John Edwards and Olive Exum

Hello - I'm seeking information on my ancestor John Edwards of Halifax Co., who died in 1821, and was married to Ellen Olive Exum. Because of the whole Manhattan Island mess, it's impossible to know whether he really descends from Thomas Nathaniel Edwards, Sr. Many online sources say John is the son of Joseph Edwards and Mary Ann, and that Joseph is the son of Thomas, or the son of the son of Thomas. Yet other sources say John is the son of a William Edwards and Isabel CHALMLER (CHALMER, CHAMBER, CHAMBERS). There might be a mix-up here...William and Isabel married in October of 1747. Thomas Nathaniel's son William Harrison Edwards married an Elizabeth "Polly" CREAMER in the same year, but in August.

So...does anyone have information? Thanks.

I'm trying to determine if three people from three different records are the all same person.

Person 1)
Edmund/Edward Jackson, born Abt. 1695; died September 1762 in Halifax County, North Carolina. He married Elizabeth Scott. In the records of Pasquotank County, North Carolina, Deed Book A, and also in the wills, Edmund is referred to as both Edward and Edmund, sometimes in the same document. That I know they only had one son: Isaac Jackson, born in Halifax County, North Carolina; died 1787; married Elizabeth Cartwright ? Edmund married Elizabeth Scott, daughter of Stephen Scott and Mary M. (Mayridge ?) Scott abt 1745. However, in his will he names his wife Mary... possibly, Elizabeth's name was Mary Elizabeth, or possibly Elizabeth died and Mary was his second wife...
I have info for this Edmund/Edward down to my current line. This is a relative and the great grandfather of Solomon B. Jackson of Texas. What I don't have is from his father back.

Person 2)
Edmund/Edward (Newgate) Jackson, b.2/3/1651-52 or , d. 9/30/1727. Son of Edward Jackson and Elizabeth Newgate. He married 3 women: Grace ?, Abigain Wilson, and Mary ?
I have info for this Edmund/Edward back to 1400's (!), but don't know if this is actually a relative.

Person 3)
Edward Jackson, b. 10/1/1698 in Newton, Middlesex, Mass, USA. d. 7/1/1738 (same location). Son of Edward Jackson (1672-1748) and Mary (Thayer) Newton (1674-1753). He married a woman name Abigail in 1721.
Again, I have info for this person back, but don't know if it is an actual relative.

Any help would be appreciated. I'm looking for FACTS: Family, census or other knowledgable records. Also, if you've looked into these people and found it to be a dead end, please let me know. I'm starting to loose faith that I'll ever get this resolved.

Am looking for info on William T Herrin(g) b. 1844 who married Margaret R Powell (widow of George W. Smith and unknown Ivey and daughter of John Powell) 1832-1915.

They had 5 children: Margaret R. (m. W.F. Pearson); Roxanna; John Thomas (m. Lily C. Stamey); George Franklin (m. Linnie R. Kennedy/Cannady); and Mary Lee (m. James H. Stainback).

She also had 4 Smith children from her first marriage: Kenneth, Laura, Ellen, and another son. And a daughter by her second marriage: Willie O. Ivey.

Am descended from George F Kennedy 1874-1943 and Linnie Roseza Kennedy 1883-1982. They had 12 children:

Virginia Caroline Harrison, born 1862 (possibly in Halifax County, NC), died 1927 in Rowan County, NC. Virginia was the daughter of John H. Harrison and Mary Shaw, who were married in 1848. I believe Mary Shaw was the daughter of Elliott Shaw and that she had a sister named Jane Elizabeth, who married Stevanus (or Stephanus) Pepper.

Does anyone know about the man John THOMPSON on page 450 of the 1790 Edgecomb, Halifax NC census? He is enumerated between William CARTER and Frederick LEE. The reason for my query is that I wonder if the Frederick Lee next door is my ancestor, based on the fact that descendants of Frederick Lee are named John Thompson LEE in four generations of descendants. I believe Frederick's wife was named Susanah, or Sukey for short, seen on land records. In appreciation.

Ossie (Ausie) Hardy (1891-1946)

I am having trouble uncovering who Ossie's mother is. His death certificate lists his mother as "Lucy Williams." The 1900 Census shows him living in Halifax County in the household of Baldy and Lucy Hardy (Household 15 in Knight's Stone Precinct.) Ossie is shown living in the household of Dock and Lucy Williams in 1920 as a "brother-in-law."

