Michael, you might check the book The Powell Family by Silas Lucas. I am a descendant of Absalom Powell(1752-1834) of Columbus Co. Absalom Powell has also been recorded at the Battle of Moores Creek Bridge 2/27/1776.
Some of the Powell records will show up in Bladen Co. as much of Columbus Co. was created from Bladen in 1808. Absalom had a son named James(b abt 1780) but I have no wife or children recorded for him. Good luck.
Jack J. Milligan and or Robert Milligan

I am trying to locate any information relating to Jack J. Milligan. Some records have his middle initial listed as C.

Son of Robert and Anna (unknown last name) Milligan. Robert and Anna's children were named:

Betty
Helen
Joseph Franklin
William W.
Jack J. was born about 1856
Lindsey Ann- was born about 1860 in Pireway, Columbus County NC and died May 29, 1925 in Horry County SC

Jack J. Died at the age of about 40 and died in North Carolina. I think he may be buried in the Roseboro NC or Sampson County area but am not sure.

Jack J Milligan was married twice. I have no documentation as to who his first wife was. They had 4 children by his first marriage

John Milligan
Edward Milligan
Mark Milligan
Lilly Miligan

He was remarried to Caledonia ( Callie) Lewis.
Callie died in 1932. She was born June of 1881. Caledonia is buried in Horry County South Carolina. I cannot locate whether Jack and Caledonia were married in SC or NC. They lived mostly in Horry County SC but had one son, Von Oshen, that was born in Charleston County SC.

Caledonia and Jack had 6 children:

Daniel Frank Milligan
George Washington Milligan ( died at age 3 of measles)
Von Oshen Milligan
Marvin Milligan
Vassie Laska Milligan
Lottie Milligan ( married to Alex Cribb)

Any information that you may have on the above name would be most appreciated. I am the granddaughter of Jack J. Milligan

Hi Tammy,

Thanks for contacting me on this! Yes, I do have a picture of Samuel White Smith and I will gladly send a copy to you. I will try to attach it to this response. Would you have any information on Mac I Young? I know a cousin of mine that lives in Ohio that would like to contact you on him. I am from Hallsboro originally and have been researching my Smith family for a long time now. I know a lot of the families down there. I always want to learn more. Do you happen to have any photos or information of family members you can share with me? I have some pictures of the Smith House you speak of too. They are several years old, just before it started to fall down. It was built by Samuel Stuckey Smith I am told by Mrs. Dorothy Powell who used to live in it. Samuel Stuckey Smith was Samuel White Smith's father. Samuel Stuckey Smith was my 3rd Great Grandfather and Samuel White Smith was my 2nd Great Grandfather. Would you happen to know where Samuel Stuckey Smith and his wife are buried in Columbus County? Samuel Stuckey Smith married first Mary Elizabeth Parker and then later married Ann Clark. Do you know the parents of Mary Elizabeth Parker or Ann Clark? I have been trying to find out this for a long time with little results. I look forward to hearing from you and if I can further help you with the family history, I will share with you what I have. I will need to get your e-mail address to send information to you. Hope to here from you soon.

Eric Ray

Peter B. Alston

Searching for the ancestry of Peter B. Alston. Peter was born, per 1850 Federal Census in 1796 in SC. He moved to Halifax, NC, more than likely when he married Martha King - marriage bond dated July 14, 1819. Three sons were born in Halifax, Co.

Peter B. Alston, his wife, Martha King Alston, his sons, George W. Alston, another unknown son, and James Alston, all left Halifax, NC in about 1827 moving to Milledgeville, Baldwin Co. GA (per 1830 Federal Census - P. B. Alston). They lived there for about ten years, where daughters, Dalace, Sarah Emily and Missouri were born. In the late 1840's the family moved to Lumpkin, Stewart Co. GA (District 24, per 1840 Federal Census), living there for about 5-10 years. Their last son, Cicero Franklin Alston was born there. Before 1850 they are in Chambers Co. AL.

In the Union Recorder newspaper, Milledgeville, Baldwin Co., GA, Peter B. Alston's name was mentioned three times in the "List of Letters". This list mentioned any letter by name as they were addressed, remaining in the Post Office there for any particular individual.

For June 1833 there was a letter for "Peter B. Alston". For June 1836 there was a letter for "Peter Alston"; and October 1836, for "Peter Allston". Notice the two "L" spelling, as there were no Alston's in Baldwin Co. with this spelling, and Peter B. Alston was the only "Peter Alston" in the county with that name. This letter with the two "L" spelling, I conclude was addressed to my Peter B.

I am curious about the "Bacot" line of Allstons, and my Peter B. Alston's possible connection. In doing more research I have found in the "Prince Fredericks Parish of Winyaw", in SC, no mention of a Joseph Belin Allston, as a son of Peter Allston, Jr. and Mary Bacot. There are four children mentioned - Peter Allston, (b. 1770); Samuel Allston, (b. 1772); Sarah Jane Allston, (b. 1779); John Hayes Allston, (b. 1786).

Groves in his book "Allstons/Alstons,... etc." Has Joseph Allston, marrying a ? Belin, with sons, Samuel, (b. 1790)and Peter, (b. 1791). I believe Groves was incorrect here, as there is no record that I can find of ANY Joseph Allston, son of Peter, Jr. and Mary. In my opinion, the Samuel and Peter mentioned by Groves as sons of a Joseph Allston, is actually the two oldest sons of Peter, Jr. and Mary.

