I am seeking information about this fair, held in Charlotte, from these 2 years. If anyone has access to old news articles, fair programs or other information, I'd appreciate getting in touch. In particular, I'm looking for information on balloonists/parachutists/aeronauts who performed either (or both) year(s). Thank you!

1st Lt. Joseph Edward TATUM was a radar operator on a USAF B-50 bomber that crashed in Alaska 12/22/1948 killing all aboard. His mother & stepfather, Madge & James T. Burton, lived in Charlotte, NC at the time, and Charlotte was given as Joe's hometown in newspaper articles about the crash. His body was recovered and flown initially to his home base of Davis-Monthan AFB near Tucson, AZ. I am unable to locate his place of burial (AZ?, NC?)and would like to honor his service. He is not listed as a burial in a National Cemetery. Thanks for any help.

Some of the older Stansell children may have remained in Johnston or Mecklenburg, NC when others moved southward as many of the names are very similar in more recent times such as 1880 and 1900.

Can anyone in Mecklenburg Co., NC or with access to books do a marriage lookup on John C. Stansell to Margaret (last name unknown)?

Any other early Stansell marriages would also be of interest.

The Stansells left Mecklenburg and went to Johnston Co, NC before going on to GA and AL, then possibly westward.

Thanks.
Thelma Christine Howe Gwynn Obit

(photo)

EDEN — Thelma Christine Howe Gwynn, 93, of Eden died Tuesday, July 21, at Hospice of Rockingham County after a brief illness.

A visitation is scheduled for 10:00 a.m. at Leaksville United Methodist church, with funeral service at 11 in the sanctuary and graveside ceremony at Overlook Cemetery to follow. Funeral services are being handled by Fair Funeral Home.

She was born on June 16, 1916, in Thrift and spent her early years in Homestead, both small communities in Mecklenburg County, before moving to Leaksville in 1924. Her father was William Leroy Howe, and her mother was Carrie Wooten Howe.

She was an honor graduate and the class poet of the Leaksville High School class of 1933. A homemaker while her children were growing up, she worked for many years as a private kindergarten teacher, and hundreds of her students at Golden Hours and Spray Baptist kindergartens will remember her fondly. A faithful member of Leaksville United Methodist Church for over sixty years, she was a children's Sunday school teacher and volunteered as a worker in the Sunday morning nursery. Late in life she took up painting as a hobby, and was thrilled when one of her landscapes was awarded a prize at the Rockingham County Arts Festival.

She was preceded in death by brothers Thurman Howe and Howard Howe and by sisters Lucille Hodges, Margaret (Margie) Knight, Marie Howe, and Dorothy (Dot) Boyd. Her eldest son, Dallas Edmund Gwynn, Jr., died in 2008.

She is survived by her sons, Robert Samuel Gwynn of Beaumont, Texas, and Andrew Howe Gwynn, of Black Mountain, a brother, Roy Howe, of Bradenton, Fla., a sister, Merle Williams, of Reidsville, and seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Our beloved "Meemaw" was a constant reader and especially enjoyed novels by Jan Karon and others who focus on small towns. Under other circumstances she might have cherished the works of Barbara Pym, a wise and witty chronicler of English village life. Pym often writes of those whose quiet, unstinting service to home, church, and community raises them to the status of heroines. She calls them "excellent women." Our mother was one of these.

‘'Wilt thou not ope thy heart to know ‘'

‘'What rainbows teach, and sunsets show?''

Ralph Waldo Emerson

Online condolences may be offered to the Gwynn family at www.fairfuneralhome.com

Published in the News Record on 7/23/2009

Litaker / Laidacker / etc. DNA Project

Seeking DNA test participants. We are trying to establish genealogy links to the Litaker family. This surname is spelled a variety of ways including, but not limited to:

Litaker
Lidaker
Leidaker
Leideker
Leidecker
Laidacker
Laidaker

The 1790 Federal Census shows members of this family were living in Rowan and Mecklenburg Counties but members could have settled anywhere in North Carolina. Research leads us to believe members of this family were in Pennsylvania prior to North Carolina. However, there seems to be a horrible lack of documentation to prove ancestry – thus the DNA project. If the DNA matches, we will know we are on the right track. If it does not match, they we will know to look in other directions.

