Does anyone know the origins of the Donneslon of Caswell County, North Carolina? I've read a few different references, but have found nothing concrete. I believe it's an Irish or Scottish name.

Anyhow, here are some names and dates of my ancestors. Please contact me if you know anything about them, they look familiar, or you believe we're related. I know there are more than one Donnelson family in this area, so please feel free to dop me a line with any questions.

Humphrey DONNELSON. Died in 1871 in Caswell Co, North Carolina, USA.

In 1780, Humphrey married Mary Hannah RILEY.

Mary Hannah RILEY. Died in 1790 in Caswell Co, North Carolina, USA.

They had the following children ...
i. William DONNELSON ()
ii. Robert DONNELSON ()
iii. Andrew DONNELSON (1750 - 1830)
iv. Mary DONNELSON (b.1765)
v. Humphrey DONNELSON (b.1778)
vi. THIS DOES SHOW THAT YOUR SAMUEL LIVED IN THE SAME
COMMUNITY AS THE WELLS AND THE OAKLEYS.

MILES WELLS IS THE FATHER OF STEPHEN AND
SAMUEL WELLS. STEPHEN WELLS MARRIED SARAH WILLIAMS IN ORANGE COUNTY, NC
IN 1802. THE WELLS LIVED IN PERSON COUNTY AT IT'S SOUTHWESTERN CORNER
WHERE IT INTERSECTED WITH CASWELL AND ORANGE COUNTIES. EITHER THE
WILLIAMS FAMIMY LIVED IN ORANGE, OR THEY FOUND IT MORE CONVENIENT TO
GET THEIR MARRIAGE BOND AT THE ORANGE COURTHOUSE IN HILLSBOROUGH, WHICH
WAS ABOUT AS CLOSE AS GOING TO PERSON COUNTY COURTHOUSE FURTHEREAST.

pg. 133 Samuel Williams to Peggy Inscore of Granville Co., for $133
1/3 for 133 1/3 acres on Cubb Creek adj. William Oakley

16 Sept. 1815 THE SALE OF THIS LAND TO SOMEONE LIVING IN GRANVILLE
MAY STRENTHEN THE ARGUMENT THAT THE WILLIAMS LIVED IN GRANVILLE PRIOR
TO PERSON. MY WELLS FAMILY ALSO LIVED IN GRANVILLE BEFORE SETTLING
INTO CASWELL/PERSON. SAMUEL WELLS AND ELIZABETH OAKLEY WERE MARRIED IN
GRANVILLE IN 1794. THIS MEANS THAT THE OAKLEY FAMILY ALSO MIGRATED FROM
GRANVILLE TO PERSON. IT MIGHT BE WISE TO CHECK OUT THE LOCATIONS OF
THESE FAMILIES IN GRANVILLE AND SEE IF THEY WERE NEIGHBORS, AND PERHAPS
KINSMEN. I KNOW THAT THE MILES WELLS FAMILY AND WILLIAM OAKLEY FAMILY
WERE NEIGHBORS IN GRANVILLE, AS WELL AS IN PERSON.

SOMETHING WHICH MAY NOT HAVE ANY BEARINGS AT ALL ON YOUR FAMILY, IS THE
FACT THAT THE WELLS FAMILY WERE DESCENDED FROM A THOMAS ROBERTS OF
ELIZABETH CITY COUNTY, VA, THROUGH HIS DAUGHTER ELIZABETH ROBERTS WHO
MARRIED A WELLS ANCESTOR AS HER SECOND HUSBAND. ALL OF HER CHILDREN
WERE OF THIS SECOND MARRIAGE.

----

Dear Nancy,

I spent a couple hours looking into one Samuel Williams and his wife Sarah. Yolanda Reid came over and gave me a great deal of help or I would not have made much progress.

Samuel Williams died September 30th 1841 and he made his will (it was a verbal will told to his family members) the day before or September 29th 1841 (Ro. Co. Will Book 11 page 194) (Will book 11 page 263) (inventory on pages 109-111 Will book 11). Joseph Gunn and William Martin were involved and appeared in open Court to testify that the will was legit (January session of 1842 around the 2nd or 3rd) Robertson County, TN.

During all our search we couldn't pen point where he was living. Bennett and Solomon lived with Sarah and three daughters are mentioned as living with them with several already married and living on their own.

Sarah Williams born in N C is listed as being 70 in the 1850 census with one son and three daughters still living with her (all were born in N C) The Williams Family or at least Samuel and Sarah must have arrived in Robertson County just shortly before he died.

In 1858 Sarah Williams and three or four of her children are living on the land (near Cedar Hill) owned by Jesse Williams of Montgomery, AL (as you know he died that year and had 4 or so slaves). Jesse's land in Robertson County was in the 8th district not too far from a Fyke Family (I believe it was part of the 640 acre land grant of Mabkin Fyke) and the property called for Spring Creek of Sulfur Fork putting the land on one corner somewhere near Cedar Hill (8th district). Jeremiah Batts lived a short distance from Sarah Williams and I know he owned the land along Kinney's Road just out of Cedar Hill.

