Depends. The British burned the Guilford court records for the first ten years (1771-1781) at the time of the Guilford Courthouse battle. And the Yankees were in Greensboro for a while during the Civil War. Orange County courthouse also went through some rough use and abuse during the Revolutionary War and the Civil War. You can start with the local courthouses, but you should also check the NC Archives. And whatever pension applications, war records, etc., you can find through the DAR, National Archives, etc. There are people who know more about military research than I do.
