I have nothing specific about this family but have you looked at Pasquotank Co., NC records? The Nixon family has been there since the 1600's. John Nixon left his will 4 Feb 1687-1688 in the Pasquotank Precinct. It was probated 8 Aug 1692. He names Daughter Ann. His wife and exec: Em. It was witnessed by Henderson Walker, Richard Platter, Francis Tomes and Edward Mayo.

Jean
Hello again everyone. William Murray Nixon B. 1838 in Hyde County, D. 1894 Hyde County was my great-great grandfather, and I'm looking for some more information about him. His mother's name is Nancy, But I have found few details about his father. On another geneology board, i read that someone thought WMN's father was born in New York or New Jersey, although I found a Hyde County militia list from the Revolutionary War with a George Nixon (Gorge Nickson) listed. Have the Nixons always resided in hyde County, or did they come from New York? Any info is appreciated.

I have found no details about his parents or siblings, so I'm wondering if he is related to the Spencers in Virginia or New England, or if his family might have just come to settle in Hyde county from England.
Re: Wahab Family on Hatteras Island, NC

Roberta, I have cooresponded with you about this before, but I wanted to provide some public clarification for all the researchers out there. In response to the "ARAB" Origins:
My father, Thomas Wahab, is second cousin to Robert Stanley Wahab, and second cousin to his 3rd wife, Myra Wahab of Ocracoke. According my relatives, Stanley Wahab promoted the "Arab" story in 1955 to bring business and tourism to Ocracoke Island. This upset many Wahab family members. In the late 1990s my father and I visited Myra Wahab on Ocracoke(she was in her 90s at the time). Myra claimed to us that there was proof of our Arab origins. We have never found any proof.
On the contrary, only by coincidence does the current family spelling match the "English spelling of an Arabic/Muslim pronunciation". The Christian first names (James, Thomas, Job, etc.), original pronunciation, and DNA testing of the Outer Banks Wahabs all indicate Scotch-Irish Origins.
In the middle east, "Wahab" is not just Arabic, but Muslim (one of the 99 names of God). Accordingly we would expect to see Muslim first names such as Abraham, Mohommed. That is not the case as the family frequently uses "James" or "Thomas", and "Job", which is consistent with our Scottish, Christian Origin. As for pronunciation, English administrators frequently struggled to spell the gaelic or Ocracoke-brogue accents of the family. I have found the spellings "Wawhob, Worhob, Wahob" (to name a few) among the Outer Banks Wahabs. For DNA, SNP testing of the family Y Chromosome is "R1b1a2a1a1b4 R-L21", Ireland/Scotland in origin. This DNA testing is confirmed by several branches of Ocracoke Wahabs, to include Robert Stanley Wahab's decendents.
I hope this clears up some of the rumors and legends running around out there.

I'm trying to find the names of the parents of my great great grandfather, Urias O'Neale Sr. (19 Jan 1806 - 10 Mar 1848). He is buried at the A. J. Stowe Cemetery at Hatteras. He is listed in the Hyde Co. census in 1830 & 1840. He was married to Margaret "Peggy" Burrus. Their nine children were: Minerva Jane, Henry B., Ivy B., Robert B., William N., Harriet T., Margaret F. (married to Dameron Gray), Edward S. (married to Martha "Mattie" Jones) and my great grandfather, Urias (1848-1912), who was married to Marina Jane Willis Burrus . Thanks!

I was delighted to read these posts. I am a descendant of Jesse's son Benjamin Thomas. He married Sarah Hollowell and after her death married Elizabeth White. He moved to Logan County Ohio and is buried in Garwood cemetary. His son John worked his way west on the National Road. He returned to Ohio when his mother died and then joined the Beeson family's wagon train. The Beesons settled in Clinton County Illinois and John married their daughter Elizabeth in 1857. They moved to Missouri, they lived in Miller and the Moniteau counties. John spoke out against slavery and was threatened and his house burned. His wife and children moved to Jasper country Illinois and John worked as an orderly in Jefferson Barracks Hospital until the war ended. His son Benjamin Franklin Thomas was my grandfather. I have dates and documents on my website carrcentral.org
Kathy Carr Kracht
Marjorie T. Selby, who made a small non-published booklet on the black cemeteries of Hyde County in 1975, has burials for what she calls "Donald Farm or "Green Hill" which is very close to Lake Comfort. The surnames of the people who are buried there are Barber, Barrow, Bell, Benson, Blount, Brimmage, Brown, Bryant, Burrus, Carawan, Chadwick, Chapman, Chase, Clark, Collins, Cooper, Credle, Cross, Davis, Donnell, Dudley, Farrow, Fonville, Franklin, Fulford, Gibbs, Green/e, Hardy, Harget, Holloway/Hollowell, Johnson, Jennette, Jones, Keyes, Lucas, Merrick, Mackey, Mann, Miller, Moore, Morgan, Murray, McCabe, McCloud/McClaud, McCollough/McCuller, McMiller, Overton, Owens, O'Neal, Palmer, Peterson, Preston, Roper, Ready, Sadler, Sanders/Saunders, Selby, Shaw, Simpson, Slade, Smith, Spencer, Thigpen, Topping, Walker, Weston, Whitaker, White, Whitfield, Whitney, and Willis.

