Hi,
I just came across your e-mail from several years ago. Have you learned anything about this swain family? I don't know if I really have any information about this family . . . but I have a William Swain in my line (b1781 and from NC) and another William Swain (son of previous William who was born in 1800 in NC). Both moved during their lifetimes from NC to Tenessee. They have a grandson/great grandson named James LaFayette Swain b1860 in McNairy, TN.

I've always been a little curious about that LaFayette name as it isn't too common.

Several genealogists have linked these William Swains to the Swains of Nantucket, through Joseph Swain & Jedidah Macy but I've never found a source to confirm this information, and have always actually questioned it.

I'm interested in learning more about your Swains.
Sincerely, Renae Curtis

I know this is kind of late, but the Harris Family cemetry is located in Macon, North Carolina. How to get to it. If you are coming from the west on hyway 158 turn right on Embro Road, go till you see a old Trailer house on the right. The cemetry is behind the trailer house, about 100 yards. The cemetry is all grown up. Raymond Harris kept it up until his death 11 years ago. If you ask the black people around they will tell you there ain't a cemetry back there.I know it is I have been there several times.

Yeah, we are related. Elias RICHARDSON (1874-1941) was the son of Wiley Burton RICHARDSON & Margianne COPELAND; Margianne was my paternal grandmother's grand-aunt, that is, her grandmother's sister. Margianne's mother was Frances HAWKINS, which is where that line comes into it.
Coincidentally, my father's name was also named Marion, it was Francis Marion WILLIAMS. I have lots of family info on the RICHARDSON & COPELAND families in my tree, feel free to look through it whenever you want. I'm planning on updating the tree in a few days, as a matter of fact.
I'm going to contact you shortly through Ancestry's Connection service and give you my email address so that you can contact me directly if you'd like.
By the way, what is your name?

Deloris
Julie,
Do you happen to have any info regarding a Hendly or Pendley Harrison, born maybe between 1780-1800 in perhaps Stokes Co., NC? I have been researching family records that list his son as John Harrison married 1831 Stokes Co NC to Catherine Cobb. Their daughter Elizabeth A. Harrison b. 1832? married John William Lawrence in TN. I have found a record of the marriage of a Headley Harrison to Sarah Sally Shelton 1803 NC, but cannot prove any connection and no other record of Headley anywhere. Their daughter Pernicie F. Lawrence was my greatgrandmother married to Dennis W. Dick of Calloway CO. KY. Thanks for any info!
Evelyn Dick Coleman

I am descended from Gideon Harrison (b.c.1765) of Halifax Co, NC through his son Henry (1799-1885) and 1st wife Nancy Dew who remained in NC (Davidson County).

Then Henry's son Reubin (1830-1903) who married Mary Louise Nance and moved to Rowan Co, NC.

Then Reubin's son Henry Loman Harrison (1859-1925) and wife Alice Gertrude Thomason.

Then Henry's son William Baxter "W.B." Harrison (1882-1941) and wife Rosa Nettie Brown.

Then W.B.'s son Abner Heath Harrison (1906-1970) and wife Bertie Hazeline Rhyne. My grandparents.

My line, except for Gideon, remained in NC.
Gideon moved from Halifax Co, NC to Davidson Co, NC about 1815, then from there to W. Tennessee and Kentucky about 1823. He's a mystery after that, and his later batch of children and wives are a bit sketchy to me. He died AFTER June 11, 1839 near Paducah, KY. Supposedly buried there near the Ohio River, opposite the mouth of White River. His grave supposedly washed away when the river flooded. Could have died in Livingston Co, KY, Gallatin Co, IL, Gibson Co, TN, etc..., which are all nearby. Help!

I am not the person that posted the original message in 1999, but that message has some incorrect lineages in it. The Samuel WILLIAMS, who he has listed as "Jr." is not the same one he is looking for. Samuel WILLIAMS, d.ca 1754 Edgecombe Co.& wife Elizabeth ALSTON, had sons, William (1720-1778 Martin Co., NC),Solomon (1723-1794 Halifax Co.,NC), Samuel (ca 1726-1791 Warren Co.,NC)and Joseph John (ca 1728-1818 Halifax Co.,NC). The problem is, there were 5 Samuel WILLIAMS living in Edgecombe at the same time, and each of them had sons named Samuel, which is where many researchers are getting the families confused. Samuel, b. 1726, did not marry and had no legitimate children, while his brothers all married and left many children with the same names.

