Descendants of John Wood
Generation No. 1

1. John 1 Wood was born Abt. 1700 in Ulster, Ireland,
and died date unknown in the Yadkin River Valley, North Carolina, Scalped by Indians. He married
(1) Unknown. We do know she was born in Ireland, and died in North Carolina.

The Wood Family Surname is English or of the Scottish Lowlands origin, History shows waves of migration from Scotland to Ulster in Ireland during the period between 1600 and 1650.

We do not know the exact date of our John Wood’s arrival into this country. It is believed to be sometime between 1710 and 1730. He would have been approximately 40 years
of age at the time, married with at least two or more children. I researched the available ship lists of
Immigrants coming into this country and found many men named John Wood during the early 1700's.
The John Wood name was among those who came into Pennsylvania, where family legend says our Woods came but there is no clear evidence indicating a relationship to us. We do know the family came before the "Great Migration" during the late 1700’s and early 1800's where great
numbers of Irish and Scots-Irish poured into this country.

Children of John Wood and (Wife’s name unknown) are:
+ 2 i. James Calvin2 Wood, born Abt. 1730 in Ulster, Ireland; died Aft. 1785 in Yadkin River Valley in NC.
+ 3 ii. John Wood, born Abt. 1732 in Ulster, Ireland; died Aft. 1790 in Buncombe County, NC.
4 iii. Three additional sons and possibly some daughters.

Generation No. 2
2. James Calvin2 Wood (John1) was born Abt. 1730 in Ulster, Ireland, and died Aft. 1785 in Yadkin River Valley in NC. He married Margaret Mary Ann Doe. She was born Abt. 1745 in
Ulster, Ireland, and died Abt. 1815 in Ashville, Buncombe County, NC.

Children of James Wood and Margaret Doe are:
5 John3 Wood, ll, born Abt 1764
6 Johnathan Wood, born Abt. 1765 in Yadkin River Valley
in NC; died date unknownmin Yadkin Valley in NC.
7 William Wood, born Abt. 1766 in Yadkin River Valley in NC; died in Yadkin Valley in NC.
8 Henry Wood, born Abt. 1767 in Yadkin River Valley, North Carolina died Abt. 1840 in Haywood County, North Carolina.
9 Margaret Wood, born Abt. 1770. She married Benjamin Allison, Jr..
10 James Wood, Jr., born Abt. 1772 in Wilkes County, NC.
3. John2 Wood (John1) was born Abt. 1732 in Ulster, Ireland, and died After 1790 in Buncombe County, NC. He married name is Unknown.

Child of John Wood and name Unknown is:
+ 11 i. Thomas Wood, born Abt. 1793 in Yadkin River Valley in North Carolina (Probably in Wilkes County); died Aft.1880 in Jackson County, North Carolina.

Generation No. 3
8. Henry3 Wood (James Calvin2, John1) was born Abt. 1767 possibly in the Yadkin River valley, North Carolina or Ireland, and died Abt. 1840 in Haywood County, North Carolina. He married

(1) Agnes York Abt. 1790 in Wilkes County, NC. She was born Abt. 1770 in Wilkes County, North Carolina, and died Abt. 1809 in Dillard, Rabun County, Georgia.

He married
(2) Margaret "Peggy" Bryson Abt. 1820 in Haywood County, NC, daughter of James Bryson and Sarah Countryman.
She was born April 11, 1784 in Ninety Six District, South
Carolina, and died January 16, 1847 in Haywood County, North Carolina. Henry Wood was buried in Cullowhee Baptist Church Cemetery.

When I began my research on Henry Wood, I was amazed at the number of stories out concerning Henry.

