John Brisbane Springs declared insane owned my ancestor Nancy

I have been tracing my gggggrandmother, Nancy Springs, 1780-1879 who was owned by a member of the Springs family (John Brisbane Springs, 1784-1837/47). In the early 1800s he was declared insane and I have found many entries in the Session Minutes of Mecklenburg county related to his family's attempt to care for him. He was placed under the guardianship of his father, John Jr. and when he died, his brother, WIlliam and when he died, his mother, Sarah. I am trying to theorize what happened to his slaves during this time. I have found evidence that he owned "Nance" from 1785 to early 1800s and then I found her again in the 1870 census as a 90 year old woman who gave her birthplace as Africa! I have also found that his brother's administrator was selling some of the slaves he owned in 1832 one of which was named Nancy. I have more evidence that JB killed one of his slaves named Andrew in 1816 during a "mental fit" which matches the time his guardianships began.

My question is, is it possible to see the details of the minutes? How would I do that? What types of court cases where someone is declared insane during the 1800s would be available to us now? I know that guardianship files are extant for Mecklenburg and will be requesting those through LDS, but what about court records and details? Can anyone help me out on this?

Also I have only been able to access the Ferguson minutes books up to volume 3, so I don't know if there are any more entries in his later volumes after 1830 for JB. Does anyone have those volumes? I just don't have the money right now to buy them and have been going to the Library of COngress (only 11 miles from lucky me). If anyone has the later volumes like 1831 - 1840 or later one, (volume 5 is the one I have purchased so far) could you look to see if there are any entries for John B. or Doctor John Springs? Thanks so much, any help is appreciated.

From the Charlotte Daily Observer, Sunday, 4 December 1910, p. 6 - Mr. D.P. Shaw Dead - Pneumonia Claims Promising Young Lawyer of Lumberton as a Victim - Mr. Duncan Preston Shaw died early yesterday morning at the Presbyterian hospital, where for several days he has been ill with pneumonia. Mr. Shaw was from Lumberton and was only 32 years old. A short time ago he came to Charlotte to [consult] specialists as to his health. While here he was taken suddenly ill and was placed in the hospital. His decline came with unexpected suddenness, so that none of his relatives had been summoned when the end occurred. His wife and two of his brothers, Messrs. T.M. and J.L. Shaw, arrived yesterday at noon. In the afternoon the remains were conveyed to Lumber Bridge, interment to occur in the family semetery.
Mr. Shaw was a lawyer by profesison and already had risen high in it. The esteem in which he was held by those who knew him best was eloquently attested by the fact that in the recent Legislature he represented Robson county in the State Senate. His death comes with crushing force to his relatives and is a cause for sorrow among all who knew and admired him.

Browns and Herrons, early 1800's

Hello,

I have tried without success to find some proof that the name of my great-great-great-grandparents was Jesse and Mary Brown of Mecklenburg County, NC. This information(posted below) appeared in a quarterly from the genealogical society. I am not doubting the information, mind you, but I can find no proof of Jesse Brown's existence. Their son was my great-great grandfather, John W. Brown. He only noted on the census that he was born in Meck. County, NC, and that his father was born in England and his mother in Virginia. He never named them. I have checked passenger lists, census records, marriage records, wills, and cemetery records. No where can I find a record of Jesse Brown's existence. There is no marked grave for him or Mary in Steele Creek Cemetery, although his two daughters-in-law, Mary Herron Brown and Jane Herron Brown are buried there.

Here is what the quarterly said: (parenthesis are my notes)

Two Brown brothers came down from Virginia and spent the night in Mecklenburg County. One brother liked the area so well he decided to stay. That brother was Jesse Brown. (We believe the other brother went to York County, SC).

Jesse Brown was born on January 5, 1748/49. He married Mary whose last name is unknown and here are his Children.

1. Nancy Brown born January 9, 1779.
2. Jesse Brown II, March 4, 1781.
3. Josiah Brown, born Dec. 1, 1781. He married Livina Frazer, Mecklenburg marriage bond dated June 19, 1814. His 2nd wife was Sarah Smith. Their marriage bond dated Oct. 4, 1835.
4.

What is the quickest way to get copies of estate/probate/settlement papers from Mecklenburg county? I am not talking about just the will, but the other papers that the admin or exec has to file to settle the estate. I know about LDS microfilm, and I am waiting on some right now, but I wonder if you can request copies from the Register of Deeds without knowing the book and page, would they do a search? I doubt it, but does anyone have experience with that? I am talking about estates from the 1800s and 1945. Thanks

Hello:

I don't live in N.C.
but have had to REQUEST records by mail.
the mecklenburg county courthouse does not store
death records. Perhaps at one time they did.
But I've Requested uncertified death records thru
the Dept of Health. Its much cheaper than Certified/ Not an Official document. But for genealogy its great !
The oldest death record I got was for 1915-1916.