We couldn't find a tombstone listed in any of the Cemetery books meaning that the cemetery hasn't been mapped or they have fieldstones or someone has destroyed the Williams cemetery. We did find the Cemetery listed near Scott Richards (Beanie's son) Richards Road and it has a few Williams Family members in it a Henry without a date. I believe it also had at least one fieldstone.

I can't find Samuel Williams buying land in Robertson County it is possible that I overlooked something.

I found a Jesse Williams living on the KY TN line (about 1841 or so) near Keysburg, KY selling land and slaves to Drewery Bell (250 acres). I'm just wondering if this is the same Jesse Williams that died in Montgomery AL. in 1858.

In 1850 Sarah Williams had the following children living with her, Liddy, Parthenia, Mary and Solomon Williams.

In Will book 12 page 338 David Williams is administrator of the estate of Jesse Williams (of AL), but David must have died or gave it up, because James M. Gunn takes over in Will book 12 page 434. There were some lawsuits involved with this later will of Jesse Williams.

I hope this helps a little.

Best Regards,

Tim Henson
===

This is what I have proven through his children.
I am searching for information about John Henry Moore born about 1834 in NC. County, parents, and siblings are unknown. He appeared in Helena, Phillips, AR, about 1863 when he enlisted in the Confederate army. After the war, he married Susan Helen Walton Loury/Lowery of Helena and remained in the area for the rest of his life. DNA from this line has been submitted to the Moore family project. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Linda Wilson

David WILSON

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/23780855/

“….To his surprise, Wilson learned that the family still lived in the same big house in Caswell County, N.C. The owner’s name, according to the county clerk’s office: David Wilson.
In “Meeting David Wilson,” the filmmaker recounts his first contact with his namesake:
“I called there, and I eventually spoke with him, and I said: ‘Hello, Mr. David Wilson?’ And he said: ‘Yes?’ And I said, ‘Well, my name is David Wilson, and I believe your family once owned mine.’
“He paused for a second and said: ‘Well, that could be.’
“It was the most uncomfortable feeling I’ve ever had.”
Accompanied by his director and cameraman, Daniel Woolsey, David A. Wilson, the young, black New York journalist — set out to meet David B. Wilson — the white son of 1940s and ’50s Southern segregation and owner of a nationally known barbecue joint that opened in 1949.
‘Dialogue a lot of people dread having’
“I think he’s going to be a tobacco-chewing, straw-eatin’, rifle-totin’, rockin’ chair-sittin’, lemonade-drinkin’ redneck,” Wilson, half-joking, said as he and Woolsey hit the road from New York.
What they found was quite different.
“I have so much respect for him because here you have a man who’s just this common guy, yet he’s been put in a situation, and he’s welcomed the situation where he’s been put in the middle of this dialogue that a lot of people dread having,” Wilson said.
“David and I, in our conversations, don’t address all the issues regarding race. We don’t find all the answers. What I think we do is set the example that it is possible to to talk about race in a way in which we can all come together. We can focus on our future together, as opposed to our divided past.”
The Wilsons agreed on some things and disagreed on others, but without rancor or apprehension. “After spending hours with David, something happened that I really didn’t anticipate,” David A. Wilson says in the film. “I began to see less and less of a descendant of my family’s former slave owner and more and more of a decent and kind-hearted human being.”
So they put together a reunion of both families.
“This was amazing,” Wilson said. “Here we stood, not in the shadow of the ignorance that dominated our family’s history, but together as newfound friends and family.”
That experience encouraged Wilson to do something no one in his family had done before: return to his ancestral homeland in Ghana. There, he visited the centuries-old forts where future slaves were held, an experience that helped him recognize “how strong we are. Look what we’ve been through. Look what we had to go through.”
The journey led him to this realization:
“We have all these sorts of problems: gang violence, imprisonment. If we can understand our ancestors and understand the strength that they had, then we should realize by extension that we have that same strength — that we’re not the descendants of victims but victors. ...
“They overcame obstacles for anyone else who wanted to take part in the American dream.”

--"Not the descendants of victims but victors”
c2008 MSNBC April 11, 2008

****

Who was the progenitor of this DAVID WILSON line?