Below are a few written as they were given to me.
Story #1
Mike Wood, who is unknown to me, but obviously of the same Wood Family as we are, related the following to Lynda Gibbs, also a relative; "Agnes York, Henry Wood's first wife, left him and migrated to Dillard, Georgia with her son Nelson*. It seems, according to Mike, she left when
Henry became the father of a second illegitimate child.
The fact that she left may be true for Agnes and Nelson
are on the old roles of the Church of the Headwaters of
the Tennessee River in Dillard, GA. "

Story#2
Marty Grant, an avid genealogist and a relative of the Bryson and Cathey Families claims "that at least one of
the illigitimate children of Margaret "Peggy" Bryson was fathered by a man named Cathey , probably a married man. Many Cathey males, possible candidates, show up in the
census, living in the same general area as the Brysons."
There have been several “bastardy suits” filed against a man named Cathey in Jackson County, NC. So far I have
found none filed by Margaret Bryson.

Story#3
Lawrence Wood, a descendent of Andrew Jackson Wood, and an avid family genealogist and author, who is now deceased, stated Henry was married prior to Margaret Bryson and that
Elizabeth Wood is a daughter of that marriage. I found very little on this Elizabeth. We now know that Henry was married to Agnes York prior to his marriage to Margaret Bryson and they did have a daughter named Elizabeth.. We do know Margaret was the mother of Cynthia Bryson who married Thomas Wood, a second cousin to Henry.

The above stories are the analysis of information uncovered by family researchers. The stories have no proof in fact, at this time, except that which we have already commented on.

In 1822 Henry donated the land and helped found the Cullowhee Baptist Church. In 1838,according to the church minutes Henry was "churched" (kicked out) for being caught "partaking ofthe spirits and frolic king around his house". The next month he was reinstated. She died before the 1850 census, but many of her children were listed on the 1880 census (which showed the parents places of birth, also). Some of her children listed their mother's birth place as South Carolina, while others listed North Carolina..
She was apparently home with her parents for the 1790 census (no ages given, but she was probably one of the four females with James that year. She was apparently with them still in 1800 (age 16-25, born ca 1774/84), and still with them in 1810 (age 26-44, born ca 1765/84).

Margaret had at least one daughter, possibly two, in the 1800-1810 time frame, born out of wedlock. Lawrence Wood states that one of them was reputed to be a child of a Mr. Cathey. The Buncombe or early Haywood County Court records may have data on this subject. I have not looked for it yet. Some time before ca 1812, she married Henry Wood.

Henry was a widower, his first wife was Ann York. He was born ca 1765/70 either in TN or VA. Henry can be found listed on the 1800 and 1810 census in Buncombe Co, North Carolina. For the 1820 census, Henry Wood was listed in Haywood Co, North Carolina. Unfortunately, this
census was alphabetical, so I can't tell who their neighbors were, nor where they might have been living.

SOURCES:
1820 Haywood Co, NC pg 219 Henry Woods 210001-12101
1830, they were in Macon Co, NC (created in 1828). I don't know if they lived there already or moved there in the 1820's. They were next door to Margaret's cousin Jonathan Bryson (1798).

Henry Wood died after 1850 in Haywood Co, North Carolina (now Jackson Co, NC). Margaret Bryson Wood died on 16 Jan 1847 (source?) in Haywood (now Jackson) Co, NC.

Above information taken in part from Marty and Karla Grant: http://www.martygrant.com

Margaret "Peggy" Bryson is buried in Cullowhee Baptist Church Cemetery

Children of Henry Wood and Agnes York are:
12 Henry4 Wood, Jr, born Abt. 1793.
13 John Thomas Wood, born 1804 in Wilkes County, NC; died
Abt. 1855 in Macon County, North Carolina.
14 Nelson Wood, born Abt. 1795.
15 Elizabeth Wood, born Abt. 1797. She married Michael Long.