There is record of the decendants of the youngest child, John Hayes Allston, but so far I have not been able to find anything on Peter or Samuel, the two oldest sons.

Any information of the decendants of these two sons would be greatly appreciated. Quite possibly my Peter B. is somehow connected here, and is another Peter Bacot Allston, who changed the spelling when he moved to Halifax, NC back to the one "L" spelling, as this was prevalent there.

And also there are with Peter B. Alston's family very similar naming patterns with those in the "Bacot" Allston lineage. Please help if you can.

Litaker / Laidacker / etc. DNA Project

Seeking DNA test participants. We are trying to establish genealogy links to the Litaker family. This surname is spelled a variety of ways including, but not limited to:

Litaker
Lidaker
Leidaker
Leideker
Leidecker
Laidacker
Laidaker

The 1790 Federal Census shows members of this family were living in Rowan and Mecklenburg Counties but members could have settled anywhere in North Carolina. Research leads us to believe members of this family were in Pennsylvania prior to North Carolina. However, there seems to be a horrible lack of documentation to prove ancestry – thus the DNA project. If the DNA matches, we will know we are on the right track. If it does not match, they we will know to look in other directions.

We hope to find male Litakers (and other similiar spellings) to take the Y-DNA67 test. We are using Family Tree DNA (www.FamilyTreeDNA) for the project.

If you would like more information about this new DNA project, please contact me.

Linda Allred Cooper
lacooper@mindspring.com
Delco was New Berlin. Hugh McRae from Wilmington had alot to do with New Berlin. The area was survey and laid out in tracts just like it was done in Germany. This was done to attract the German immigrants to the area which worked but due to World War I and the negativity associated with Germany, the name was changed to Delco after the brand of batteries used in the telegraphs and lighting instruments in the Atlantic Coastline Railroad , which had boomed in the community. I dont think an official transcription of Weyman Church has been done since 1939 and that was not accurate. I am currently working on thematic historical journals of that area.

Seek information on Frances Rebecca Smith? born about 1846 in Bogue, Whiteville who married James Love from MA. Family lore states that she lived on a plantation when the Yankees came. She came out with a gun and said she would shoot them if they burned down her daddy's plantation. James Love was so impressed that he came back after the war and married her. Naturally, she was disowned from her family. Does anyone know of a Smith plantation and who the owner was. Thank you for your help

Hello Lisa !

Wow! This post of mine has been on the site for almost 2 years! Yes, Samuel Stuckey Smith was my 3rd Great grandfather and his first wife, Mary Elizabeth Parker Smith was my 3rd Great Grandmother. They both lived in Columbus County, I think around the Welches Creek area. I really don't know much about Mary Elizabeth Parker Smith, some have said that she was Massachuesetts, but would love to find out more about her family too, etc. Ann Clark was Samuel's 2nd wife. I feel she was from Bladen County... Samuel died in Columbus County, NC in 1858 and Ann lived a little while longer I believe since she is not in the 1870 NC Columbus County Census. I don't know where Samuel, Mary Elizabeth Parker (1st wife) or Ann Clark (2nd wife) are buried. Sure wish I could find out this information. I have looked and looked for them for years... The 1858 death date is not too far in the past for finding most gravesites and he was pretty well off as a landowner in Columbus County at that time. Also, I had always heard from my late Great Aunt Mary Lou Smith Perry of Hallsboro (she was the great granddaughter to Samuel and Elizabeth),that Samuel Stuckey Smith was Presbyterian. I would appreciate anything you may know about him and his first wife and/or his 2nd wife if you should know or are able to come across any information about them or the whereabouts of their graves.

Thanks so much for your response to my messeage on the message board !

Eric Ray

I am researching John Clark who lived near Puncheon Creek, east of White Marsh Swamp in the late 1700's and early 1800's. This area was originally part of Bladen County, NC and became Columbus County, NC in 1808.

John Clark is named co-executor of the estate of John Cohoon along with William Cohoon. John Cohoon's will dated 25 Dec 1781 includes a bequest to Penelope Clark.

I believe John Clark had four sons - James, David, William / Wilson Brantley, and possibly John Jr.

The land of John Clark is referenced in land transactions as late as the 1850s.

Any information regarding this family would be very appreciated. I am happy to share the information I have about his sons.

I am trying to solve a family mystery. One of our ancestors Lucy Mahaly Singletary married an Amos Ward in Columbus County in 1868. They had a son James Bryant Ward (who was my great-great-great grandfather. Soon after, Lucy left Amos and changed James' name to Singletary (her maiden name) but no one seems to know why. The rest of us have been Singeltarys ever since but in actuality we are Wards I suppose. Anyway, I have found the grave of James, but can not find any death records or cemetery info on either Amos or Lucy. I do know that she later married Calvin Hathaway in 1877 and had another child, Daniel Monroe Hathaway. I also know that she was living with Daniel and his family in Horry County in 1910 (when she died). She was listed as married on the census record but Calving was not living there. They both died in 1910. Perhaps he was in a nursing home or something. Any information anyone has about either Amos Ward, Lucy Singletary Hathaway, or Calvin or Daniel Hathaway would be greatly appreciated.