JOHN and JAIN BLACK

I'm searching for information regarding JOHN and JAIN BLACK of Caswell Co., NC. Family legend says that their son, MOSES BLACK, was born in Milton, or Milltown, VA, which was Halifax Co., VA, in 1781, and later became Caswell Co., NC, as I understand it. Their 5 daughters, Naomi, Agnes, Polly (Mary), Jane (Jinnie) and Priscilla, were all born in NC between 1783-1792. We have not been able to locate any records of any kind to substantiate any of the above other than the Pulaski Co., KY census records that state the above. MOSES BLACK married KATHERINE DYE, daughter of WILLIAM DYE and REBECCA RANDOLPH in Pulaski Co., KY in 1812. The family moved from NC (assumed to be Caswell Co.) to KY around 1799. In fact, all the children were married in KY. Any help or clues would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. William HALL shows up in the 1790 census in Randolph Co.,NC. and James TARPLEY shows up near them on the 1800 census there. Their brothers William, Willis and Davis also appear there in census records. Possiblly all were from Caswell Co. Does anyone have knowledge of who their parents were?
The TARPLEYS leave Randolph Co. about 1818 and move to TN.

The many Peterson or Patterson of Caswell County NC -- Looking for parents & siblings of SARAH PETERSON, wife of NOAH PAGE

I'm trying to find the parents & siblings of the SUSAN PETERSON who married NOAH PAGE Jan1820 in Caswell Co NC. (And researching all PAGE of Cawell, Rockingham and Guilford counties NC.)

NOAH PAGE was born about 1794-1796 almost surely Caswell County NC, evidently to WILLIAM PAGE and NANCY COBB (based on much very good circumstantial evidence). He moved his family from Caswell Co NC to Scott Co VA around 1838, between the 1835 death of Nancy (Cobb) Page and the 1840-41 death of William Page, both having died in Caswell County.

Noah Page married Susan Peterson, bond date 10Jan1820 in Caswell Co NC, bondsman Benjamin Dame... (Dameson or Danielson?). Susan was born about 1799-1805.

Notes concerning Susan's maiden name and possible relatives:

It seems that the surname Peterson was often seen in the records as Patterson, Petterson, or Paterson.

Evidence suggests that Noah Page and Susan Peterson used the normal "naming conventions' of the day in regard to the name of their first son (William) and their second daughter (Nancy), which matches that of William Page and Nancy Cobb. IF (if) Noah & Susan also followed the rule that the second son would be named after the mother's father, than Susan Peterson Page's father would been nammed JOSEPH. (We can't use the same test for the possible name of Susan's mother, because the name of Noah and Susan's first-born daughter is still unknown.) Looking at the list of Caswell county marriages and those whose 1820 census households contained females of Susan's age, then it appears that her father was probably JOSEPH PETERSON JUNIOR.

Joseph "Junr" Peterson mrd Sinty (Syntha) Stafford bond 07Sep1790 Caswell Co, bondsman Joseph Peterson (Sr.?).
Another bond was obtained on the very same day, for another Peterson-Stafford marriage, using a bondsman of the same name.

Nancy Peterson mrd Adam Stafford, bond date 07Sep1790, Caswell Co NC, bondsman Joseph Peterson.

Turner Peterson/Paterson was guardian of about 5 orphans of John Tennisson/Tenneson who died soon after his 1807 Caswell county will probated in 1808, then Turner married an older daughter of John Tennisson in 1808. Two of John's daughers married Cobbs; Elizabeth married Henry Cobb, Anne married William Cobb. John also had a daughter "Ceacy" (probably Cecilia), who under the name Celia Tennisson married Turner Patterson in Caswell county, bond date 25July1808, bondsman Levy Tennisson.

A Vincent Peterson first showed up in 1920 Caswell county, and NOAH PAGE was bondsman for his marriage to Polley Peterson in Caswell county NC, bond date 19May1821. Remember Noah Page had married Susan Peterson in Caswell county just the year before.

In the 1830 Caswell county census, Noah Page & Susan were living immediately next door to a John Peterson "Junr".

So Noah's wife Susan Peterson is almost certainly of this Peterson/Paterson - Cobb - Tennisson bunch. Descendents of Turner Patterson or John "Tennison" say on the Rootsweb Rockingham County NC Message Board that Levi was a brother of "Ciclia", and that she was Turner's second marriage, since there were several children born before 1808. "They had Nancy Patterson, Turner Dennis Patterson, William C. Patterson."

According to Caswell County, NC Will books ....", 1832 Will book M, p179, is "Sales of property of Providence Haddock sold 30Apr1832 to NOAH PAGE, Stephen Haddock, Elijah Graves, JOHN PETERSON, and a few others. In Jan court 1835, sales of property of Azeriah Kimbro decd sold on 12Nov1834, buyers included THOMAS PAGE, .... JOHN PETERSON, Thomas W. Chandler, THOMAS PETERSON, and just a few others. A JOHN PETERSON was still buying estate property on 06Dec1836, 18Feb1837, & 18Feb1839.

