I am descended from William Houston b. 1750 in (old) Augusta County, VA. His grandfather had settled the Timber Ridge plantation and another descendant was Sam Houston of Texas fame. William went to North Carolina, settled in what is now Union County, near Monroe but in the early day was part of Anson and Mecklenberg counties. His grave can be found on the Find a Grave web site for Wesley Chapel Cemetery. Wesley Chapel is a TOWN not a church, located south east of Charlotte, NC. This branch of the Houston family lived there for five generations. William Sr, William Jr., John Patterson, William Henry, and finally David Franklin Houston, who was my grandfather. Hope this helps!

James Addison Alexander, Mecklenburg, N.C.

I am searching for James Addison Alexander and wife Margaret C. Alexander of Mecklenburg, North Carolina.

The marriage records I can find, list James Addison Alexander and Margaret C. Alexander, June 29, 1816. There is no other surname listed for the wife so I am assuming she also was an Alexander, which is entirely possible, since there are at least four Alexander families living in that area during the time.

What I do know is this:

They had at least two daughters, a Laura Minervia (or Minerva) Alexander (born 12 Feb 1828 in N. Carolina and died 27 Sep 1872 in Ozark, Arkansas) and a MF Alexander (no known names for those initials at this time). I have no birth or death dates for MF, although I do know her husband's last name was Lucas and they lived in San Augustine Co., Texas, in 1852.

Laura Minervia ended up marrying William Wray, originally of White Plains, Brunswick, Virginia, but they were in Fayette Co, Tennessee, in 22 Dec 1846, when they married. That leads me to believe that James Addison and his wife might have immigrated there from N.C. as Laura was only 22 at the date of marriage.

Any information on James and Margaret, their daughters Laura Alexander Wray and her husband William Wray, and MF Alexander Lucas and her husband "Unknown" Lucas, will be greatly appreciated. This is a major roadblock in my research.

Hi Linda, I saw this old post...I was in Murfreesboro yesterday to see the Jetton Cemetery in the Old City Cemetery downtown. FYI unfortunately it was all locked up with a high barbed wire fence surrounding it and no one knew who was in charge of it or who maintained the key. I was referred to the Library and still no luck..it was mown and the plaque referred to the original Presbyterian Church burned during the Civil War. I was very irritated to say the least mainly because there was no contact info sign as there should be...very inconsiderate. I had just been to the old city cemetery at McMinnville an hour before and most of the graves had been vandalized there so I understand the protective security but a referral sign would have been a good idea if you're going to lock up someone's ancestors. Anyway...I spent some time in the library genealogy and looked at land deeds in a book called " Land Deed Genealogy of Rutherford C. Tennessee Vol 1. 1804-1813." by Helen and Tim Marsh....IN THERE THERE WERE 3 LAND DEED NOTES FOR THOMAS WHITE. Archibald White refers to John White, Thomas White, James Walker and Hugh Edgar ALL as his "SON IN LAW" what do you make of this...error or should I be looking for a daughter of Archibald Who's husband had brothers also named White...not likely right? or is it?

So good to hear from you. I do not have any information on the parents of William Edward Gray or Catherine Rodgers. They are both brick walls for me. The Dulin comes from the name of Catherine's oldest son whose name was Asa Rodgers Dulin, so I assume that William was her second marriage. Catherine was living with Asa's family in both the 1860 and 1870 censuses. Family records said that she was living in Tippah County, Mississippi at her death and she was around 100 years old.

My ancestor was their son Sam B. Gray (1815-1899) who went to Texas and married Sarah Matilda Patton (1826-1889). Their son William Marion Gray (1844-1932) was my great grandfather. When you renew your ancestry subscription, you can look at my tree. I know it needs tweaking, especially Joshua Mathias' family.

My email is sanecks@flash.net if you want to contact me. It is always nice to meet a cousin.
Sandra

I am a descendant of William Edward Gray and Catherine Rodgers Some have her listed as Catherine Rodgers Dulin, but marriage records have Rodgers. Their son, Joshua Mathias, b. 1812 or 1815 in Anson County, NC, d 1862 in civil war in Mississippi. He married Martha Ann Mask. Their son James Robert Gray, b. 1851 in NC d. 1896 in AR, married RhodaAnn Josephine Hall. Their Son Robert Newton, my grandfather b. 1881 in AR, d 1855 AR, married Ollie Maebell Costner. My father was James Jefferson Gray, b 1911 in AR and d. 1968 in AR. My mom is still living.

