The Henson Family
Lloyd And Millie Henson
We are not sure just when the ancestors of Lloyd Henson came to
America from Ireland. Records show it was prior or during the early
1700’s. No records have been found but we believe they came from the
South Carolina area to settle in Buncombe County, N.C. on the old
Sutton Place. Lloyd was born on June 23, 1825 in N.C. The name of his
father is unknown, but may have been the Lloyd Henson who was in
Haywood County in 1830.
In 1853, Lloyd married Millie Harkins,
daughter of William (Billy) and Nancy
Harkins. Nancy Harkins was born in 1775
in South Carolina. The Harkins had come
to Buncombe County from South Carolina
and settled on Boot River. The Harkins
had also emigrated from Ireland. Millie
was born April 19, 1832 in Buncombe
County.
When Lloyd’s interest in 13 year old
Millie became more than a friendly
acquaintance, the Harkins family became
upset. To discourage and put a halt to
this romance, the Harkins loaded their
daughter and their belongings into a
covered wagon and rolled out of Buncombe
County. One night while the family was
camped along the roadside, Lloyd, who had
followed the fleeing party, crept into
their camp and kidnapped young Millie.
The late Carl Henson told the following
story of Millie’s abduction.
“While the family was camped one night, and after they had all bedded
down to sleep, great grandpa sneaked into their camp. He found where
great grandma was sleeping. He picked up a little straw, or stick, or
something, and tickled her on the bottom of her feet with it. This
woke her up. She saw who it was, and got up, and they slipped quietly
out of camp. They climbed on horseback and galloped off. They came to
Turniptown.”
When Lloyd and Millie came to Turniptown around 1853, they first
stopped across the creek, either on, or near, the place John J.
Lanning had stopped when he came to the Road in 1847. Lloyd and Millie
stayed here only a short while until they built a house nearer the
Road. The house they built was almost in the center of what was once a
large Indian Village. Charcoal from old camp fires, and many stone
artifacts the Indians had left behind, was in evidence.
101
There was an Indian family who had refused to leave the mountains
during removal that were living nearby alongside the creek. In later
years the children of these two families played together, and Lloyd
and Millie’s children learned to speak some of the Cherokee language.
[Note: Lloyd and Millie are not in the 1850 census for Gilmer, nor,
Buncombe Co. N.C. In the 1930’s, the house they later built on
Turniptown, was the home of “Little” Lloyd Henson. The original
portions of the house have been remodeled, but remain basically the
same as when it was first built. The Morrow family owns the house and
property today. It is still called the Old Henson Place by some of the
older people.]
For several years an Indian man lived in the home of Lloyd and Millie.
This man’s name was Steve. He called Millie, “Sis”. He lived with them
for a long time. One morning he went into the kitchen where Millie was
preparing breakfast. He asked her to cook him a “pone” of cornbread.
He told her, “I’m going to need it before I get to where I’m going.”
Millie baked the bread for him, and he left. They never saw him again.
When the Civil War erupted in 1861, Lloyd went to Tennessee and
volunteered. Millie was left with five small children. Mary Anne, the
oldest, was nine and Sarah Melissa was not quite a year old. Fear was
not one of Millie’s weaknesses, and she survived the war years, even
in the face of hardship and personal tragedy.
Hendersons in WNC

Hi,

I'm looking for Henry Henderson, born in NC or SC around 1784, lived in Greenville, SC in 1830 and Haywood County, NC until after 1860. His wife was Susan, born about the same time. His son, Thomas, married Elizabeth Cook in 1843.

I think Henry may be Archibald Henry Henderson. His information matches up pretty well with my Henry Henderson, including the names of some of his children.

Oddly enough, there seem to have been multiple Archibald Hendersons in the WNC mountains around that time. One lived in Cullowhee, NC. The other lived in Haywood County, NC. I don't know if they are related. I just want to make sure I'm tracing the right line (there were a LOT of Henry Hendersons in the area at that time it turns out). Any information would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks, Stephanie

It is possible. My William Balis Adams was born 11 Apr 1880 or 1881, and married Josephine (also known as Josey) Waldroup in Graham Co, NC. on 29 May 1904. He died on 22 Jun 1957 in Gaston Co, NC. I am not sure where William Balis Adams was born. A 1920 census, conducted during the family's residence in Spartanburg Co, SC, lists Sarah as his mother, and estimates her birth year as being around 1852.