HERE IS A QUITE COMPLETE LIST OF ALL OF THE EARLY PETERSON MARRIAGES AND CENSUS RECORDS I COULD FIND:

(1) According to "North Carolina Marriage Bonds, 1741-1868" (the following includes ALL Peterson or Patterson
in Caswell County, and a few in other nearby counties):
Joseph Paterson mrd Rebecca Carson, bond date 17Mar1772 Guilford Co NC, bondsman James Starrett.
Elizabeth Patterson mrd James Merideth bond 31Oct1780 Caswell Co NC, bondsman David Patterson.
Nancy Peterson mrd Adam Stafford, bond date 07Sep1790, Caswell Co NC, bondsman Joseph Peterson.
Joseph "Junr" "Peterson" mrd Sinty (Syntha) Stafford bond 07Sep1790 Caswell Co, bondsman
Joseph Peters... (Peterson Sr.?).
Notice that Joseph Junr & Nancy are obviously related -- same bond date, and both marrying Stafford.
Isaac Patterson mrd Barbery Coble bond date 29Nov1799 in ORANGE Co NC, bondsman Jno. Bullock.
Turner Patterson (Sr?) mrd "Celia" Tennisson bond 25July1808 Caswell Co, bondsman Levy Tennisson.
Fanney Patterson mrd Joseph Swan bond date 17Jan1811 Caswell Co NC, bondsman Isaac West.
William Peterson married Patsey Nowles bond 20Jan1814 Caswell Co, bondsman William Nowles.
Cassandia (sic) Caroline Patterson mrd Thomas J. The marriages
of many or most of these men can be seen above in the marraige list of section (1):

In 1790 Caswell Co, the actual census is not available -- names are from Tax Lists or other sources.
The results of Ancestry.com searching for any Soundex version of "Peterson", listed:
PATTERSON: James
PETERSON: John, & James

In 1800 Caswell Co, the census lists the people in the order the census-taker encountered them, which
allows one to get an idea of relatives or friends. Ancestry.com searching for any Soundex version of
"Peterson", listed:
PATTERSON: Gideon, William, & James.
PETERSON: Jno.

In 1810 Caswell Co the census had absolutely no dates, and had been re-arranged alphabetically. But
the alphabetical arrrangement was only with respect to the first letter of the last name, so the result
would still leave inference of where they might have been located RELATIVE to each other. William
Paterson was listed just two names before William Page (John Page and Maryan Poteate between
them), and Turner ("Fannie") Paterson was listed just before William Paterson. None of these three
counties included dates, not even on the first or last page of the cenuses:
Ancestry.com's index listed no "Peterson", but 6 "PATERSON". and 1 "PETTERSON" (James).
Since 1800, Gideon and Jonathan had dissappeared.
Noah Page's Susan would have been only age 5 through 11. The only household that did NOT
have a female in Susan's age group, was that of MARY. All of the rest had daughters that could fit
Susan's age, but the least likely are Joseph Sr., and Mary, since their youngest daughters were in
the age group 10 through 15.)
Column headings were; 0 thru 9, 10 thru 15, 26 thru 25, 26 thru 44, 45 & above -- then all other
free persons, & number of slaves. And Caswell county added (as all should have); numbers for
Town or District and County of residence:
TURNER (listed as "Fanne" by Ancestry.com); 21001 11010 - 8, 1, 300, 90
Joseph Sr.; 00101 01200 - 0, 1, 100, 35
Joseph Jur.' 21010 10100 - 0, 1, 90, 30
(Youngest female was age 0 thru' 9, born 1790-1800, Susan Peterson's age group)
Mary; 00000 00110 - 0, 1, 50, 20.
Thos.; 00010 10101 - 1, 1, 50, 20.
William; 00110 11010 - 1, 1, 100 40 (or 110?)
James; 00201 43010 - 4, 1, 150, 50.

In 1810 GUILFORD Co, Greensboro (listed as encountered, not alphabetical), three "PATTERSON":
Grunbury (Greenbury?): 20010 10110 - 0, 0
Michael: (image upside down): 00201 00010 - 0, 0
Wiler/Wilson: (Wm Walker was 11 homes ahead, on same page): 40010 00100 - 0, 0

In 1810 ROCKINGHAM Co,(which was listed as encountered, not alphabetized),one "Patterson":
Jarrot: 12001 11000 - 0,1

