Hi Debbie. I just read your post. I am a great granddaughter of Joe Styons, brother of Charlie Cecil Styons. I saw that you had the names of Charlie and Minnie Virginia Hardison Styons' children and some of the grandchildren. I would appreciate having the names you have of the family so that my children know of their families. Thank you.

One thing that might interest you is that the Midgette's of Cape Hatteres we responcible for helping found the US Coast Guard
There was a big artical in the National Geographic about there roll and their still existance in the Coast Guard. My mother Viola Lane Midgette was born in Cape Hatteres and had a sister named Roma Midgette. I will have to dig through the family chest and see what else I can find. This was just from memory. Hope this might help a little.

Looking at the 1810 nc census, there are two possibilities for uria's father There are no neal/oneal listed in dare but in hyde co there are two possibilities.. In the under 10 column, there is one Christ Oneal which could be your Uria Oneal. The other possibility could be one John Oneal, or one William Neal, both with a son under 10. There is no way of knowing exactly which is the father at this time, since there is no follow up with the 1810 records.

He is listed in the Hyde Co. census in 1830 & 1840. He was married to Margaret "Peggy" Burrus. Their nine children were: Minerva Jane, Henry B., Ivy B., Robert B., William N., Harriet T., Margaret F. (married to Dameron Gray), Edward S. (married to Martha "Mattie" Jones) and my great grandfather, Urias (1848-1912), who was married to Marina Jane Willis Burrus . Thanks!

Some time ago I received a bastardy bond from one of my correspondents (whose maternal grandmother was a Twiford) regarding Holland Twiford & D. H. [Dean Harrison] Hassell. She found it in her grandmother's effects after she died. The wording of the bond is seen below.

Source: Dare Co., NC Bastardy Bond

Whereas an agreement has been entered into between D.H. Hassell and Holland Twiford on this 30th day of August 1911 and the conditions of said agreement is as:
Witnesseth: Holland Twiford demands that D.H. Hassell shall pay her the sum of one hundred dollars for the maintenance of a child that she soon will bear, and she asks this amount to be paid by D.H. Hassell who she accuses as being the father of the child by her, and that if he will pay the one hundred dollars asked for that she will in no way whatever swear, or prosecute the said D.H. Hassell, and that she is fully satisfied, and that no claim will be demanded in no way hereafter.
Witnesseth: D.H. Hassell agrees to pay over to Holland Twiford the sum asked for with the understanding that he is not to be in any manner whatever implicated or indicted by her, and that it is understood that she shall not swear any warrant whatever; and it is now jointly understood before the persons of the undersigned Justice of the Peace, and the witnesses hereto with names subscribed that the one hundred dollars now paid in hand shall be full satisfaction for all demands.
Holland Twiford
D.H. (x) Hassell
Witness agreement:
T.D. Everton
Gold? Twiford

Since Allene Twiford was born in Oct. 1911 and this August 1911 bastardy bond says that Holland will soon deliver a child, I'd be willing to bet that Allene was that unborn child whose father was listed on the bond as D.H. Hassell.

From the records I have, Dean H. Hassell (Mar. 1, 1877-Apr. 4, 1950) never married Holland but he did marry Martha A.W. Smith in East Lake on Sept. 7, 1902 and they had 3 children so far as I know. He then married Lula Ida Twiford in East Lake on Dec. 29, 1912. Lula was the maternal grandmother of the lady that sent me this bond.

In 1930 D.H. Hassell and his wife lived 2 houses from John & "Aline" Smith.

I have an "Aurora" Holland Twiford in my database who was born Sept. 27, 1890 & died Nov. 1970 but I have no marriage for her. She was the d/o Wm. Jefferson Twiford & Affie Caroline Basnight.

If you wish to contact me privately my e-mail addresses are: kaymidgettsheppard@gmail.com or genie12@bellsouthsouth.net.

Regards,
Kay M.
Looking for John Smith and Allene Twiford Smith Genealogy

I am looking for information on John William Smith (14 Jan 1910 - 21 Nov 1974) and his wife, Allene Elnora Twiford Smith (22 Oct 1911 - 9 Feb 2001). Both died in Portsmouth, VA and are buried in New Hollywood Cemetery, Elizabeth City, Pasquotank, NC. Allene's name has been misspelled at least 7 times in the Census and on Ancestry.com (Alice, Aline, Alise are several examples).