At present her maiden name I can not remember will look it up if you desire. Some time ago I did get in contact with one of your close relations that now lives in Florida and is an attorney. She did not know if you were still living but I do hope that this finds you well. From what I have been able to find about you was very encouragein. You are a professinal genealogist and and a member of the colledge there in Danville. If my mind is correct I do believe that your grand father was a dairy farmer there in Virginia.Hopeing to hear from you a distant cousin Kenneth White email kwhite3535@yahoo.com

One of Amanda's children married Miley Crisp who was the mother of John Jefferson Dean, the father of Harley Dean the father of Edna Dean who is my mother. I hope this helps a little bit. This course also has value to other researchers. Historians, demographers, and sociologists studying people in the past will find that this course will provide important guidance in assessing which records will provide the facts needed. Part 2 of this popular advanced genealogy course will cover in-depth records and their uses. This course will look at vital records; census; probate and basic legal terminology; land records; court, church; and military records; and many more.

Prerequisite: Beginning/Intermediate Genealogy Course
6:30 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. Tuesday Nights (13 weeks)
August 21 - November 13, 2012

Planting Your Family Tree Online - Genealogy Technology Course
When you decided to work on your family history, you undoubtedly learned about places you should go (libraries, archives, courthouses, cemeteries, etc.) and tools you should use (libraries, catalogs, microfilm, etc.). As genealogists, we should seek out new resources and adopt new tools that may prove valuable in our research. This course will accomplish that by introducing you to new technology "places" and tools that you can use in your genealogy research. Social networking; blogs; wikis; photo and video sharing; genealogy software: free, paid and on the web; and online trees are just a few of the topics to be covered in this new technology related course.

Prerequisite: This course is open to all, but a basic understanding of genealogy principles and computer technology is strongly recommended.
6:30 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. Wednesday (10 weeks)
September 5 - November 7, 2012

Who Do You Think You Are? - Beginning/Intermediate Genealogy Course
NBC's TV program Who Do You Think You Are? sparked a lot of interest in genealogy research. If you would like to learn how to do your own family research then this course is for you. Some of the course material includes the usage of a variety of record sources in the pursuit of ancestor hunting. Sources such as vital records, census, church records, court, military, land property, and tax records will be discussed in detail. Genealogy basics as well as advanced topics such as DNA testing will be included as part of this course. This course is a requirement to take any of the advanced genealogy courses offered at TCCC.

6:30 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. Thursday (14 weeks)
August 16 - November 15, 2012

You can sign up for any of these genealogy courses by contacting Lisa Long, the director of community outreach at TCCC via phone 828-837-6810. Your instructor this Fall will be syndicated genealogy columnists Larry Van Horn. You can check out his bio on his genealogy blog at http://family-genealogy.blogspot.com/2012/05/fall-2012-genea....
Hi Pauline, this is a very old post of yours. I would very much like to get in touch with you. I am a descendant of Wilma Emaline Rhodes and also have heard she was Cherokee, and I have 2 pictures of someone I firmly believe is her, and she clearly looks Cherokee. But there is no documentation to support this other than something I saw a long time ago in an Odom anthology. If I hadn't seen these photos (and now your posting about Wilma's sister, which seems too coincidental....) I really would be more than willing to let the idea go b/c frankly it's very difficult to prove! There's just that little ounce of doubt that won't let me let it go though...

If you do see this I'd really love to get in touch. Thank you, Michelle Odom (PInkney/Wilma's ggrandaguther)

Just thought to share;

Mary Phillips b. 1893 White Female Married age 22 School Teacher was "Pistol shot through the heart by Ed Williams" on 1 May 1915 Father: Phil Phillips Mother: Nancy Campbell.

Nancy Phillips age 66 b. 1849 died 2 May 1915 "Shot with a pistol by her son-in-law Ed Williams

Charley Phillips white single male age 24 b. 1891 died 2 May 1915. "Ed Williams shot him through the heart. Father: Phil Phillips Mother: Nancy Campbell.

These murders occurred in Cheoah.

I searched for a death certificate for Ed Williams thinking it may have been a murder suicide but found nothing.