In 1820 Caswell county census, unfortunately, like that for 1810, was re-arranged alphabetically
according to first letter of each surname. But since the person transcribing the census into alpha-
betical order was recording them in the order encountered in the census, we still might be able to
get a sense of the relative locations of the various people in that catagory of first letters for the
last name. For example, James & John PAGE were listed only one name before that of John Peterson
(who had NO females under age 25), and Samuel & Whitehead PAGE were after John Peterson,
separated by only 9 names.
For Caswell county, none of the individual pages were dated, except that the FIRST page for this
1820 census was dated 21-January-1821 (sic - not 1820), and the last page (of 57 pages) had
"Caswell Co NC 1820" written lightly near a margin. The 1820 censuses for Guilford & Rockingham
counties had no date shown anywhere in their censuses.
Ancestry.com lists a Wm "PATTERSON", all 7 others were "PETERSON". SInce the previous 1810
census, Mary's household dissappeared, while Vincent & Isaac seem to have newly appeared, & Turner
seems to have moved to Rockingham Co., while one Joseph moved or newly appears in Guilford Co.
Isaac might have been surveyed twice, once in Caswell Co with no children, and once in Guilford Co
with 1 young male and 3 or 4 young females. Turner is apparently up in Rockingham Co, probably
living near Major Brockman, where Turner (Junr"? served as bondsman for the marriage of Major
Brockman "Jr" to Elizabeth Paterson in 1877 Rockingham County NC. Our NOAH PAGE married
Susan Peterson on 10Jan1820, but she and Noah apparently did not form their own household
during this census, so Noah or she could have both been with one other family, or with separate
families. So in 1820 we find the following, where James, John, Vincent & Isaac have NO females
in Susan's age group, but there were young ladies of Sarah's possible age in the households of
James, Thomas, William and Joseph Jr.)  . According to Ancestry.com, the catagories in 1820 were;
number of free white males & females of ages: 0 to 10, 10 to 16, 16 to 26, 26 to 45, 45 and older;
number of other free persons except Indians not taxed; number of slaves; and town or district and
county of residence. Additionally, the 1820 census for the first time asked the number of free white
males 16 to 18 (so the free white males section had SIX columns, females FIVE); number of persons
to be naturalized; number engaged in agriculture, commercial, or manufacture; number of "colored"
persons (sometimes in age categories); and number of other persons except Indians.
Remember when they say an age group goes "to" a number, the group does not include that number.
Noah's new bride Susan would have been age 15 through 21:
William, 200010 20100 0100 0000 0000 00 00 0000
William had two females age 9 through 9 and one female age 16 thru 25.
ISAAC, 000010 00000 0100 0000 0000 00 00 0000
Isaac and Vincent, the two new-comers, had no females under age 26.
James, 000001 13410 0400 0300 0240 00 00 0000
James Peterson had 1 female age 0 thru 9, 3 age 10 thru 15, and 4 age 16 thru 25.
John: 200100 00100 0300 0200 0000 00 00 0000
John had one female under 26, in the 16 through 25 age group.
JOSEPH JUNR, 100201 00101 0300 0000 0000 00 00 0000
Joseph Junr had only one female under 26, age 16 thru' 25, born 1795-1804, again Susan's age.
Thomas, 000001 21011 0300 1001 0000 00 00 0000
Thomas had 2 females age 0 thru 9 and 1 age 10 thru 15.
VINCENT: 100011 00001 0200 2100 0010 00 00 0000
Vincent had one male age 0 through 9, one 26 thru 44, & one 45 or older. Since the female was
in the age group of the younger male, Vincent was probably the younger of the two adult males.
Vincent and Isaac, the two new-comers, had no females under age 26.
William "Patterson"): 000011 02001 0200 0100 00 00 0000
This second William had 2 females in the 10 through 15 age group.
NOAH PAGE mrd 10Jan1820 but did not yet have his own household, so he and probably his bride
were probably in the home of his father Wm., or one of his siblings, or even with any of his bride
Susan Peterson's family.
Noah's father, William Page: 230301 20010 0200 0000 0000 00 00 0000
Notice that William Page shows no famale in Susan's age group, just one female age 26 thru' 45,
which in 1820 would mean born 1774-1794, the birth-range of his still-living wife Nancy.
However, also notice that he has a total of 8 males, THREE in the 26 through 44 age group.

In 1820 GUILFORD Co, re-arranged alphabettically as to first letter of last name, no pages dated except
the first of 79 pages has the written date; ... "this 15th of January in the year One Thousand Eight
Hundred and Twenty one." The pages were thin and very smudged by ink and ink feedthrough from the
other side of the paper, so there are many names here that could be added or argued. Ancestry.com
identified only 7 households of soundex Peterson, all spelled "Patterson". I possibly found a few others:
Isaac: 100010 (2or3)1010 0100 0000 0000 00 00 0000
Johann (John C.?): 000010 30100 0100 0000 0000 00 00 0000
Louisa? (must have just been married)
No Brockman is any longer seen near Turner in this 1830 census, not on this or previous
or next census pages. In fact Ancestry.com shows no Brockman anywhere in NC, and
no Major Brockman or any variation of such, are shown anywhere in 1830 U.S..
A "Col. Hel P." Brockman and Manning Brockman are in Greenville SC, while
the only John Brockman's seem to be John & John Jr. side by side in Albemarle Co VA,
one in Louisa Co VA, one in Green Co KY, one in Cole Co MO, & one in Washington Co PA.

In 1840 Caswell county, all the soundex versions of Peterson shown by Ancestry.com are:
PATTERSON: Isaac, & William.
PETERSON: Elizabeth, Jno., John, and "Wilson" (Wilson was age 40 thru' 49 - conflicts 1830?).
(Wilson and probably at least one of these John's were previously in Guilford or Rockingham County.)