I believe they were born in the East Lake, Dare, NC area. In the 1930 Census, they were listed in East Lake with my Dad, Fredrick (misspelled Frederick) Smith. He was their only child. I am not sure when they moved to Portsmouth, but it was after the 1930 Census. I'm waiting for VA and NC 1940 census records to be indexed.

Allene's mother was Holland Twiford, possibly daughter of William J (1860 - 1934) and "Affie" Basnight (1857 - 1935). Allene's father was supposed to be Native American, which would explain the problem with finding any information on him.

I have not been able to find any information on John Smith's family or parents. I believe he had siblings. Horace and Minnie are two names I remember from my childhood. In 1974, on the way back from John's funeral, we stayed briefly in Nags Head/Kitty Hawk area and visited with some of his siblings and their children.

It's possible that John lived in Elizabeth City in the 1920 Census. I did find records for John W. Smith, parents Theodore and Mattie Smith, siblings: Horace P, Evelyn E., and Gretchen L. Smith. I don't know if this is the John Smith I'm looking for.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

I am just seeing your post about the Styons family. I believe you are talking about my grandfather Charlie Cecil Styons. I know he had a brother named Jo. I did not know his mother's name. I did not know his father drowned or that he lived in Buxton. He was from Martin County North carolina. Charlie married Minnie Virginia Hardison. My grandmother Minnie lived with us for the latter part of her life. She had glaucoma andbecame completely blind in one eye before she ever went to a Dr. By then it was too late and nothing could save her eyesight in the other eye. Unfortunately I don't remember much about Charlie Styons as he passed away when I was about 6 years old. (I am now 56)I can give you the names of their children and some of their grand children. Which were many in numbers. I think something like 35 grandchildren, 40+great granchildren and on and on. If you are still interested in finding out about the Charlie and Minnie Styons family, let me know

A check of NC Gen Web obituaries does not list her. Many of these are fairly recent.
Looking for obit Carrie Cable Cox

Does anybody have any obit resources for Dare county? I'm looking for Carrie Josephine "Jodie" Cable Cox. She died somewhere in the middlish of Aug 1984 at the age of 101. I'm thinking her age alone would have been cause for something to appear in the paper if nothing else. She was born 19 Jan 1883 or 1884 in Mississippi, but moved with her mother and sisters to Atlanta, GA as a child after her parent's divorced. She married after 1930, probably in Atlanta, to a man named Cox. She died in Dare county it has her residence as Nags Head, but the index record says that she was buried in Atlanta on 23 Aug 1984 with no mention of which cemetery. I'm looking for the husband's full name, any mention of siblings or parents to confirm that this is indeed my Jodie and any children that might be mentioned. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
---

Angela M. Cable

Birth 1745 New Hanover Precinct, British Colonies of North America. Now Duplin County, North Carolina, USA. We are searching to see what happened to this person. The name was found in the Bible of Elijah Gregory, It listed his father Lott Gregory 1742 and Aberiah Gregory 1745. Could this be brother, sister or another wife before Nancy? If anyone knows of anyone with the name of Aberiah please contact us. This is the only place the name of Aberiah is mentioned. None of the other children noted this in their bibles only Elijah as far as we know. Thsnk you Sammie Jean Gregory Fairchild

My father's side of the family (Gray & O'Neal) is from Hatteras. It looks like your G-G-grandfather, Davis Littleton Gray (1806) and my G-G-grandfather, Little Joshua Gray (1808) were brothers. I think their father was Abner H. Gray (1777-1850). I've been doing a lot of research lately, because my family is having a reunion at Hatteras this summer. There is a Davis Gray (your G-grandfather?)from Hatteras listed as a corporal in the Civil War, from 1863-1865, on the Dare Co. Civil War Census. If I can find any info on the older DL, I will let you know.
Debbie Gray Reilly

Most problems here with asking questions about names is that many of the first names are the same. You need siblings/spouse names or birthdates to actually find the correct person. For instance, my G-Grandfather was Davis Littleton Gray (b. 1846, Chicamacomico). His father was also Davis Littleton Gray (b.1806, Chicamacomico). The older DL also had a son named Wallace, who named his son Davis Littleton and he in turn named his son Davis Littleton. Finding which one was which was a real headache. I have the same problem with my other G-Grandfather who was Dameron Midyett on the census, but Damron Midgett on my grandmother's death certificate. And his father was one of many Little Nicodemus Midgett/Midyett. Its all very confusing... :) So if there is any information out there regarding the senior DL Gray or Dameron Midgett... please let me know.