Ossie's father, Baldy Hardy's death certificate does not list a father but lists the mother as Lucy Ann Lynch of Halifax County, with Ossie Hardy as the informant. I am beginning to believe Lucy Ann Lynch may have actually been the maiden name of Ossie Hardy's mother and that she is the same person as "Lucy Williams" listed in 1920. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I am looking for information on the family of William R. Bennett (b. abt. 1790 in NC) who married Jane Jones (b. abt. 1798 in NC) on 17 May 1830 in Halifax County, NC. The family moved to Madison County, MS between 1840 and 1850 and are listed in the 1850 Census of Madison County, MS. William R. Bennett is believed to have had a first wife who is the mother of at least three children John Taylor Bennett, b. abt. 1814, Griffin Bennett, b. 10 Dec 1822, and Sarah A. Bennett, b. abt. 1826. The known children of William R. and Jane are James A. Bennett, b. Aug 1833, Martha J. Bennett, b. abt. 1834, and Thomas Bennett, b. abt. 1836. All the children from both wives were born in North Carolina. William R. Bennett and family are believed to be in the 1840 Census for District 8, Martin County, NC and in the 1830 Census for Hamilton, Martin County, NC. Any help would be appreciated.

My MacDonald ancestors came to Halifax aboard the Sphinx in the year of the founding of Halifax. I think the name was Edmund MacDonald and he was on ostler, looking after the horses. He opened a livery stable in Halifax and his descendants lived in Halifax for many years. In later years one of the MacDonalds owned the Globe Hotel in Halifax. If anyone can help with more information it would be gretly appreciated.

Anyone run up on the Green Mabry family of Halifax Co.? Am trying to determine the parentage of John Mabry circa 1830. He indicated in an answer on a census that he was born in Halifax Co. There was only one Mabry family in Halifax at the time and it was Green Mabry. John is also listed as mulatto and the Green Mabry family were slave owners. Suspect he may have been born between the union of Green or one of his sons and a slave. Can not find him anywhere on the 1850 census. He first shows up in an 1851 Warren Co. marriage record with Martha Cooley (Cowley), also a mulatto.

Any information you can provide on this family is greatly appreciated.

Looking for information on DAVID WARD from Fishing Creek/Gum Swamp area of Halifax County over years 1745-1785. This clan of WARDs owned land which adjoined lands of READE, WEST, MURDEN, WYATT, SPIVEY, et al. David WARD, Sr., was a son of JOHN WARD of old Tyrrell. He patented land in 1745, received a Granville grant in 1756, and sold or gave land to three sons-- John, Robert, and James. DAVID WARD, Jr., possibly another son of DAVID, SR., owned land adjoining JESSE WYATT, JAMES WARD, and ARTHUR WEST on Gum Swamp and built a bridge over Fishing Creek at Wyatt's landing. I'm looking for any researchers out there of these particular WARDs.

I am tracing my North Carolina ancestors and have gotten stuck and have been unable to obtain the parents of Sherrod (or Sherod) BARKSDALE. Sherrod, as an adult, lived in Cumberland County (according to the 1800, 1810 and 1820 census). However, the 1790 Census only shows BARKSDALE's in Halifax County, North Carolina, no where else in the state. Included are William, Daniel and John BARKSDALE. As far as I can tell, none of them had another male living with them, but it seems likely that they are closely related to Sherrod. Does anyone know of the BARKSDALE's of Halifax County and whether Sherrod is a relative of William, Daniel or John. The 1800 Census shows 3 BARKSDALE's living in Halifax County, Daniel, Benjamin and Creasy (Cary?). No Barksdale's are shown living in Halifax County in the 1820-1860 census.

Searching for the gravesite of Alexander M. Hamill (1836--bef 1886?), son of Nelson Hamill and Elizabeth Shearin, who married Martha S. Pittman (1844--after 1886?), daughter of John Eaton Pittman and Sarah Frances Snow. Alexander and family’s last known location was “Enfield Township West RR” in the 1880 census, and I suspect he may be buried in one of the two Pittman cemeteries near Enfield. I have an unconfirmed record that Martha Pittman Hamill married Richard H. Neville in 1886, so Alexander may have died before 1886. I have the cemetery locations from epodunk.com, but I would be grateful for any other information about these cemeteries, and/or any specific information about Alexander or Martha Pittman Hamill.

Sidney Laurence WHITE was the son of (according to his death certificate) Randall WHITE and Alice PERKINS. I have
searched for years without any luck to find any information about this Randall WHITE, and would really value any information.
Randall WHITE may have been David Randall WHITE or Randall David WHITE. Family lore states that Randall WHITE's
family was from the Norfolk Virginia area, not too far from Weldon NC where son Sidney WHITE was born in 1872. Alice
PERKINS I believe to be from Gaston Co NC, perhaps connected to "Gentleman John" Perkins?.

Randall WHITE and Alice PERKINS WHITE had at least one more son, Eugene WHITE, who survived his brother Sidney
Laurence WHITE when he died in 1935. Eugene WHITE was then living in Portsmouth VA.
