I researching Joseph Manson Caroon and Eleanor F. Tarkington-Tarkentons son Joseph E.Caroon.Through census and marriages,I have found that Joseph E Caroon had a half sister Annie C.Alexander.My line comes through Eleanor Tarkington-Tarkenton and Nathan Alexander,Eleanor (Nellie) and Nathan are my G G Grandparents.Washington County,NC-Mackeys-Lee Mills Township.I have a copy of a will of Hannah Sleight Pettijohn that states that she leaves her nephew-which it would be Hannahs great nephew. The reason I say this,Eleanor Tarkington is Hannah sleight Pettijohn neice.I wondering if anyone may have photoes of Joseph E.Caroon Mother-Eleanor F.Tarkington-Tarkenton.I have a photo of his half sister and her husband,Charles Wheeler Blount Sr.which are my great grand parents.I do hope this has helped some one.In Regards

Dallas,
I don't belong to Ancestry; am just taking advantage of this free trial. I have been to the cemetery you mentioned. I will forward an email to you which has all of the info from the tombstones. Happy to see that someone still knows about "Paris Creek", as that is named after my family. Do you have any info on the Paris'?

This cementery is located near the small Town of Pamlico, I think in
Craven Cty. My Mother and I visited it in the early 80s. It is off a
logging road and the area is extremely overgrown. We had an eldery
gentleman hack out a path with a machete. It's located on Broad Creek,
which ,I think is a tributary of the Neuse River.

I've arranged the list in order of death:

Thomas Carraway: 7/30/1773 - 1/9/1841
Rebecca Carraway, wife of Thomas: 3/4/1784 - 5/29/1865
Rebecca ,wife of Peter Nichols: 4/2/1850 in her 19th year
Daniel Smith Paris: 11/12/1848 - 8/16/1868
Susan Paris: 2/25/1878 - 10/2/1880
Charles S., son of Zadock and Elizabeth: 4/21/1871 - 8/21/1888
Paul C. Paris, son od Paul C. and D.B. Paris: 4/10/1890 - 11/1/1890
Debra B. Paris, wife of Paul Paris: 3/2/1860
Abbie V. Muse; 3/7/1888 - 10/27/1890
Zadock Paris: 8/13/26 - 4/17/1896
Salley A. E. Paris, daughter of Paul C. and Debra B. Paris - 1885 - 1897
John B. Paris, son of Zadock and Elizabeth Paris: 2/1/58 - 5/11/1902
Ralph Muse: 4/17/1901 - 4/22/1905
Louise Muse: 4/22/1901 - 10/23/1905
Barzilla Paris: 1852 - 1909 (married to Nancy Muse b.1851)
Zadock Paris: 5/2/25 - 5/21/1917
Mary Elizabeth Paris: 4/18/57-4/16/1922

I made a mistake about the cemetery being in Craven Cnty. I should have listed it as Pamlico Cnty--just got confused about which county to list it under, as the earlier deaths were when it was Craven Cnty.

I am glad that I was finally able to list this on Ancestry, although I may have done so years ago--

I have more info on the Paris, and Muse families, but will have to move a bunch of stuff to get to it.

I didn't know where the Carraway's resided, but Thomas could read and write, as he signed many legal papers concerning the Paris'. His wife, Rebecca, was a Paris.

I have never been able to figure out where the Paris' lived before coming to Pamlico. This is from memory, from my records: The first Paris that I found in Pamlico/Craven was a George. I think I found land records dating to 1757.

The TC that Lonne mentioned must have been the earlier TC and Rebecca Paris Carraway's son.

Back when I was really into genealogy there were no computers, and it was all "leg-work". There were MANY missed opportunities because when we found records where Paris was spelled with two "Rs", my mother would insist that they were not related to her family.

My email addess is: lynnegchase@aol.com
Thanks, Lynne

Chris, I am estimating between 1800 and 1805. According to the 1800 census, Peter is listed as having 1 male under 10 years of age. Jeddediah was born in 1806 and according to Peter's will William was listed 2nd. Children were listed as Thomas, William,Jeddi, Francis and daughters Sally and Gilly. Hope this will be of some help. Gilly was named after his mother-in-law, Gilly Avery.

I wish I could help you but I have nothing on William or any of his other siblings. I have searched and searched and will continue to search, but there are sooooo many William Harpers that it is hard to determine which one is the correct one. I do have a copy Of Peter Harper II's will and Williamis listed as one of the siblings along with Thomas, Francis Jeddediah, Sally and Gilly. I have found Gilly listed in the BB bonds.

Thanks so much for replying to my post. I just found out about the Kellenburger Room and they are sending me a copy of the obituary. I was told by my mother that his middle initial was L. That is why I thought perhaps Littleton could be his father, although earlier I had thought it was Wilder and still have Wilder on my family tree. I just wanted some verification. I don't have the obit in hand yet, but am anxious to receive it. Am planning a trip to North Carolina to the library there to see what other treasures about my family's past can be un-earthed. Again thank you so much for you reply.

Littleton wasn't his father. 1870 and 1880 Census shows only a daughter Laura for Littleton and Abby. 1900 census has your John living with Annie in Township 3, Pamlico. 1880 Census has two Johns in PAmlico. First one is John T Potter, father is Wilder, living in Township 1. Second one is John, father is William, living in Township 3. Craven Library Kellenberger room website shows a obituary from New Bern Weekly Journal for a John Potter on 7/14/1904 issue.

Harpers were there fairley early, as were the Davis'
Along with those who went on to NC about that time were also LOY/LAY/LEI, FINLEY, HOLT, SPARK, SHARPE, and many others familys.
Davis' may have been earlier in NJ or the Hamptons,
Harpers could be in either of those locations or in CT & MA.