I run a tax office so this is my busy time of year but I will do my best to communicate, just understand if you dont hear from me until after April 18th, lol.

Unfortunately my all my genealogical records and pictures are all on my backup drive that is not powering up, so I have to wait for a replacement power source to be sent by the manufacturer. I do not have access to the photos until then.

Alice Ashby was my ggrandmother, her father was Henry, Dora Ashby my grandmother. Alice was fair skinned and rumored to be Native American, some of her children were clearly mulatto, the rest not. Oldest relative, a male grandson of Alices is still living at 87 or 88 in NC, will visit him this summer. I know there is one female Ashby that I have heard about but is a missing link, but I believe that was a grandchild of Alice, I need my records to confirm. I have never heard that name Vandelia but if she is from Manteo and an Ashby then we are related. The island is too small not to be. There are still relatives living there, none with the Ashby name, in fact I was hoping to make it there this summer. My great grandfather I have information for - Van Buren Case, he's related to Gallops, Baxters, Bowsers, Harvey. He had alot of
sisters all were married so their last name changed
quite a bit. I found two Ashby line that may fit
her: one is connected to mother Allice D. Ashby abt. 1860, d. Dora d. Dellia (probably short spelling) the other
Ashby - same area with head of home starting w/ Henry Ashby
I'm really interested in the pictures you mentioned. Also i bbelieve my g grandmother was buried, Pleasant Branch Baptist Church Cemetery, Currituck County abt. 1920 again name was spelled different Van Della Casen. I think the correct spelling is Vandelia...

The records should be at the Currituck County Courthouse if they have been returned from being preserved. A lot of their records were sent off to be repaired and preserved several years ago. I went there while vacationing on Roanoke Island three years ago and most of the records I was intersted in were not available and they had no idea when the process would be complete or if they would be returned or not. Give them a call to be sure before you make the trip.

Can't tell you about any other Bastardly Bonds but there were other records that show adoptions. They should be at the link I sent. Takes some searching to go through everything they have on that site.

I am from Roanoke Island but left there in 1960 when I went into the Coast Guard.

I find Harriet Beasley as you stated on the 1880 census age 33.
The 1870 census has her in Manteo living with Mary Beasley age 47. Probably her mother. there are also Polly age 26 and Willian age 14. Harriet is 23 at this time. (The transcription is given as Brasley)

The 1850 Roanoke Island census page 8 has Mary age 27, Frances age 10, Ada age 5, Harriet age 3 and Nancy at 8 months. There is also Ada age 69. The last name is transcribed as Lindley but I am more inclined to read it as Quidley.

The 1860 Roanoke Island census confirms the name to be Harriet Quidley age 40. Mary is age 37, Adda age 14, Harriet age 11, and Nancy age 8

The imformation on the census records indicates to me that the maiden name for Mary, age 37 on the 1860 census would be Quidley ahd that Harriet may well be her sister.

1850 census page 10 There is also a Thomas Quidley age given as 1 living in the home of Nancy Brickhouse (Roanoke Island) He could well be another sibling of Harriet. The Basterdly Bonds for Currituck may be good source of imformation in order to expand the search.

I find a Harriet Quidley age 30 on page 1 of the Roanoke Island, Currituck Census Record.

At this point, I would venture a guess that Harriet Quidley age 30 on the 1850 census is the mother of Thomas

I found no adult men in any of these homes.

I am looking for any information about Vandeila Beasley Willis? (1871-2-1910) biological parents. Vandelia Beasley who later married William Joseph Willis. According to the 1880 Census Vandelia was "taken to be raised" at 9 by Jessy Etheridge John Harris and Minerva (Stowe) Willis Family, and Harriet Beasely or Etheridge who was a widow and (the cook) who I think later married and was widowed again by ____Etheridge, There is some question as to a Mary Beasley 1822 or Mary Quidley B;1823 who may have been the mother of Harriet 1846 and Mary 1845. one of them may have been Vandelia mother??
One source has Nancy and Benjamin W Beasley are their parents Harriet someone may know something? There are no records Harriet's birth or marriages or that she bore any children? was she the adoptive mother "take in to raise" Vandelia and if so from Who? Where? When?

