Mrs. Maggie Steele McCorkle of 3130 Woodfin Place, the daughter of the late Henry and Ethel Steele McDowell, was born Aug. 22, 1910, in Winston-Salem. She departed this life Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2004.
Mrs. McCorkle attended the public schools of the city. She was a faithful member for more than 50 years of Shiloh Baptist Church, where she actively participated in the following: past president of the Senior Choir, Sunday school teacher of the Young People's Department, past president of the Ladies' Aid, treasurer of Cornetta Hawkins Auxiliary, leader of Women's Day, first chairman of Missionary Group 5, and a member of the Deaconess Board and Sheepfold Ministry 10. She was also a member of the Carver Senior Citizens, Les Bonne Filles, Atlantic Social Club and Woodfin Place Community Club. Mrs. McCorkle was a 42-year service retiree of R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Nick Louie McCorkle, on Feb. 1, 1995, after 63 years of marriage. She leaves to cherish loving memories two daughters, Janie M. Degraffenreidt of Warren, Ohio, and Rose Denise Hairston of Greensboro; five grandchildren, Dawn DeGraffenreidt and James DeGraffenreidt Jr. of Warren, Ohio, and Germaine Hairston, Nathan Hairston and Shanta Hairston, all of Greensboro; three great-grandchildren; two devoted friends and caregivers, Mrs. Dorothy S. Johnson and Mrs. Doris K. Sims; and a host of cousins, other relatives and loving friends.
The funeral service will be held at noon Saturday, Feb. 21 at Shiloh Baptist Church with the Rev. Paul A. Lowe Jr., pastor, officiating. The family will meet friends from 11:30 a.m. until the funeral hour at the church. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery. The family may be contacted at the home of Mrs. Dorothy S.
