Stephen Pace seems to have moved around a lot, generally westward but it appears sometimes back and forth. I am not at all certain that it is the same Stephen Pace as his brothers probably named sons Stephen Pace too. However, Bruce does believe that Stephen's illegimate son Alsey Pace married Zilpha Hall in 1820 in Johnston Co., NC. She had been born in 1800 Chatham Co, NC I think, and is the lady I am searching for because she could be my Abner Pace's mother.

In 1794 Stephen Pace was chosen as guardian of two Mays girls--Judy and Ann, I think. See the Chatham Co. Web page and click on Indentures and Apprentice bonds. Later Stephen Pace is connected to an Anson Co. man whose son is named May Buckner (I would have to look up that last name). I suspect that perhaps the man's wife might be a May.
