I'm Looking up my family tree for my Aunt.I went down the lineage and much to my surprize, There be a rumor? floating around. It was posted in as I found out my one family members (Martha Long married to Starling Carmichael)Mother's name to be Rachael Jackson, although not Andrew Jackson's Wife, But what was posted was" Martha's Mother Rachael Jackson is Andrew Jackson's sister, 7th President of the USA" Posted in one of the geneology sites and all the imformation that it will give me is that it was placed there in 1978.
I went about looking into more imformation, only to find that Andrew didn't have a sister or so the records state. And so I hit a brick wall, with this link. And funny how all my other ancestor's links would open for me but not this one.
So, I am wondering if you perhaps have any imformation that would help me with this search.
Rachael Jackson was born 1752 in Lincoln, N.C. She married Israel Long (born 1754 Lincoln, N.C. )in Surry, N.C 1778, They had Martha in North Carolina in 1780. She married Starling Carmichael , Caswell co.N.C. in 1801. Thier Daughter Mathilda (Minnie)married into my grandmothers family William Minks, in Monroe co., Indiana,1832. Thier son James Newton Minks Sr.(b. 1848 Monroe co,Ind .)& wife Sarah had my G-Grand father James Minks Jr.b. 1873 . My Grandmother Sylvia MinksYeager (b. Nov.24th,1909)was his daughter.

IThe 1850 Haywood County census lists William Shelton, age 75 years, born in North Carolina. The oldest female in his household is Lydia Shelton, age 55 years, and among the sons resident in the household is a Samuel.

Jackson County was created out of Haywood County in 1852. William is not in the 1850 census but S. P. C. Shelton (Samuel) is shown as a head of household in Jackson County with a wife and several young children and a female age 60 years, born in South Caolina, named "L. Shelton". This obviously is his widowed mother, whose age is wrong in either the 1850 or 1860 census and in the 1850 census her birthplace is given as North Carolina.

Since William gve his birthplace in the 1850 census as North Carolina, I am puzzled as to how he could have been born in Hanover County, VA, in 1781?

There has been a genealogy DNA database set up for "Shelton, Chilton and Skelton" pesons who wish to determine which line they are desended from. This test is open only to males as it is a Y-chromosome test. Testers who trace their ancestry to Shelton Laurel, Buncombe County, VA, has matched the line of Ralph Shelton who died in 1733 in Middlesex County and Ralph's line is known as The Middlesex Shelton line. Several Testers who trace their descent to the Shelton family of which a son named John married Eleanor Parks have tested and this line is known as "The Rural Plains Shelton line". The Middlesex line and the Rural Plains line do not have a common ancestor. The line to which David of Caswell is held to belong is known as "The New Kent Shelton line" and does not match the Middlesex and Rural Plains lines.

About Mrs. Whitaker's book, I too have a copy of it. She says that David's son John is on the Stokes County Tax list in 1785, which does not appear to be possible because in November, 1789 both David and John resigned as Justices in Caswell County. John had been appointed as a deputy sheriff in Gaswell County in 1777 and John married in Caswell County in 1789. In 1797 David made a gift of land in TN, to John who went there with his son, John, Jr. John, Sr.,dies in TN.

IHas anyone considered that William may be a Skelton out of Mecklenburg County, VA? Mark Skelton, with a son named William, is documented to have moved from Mecklenburg County, to the District of Ninety-Six in South Carolina. Later it appears that Mark's brother named John had a land grant there. I noticed on a transcription on-line of the 1800 Union county, SC, census someone had noted that Robert Shelton in that census was the son of John Skelton of Mecklenburg County, VA.

Do you have documentation on the moves William is held to have made back and forth between North Carolina and South Carolina?
Is all of this based on Mrs. Whitaker's book? If so, I assume you are aware of the research done since she published which shows she is mistaken in much of her book?

Please note: Jackson County was formed in 1851, not 1852. Shelton Laurel is in Madison County, NC, not VA. As as active member of the Madison County, NC Genealogical Society and their webmaster and newletter editor, I see a ton of Shelton genealogy info in any given quarter. Have you checked their info?

Regarding my query as to whether or not anyone had considered that William might be a Skeleton, please take note of the fact that a descendant of William has done the genealogy DNA test with FamilyTree DNA Laboratories for the Shelton, Chilton and Skelton DNA database. The result is now available and the test matched desendants from the line of William Shelton who died in 1794 in Pittsylvania County, Virginia. His widow was Hannah (Yates) and his children were Josiah, William, John, Agnes, Susannah, Elijah, George and Elizabeth.

Though considerable research has been done on William, to my knowledge, no one has yet found where William lived before moving to Pittsylvania County -- that is, he received in May, 1763, a land grant in Halifax County, VA, in an area that would become Pittsylvania County in 1767.