If you have any information as to ancestors I would be happy to correspond with you. Some one has William as being John and Kammet (Greer) Gray as his family. I unfortunately added that info to my tree but I am sure it is wrong. As soon as I can renew my subscription to Ancestry, I will correct this

I hope this helps. I do know that William Edward died in Alabama in 1848. Catherine lived her remaining years with a son in Tippah county, Mississippi. Several of the children went to Texas. Parker Preslar married ____ Matilda (I think it is Elizabeth but dont have info in front of me)Gray. Her and Parker are buried in the Dennis Cemetery in Texas.

My email is wegosborn@yahoo.com. If you contact me directly, please put Gray Genealogy in the subject line.

Thank you.

Elaine Osborn

Thank you so much for your intrest. This is everything that is known. He[John] came to this area about 26yrs of age. He went to work at a sawmill in Doerun, Ga. He was already skilled at this type of work. He would never give any information on where he came from or any family saying it was best to leave the past in the past. It would only bring trouble, he said. My grandmother[his daughter-in-law] said he told her one time that he had sisters named Jessie and Ellen. Not sure what is true. He could have change his name. He was very protective about his past and would get angry when questioned. 1930 census says parents were from France. So he told different things at different times. Not sure I can go anywhere with what I have. Again, thank you for your intrest.

Try searching for sisters, Jessie and Ellen HALL instead, cradle to grave, through the records - birth, marriage, death. burial , censuses, etc. They may lead you back to their parents (and John Samuel, too, of course)

Where did you get their names? I didn't find them on any census. And where did you get the parents birthplace as France?? The censuses I found (1900, 1910) said they were born Georgia.

Does anyone have any information, and especially a listing of those buried in, this cemetery? The information I have read indicates it is a slave cemetery, but my ancestors, the Browns of Steele Creek, owned land that became part of Douglas Int. Airport, near where this cemetery is located. There are no marked graves for Jesse and Mary Brown in Steele Creek Presbyterian Church Cemetery, and I am trying to locate where they are buried. This would be after 1801. Two of Jesse and Mary's sons married Herrons, so you can see why I must check on this cemetery. Anyone with any information please let me know (jbrevell@yahoo.com) or reply here. Thanks so much.

Thank you for your reply. My further research indicates that the James dob c1802/3 s/o Peter and Polly is not the same as my James dob c1795. There are now so many corrupted genealogies on Ancestry that I pity the current researchers looking for good info. Peter's will in 1817 named "five eldest" children, one of whom could still possibly be the ancestor of my James. However, none of the "youngest children" whom you mention would be in my ancestral lineage. Also, I've seen no proof of who Peter's father is even though several folks have posted various lineages. What is your Newell lineage? You may contact me "jjnewell 'at' nehp.net" -Regards, Jim N.

I was just looking up someone from my family and happened upon this information from family trees. It is a geneology pdf that has exactly what you are looking for. This was the site: amilytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/j/.../PDFGENE15.pdf. I don't know if that will work. I believe they were all descended from William Simpson Jr. I think. I hope this is helpful. I was looking into the Newell line for my family. I found Mary Polly Simpson 1773 married to Peter Newell on 11 Sept. 1801 in Mechlenburg Co. NC son of William Newell and Nancys. He was born 01 Jun.1775 in Caswell Co. NC, and died 1817 in Mechlenburg Co. NC. Children were: Simpson Newell b.1812 d.1832 Pike, GA, and James Newell, Elizabeth Betsy Newell, George Washington Newell, Robert Newell, and Thomas Newell. I don't know if this is helpful to you. But I hope it is.

Hi Wilma,
Regarding your message from the ancestry.com message board, Mecklenburg County is located in the very southern part of Virginia. Matter of fact, it is closer to the center of the map and south, just above the State of North Carolina.
By the way, what was the name of the Blair that your relative married? I am also doing family research on my BLAIRS. I have researched my family of BLAIRS back to 1809. My grgrgr grandfather(London Blair Sr) was born in Ameila Co.>Bedford>Amherst. Then his son (London Jr) must have been sold, because my grgr grandfather spent most of his years in Nelson Co and had all of his children there with the exception of the first child. In summary(but there is more), he and several of his childrens were in Augusta Co., VA by 1910. Do you have any of these people in you family? Northan Blair, Elias(Ellis) Blair, Florence Hill, Ardell Martin, Peachy Blair.
Please write back and tell me what was the name of your BLAIR relative.

So Semple Orr and Sample are definitely two different people? I guess I was misinformed on the matter. Lucy Colins married "SEMPLE" Orr and not Sample. Sorry for misunderstanding. I do have several Sample Orrs in my line. If Semple Orr is a part of my line, I have no idea where he fits in. Thank you for setting me straight.