Deloris Williams

No problem. It's just that it's a good idea when you post a message to give clear information about what it is that you need to know, including giving the names, approx. dates involved, and location. Once I saw the name of "Maggie Hawkins" who married Jesse McWilliams in one of your messages, I got an idea of what you were trying to say because she is from the same line as my HAWKINS ancestors. I am glad that you pointed out that the George Martin McWILLIAMS I have in my tree has some of the wrong family attached. I took another look at the census, birth & death records for these families and think I have figured it out, and you are correct, and he was not the one that was meant to be included in my tree as married to Priscilla LYNCH. There were actually several people with the same name and were also close in age living in the same location in Halifax, who were probably all related and that seems to be where the confusion comes from. First, I'll deal with Jesse McWILLIAMS who married Maggie HAWKINS was the son of George McWILLIAMS & Mary HARVEY. That particular George, was born abt 1859 (according to the first census found in, 1870 Halifax Co.,NC, Bucharia Twp.Pg.11, but later records changed to abt 1862) was the son of Augustus (b.1842) & Mariah McWILLIAMS of Halifax Co. Some other children of Augustus & Mariah were Henderson McWILLIAMS (b.1858), Henry McWILLIAMS (b.1854)and Orren McWILLIAMS (b.1865) all who lived nearby George in most census records; Henderson's d/c incorrectly shows his mother as Myra McWILLIAMS, but the informant was probably trying to say "Mariah". I notice that this same George McWILLIAMS, shows on his death certificate (b.1862-d. 1954) that his father was J.B. QUALLS, I have no idea why, either there was a mistake, or the informant knew something that isn't reflected in his other records.
Mary HARVEY was the d/o John & Nancy HARVEY, according to her death cert. I don't know who they were, but I have HARVEYs in my line and they are difficult to research because of all the different ways they were spelled in the census: HARVEL(L), HARWELL, HARDY, HARDIE, were often the same families in Halifax Co.
The George McWILLIAMS, who I have in my tree, was b. abt 1883 (according to 1900 census)died.Sept. 2, 1983 Durham, NC, and I have now found that he was the son of Henry McWILLIAMS, who was the son of Augustus & Mariah McWILLIAMS. This George McWILLIAMS was married to Priscilla LYNCH, d/o Mildred LYNCH of Halifax, which was the family I was researching.
If I can help you further, please feel free to contact me.

Deloris Williams

There weren't any fires but according to the State Archives, many Halifax Co. court records are missing, reason unknown. Depending on the time period you are looking for, there is a generous amount of records available for Halifax Co., although many very early marriage records are missing, and while they have marriages recorded in a Marriage book, they don't have copies of most marriage licenses until into the 1900s. What kinds of records are you looking for?

Deloris
When you say "they", whom are you referring to? Did you find a tree online with this information that you are in conflict with? If that is the case, welcome to the world of online trees. People put trees online that may or may not have the right information, and if they happen to have members of your family listed on them, it can be frustrating if the info is incorrect. What you can do, however, is to go the tree that has the info that you say is incorrect, and click onto the name of the owner of that tree, and send him a message. Tell them what the problem is in that message and ask them to contact you for further details. Ancestry has a connect service that will relay that message to the person, and it is up to the owner of the tree whether or not you get a reply. If it is a serious researcher, they will get back to you and be glad to discuss things with you. If it is someone who is just posting stuff they saw somewhere else, or who doesn't know what they are doing, then that is another story. But you should always first try getting in contact with the owner, that is the only way you can get anything going on the matter. I know how frustrating it can be to see your family posted with the wrong info, there are dozens of trees out there who have copied some of my lines and who have obviously no idea what they are doing; I usually contact them telling them they are wrong, and sometimes a serious researcher will ask for details and fix it, but others don't reply. Unfortunately, after a while it doesn't matter anymore because there are way too many people out there who are just copying anything they see not really knowing or caring whether or not they have the right family. Anyone doing real research will take the time to verify anything they find in a tree, and not just take what they see in that tree as gospel without finding out the details of how and why the info is there. Anyone not doing so should be ashamed of themselves.

Deloris Williams

Peter B. Alston

Searching for the ancestry of Peter B. Alston. Peter was born, per 1850 Federal Census in 1796 in SC. He moved to Halifax, NC, more than likely when he married Martha King - marriage bond dated July 14, 1819. Three sons were born in Halifax, Co.