Usually you can call the Health DEPT (in Mecklenburg Co)
and ask them to LOOK UP THE NAME of the DECEASED.
They may need the YEAR of DEATH.
Then you can send in the fee WITH a SASE.
If you need Marriage Records that aren't classified
as ARCHIVES - then contact the COURTHOUSE.

I am not sure if the Carolina Room in the Library @ Charlotte, NC would have a Death Index?
A Death Index for the State is helpful.
If you don't know what COUNTY your ancestor died,
then its mostly helpful to use the Social Sec. Death Index.
You may learn the County/ general area the Deceased Person Lived.

Cochran and Thompson families in Mallard Creek, NC

I am looking for more information about the following related families: Wilburn O Cochran of Mecklenburg Co, NC married Bessie B Thompson of Fork Twnsp, Wayne Co, NC in 1888. Wilburn's brother Walter P Cochran married Bessie's sister Evaline/Evelyn Thompson in 1890. Both families settled in Mallard Creek. Wilburn and Bessie had the following children: Louisa/Lois, Bertha, Mary C, Wilburn O, Samuel, and Edith. The family later lived in Charlotte. Wilburn and Bessie are buried in the Mallard Creek Pres. Church cemetery. Walter and Evelyn had children Lila/Lilianna and James. Evelyn died in 1903 and is buried in the Sugaw Creek Pres. Church cemetery. Walter then married the youngest Thompson sister, Gertrude in 1905. Walter and Gertrude had children Parks and Lawrence. They lived in Mallard Creek and then moved on to Moore and Cabbarus Counties. I would actually like to find out more about the Thompson ladies- they are my great-grandfather's sisters. He (William Martin Thompson) also settled in Mallard Creek/Crab Orchard when he married Margaret Query. I'm quite stuck trying to trace the Thompson line back past William and his sisters' father.

Alfred Jeremiah Piercy was born at Fakenham Norfolk on the 24th Nov 1873 the son of Joseph Piercy and Frances Buck.
In 1891 he was a blacksmiths labourer working for his uncle Elijah Piercy at Fakenham, to date I can find no later trace of him. He must have been in touch with his brother Ernest William Piercy my grandfather as amongst the possessions that came to me on grandfathers death was a book listing all the familys birth dates. Any information received with gratitude

Re: Family name Owsian

I am trying to trace my Grandfathers surname: Owsian. I know he had several siblings but only know two names, Frank and Helen. My grandfather was Thomas Owsian. Desperately trying to seek other Owsians who were born in New York, around the turn of the century (1900 +/-). Found Stanley Joseph Owsian of Charlotte, Mecklenburg, NC, who was born in New York, 1914. Are we any relation? Look forward to hearing from anyone with the same last surname. Thank you very much.

Who were the parents of Richard Spears who died 23 June 1837, aged 57 years in Mecklenburg County, NC? He is buried in Flint Hill Baptist cemetery in York County, SC beside his 1st wife Keziah Webb.
Two Spears men, James and Alley, came to York County with the Flint Hill founder, Rev. John Rooker, in 1792. Another Spears, whether man or woman is not known for the first part of the name is lost leaving Ñros Spears, was either an original member or very early. Most of the founding group came from Warren Co. NC.

Richard Spears got his York County Indian Lease from his brother, William Spears. There is a Mecklenburg will of Jane Spears which names as her heir of her personal property her brother William and names as her executor her brother Richard Spears and Samuel Ticer (who married Polly Spears).
Richard Spears second wife was Mary Wyatt Rooker, daughter of Rev. John Rooker. They had one child, Clarissa Amelia Spears who married Allen Morrow. After Richard's death, Mary Rooker Spears married Elias Alexander. Any additional information will be appreciated.

My great grandfather William Sidney Kids had 6 daughters and only one son, Ary Silva Kids (b. abt. 1882). Ary later changed his name to Kidd and moved from Lincoln, Co. NC to Mecklenburg Co.,NC. According to census, Ary had one son John W. (b. abt. 1907) and 2 younger daughters: Sarah W., Ollie G.
There seems to have been a fourth child who died young.

I am seeking info on family and hope to find a male Kidd decendant for a KIDD DNA project so I can trace this English family farther back in the 1700s than I have them.
- Julie Cline

I'm working on putting together a book entitled " The Schrantz, Schronce, Scronce, Sronce Family and Their Relatives" and I'm looking for any information on anyone who has this last name or who is related to them. I have found this last name in Lincoln, Catawba, Cleveland, Gaston, Mecklenburg and other counties here in North Carolina. I'm willing to share all the information I have, if you're willing to do the same.

