Grave of Sarah McRae Roper HART (d Jan 1849), Widow of James ROPER (b abt 1761-2, d 1833 - Richmond County, NC)

Classification: Query
Surnames: Roper, McRae
James ROPER (b abt 1761-2, d 1833 - Richmond County, NC) died leaving a widow named Sarah McRae ROPER. James was predeceased by his children, but left grandchildren.

James ROPER appears in Census records for Richmond County in 1800, 1810, 1820, and 1830. Mrs. Sara ROPER is enumerated in Rutherford County, NC, in 1840, but the appearance of the SAME NEIGHBORS suggests that these Census returns may be misindexed and presented in the WRONG COUNTY.

Sarah McRae ROPER was remarried to Brittain HART in November 1847, but died only a little more than a year later in January 1849.

There is some very helpful genealogical information which appears in a case decided by the North Carolina Supreme Court in 1849:

Hart v. Roper, 41 N.C. 349, 1849 N.C. LEXIS 231, 6 Ired. Eq. 349 (N.C. 1849).

I have posted some of my findings about this ROPER family within this thread at the RootsWeb ROPER Message Board:

I have NOT YET located the underlying records as to the trial court case of Roper v. Hart, the underlying appellate briefs from the Supreme Court case or any other primary documents not already shown in the indicated thread.

It would be especially helpful to locate a grave for Sarah HART (d Jan 1849), probably in or near Black Jack, Richmond County, NC, as this might yield a grave marker showing Sarah's year of birth. It would also be helpful to learn the whereabouts of the graves of James and Sarah McRae ROPER's children.

Does anyone know of the location of Sarah HART's grave?

Does anyone have information about Sarah ROPER's family? Sarah's mother also seems to have been named Sarah. Sarah McRAE apparently died on 23 May 1844 at her daughter's home in Richmond, NC, at age 106. It appears as if Sarah McRAE may have been residing within the home of Daniel McRAE in 1830.

This is NOT my branch of the ROPER family, but I endeavor to assist other branches with their family history and there seems to still be much that might be learned about James ROPER's family.
