Hi, Joyce. Good to hear from you again and thanks for the update.
This Temperance does look as though she could be Temperance Lane. DOB, location, and child's name all look like a possible fit.
FWIW, I have seen some circumstantial information that looks like Henry Lane and Cordy Lane were related but, once again, no positive link.

Hello again, I stumbled across this response from you just today.
I looked and as you could not find anything linking Henry with parents,
Temperence got my attention,
Possibility of Temperance/Tempie found
in 1860 Martin NC
J.L. Harridson 23 1837
Temperence Harridson 23 1837
Martha 4
Jane 2

The only reason I am honing in on this Temperence is the close proximity of Martin and Edgecombe counties
also yes, there is a 2 yr discrepancy of dob for her
also,,, she has a daughter named Martha.
possibly her mother's namesake?
I am fishing... could possibly be wrong all the way around, but am passing along,

I am possibly stirring the pot, hope not, possibly am trying to make pieces of the puzzle fit.

I hope not.

I checked what I could on the Lanes/Weeks/Adkins etc... not finding anything more than what you have found.

Joyce

Mrs. Williams, Thank you for your response and help with Edgecombe County. It appears and I am even more so beleiving that John Stone and Ann Stone were my 5th. great grandparents. I had been trying to determine if John Stone was related to the Stone line that produced Governor David Stone of North Carolina. This particular line was of Bertie County, NC.,. I could not find a connecting source that would confirm my thoughts. Based on the date of John and Ann Stone appearing in court as witnesses to a deed transaction it appears that the time line would be right as for them to be my lineage. It appears that "Ann" was the named used for "Alicia Hurst" who borne their first child in 1753 or in 1755. By 1757 John Stone was married to John Merritt's daughter, Pegee Merritt, of Edgecombe County. This is based on the will's of both John Merritt of January 1757 and Anne "Alicia's" brothers will as to the way it was written in 1769 in Halifax County., NC.,... Thanks again!
Having established the situation with Edgecombe Co., here are a couple of entries from the book I mentioned "Abstracts of Deeds, Edgecombe Precinct, Edgecombe County, North Carolina 1732-1758".
Deed Book 1-
Pg. 73
JOHN NAIRNE of Edge. NAIRN the whold joining DANIEL MCDANIEL, a marsh, ROBERT SURJOYNER, WILLIAM SURJOYNER, JAMES ALLEN, Great marsh, WILLIAM BELL, the beaverdam, HAMILTON and the river all houses, cornfields, clear ground etc. Wit: JOHN STONE, JOHN HUBBARD Reg. Edge Prect. Aug. Ct 1737 T. Kearney D.C.

Prior to the formation of Edgecombe COUNTY in 1741, it was known as Edgecombe PRECINCT starting from 1732. Edgecombe Precinct was formed in 1732 from Bertie County. According to the book "Abstracts of Deeds, Edgecombe Precinct, Edgecombe County, North Carolina 1732-1758", by Margaret Hofmann, "Records indicate that Edgecombe court of the early 1730s was probably held from place to place at plantations within Edgecombe. In the late 1730s and early 1740s, there seems to have been a courthouse of sorts near what is now Tillery, NC. By about the mid 1740s, the Edgecombe County courthouse at Enfield, NC was in use. Early in 1759, when Halifax County, North Carolina was formed from a part of Edgecombe County and the limit of Halifax County was set, one boundary was and still is Fishing Creek which flows just below Enfield. The Edgecombe Courthouse was then within the new County of Halifax. For this reason deeds in the Halifax County, NC public registry prior to 1759 call for lands within the huge area that Edgecombe covered in its very early days."

The first 6 Edgecombe Co. Deed Books, by the way, are actually the ones that cover Halifax County. Note, too, that wills were filed in the early courts, which is why this is important.

