Interesting that you ended up in Logan, Kentucky. Averis’ mother was Obediance Gibbs and at least two of her siblings lived in Logan, Kentucky in the early 1800's. Obediance's oldest sister Susannah "Sucky" Gibbs married a Henry Dillon and moved there by 1810. A younger brother James Gibbs was a witness on Henry Dillon's will in 1844. And the youngest brother Wiley Welcher Gibbs at least passed through Logan KY around 1850 where his wife and kids were listed there on their way to Missouri. A large portion of remainder of the Gibbs clan went to Wayne, Missouri.

My Grandma Susan Nicholson Ledford said that (Ulysses) Eugene Garland Ledford (4-May-1884)'s grandfather was adopted when his parents died. Thomas C.
Averis Gryder is my 2nd great grandfather. My paternal grandmother was Bessie Jane Gryder Watson(b 18 Aug 1882 d 25 Sep 1969), the daughter of Frederick Winfield Gryder (b 15 Jul 1852 in NC, d 22 Sep 1944 in SC). She married Rev. Earl Stacy Watson Sr. in 1916. He was a Presbyterian minister and they eventually ended up in Logan County, Kentucky about 1930. They had four living children, Elizabeth Watson Lapis who migrated to New York during WW II; Earl Stacy Watson Jr, my father, who was a farmer in Logan Co, KY; William Gryder Watson, who was a school teacher in Kentucky, and another son still living. I am interested in knowing more about your branch of the family that, I believe, starts with Averis' son James. Looking forward to hearing from you.

Trying to locate the Arney Plantation in Lincoln County North Carolina

I have been trying to track down, the "Arney Plantation", in Lincoln County, North Carolina, to little avail, so far.

The few records, I have found, only show Jacob Arney, purchasing 200 acres on the South Fork of the Catawba River, in 1772.

While Christian "Christy" Arney, Sr. purchased several lots in Lincolnton, which leads me to believe that the "Arney Plantation" must have been near Lincolnton.

I still believe that both Jacob & Christian, Sr. were buried on the Arney Plantation.

Unfortunately, I don't know, in what direction the Arney Plantation was from Lincolnton.
If it was North or South, it could have been placed in a different County (Catawba/Gaston).
On the other hand, if it was East of Lincolnton, it could still have been in Lincoln County.

I do know, that there is an Arney street, that is East of Lincolnton, while still being in Lincolnton, called "Boger City". If the street was named after the Arney family, it's possible that the plantation was near there or could have been named after the lots that Christian, Sr. had purchased.

I "assume", that Christian, Sr. received the Arney Plantation, after his father's (Jacob) death.

I know that Christian, Sr., left his son, Christian, Jr., a choice of the Arney Plantation or lots in Lincolnton, from what I understand he took both.

I know that Christian, Jr., left his Widow & minor children, the plantation and lots in Lincolnton. After Christian, Jr.'s death, his Widow got to keep the plantation, but there was a lengthy, Court battle, in which his children's appointed guardian, was forced to make the children sell off several lots in Lincolnton, to pay their father's debts.

Matthew Wilson, son-in-law (husband of Julianna "Uly" Arney) of Christian, Sr. attempted to force Christian, Jr. to give him the Arney Plantation, due to debts owed, but failed.

Who received the Arney Plantation, after the death of Christian, Jr.'s Widow, I don't know?

You, as well as my uncle (who has spent countless years studying our family lineage)-- Thomas Broadfield Ray-- state that Charles Broadfield 1749-1812 was born in Bridgnorth, England. Though there were many Broadfield's in that area at that time I have yet to find any documentation proving that Charles Broadfield came from Bridgnorth. In fact, there were Broadfield's in other towns around there at that time as well. Do you have any proof that you can provide me?
Margaret Elizabeth Williamson Barker is my 2nd great grandmother through Harriet Florence Barker Settlemyer. I am rather new to genealogy but have read your articles in the Union and Old Meckenburg Heritage books. Anything you can send me on William Williamson, Molly Terrell, John Williamson, or Susannah Lowe would be appreciated enormously. In fact, anything anyone who is reading this board has on the Williamson, Barkers, etc, would be appreciated. I'd love to visit the graves if you know where they are.

Coming thru what appeared to be the main entrance (with a gate), close to Church, they were buried past the first circle right before you enter second circle on the right off the road before going down the slope. Do you also have Infant Daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Ben Fisher, Born and Died on Aug 10, 1915? The reason that I ask is that this triangular stone has fallen over face down and we reset it.

It shows the outside of the building with a bunch of folks standing in front of it. I would love to have any information you have on this church as well.
I'm trying to identify the persons in this photo. It's of a Hovis reunion that was held 23 Feb 1907 (date written by my grandmother on back of photo)in I believe Lincoln Co, NC. I've identified my grandfather, Marcus Benjamin Hovis Sr. and his father Marcus Luther Hovis. I believe the man seated on the front row third from right is Marcus' father Moses S. Hovis. The copy I have is a copy with the stamp of Clyde C. Cornwell on the back. Any help would be greatly appreciated!…

Hello,
I'm hoping some kind soul could look up any information in the newspaper concerning the 1943 murder of Myrtle Hurst Scates. She was attacked on a highway sometime between June 27-28th 1943 and lingered in the hosptial until her death on 6 Jul 1943.
Myrtle was married to Robert Scates. She was buried on 7 Jul 1943 in Hollywood Cemetery in Gastonia, Gaston Co., NC. I've tried Ancestry and GenealogyBank, but I can't find anything on her death other than what is on her death certificate.
Thank you for any help in advance.
Regards,
Barb Selletti

Hopefully someone can help clear this up for me even though this is an old thread. Mary and David supposedly had Joshua and Hettie Costner but both were born before their marriage. The North Carolina marriage bond has Mary Costner marrying David McIlwain in 1816. Joshua Costner married a Sarah Brown abt 1828. I know the info comes from the book "Our Kin" but the different last names and dates don't make sense. Can anyone help clarify that?

This doesn't directly affect my line but would like to be as accurate as possible and the dates don't add up. I am the grandson of Terry E McElwain from Tippah MS. His father was John C (m. Slina Pearl) through Joseph (m. Martha Jackson), to Caleb son of David McElwain and Mary Costner.

Thanks for any help
Chris