Note: Turner Peterson/Paterson was guardian of about 5 orphans of John Tennisson/Tenneson who died
soon after his 1808 will. Two of John' Tennisson's daughters married Cobbs; Elizabeth married Henry
Cobb, Anne married William Cobb. John also mentions a daughter "Ceacy" or Cecilia, who married
Turner Patterson in 1808. The Peterson-Tennesson families were close, so could be more marriages.

A first glance suggests that it is likely that siblings of Noah's wife Sarah could have been;
Polly, Thomas, William, Vincent, John Jr., Blanch, Susannah, Martha, and possibly Turner (Jr?).

Can anyone figure out who the parents and/or siblings were, of the Susan Peterson who married Noah Page in 1820?

For some reason I don't usually get alerted to replies, so please alert me to replies or write me direct via A Klinger @ Charter .

Ferdinand Crowder was the son of Richardson Crowder and Anne Samuel. Although supposedly born in Mecklenburg Co., VA, Ferdinand's parents were married in Caswell Co., NC in Apr. 1821 and had other children and lived there until at least 1850. Ferdinand married Delilah Campbell, but I do not know the date or anything about Delilah's family. Supposedly, Delilah was born in 1825 in NC. Any help with the Crowder, Samuel, or Campbell families would be greatly appreciated.

Corrupt Caswell County Birth Database Redux

Dear Folks:

Other posts have addressed this subject. However, I have been fighting
(discussing) with Ancestry.com for some time over an obvious problem
with their Caswell County births database. It shows many known to have
been born in Caswell County as being born in Catawba County. Some of
these are my relatives (others may be yours), and I have given them
(Ancestry.com) many examples.

Ancestry.com refuses to acknowledge the error. I understand from
others that it has something to do with an old county list not being
merged properly with a new county list. However, that makes no
difference. An erroneous database is just that. It will make Caswell
County research much more difficult.

While I do not like to sound shrill or in any way obsessive, I will
not give up on this. Researchers are being mislead daily. If you are a
subscriber to Ancestry.com, please use the following correspondence to
register your dissatisfaction with their service. If you belong to a
message board relevant to Caswell County, please post this message.

I, on behalf of the CCHA, pay the maximum that you can for an annual
Ancestry.com subscription. It is not inexpensive. However, they ignore
my pleas. Perhaps together we can persuade them to correct their
mistake with respect to Caswell County.

Please note that the following correspondence with Ancestry.com is in
reverse chronological order.

Thanks.

Rick
_______________

1 November 2007

Recently you requested personal assistance from our on-line support
center. Below is a summary of your request and our response.

Dear Kimberly:

Thanks for the response, but it is inadequate. You have an entire
North Carolina Births database that has captured the wrong county code
for thousands of births. Ancestry.com has captured the Catawba County
code when it should be the Caswell County code. To say that you have
only one way to correct a database is not correct. It may be the only
way that I could comment on an error, but Ancestry.com should (and
must) revisit this database. From where did you obtain the data? Go
back to your source. There you will see the coding error.

Please forward this message to those directly responsible for the
North Carolina Births database. There is a real problem that must be
addressed.

Please understand that I am not some casual user of the Caswell County
data.
Caswell CO., NC HARRISON Surname

I am looking for HARRISONS from Caswell Co., NC that carry the HARRISON surname. I am wondering if these HARRISONS have done the Y-DNA testing. There is a group of HARRISONS that have been tested and their test results are displayed at http://www.worldfamilies.net/surnames/h/harrison/results.htm... . There is also a Patriach Page at http://www.worldfamilies.net:80/Surnames/h/harrison/pats.htm.... I am very interested in these Harrisons especially a Seaborn Harrison who died there in 1799. If anyone carries the Harrison surname and could be tested for this Caswell Co., NC location, please contact me.

-----Original Message-----
From: Rick Frederick [mailto:rfrederi2@comcast.net]
Sent: Thursday, November 01, 2007 10:42 PM
To: 'ncccha@yahoogroups.com'
Subject: Inaccurate Data [Incident: 071027-000739]

Dear Folks:

I have been fighting this issue for almost two years.

Please be careful when you use the Ancestry.com North Carolina Birth Database. It is corrupted.

It shows people obviously born in Caswell County to have been born in Catawba County.

Best regards.

Rick

PS I will continue the battle.

-----Original Message-----
From: Rick Frederick [mailto:rfrederi2@comcast.net]
Sent: Thursday, November 01, 2007 2:46 PM
To: 'Ancestry.com Support'
Subject: Inaccurate Data [Incident: 071027-000739]

-----Original Message-----
From: Ancestry.com Support [mailto:ancestrysupport@custhelp.com]
Sent: Thursday, November 01, 2007 1:33 PM
To: rfrederi2@comcast.net
Subject: Inaccurate Data [Incident: 071027-000739]

Recently you requested personal assistance from our on-line support center. Below is a summary of your request and our response.

