In the Western NC Genealogy Resource Center for Cherokee County, a listing is provided of Cherokee County Delayed Birth Certificates. Within this list, a "Winnie Virginia," is listed as born on 24 Jan 1922 to A. B. Smith and Hattie Neoma Lunsford.

I have been researching A. B. Smith (My GGGranfather) for 5 years, and find this entry very surprising. First, A. B. Smith at this time was a Baptist Minister of some standing in Cherokee County. He was still married to his wife Martha "Mattie" Morrow, daughter of Elbert G. Morrow, although both were in their 60's in 1922.

The only thing I can figure is that Hattie Neoma Lunsford needed a "Father of record" for young Winnie, and turned to her spiritual father to help.

If anyone has ANY insight into this mystery, I would greatly appreciate it!