A.E. Leonard, S.R. Parham, Reuben Johnson, pilots

Maryville Times, (Blount Co. TN) Thursday, January 23, 1947:

“Bits Of Long-Lost Plane Found, Minus Traces Of Three Flyers---A wrecked airplane engine and a scanty amount of plane wreckage found in one of the most inaccessible parts of the Great Smokies Park area by members of the Hiking Club on Sunday is believed to be part of the single-engine Beechcraft Army plane, missing since Aug. 12, 1944, according to reports from the C.A.A. The plane carried civilian fliers: A.E. Leonard, pilot; S.R. Parham, co-pilot; Reuben Johnson, mechanic. No trace of the bodies has yet been found.
R.E. Dickens, C.A.A., said this morning that the Army plane had been leased by the Manhattan Corp., at Oak Ridge, and that the serial number of the plane would have to be cleared through Washington for positive identification.
“The plane can be definitely traced,” Dickens said, through its serial numbers, one of which will be that of the Pratt Whitney Corp., and the other of the Army. A wrist watch near the wreckage was the only personal belonging found, and was said to be in excellent condition.
It was first thought the wreckage might be that of the AC-78, a twin motor craft with four passengers, missing since Janaury, 1944, for which a wide search was made and several rewards offered by wives of the passengers. The lake at Calderwood was dragged more than once for wreckage two years ago. Four passengers disappeared with the plane.
It was earlier erroneously announced that the pieces found Sunday were parts of a reconnaissance plane which crashed taking photographs of a wrecked C-45, and in which the two passengers miraculously escaped death, with their camera and film still intact, Dickens said. The small craft was caught in a “downdraft” and wrecked beside the plane being photographed, the occupants suffering only minor injuries.
Ernest Dickerman, vice-president of the Hiking Club, who is an employee if the TVA in Knoxville, said the wreckage found is in one of the most rugged sections of the Smokies. It can be reached only on foot, he said, and is about a four hour hike from Gatlinburg.
The opinion has been expressed that the remainder of the wreckage may be found on the other side of the mountain known as Wooly Top.”

Maryville Times, (Blount Co. TN) Thursday, January 30, 1947:

“Search For Bodies Of Crash Victims Halted---Search for the bodies of three Oak Ridge men, believed to have been killed in an airplane crash in the Smoky Mountain Park in August 1944, was abandoned today, according to a statement made by the State Highway Patrol.
The wreckage, identified as the Army plane in which the missing men left the municipal airport, was found on Wooly Top by members of a hiking club more than a week ago.
Three search parties have failed to find any trace of the bodies. A charred shoe and a wrist watch are the only articles reported found that might have belonged to the fliers.
The men aboard the plane were A.E. Leonard, S.R. Parham and Reuben Johnson, all formerly of Charlotte, North Carolina.”
My aunt of yore, Rebecca, m. uncle William Franklin Alexander on Dec 2, 1832 at Rocky River Presby.Ch.

Wm. Franklin and a couple of his sons went to Laredo, TX,
where Wm. remarried to an 18 year old Carlotta Dovalina. As
I have been able to learn, either his wife, Rebecca, did not go
with him to Laredo, but stayed in Mecklenburg Co., NC, or she returned there from Laredo. At least one son, Richard
Baxter Alexander, remained in Mecklenburg or returned there
to be with Rebecca.

Nevertheless, Rebecca (Gilmer) Alexander died in Mecklenburg Aug 16, 1860, and her Will probated Oct
1861 in which she left her estate to her son Richard B.
Alexander. The executor was Dr. Thomas C. NEAL.

Rebecca's sister, Martha "Patsy", married my greatgrand
father, Marcus Sherman Alexander, who was a bro. of Wm.
Franklin Alexander. [bros m. sis's]. The Gilmer girls had bros
who were physicians in Mecklenburg: Dr. James F. Gilmer, and Dr. S. J. Gilmer.

Can anyone help me find out where Rebecca is buried, and if
she remarried, etc.?

Thanks. Mac of Cypress, TX.

Could someone look at these records and see of there is valuable gen. info in them, particularly locations of McMickens and relationships of McMickens? I think that David, Andrew, Margaret and Nathaniel may be children(?) or siblings of the early David and Mary. If material worthwhile, let me know, I will send for copies from County Register of Deeds. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Black's Mecklenburg Co NC

I have been looking for about 5 years for information on Joseph R Black and Ellen Nicholson's children, Harvey, Jennie, Thomas Franklin, Ralph, Joseph arthur, Louise, Cyrus Osborn, Alice, Mittie, Hugh, Robert, Ernest and Laura Nolie. Laura Nolie married James Haywood Freeman. They were my husband's Grandparents. I have found some info on this family but what I am really looking for are photo's. Laura Nolie died when my father in law was just 3 months old and none of his family has ever seen any photos of Nolie or her family. I would be glad to pay for the cost. Please email me at jen8756@aol.com. thank you, Pat

Also there was a female Griffin and AGE 6 an Emily Osborne, AGE 1 . My line is with F.M. Osborne. He married Serreptha Elliott, also of Mecklenburg/ Union, NC. Would love to correspond with any one with these connections..or any connection, to this line. Thanks, Nicki Osborne