We will assume your issue has been resolved if we do not hear from you within 72 hours.

Thank you for allowing us to be of service to you.

You may also update this question by replying to this message. Text entered into any other part of this message will be discarded.

[===> Please enter your reply below this line <===]
Dear Kimberly:
Thanks for the response, but it is inadequate. You have an entire North Carolina Births database that has captured the wrong county code for thousands of births. Ancestry.com has captured the Catawba County code when it should be the Caswell County code. To say that you have only one way to correct a database is not correct. It may be the only way that I could comment on an error, but Ancestry.com should (and must) revisit this database. From where did you obtain the data? Go back to your source. There you will see the coding error.
Please forward this message to those directly responsible for the North Carolina Births database. There is a real problem that must be addressed.
Please understand that I am not some casual user of the Caswell County data. I am an archivist, historian, and the webmaster for the Caswell County Historical Association and the Caswell County NC GenWeb. I have an obligation to those who are researching Caswell County to make sure that Ancestry.com does something about this massive error. I will not give up until the database is corrected in its entirety; so you might as well involve others now.
Thanks and best regards.
Rick Frederick
rick@ncccha.org

[===> Please enter your reply above this line <===]
If your issue remains unresolved, please update this question here.

Subject
Inaccurate Data

Discussion Thread
Response (Kimberly)	11/01/2007 01:32 PM
Dear Rick,

We appreciate your message.

Regrettably, this is the only method we offer to report errors with a specific database.

If there is anything else with which we might assist you, please let us know.

Kimberly
Member Solutions
Ancestry.com
http://ancestry.custhelp.com/

Customer (Rick Frederick)	10/31/2007 09:41 PM
You are missing the point. The entire database is corrupted. It shows thousands (perhaps tens of thousands) of people as being born in Catawba County, North Carolina, when they actually were born in Caswell County, North Carolina. To suggest that I comment on each record individually is ridiculous. Please send this issue higher up the chain of authority. It is a major problem that is affecting all doing research on Caswell County, North Carolina.
Response (Kimberly)	10/31/2007 12:23 PM
Dear Rick,

We appreciate your message.

Can I add or edit comments or list corrections needed for a specific record found in a database?
In our continued efforts to provide an improved experience for our users, we have created an
online error reporting system, called Customer Contributed Content. When you are viewing the record for a specific individual where this feature
is available, you will see a Comments and Corrections link located in the right Page
Tools column, as show in the image to the right.

Note: This link is not available on any page where
an image appears, but rather on the index for an individual whose image you may be viewing. For reporting errors with images themselves, please
click here. Please use this feature to submit this suggestion and any future corrections.
Once you have clicked the Comments and Corrections link, you will be presented with three options, depending on what type of issue you want to report. Each of these is explained in further detail below.
Click the image to see it located
on an Ancestry page.

Note: A new window is typically created when submitting either a User Comment or an Error Report (discussed below). In both of these cases, you will want to make sure you do not have software running that blocks pop-up windows. Otherwise, the appropriate form may not appear for you to indicate what error you are seeing.
Alternate names
You can provide corrections or additions for a record, such as for:
•	Transcription errors
•	Birth or maiden names (e.g., if a known name change has occurred)
•	Nicknames (to increase search options that will locate this record)
•	Name variations (if these occur for records)
•	Incorrect originals (i.e., the original record is incorrect)
To indicate an alternate (or corrected) name exists, follow these simple steps:
1.	Click on the Comments and Corrections link from the individual's record page
2.	Click the Add an Alternate Name link on the next page
3.	Enter information in the Given Name and Surname fields
4.	For the Reason, indicate any of those previously described
5.	Provide a brief but helpful Explanation of the information you enter
6.	Click the Submit correction button
User comments
General comments you wish to indicate can be included here. These comments should adhere to the Message Board posting rules. For example, you might include a comment such as the following:
The rest of this family is found under the surname Smythe, though this individual's name is spelled correctly (Smith).
To add a User Comment, please do the following:
1.	Click on the Comments and Corrections link from the individual's record page
2.	Click the Add a Comment link on the next page
3.	Fill in the Subject field with a brief description, such as "Other Family of
John Smith in SSDI"
4.	Fill in the Comment field with information you wish to include as your comment
5.	Fill in the Source field if you have a reference that verifies the information you provide
6.	Indicate your Comment Type as Additional Detail, Contradiction, Question, or Link
7.	Click the Post comment button
Report an error
While some of the above submissions may be classified as errors, those issues you find that cannot be submitted with the above two options (such as an unreadable image, linking to an incorrect image, a missing page, etc.) should be submitted via this third choice. There are two methods for submitting this type of report.
Reporting an Index error
1.	Click on the Comments and Corrections link from the individual's record page
2.	Click the Report an Error link on the next page
3.	Choose the appropriate issue from the Problem type drop-down menu
4.	Enter information in the Description box that better specifies the steps you took to duplicate this error, the text of any error message you may have received, etc.
5.	Click the Submit button to post your error report
Reporting an Image Error
1.	Go to the image where the error occurs, if possible*
2.	Above the image on the right half of the screen, click on the link labeled Having problems viewing this image?
3.	Fill out the form provided, as indicated in Steps 3-5 (for Reporting an Index Error)
* If you cannot get to the image, you can either try to report the error as an Index Error, or you can contact our Member Solutions Department by clicking the Email Ancestry Support tab at the top of this Knowledge Base.
Note: Please understand that fixes to errors on Ancestry are posted firstly in the order of those which affect the greatest number of users, and thereafter in the order in which they are reported. For this reason, fixes for some errors may take longer than others to be posted. We appreciate your patience.

