Pat,
I know this is a long shot, as I am just seeing this thread while searching for some info on my grandmother's family. I am the grandaughter of Nana Hubbard Twiford. She was Charles Martin Hubbard's daughter, and a sister of Spence Hubbard. There were other brothers and sisters and I do have a little bit of information on them. I am trying to find information on the Hubbard family. Do you have any resources by chance?

Looking for information on Evan Forbes, b. about 1796. He was the son of Isaac and Polly Forbes. I am trying to find if this Evan m. Mary Lurry, b. about 1792. In the 1850 Camden census there is an Evan and Mary who had children Walter, Isaac, Evan Jr, Tully, and Elizabeth. The also had an older son, Jacob who was b. about 1817.I believe this was probably Mary Lurry but need verification.
Any help will be appreciated.

The previous message concerned McPhersons after 1850 for which marriage records survive...very few of the marriage bonds survive from the pre-1850 time.
The only online documentation which I know of is the estate records which are found at www.familysearch.org - check out all of the McPhersons in both Pasquotank and Camden as both had McPhersons. (Check out Taylor and Gregorys as well)

Taylor, Gregory and McPherson are all Camden and Pasquotank names, so you are probably in the right area. I didn't find a will for a Joseph in Pasquotank and wills in Camden before 1822 didn't survive, so the answer (if not in estate records) will probably be in land records. I see in Camden County (from "Kinsfolk of Camden County" where Joseph and Jonathan sold land together as if it were inherited in 1803. Joseph Jr and Joshua were witnesses. I'm sure there are many instances in Pasquotank records listing them together pre-1777. I didn't see them owning land together in Brayton's deed abstracts for Pasquotank 1750-1770 but I did see Joseph and Joshua both witnessing the same deed several times. Bjorkman in her book for Pasquotank deeds of 1700-1751 has Joseph and Moses both witnessing the same deeds. She also had Thomas Lewis of Pasquotank and Daniel McPherson of Norfolk County (VA) selling land to Joseph McPherson of Pasquotank on the NE side of the river (later Camden County) in 1747 ...Moses witnessed that as well

I'm associated with the Family Research Society of Northeastern NC and you can email the society (me) at frsnnc2@hotmail.com --- I WOULD LOVE to have a copy of that hand-written bio which you mentioned.

The only other method of getting the records would be on microfilm through inter-library loan. The 1700-1751 and the 1750-1770 abstracts are the only abstracted deeds I know of for Pasquotank.

Sharon Gable

Are there any online resources that would provide that documentation? It will likely be several years or more before I can come down to Elizabeth City.

I'm descended from Joseph Macpherson (m. Mary Taylor) and his father Joseph (m. Charity Gregory). The father supposedly had three brothers - John, Joshua, and Dempsey. Their father may also have been named Joseph (m. Lydia ?), but I am not sure of that.

Thank you for any online resources that may be available.

Most McPherson's came from Norfolk County VA. They settled in the area of the Northwest River and gradually moved south into present day Camden County, but you have several generations to go before you hit VA McPhersons.
Charles Tillett McPherson is the son of Dennis Oscar McPherson and Mary Jackson Tillett. The info on his kids is found in NC Bible Records by Spence and Shannonhouse. They also document Dennis' parents as Benjamin Franklin McPherson and Ann Carter Ferebee.

The McPhersons lived in Norfolk County and then came down into the upper part of Camden County. You can view the NC Bible Record book at the Family Research Society of NE NC (in Elizabeth City) or at the public library there.

You can buy the book at the same place you purchsaed WB C - the Family Research Society of NENC :-) The web site is http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~ncfrsnnc/

It's possible that the Abner listed on page 31 is your Abner - there really isn't enough info to tell. There were multiple Abner Sawyers at that time. Something in the deeds might answer your question. You can request copies of deeds from the Register of Deeds in Camden County or get the microfilm through Inter-library loan so you can check a number of deeds.

I found an Abner Sawyer in "Camden County NC Extant Tax Records 1782-1890) - but only one listing. He was taxed for 100 acres of land and one white poll (which would have been him) in 1815. The tax was listed under Isaac Gregory who had 160 acres and no polls as if Isaac Gregory paid the tax for Abner (if this is the right Abner). Also note there were multiple Isaac Gregorys.

There were no formal adoptions back then....you are talking about a man born ca 1790s - we were barely Americans then. The words adopted and alias together are bothering. Alias often means that Gregory was her maiden name, but it can also mean illigitimate. You also need to consider that there were multuiple Evan Sawyers at this time frame. Your best bet would be determining how this Abner got 100 acres, but I'd first find out how much land was divided among his children and where it was located to determine if this Abner and the one who left land which was divided between his children are the same tract of land - not easy, and definitely not online or abstracted any where.

The book I referenced called Kinsfolk only list deeds in which the author saw relationships - not all deeds.