Apparently this is a very large cemetery and I'm sure that Mrs. Selby's book did not include all of the burials in this cemetery but if you can give me specific names I'll be glad to do a look-up for you. You can e-mail me directly at: genie12@bellsouth.net

Regards,
Kay Midgett Sheppard
Hyde Co. web hostess

Thank you for this response relating to Jesse Thomas. What you have shared with me, I'm in the process of printing out to read and research further. I had heard that Jesse had been attacked and dragged out of his home in a book on Quakers in the MD/PA area one night, and this court case is probably part of the result. Re Francis Muncey and Mary BUSH Skidmore, I need to do more research on her. The Muncey line - if I have it tracked down properly ties into the BREWSTER family lines in New England. Francis's father, John Muncey married Hannah Brewster, who was daughter of Nathaniel Brewster and Sarah Ludlow. Thank you again for your response. Our Quaker ancestors made quite a name for themselves!

Florence Fulford Moore

Hi Florence, Patrick Thomas is my 7th G-Grandfather through Jesse Thomas and his son, John. According to charts my G-Great Aunt made, Jesse Thomas and Sarah Muncey had not 7, but 9 children:

1) Mary (b 8/12/1763)
2) Anna (b 9/27/1765)
3) Fanny (b 1767)
4) David (b 4/29/1769)
5) Jesse (b 5/28/1771)
6) Nathaniel (b 9/9/1773)
7) John (my 5th G-Grandfather, b 5/31/1775, d 5/31/1837 in New Garden, Columbiana County, Ohio)
8) Sarah (b 2/8/1777)
9) Benjamin (b 8/3/1778)

And in case you don't have it, Patrick's 7 children were:

1) Jesse (b 1742, d 1804 in Smithfield, Jefferson County, Ohio)
2) Daniel
3) Benjamin
4) William or Willam
5) Moses
6) James
7) Thomas

I'm delighted in the fact that I can answer your request as to who exactly Patrick Thomas was. He was indeed of the "British Isles" and born in 1709. Family lore had always held that he was an indentured servant, and a few years ago google not only verified that legend, but gave more detail to it than I would have ever believed possible.

Read pages 440-452:

http://books.google.com/books?id=GwEQAAAAYAAJ&printsec=f...

To understand why his case, and more specifically his extradition, involved letters between colonial governors read:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cresap%27s_War

Patrick died in 1748 at the age of 39 in Kent County Delaware.

As for the Muncey line though, I don't have any information past Sarah Muncey's parents being Nathaniel Muncey (son of Frances) and Mary Bush. Do you have more information pertaining to those folks?

David LaVergne

Hi there, I am researching information pertaining to my 3rd great grandparents--Thomas Whitney born abt. 1805 and Margaret Merrit born abt. 1810, who resided in Swan Quarter, Hyde, NC. Thomas was of Portuguese descent and his ancestry came from the Azores Islands via Bermuda. I was looking for any information regarding him when he was in Hyde County, NC or when he initially came to North Carolina via New Bern. Thanks in advance for any and all help.

James Weston in Hyde County from 1840-1860. Slave names / record upon being freed?

Good afternoon:

I am looking for the names of James Weston's slaves during 1830's - 1850's in Hyde County? I believe he may have fathered a child with one of the slaves. Ibba / Ibby was a free mulatto woman in 1860 and had a son Silas in 1825. On Silas Weston's marriage record in 1869, he lists his father as James Weston. His mother was listed as Ibba / Ibby. I am trying to find the right James Weston.

The James Weston I found in Hyde County is listed on the slave schedule as having 8 slaves in 1850. I am curious if Ibba / Ibby is one of them, and wonder if Silas Weston resulted from this relationship.

Here are the documents on which I have questions:

Known: 1830 census / Hyde County. Elizabeth Weston is the only Weston listed in the county, on the census.

1840 census / Hyde County (page 86)
I believe James might be listed on page 86. He is listed as having 5 slaves and appears to be between 20-30 years of age. Is the William E. Weston listed on census page 98 his brother?

1850 Slave Schedule in Mattamuskeet, NC (page 471?)
James Weston is listed with 8 slaves. William Weston is also listed. Is this his brother? When I attempt to click on any of the census years for Free Persons of Color, I get an error message?

1850 census / Hyde County (page ?)
This census appears to have been indexed by last name. The surname Weston appears on pages 354B-358A-360B. Would it be possible for someone to look up these census pages and send them to me? I would like to see if James is listed, and if any slave names appear.

1860 census / Hyde County (James isn’t listed?)
The Weston surname is listed on pages 66a, 75b, 77a, 124b. James name does not appear in Hyde County, to my knowledge, in this census / county.
Silas was born about 1825. It appears that Silas has moved to Rutherford County, NC by 1860. His mother also appears in Rutherford County in 1860, a few houses away.
Is there any other information that would point to James leaving Hyde County, NC before this census was taken? He doesn’t appear on the 1865 tax list in Hyde County.

Because Ibba / Ibby and Silas appear to be free mulatto persons on the 1860 census, is there something that would’ve documented her being “freed” before 1860, in Hyde County?

I would really appreciate any assistance in this matter.

Thank you,
Shelly