If there is anything else with which we might assist you, please let us know.

Kimberly
Member Solutions
Ancestry.com
http://ancestry.custhelp.com/

Customer (Rick Frederick)	10/27/2007 11:36 AM
Dear Folks: For over a year now I have attempted to call you the attention of Ancestry.com the serious errors in its North Carolina Birth Index.
Nancy Mruph(e)y was born 1760 NC. Har father may have been John Murph(e)y b. 1745 NC, died 1825 Sumner Co. TN.

Have any Caswell researchers documented Nimrod McIntosh's wife Nancy Muph(e)y, her siblings or her mother?
I am seeking information on John Murph(e)y's daughters, specifically any living descendants.

The living descendant may be male or female, but their direct maternal line must only include females back to Nancy or one of Nancy and Nimrod's daughters, Phoebe, Celia, Milberry or Nancy.

My mother happens to be a direct descendant form Nancy Murph(e) and her "unknown" mother.

I would like to identify others who descend from the females above through a direct female line, including Parthenia's sisters for the purpose of proving Parthenia's maternal ancestry. If that can be done, I will be able to share information about Nancy's maternal ancestry, including geographic origin with confidence.

Let me know if I can help you in any way.
Gary Violette
Clarksville, TN

Found: Page Family Bible with records-Early to mid 1800s.

I recently came into posession of a bible which I bought at a local thrift store. It's falling apart but within the pages, on the back of the first page of Psalms is listed in quill pen writing, the history of a family with the surname Page. Also contained in the bible are random papers, including an obituary:

Marie, the 5 year old daughter od Mr and Mrs W.S. Page of Cool Springs, died yesterday afternoon after an ilness with diptheria...

the obit. goes on to say Marie was Mr. and Mrs. Page's only daugher, and will be buried at Fifth Creek church...

If anyone is looking for any of this information regarding this family, or knows anything about them and would be so kind as to send it my way, it would be much appreciated. It would be ideal if I could find direct family who would like to have the bible, but if that is not possible, I would like to know more about this family and why such an important part of thier history was in a thirft store for a quarter.

Full list from the page before Psalms-

Stephen Page married Elizabeth on 28? January 1832
Their children:
Frances Page was born 11th of November 1832
James Bentley Page was born 11th of February 1835
Bedford Jackson Page was born Sept? 18th of 1836
William Whitehead Page was born 17th Novemebr 1838
Elizabeth Susan Page was born 25th February, 1840

Also in the bible are old newspaper clippings and personal notes.
Searching for information on the families of Daniel SARGENT and Delpha CARNEY who were married January 3, 1780 in Caswell Co., NC. Daniel was the son of Joseph SARGENT and Ruth RANSOM. Joseph SARGENT died in 1781 in Caswell Co., NC and named Daniel and another child, a daughter named Elizabeth. What happened to Elizabeth SARGENT? Who were Ruth RANSOM's parents? Delpha CARNEY was the daughter of Joseph CARNEY, and I know nothing about him at all. Where was he from? Who was his wife? Did he have children other than Delpha? I am descended from Daniel SARGENT and Delpha CARNEY through their daughter, Polly SARGENT, but I am also interested in their other children. I haven't been researching this family long, but I will gladly share whatever I have.

Thomas Benton Jeffreys/Jeffries

I'm looking for information on Thomas Benton Jeffreys/Jeffries born July 4, 1827 in Halifax,VA. His father is listing on his death certificate as Thomas Jeffreys from VA and his mother looks to be Eliza or Elizabeth Cary or Carey also from VA. Other records show the family being from North Carolina originally and not Virginia. Thoma Benton Jeffries died March 6, 1922 in Uniontown Kentucky where he moved his family after serving in the Civil War in 1867.

Any information or the smallest detail would be most appreciative! Please email directly at:
angela.delossantos@gmail.com

Thank you