We hope to find male Litakers (and other similiar spellings) to take the Y-DNA67 test. We are using Family Tree DNA (www.FamilyTreeDNA) for the project.

If you would like more information about this new DNA project, please contact me.

Linda Allred Cooper
lacooper@mindspring.com
I also am researching this family. My husband's father is a descendant of William Jr. and his mother a descendant of James.

I can't find any documentation on William Sr. I have found Elizabeth on the 1850 census of Pike Co. GA living with Biddy (David's wife) and the 1860 census of Pike Co. Ga living with daughter Elizabeth Carriker.

I found a William Story born abt. 1750 who fought in the Rev. War and on the 1790 census but cannot find any connection with the known family.

I also found a John M. Story living next to Biddie Story in Pike Co. GA. He has a daughter named Biddie and a son named David. Are there any connection with the william Story family?

On the 1790 census I found several Storys from the Revolution time--William, Caleb, Isaiah, and John. The each received War Bounty Land Grants of 640 acres except Isaiah who received 274 acres. I there a place to find a listing of the heirs of these people?

Have you found any wills or deeds that would connect any family dots?

My husband's father is an descendant of William Story,Jr. and his mother is a descendant of James Story. both were supposed to be sons of William Story Sr. and Elizabeth, who were born about 1775/6 in Mecklenburg NC.

I found Elizabeth on the 1850 census of Pike Co. Ga living with Biddy(Her age was listed as 75.) and on the 1860 census of Pike Co. she was living with her daughter Elizabeth Carriker (Her age was listed as 90). I have not been able to find William Sr. anywhere.

I also can not find James anywhere until he gets married in GA. He married three times and had 16 children. He moved to Russell Co. AL in the mid 1830'. He is buried in Lee Co. AL.

I also found a William Story who was born abt 1750 and fought in the Rev War. I found him on the 1790 census but have found no connections to the known family.

I ran across a John M Story living next to Biddy Story in Pike Co. GA. He had a daughter named Biddy and a son named David. Does he fit into the family anywhere?

I read somewhere in a search for st pauls's church in Berks Co., PA in "listed the following children Conrad b. 1765? Joseph, and Elizabeth Wittenberger.

http://bolamfamily.0catch.com/gen_whittenburg.html

Somewhere else I have Joseph married Susan ?
Here's the link
The two appeared on a Philadelphia Co., PA tax list for 1751. Later that year that part of Philadelphia Co. became Berks County. We next find Henry as a renter ("inmate") in Windsor Township, Berks Co., PA. Over the years their names appear on Tax List- Henry as head of family and his sons listed as single men.

In 1765, Rev. Daniel Schumacher, of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Windsor Twp., listed the following children in a confirmation record - Conrad Wittenberger, Joseph Wittenberger and Elizabeth Wittenberger. Shortly after this Henry moved his family to North Carolina where in Mecklenburg County, N.C estate records, Frederick Whittenburg was granted executor of Henry's estate on 19 Jan 1767.

Joseph Whittenberg m.

I had an uncle, Ralph Eugene Vanlandingham, born Sept 6, 1920 in Texas. He had a son, my cousin, also Ralph Eugene Vanlandingham who is now residing in Weldon, CA. I know that my uncle's mother's maiden name was McEntire but that is all I know. My cousin does not know much about his dad's family except that there are still relatives in Texas but that his dad was not on very good terms with them. We would like to know more about my uncle. He married Ruth Ware and they lived for many years in Southern California. If you have any information on this branch, please contact me. Thanks so much!!
