Notes From John Fox

WILLIAM Oakley WAS FATHER TO ELIZABETH Oakley
WHO MARRIED ANOTHER ANCESTRAL UNCLE, SAMUEL WELLS; THEY SETTLED INTO
CALDWELL COUNTY, NC. THIS DOES SHOW THAT YOUR SAMUEL LIVED IN THE SAME
COMMUNITY AS THE Wells AND THE OAKLEYS.

MILES Wells IS THE FATHER OF STEPHEN AND
SAMUEL Wells. STEPHEN Wells MARRIED SARAH Williams IN ORANGE COUNTY, NC
IN 1802. THE Wells LIVED IN Person County AT IT'S SOUTHWESTERN CORNER
WHERE IT INTERSECTED WITH CASWELL AND ORANGE COUNTIES. EITHER THE
WILLIAMS FAMIMY LIVED IN ORANGE, OR THEY FOUND IT MORE CONVENIENT TO
GET THEIR MARRIAGE BOND AT THE ORANGE COURTHOUSE IN HILLSBOROUGH, WHICH
WAS ABOUT AS CLOSE AS GOING TO Person County COURTHOUSE FURTHEREAST.

pg. 133 Samuel Williams to Peggy Inscore of Granville Co., for $133
1/3 for 133 1/3 acres on Cubb Creek adj. William Oakley

16 Sept. 1815 THE SALE OF THIS LAND TO SOMEONE LIVING IN GRANVILLE
MAY STRENTHEN THE ARGUMENT THAT THE Williams LIVED IN GRANVILLE PRIOR
TO PERSON. MY Wells FAMILY ALSO LIVED IN GRANVILLE BEFORE SETTLING
INTO CASWELL/PERSON. SAMUEL Wells AND ELIZABETH Oakley WERE MARRIED IN
GRANVILLE IN 1794. THIS MEANS THAT THE Oakley FAMILY ALSO MIGRATED FROM
GRANVILLE TO PERSON. IT MIGHT BE WISE TO CHECK OUT THE LOCATIONS OF
THESE FAMILIES IN GRANVILLE AND SEE IF THEY WERE NEIGHBORS, AND PERHAPS
KINSMEN. I KNOW THAT THE Miles Wells FAMILY AND WILLIAM Oakley FAMILY
WERE NEIGHBORS IN GRANVILLE, AS WELL AS IN PERSON.

SOMETHING WHICH MAY NOT HAVE ANY BEARINGS AT ALL ON YOUR FAMILY, IS THE
FACT THAT THE Wells FAMILY WERE DESCENDED FROM A THOMAS Roberts OF
ELIZABETH CITY COUNTY, VA, THROUGH HIS DAUGHTER ELIZABETH Roberts WHO
MARRIED A Wells ANCESTOR AS HER SECOND HUSBAND. ALL OF HER CHILDREN
WERE OF THIS SECOND MARRIAGE.

Dear Nancy,

I spent a couple hours looking into one Samuel Williams and his wife Sarah. Yolanda Reid came over and gave me a great deal of help or I would not have made much progress.

Samuel Williams died September 30th 1841 and he made his will (it was a verbal will told to his family members) the day before or September 29th 1841 (Ro. Co. Will Book 11 page 194) (Will book 11 page 263) (inventory on pages 109-111 Will book 11). Joseph Gunn and William Martin were involved and appeared in open Court to testify that the will was legit (January session of 1842 around the 2nd or 3rd) Robertson County, TN.

During all our search we couldn't pen point where he was living. Bennett and Solomon lived with Sarah and three daughters are mentioned as living with them with several already married and living on their own.

Sarah Williams born in N C is listed as being 70 in the 1850 census with one son and three daughters still living with her (all were born in N C) The Williams Family or at least Samuel and Sarah must have arrived in Robertson County just shortly before he died.

In 1858 Sarah Williams and three or four of her children are living on the land (near Cedar Hill) owned by Jesse Williams of Montgomery, AL (as you know he died that year and had 4 or so slaves). Jesse's land in Robertson County was in the 8th district not too far from a Fyke Family (I believe it was part of the 640 acre land grant of Mabkin Fyke) and the property called for Spring Creek of Sulfur Fork putting the land on one corner somewhere near Cedar Hill (8th district). Jeremiah Batts lived a short distance from Sarah Williams and I know he owned the land along Kinney's Road just out of Cedar Hill.

We couldn't find a tombstone listed in any of the Cemetery books meaning that the cemetery hasn't been mapped or they have fieldstones or someone has destroyed the Williams cemetery. We did find the Cemetery listed near Scott Richards (Beanie's son) Richards Road and it has a few Williams Family members in it a Henry without a date. I believe it also had at least one fieldstone.

I can't find Samuel Williams buying land in Robertson County it is possible that I overlooked something.

I found a Jesse Williams living on the KY TN line (about 1841 or so) near Keysburg, KY selling land and slaves to Drewery Bell (250 acres). I'm just wondering if this is the same Jesse Williams that died in Montgomery AL. in 1858.

In 1850 Sarah Williams had the following children living with her, Liddy, Parthenia, Mary and Solomon Williams.

In Will book 12 page 338 David Williams is administrator of the estate of Jesse Williams (of AL), but David must have died or gave it up, because James M. Gunn takes over in Will book 12 page 434. There were some lawsuits involved with this later will of Jesse