Peter B. Alston, his wife, Martha King Alston, his sons, George W. Alston, another unknown son, and James Alston, all left Halifax, NC in about 1827 moving to Milledgeville, Baldwin Co. GA (per 1830 Federal Census - P. B. Alston). They lived there for about ten years, where daughters, Dalace, Sarah Emily and Missouri were born. In the late 1840's the family moved to Lumpkin, Stewart Co. GA (District 24, per 1840 Federal Census), living there for about 5-10 years. Their last son, Cicero Franklin Alston was born there. Before 1850 they are in Chambers Co. AL.

In the Union Recorder newspaper, Milledgeville, Baldwin Co., GA, Peter B. Alston's name was mentioned three times in the "List of Letters". This list mentioned any letter by name as they were addressed, remaining in the Post Office there for any particular individual.

For June 1833 there was a letter for "Peter B. Alston". For June 1836 there was a letter for "Peter Alston"; and October 1836, for "Peter Allston". Notice the two "L" spelling, as there were no Alston's in Baldwin Co. with this spelling, and Peter B. Alston was the only "Peter Alston" in the county with that name. This letter with the two "L" spelling, I conclude was addressed to my Peter B.

I am curious about the "Bacot" line of Allstons, and my Peter B. Alston's possible connection. In doing more research I have found in the "Prince Fredericks Parish of Winyaw", in SC, no mention of a Joseph Belin Allston, as a son of Peter Allston, Jr. and Mary Bacot. There are four children mentioned - Peter Allston, (b. 1770); Samuel Allston, (b. 1772); Sarah Jane Allston, (b. 1779); John Hayes Allston, (b. 1786).

Groves in his book "Allstons/Alstons,... etc." Has Joseph Allston, marrying a ? Belin, with sons, Samuel, (b. 1790)and Peter, (b. 1791). I believe Groves was incorrect here, as there is no record that I can find of ANY Joseph Allston, son of Peter, Jr. and Mary. In my opinion, the Samuel and Peter mentioned by Groves as sons of a Joseph Allston, is actually the two oldest sons of Peter, Jr. and Mary.

There is record of the decendants of the youngest child, John Hayes Allston, but so far I have not been able to find anything on Peter or Samuel, the two oldest sons.

Any information of the decendants of these two sons would be greatly appreciated. Quite possibly my Peter B. is somehow connected here, and is another Peter Bacot Allston, who changed the spelling when he moved to Halifax, NC back to the one "L" spelling, as this was prevalent there.

And also there are with Peter B. Alston's family very similar naming patterns with those in the "Bacot" Allston lineage. Please help if you can.

I am interested in the Samuel Williams who married Charity Dawson. I have accessed the The Alston book--however, I think that there were 2 marriages for John Dawson Williams. The book says that he married his cousin, Elizabeth Taylor. However, I have located a will in Bibb County, GA where he names his wife Sara/Sallie Taylor. Other legal documents also list her as his wife as she along w/numerous other families were involved in the Mason Lee dispute. There are numerous families that are inter-connected for multiple generations that span many decades and multiple states. The members of the various families kept similar migration patterns and continued to marry within the same groups of families. Would love to share information with you and am hopeful that you will email me directly. My email is: bessiems@yahoo.com
Many thanks--Trev

Willie JONES

In the Mentor Magazine of October 16, 1916, the following paragraphs, in connection with John Paul Jones occur:
"One day in the early part of the year 1775, Willie Jones, a planter of North Carolina, came into the little town of Halifax from his estate, and found a young man sitting on a bench in front of a tavern, who seemed to be in the deepest throes of melancholy.
'What is your name?' he asked him.'I have none', was the answer.'Where is your home?' he asked. "I have none", was the reply.
"He then talked with him a little further, and invited him to share his home. The dejected stranger was none other than John Paul, who latter took the name of Jones with the permission of Willie Jones; and from that time on he used the name of John Paul Jones. Latter he dropped his first nam and used simply Paul Jones on his visiting cards."
At the "Grove," it is supposed, John Paul Jones sojourned for a year or more, and was treated with the greatest courtesy. It was here that he became acquainted with Joseph Hewes, who was a delegate from North Carolina to the Continental Congress, and served on what is now called the Naval Committee. The two became immediately became intimate friends, and Hewes used his influence in having John Paul Jones commissioned in the Continental Navy as a officer. Later, by the same influence, he became Captain of the United States Gunboat Ranger.

I am trying to research my family who were slaves. According to oral history they worked land known as Arrington tract- then after slavery moved along upper fishing creek and worked the Pitt farm. Does anyone know about these farms, and have any deeds or wills. The names I am searching for Rhoda (1816) and Louis Harrison(1806) children Mary, George(1850), Benjamin(1850) and Chester (1845) years of birth are estimated.
