary War as Archbald Parmer.

I don't find him again until 1782 in Adams Cty, MS. There he marries Hannah Carter (daughter of Nehemiah and Rachel Minthorne Carter, originally from New Jersey )whose family is noted to be an affiliated family of the Jersey Settlers of Adams Cty., MS.

This seems to be too great a coincidence not to pursue. Unfortunately I have no idea of Archibald's parents or possible siblings. Has anyone found any link between the two sets of Jersey Settlers? Has anyone found an Archibald Palmer among North Carolina records?

Any leads would be greatly appreciated. I would be happy to share any information I have.

He's a cousin and very well researched. His name is spelt wrong on the rolls, a victim of the flowerly handwriting of the time, but correctly in his papers. I have about 6 variations I regularly check for the last name. Thanks.

I do not know if this will help you but the only Millsaps I saw listed was a Thomas Melsops. He served from Rowan County, NC. This Millsaps would leave a widow, Barsheba.
Have you tried this and other spelling variations? Perhaps Thomas was akin to your William? Good Luck.

I am researching the "difficult" William Millsaps. I have proven his son Rueben/Ruebin Millsaps fought in the War of 1812 but do not have the final links to prove the father-son relationship or, more important to me, William's service during the American Revolution.

Dr. Capooth listed service for William in his monumental tome "The History of the Millsaps" as follows:

"William Millsaps of Salisbury District of North Carolina was issued a certificate for service to the military and paid 18 pounds on 12 october 1792." I have been unable to find a copy of this certificate. I think I can make a case with the census and court records for the relationship but without William's service record I cannot prove material aid toward the Revolution.

This has been a personal 12 year journey for me and it would mean a great deal to get William onto the American Revolutionary rolls.