My Jacob Carr married a HARPER and his younger brother Martin Luther married a Elizabeth DAVIS, daughter of the infamous JOHN DAVIS of the CLAYPOOL REBELLION around 1780.
both families had people moved to NC, than to TN & KY.
Others moved to FAYETTE & GREENE CO.
The John Potter I'm really looking for is my great grandfather. He was the son of Littleton J. Potter. He was born between 1866 and 1870 according to different census records and died when struck by lightening on the Pamlico Sound during the summer of 1904. Do the dates match the ones you found. Also I was told his middle initial was either L. or E. Some of the census records say T. though.

Both John W Potters are buried in Celestial Memorial Gardens in Vandemere, NC. I was doing other Potter research and someone provided me with that information. I just added memorials for them on Find-a-grave. If you have any other information on them, I will take it.

Thank you so much. I felt like Nathaniel was his father, but I didn't have much to go on. The 1850 census has him living next to Littleton J. at age 71, in a relatively young community. I felt like he was taking care of his father, but, I'd really like to solidify my theory.

There is another person I wonder if you know anything about. That is my gr grandfather, John Potter that was killed when struck by lightening out on his fishing boat on the Pamlico Sound in 1904. He and Annie Lavenia (wife) lived in Vandemere, but I was wondering if you ever heard any stories about it or know of anyone in the family whom I might ask. I have not even been able to find his grave. It's a real mystery.

My great grandmother was also a Potter from Goose Creek Island. Her father was Malachi Potter. I do not have John in my database but I think John may be one of the sons of Nathanial Potter as Nathanial was married at least 3 times that I know of - to Phereby Campden, Sally Watson, and Britte Lupton. He also had many children of various ages.

Thank you for your reply. I have no idea how our John Moore Harper's parents ended up in Kentucky. What we do know is that he was born near Hopkinsville, Kentucky 28 Feb 1794. We believe he had at least two sisters named Martha and Abigail W. Harper.
So far we only have a DNA match with a direct descendant of Peter. As far as I know - no one else in this family has submitted DNA, but this only means that they have a common ancester, so we could be descendants of one of Peter's brothers too since they would have the exact same Y DNA.
If you have any thoughts on how I might go about finding Thank you again.
Chris

I'm very interested in this possible connection. It's been a long time since I tried to piece together the Harper ancestry. There were several William Harpers in Craven County, and I haven't been able to determine conclusively which one was my ancestor.

All of the William Harpers, however, seem to be descendants of Nicholas Harper, who received a land grant in eastern NC in 1735 on Beard's Creek. He bought more land in the area in 1747. He served in the militia in 1754 and died before 1769. He had at least 4 sons John (d. ~1796), Peter (d. ~1772), Thomas (d. ~1795), and Robert. The Peter Harper who died ~1772 had a son named Peter, and I have reason to think he also had one named Alexander. The younger Peter had the following children: Thomas (b. ~1813), William (m. 1826), Gideon or Jeddiah (b. 1806-8), Frank (Francis?) (m. 1834), Sally (m. 1829) and Gilly (appointed as a ward of William in 1824, apparently due to the death of their mother Mary (Peter's wife)).

I don't know how many children the elder Peter Harper (son of Nicholas) had. Perhaps your ancestor John Moore Harper was one of them. I've never seen that name when searching through the records. How did he end up in Kentucky? Do you know?

Does the DNA testing point only to direct descendants of Peter Harper? Or could it be that you are descended from one of Peter's brothers (since he did have one named John)?
I noted your post about Riley Alexander Harper and Tempe Green. I am searching for information on the parents of my second gt grandfather John Moore Harper born in kentucky in 1794. He had children or grandchildren named Riley, Alexander, Green and Tempe. First son's name was william. Do you have any further information on the William "Mean Bill" Harper that you could share. I don't know how this family connects with mine but there must be a connection. We have also had DNA testing done and matched a descendant of Peter Harper of Craven County, NC.

Seeking any information on Riley Alexander Harper and possible connection to John Moore Harper who was born (supposedly) in Kentucky in 1794. DNA has connected him to the NC Harpers. Names in our Harper family are: Samuel, Riley, Alexander, Nicholas, Tempe and Green. Too much of a coincidence not to have a connection. Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Chris
I went to the NC Archives this past Saturday to look up information on Solomon Green and Betsey Horseen. There was no will for Solomon, but there were estate records filed in 1840. These records do not provide an exact date of death. However, one of the bills paid when the estate was closed included interest calculated from the date the debt was incurred (18 July 1839) until 23 Nov 1839 (possible date of death?). The records identify Solomon's wife as Elizabeth Green. She is provided with a stipend for the support of her family, but names (and number) of children are not listed.

People who bought Solomon's property when it was sold include Elizabeth Green (his wife), Hiram Paul, William Bennett, Samuel Willis, Morgan Banks, Samuel Hoover, Benjamin Martin, William Green, James Bennett, Thomas Bowen, Anson Banks, John S. Banks, Fanny Brinson, Arnet(?) Johnson, Joseph Horsends and James H. Vendrick. Philip Pipkin was administrator of the estate.

I think you are right that Solomon and Betsey were most likely the parents of Tempe Green. If this is the case, it is interesting to note that Riley A. Harper's two wives were probably first cousins. Riley's first wife -- Mary A. Willis -- was the daughter of Agnes Willis (maiden name Horsends).

You don't happen to know if the Harper family still holds family reunions in Pamlico County, do you? I know for a while they had planned to do them every other year -- at about this time of year.