Children of Henry Wood and Margaret Bryson are:
16 Dorcas4 Wood, born October 05, 1812 in Haywood County,
North Carolina; died May 09, 1866 in Jackson County, NC.
17 Josephine Wood, born Abt. 1814. She married John R.
Owen, Sr.; born Abt. 1801.
18 Andrew Jackson Wood, born December 06, 1816 in Scott's
Creek, Buncombe County, North Carolina; died January 01,
1908 in Tuckaseegee, Jackson County, NC.
19 Artemisia "Artie" Wood, born 1818 in Haywood County, NC
20 James Bryson Wood, born May 18, 1820 in Tennessee ?;
died September 13, 1884 in Jackson County, NC.
21 William Perry Wood, born April 1822 in Haywood County,
North Carolina; died 1910 in Jackson County, NC.William had 3 wives.
It is very helpful to know about these publications. The cemetery books and the abstract books sound very helpful. It must be a wonderful group of volunteers to help in getting these books published for use by researchers. I am going to their site to see all of their publications. Again, thank you for taking the time to tell me and other researchers about the help that is available to researchers in Jackson Co., N. C. .

You are quite welcome for the help. The Jackson County Genealogy Society has several publications that provide easy access to records of Jackson County, North Carolina, settlers. In addition to the cemetery survey, many source documents have been abstracted by a few dedicated members of that organization and have been published. We are all indebted to them. I am happy to help with a quick "look up".
Barbara

I have done quite a bit of work on my wife's Dills family and would love to correspond with you to compare information.

Where your line goes back to John Dills, son of Bartlett and Susan Henson Dills, my wife is descended from John's brother Peter according to my records and from there through another Bartlett, Bartlett J.
I don't have a copy of the Jackson County cemetery book yet, but expect to get one in the next few months.

If you are able to go to Jackson County, Cullowhee Baptish Church, which is adjacent to the cemetery, is very easy to find. Look for a large brick church with a steeple adjacent to the Western Carolina University campus. (There are signs in the parking lot warning that it's not campus parking.)

The Johns Creek valley, which is off NC107, south of the campus, has at least one Coward cemetery. I found it by accident back in 2006. I was able to talk with some of the Cowards living by the cemetery. (I don't have any Cowards,
but we all had some Queens in the background.)

I haven't been in Jackson county since 2006 but hope to make it back there this coming summer.

Elizabeth Whitaker

The Cemeteries of Jackson County, North Carolina, a publication of cemetery surveys accomplished by the Jackson County Genealogical Society, mentioned earlier in this thread is an excellent source. I have a copy and would be glad to look up specific ancestors for you. I have also done further research into relationships of those buried in Cullowhee Cemetery. The family names which you mention are not among those families with large numbers of family members buried there. However, as you probably know because of your query, there are a few gravesites with those names. I will contact you at your e-mail address. Barbara Smith

Layne, Thank you so much for this inforfmation about Nancy Sauls, b. 1834 in Alabama.
This doesn't appear to be the Nancy Sauls Slatton being discussed in this thread. According to her gravestone in Tuckasegee Baptist Cemetery in Jackson Co., NC, Nancy Sauls Slatton was born in 1811. As we know, gravestones, death certificates, census records don't always match dates exactly. However, 23 years difference seems to be a stretch for Nancy Sauls Slatton, mother of Nancy Slatton Moody and Richard Dyre Tally Slatton. Barbara

Thank you so much, Joyce! You have been a big help, atleast now I know where to search. Luther and Margie Cardin were my husband's grandparents. Their daughter is my mother-in-law and she didn't know where her father was born or who his father was. She is in a nursing home in Oregon and I am doing the research for her. She is going to be so excited. Thanks again.

Hi Suzie, I don't know if this is what you're looking for but it may be of some help. I find the following record in the copy of a book a book I have "Jackson Co. Marriages"
Groom: Campbell, Z.W. 23, bride: Wilson, Darthula, 18 - Jan 5, 1890, by B.N. Queen MG at Hamburg TS. Witnesses: A.E. Pinkard, H.A. Brown, C.L. Woodring.

Later I do see a Charles L Woodring married to a Salina A Wilson also having among others H.A. Brown as a witness. Details if desired.

Hope this helps. No other info on parents etc.