As with many thte oral story is that grandmother were Susanna Burrus Willis Tillett, and Vandelia Beasley Wilis were of Blackfeet Indian decent so that raises the questions about Great grandmother Vandelia's blood line since she was "Taken to be Raised" so Harriet "the cook" who may or may not have been her biological mother?

Thank your for any information or light you can she on my quest.

Terry Dawnmanor@aol.com
HI Ryan
You seam to keep poping up as I am invegesting my ancestry, it sound like you know a lot of history,
Mabye you can shed some light on my confusion if you would be so kind.

My name is Terry Hewitt, Samuel Avery Tillet is my Great grandfather. Wiliam Bokell Tillet my Grandfather. My Great Grandmother was Vandelia Beasley Willis, My Grandmother Suzanna Burrus Willis Tillet. We also have some common connections we also have ancestors that were light house keepers.

I am looking for any information about Vandeila Beasley Willis? (1871-2-1910) who are her biological parents. Vandelia Beasley who later married William Joseph Willis. According to the 1880 Census Vandelia was "taken to be raised" at 9yrs by Jessy Etheridge John Harris and Minerva (Stowe) Willis Family, and Harriet Beasely 1847 or Etheridge who was a widow and (the cook) who I think later married and was widowed again by ____Etheridge,
There is some questions as to a Mary Beasley 1822
one source says Mary Quidley B;1822 who may have be the Mother of Harriet 1846 and Mary 1845 an one of them may have been Vandelia mother??
One source has Nancy and Benjamin W Beasley are the parents Harriet so I am hoping someone may know something? There are no records Harriet's birth or marriages or indication that she bore any children? she may have been the foster/adoptive mother "take in to raise" Vandelia and if so from Who? Where? When?
There was docementation of a Vandelia Bonny and Vandelia Waterfeild from Knnots Island

My maternal G Granmother Vandelia Beasley Willis is buried in The AJ Stowe cemetery. Althea C Mann b1875 and John Henery Tillet were my paternal great granparents.
.

I have one document saying there is Mary Beasley b1822 who's maiden name was a Duenston the same as my mothers middle name. And another thread refers to Mary Quidley? as the plot thickens.;)

The oral history is that my grandmother and great grandmother were of Blackfeet and Cherokee heritage.
Also that one of my g.g.great grandfathers was a keeper of the Cape Hatterus Light house in the 1800s. That would probley be one of the following, E Burrus, Alpheus B. Willis, David Willis, or Quidley.

My mother said her mother and grandmother were Susanna (Sadi) Burrus Willis Tillett, and Vandelia Beasley Willis were of Blackfeet Indian decent so that raises the questions about Great grandmother Vandelia's blood line since she was "Taken to be Raised" so Harriet "the cook" who may or may not have been her biological mother?

My grandmother was Susanna Burrus Wills Fulcher 1895-1993 she remarried again in her seventies to Christian Fulcher. Susanna Married William Joseph Bokell(Kelly)Tillett, My mother was (Roselyn Duenston (Dudley) Tillett) 1932-2007 was the youngest of their eight children, Ivy, Joseph, Ethyl jean, Dorothy, William, Forest ,M Joseph and Roselyn Tillett. most are from Nags head, Portsmonth Cartereta and Pasguotank, Dare north Carolina.

Some of the sir names:on my mothers line Beasley, Willis, Etheridge, Tillett, Burrus, Daniels, Mann are intermixed so I guess the farther we go eventually we are all related in some way. LOL

Thanks your for any information or light you can she on my quest.

Terry Dawnmanor@aol.com
Hello,
I'm looking for information on Elverton or Eyberton Squires. Birth was more than likely the mid 1700s. His brother, Appleton, was born 1745. Their father was Jonas Squires b. 1705. I'm trying to pinpoint his position during various time frames. I would appreciate any information anyone has. I'm looking to find the Squires line and it doesn't matter how the surname is spelled.
Thank you,
Helen Squires
