http://www.gravesfa.org/gen077.htmNancy Jane Purdue, called Jane. She was born in May 1827 in Cheraw, Chesterfield Co., SC, died after 1901, and was buried at Big Oak Church, Montgomery Co., NC. According to the 1900 census, she had five children and four were living. She first married _____ Purvis (?).
Jane had a struggle for survival, farming to keep the children and herself alive. The youngest daughter of Jane's granddaughter, Louzinia Lucas's Ida, tells of when Jane had to go for supplies (i.e., food staples). On the way home Jane was stopped by soldiers who planned to take her supplies. Jane pleaded with them, saying that she had little children to feed and they would starve. Ida Lucas said that the soldier in charge made the men let Jane go when Jane said that her husband was away fighting the war just like them. Jane applied for Widow's Pension Act of 1885 and 1901; both were approved.