Deloris Williams

No idea, but I have the same book as you have with the dates of wills 1733-1856. yes Edgecombe did not become a county within itself until 1741. There is somewhat of an explanation on page xi...."Although Edcombe county did not enjoy a truly independent organization until Northhamption County was severed from Bertie County in 1741, it had been established as an effective precinct, to all pratical purposes on may 16, 1732. and had been named for Sir Richard Edgcombe, later Baron Edgecombe who was Lord of the British Treasury at that time. The Edgecombe County wills actually began with one in the year 1733 and were probated by the clerk of the Bertie County Court prior to 1741, but after that date Edgecombe County had its own Clerk and Court.

no, I have not broken any walls. My husband had been sick for 3 years from strokes and I took care of him at home. He went to Heaven in Dec and things have been difficult for the past year but especially now. Could always use help. Louisa or Louiza Harrell, as her grandson called her, married David Dunn, son of Viletta Dunn. That is a brick wall. I can not find out anything about Viletta, but thinking maybe she was not married. Where was she before 1860 census? Also a Mack Davis had a daughter named Dora, think his wife may have been Lucy, but really don't know. Help with him would be good also. Hope to get to Edgecombe records as soon as I finish all the Estate matters and they take time. Thanks for remembering me. Linda

Sherri,
I checked and could not find either a Joe, Joseph or Gertrude in Greenwood Cemetery index.
Did look at Ancestry and found a Joe Savage born 1877 in 1880 census under grandmother Susan Savage with parents Amausa Savage and wife Virginia. Then found a death certificate in 1927 for same Joe Savage, widower, son of Amausa and Helen V. Burnette (probably Virginia) that indicates he was buried by Bullock Funeral Home of Rocky Mount but was buried in Tarboro but they don't name the cemetery. He is not in any of our current cemetery surveys, but will keep looking if this is your ancestor.

Sherri,
The Savage in the old Cobb cemetery was Mary Pearl Savage daughter of William and Mary Savage.
I searched our recent cemetery surveys and found a Joseph E Savage born April 8, 1871 died Aug. 2, 1931. He is buried in the Grace Episcopal Cemetery in the community of Lawrence. There are several other Savages in that cemetery, but no Gertrude.
My copy of the Greenwood cemetery is at the office. I will check that this week and see if he is there.

The only other Joseph Savage I can find is Joseph L. Savage Mar 14 1841 and died March 9 1914 and he is in the Primitive Baptist Cemetery in Tarboro. I'll keep looking. We are still locating and surveying cemeteries around the county.

Is there any chance you could tell me which Savage is buried there?

I am looking for a Joseph Savage b.approx 1877 in NC unsure of death info (date/place). I do know that his wife was Gertrude Pattie b.1883 VA d.1911 Edgecombe, NC.-she is buried in NC @ Greenwood Cem.. They had 4 kids, 1 named Joseph Savage b.approx 1906 in NC d.unknown. Any info greatly appreciated.

Sherri Savage
Re: John Watson and Catherine Long married 12-21-1850 Edgecombe County

I looked into the 1880 Nash NC census.
From this, I found John's appx. dob being 1822
Looking at the children's name, this helped in possibly,, most probability of a lead.
The oldest daughter, Margaret gives her dob as 1854 in the 1880 census, being 26 yrs old.
It led me to a NC death record for a
MAGGIE CHANCE borne july 11, 1850, dod Jan 1938
I know there is a four year difference, but what caught my eye were her parents names and place of birth.
Maggie Chance was married to Charlie Chance. She was 87 yrs old.On the record, parents names listed were
John Watson of Halifax NC and Katie Long of Edgecombe.
From this, I looked into the Halifax census, finding possibilities of John's father. Of course, the very early census offered little on family members names, only markings of amount in age group.
I found two census in Halifax 1830 and 1840

In the 1840 census there is actually a John Watson household. In this family, the head of the household shows age of 20-29, one male, prob. his father, in the age of 50-59 What is not "adding up" unless Catherine was a second wife, is a woman in the age group of 20-29 and one male child under the age of 5.

In the 1830 Halifax NC census there are two WATSON households
One Thomas Watson in the 20-29 year range with one son in the 5-9 range
The other family cannot be your John's father, named
William W. Watson also of Halifax also in the 20-29 year, range with a son under the age of 5.

So as of now, I would say Thomas Watson is the highest probability of this being John's father.

I hope this is some help to you/

joyce

Thank you so much for the information! I don't think this is my Lemuel, but he has to be related, doesn't he? The same name from the same county... This guy may be my Lemuel's grandfather... Maybe if I research Josiah & James, I might find that one of them is his dad!

Thanks so much for giving me a new path to research!!!

Hello Bren:

I don't have much more infomation personally, but I know of 2 other Bulluck researchers working on this family who I think can help you. Please send me a private message with you contact information and we can exchange notes. Also have you obtained a copy of the book "Edgecombe County Heritage North Carolina 1735-2009" as it contains an extensive write up about our line of Bullucks which can be carried back to 1578, Essex England.