You can email the Family Research Society of NE NC at frsnnc2@hotmail.com - I answer questions for people there and try and help with NE NC questions.
Sharon Rea Gable

Thank you! Thank you for solving the mystery! I had wondered if Abner D was their father. His time of death matched up (Dec 1849) and also, my Evan had named his first son Abner D. I had purchased the Camden County NC Will Book C hoping to find a will for him there, but no luck. Where would I be able to find the books you referenced?

Now I have a new mystery. In the Will Book C, pages 30 & 31 there is listed a will of Evan Dozier. One of the items is to his adopted son Abner Sawyer, son of Aliff Sawyer alias Aliff Gregory. Without the middle initial, I am uncertain if this is my Abner but do find it interesting that Abner named one of his children Evan. So is it my guy? Not sure. Do you know if there were any kind of adoption records back then? Also, I believe Aliff to be his mother, but would her maiden name be Gregory or does that mean she married a second time?

Thanks for any light you can shed on this.

Bethany Sawyer Sellers

I'm not related to the Sawyers but I can shed some light on the family.
Camden County Deed Book Z pages 380 and 381 have a deed division in 1852. The heirs of Abner D. Sawyer are listed as James (adult), Penelope (adult), William, Evin and Fany (all infants). I know this disagrees with the census which lists William as an adult, but it could just be a mistake on the part of the transcriber. I got the data from "Kinsfolk of Camden County Deed Books Vol 1" by Elizabeth Jones

I have been stumped for many years trying to trace back further than my 2nd great grandfather, Evan Sawyer, in my Sawyer line.

The earliest info I can find is in the 1850 census for Camden County as follows..

Will Sawyer - age 32, abt 1818
Lydia Sawyer - age 58, abt 1792
Fanny Sawyer - age 27, abt 1823
Penelope Sawyer - age 25, abt 1825
James Sawyer - age 21, abt 1829
Evan Sawyer - age 17, abt 1831

I can only guess that Will, Fanny, Penelope, James and Evan are siblings and that Lydia is possibly their mother.

My Evan Sawyer goes on to marry Martha Upton abt. 1860. Last census I find him in is 1900. Cannot find the family in the 1910 census and by 1920, Martha Upton Sawyer shows up as widowed. They had at least eight children with some of them staying in NC and others going north to VA:

1) Abner D Sawyer - b. 1861 - m. 1884 Obania Midgette
2) Thomas Sawyer - b. 1862 - m. 1890 Nancy Brown
3) John James Sawyer - b. 1865 - m. 1897 Fannie Lenora Griffin
4) Elizabeth "Bettie" Sawyer - b. 1868 - m. 1) Thomas Branson Berry 2) Caleb Staples Forbes
5) Quinton Sawyer - b. 1873
6) Emma "Lula" Sawyer - b. 1874 - m. 1896 Robert W Anderson
7) William "Willie/Billie" Sawyer - b. 1879 - m. 1) Ora L ??? and 2) ???
8) Burwell Everett Sawyer - b. 1882 - m. 1910 Lucy Edith Davis

Would love to hear from anyone who has connections to this family or who can help me in my search to find Evan Sawyer's parents.
Although it doesn't totally answer your question, the Elizabeth City newspaper "The Economist" had an notice in 19 Jun 1903 issue which stated "Remarkable Negro Dead - Rev. Zion H. Berry died at his home near Mt. Hermon Church in Pasquotank County last Sunday AM - 73 years old. He was the son of a white woman from Camden County.

The abstracter (Greg Williams) noted that it was a good story.

I think you need to post this on the Pasquotank County board rather than the Camden County board. There were a number of Noah McPhersons in Camden County as it was a very popular name, but I haven't seen an Alston. In looking at the 1850 census Alston is in Pasquotank County and owns land.
In looking at Camden County wills there's isn't a Noah in the 1840s or an Alston in 1854. There is however those names and those dates in Pasquotank County wills. I don't know if the McPhersons in the two counties are related or not, but the Camden County McPhersons first settled along the Northwest River in Norfolk County VA and then moved down into Camden and Currituck Counties in NC.
And if he died in 1840 he definitely didn't sign a deed in 1844 - again Noah McPherson is a very common name in NE NC.

My ancestor Archibald Wilkins married Mourning Smith between 1826 and 1834. My information comes mainly from land records in Camden County. See the North Carolina, Camden County Deeds P-R, Book P pages 430 and 431. There is land of James Smith, deceased, divided amongst the legal heirs with the following Smith names: Mourning, Elizabeth, Benj A., William, Dorcas, James , James C., and two aunts Hannah and Polly. Does anyone know the relationship of these heirs ? I am at a brick wall as to who Mourning Smiths' parents and siblings are.
You need to be a little more specific in the cemetery you are looking for. County cemeteries are known by whatever the local people want to call them. "Camden County Cemeteries Vol II" by Wesner lists a Pearce & Old cemetery on the north side of Edney Dr in the edge of the woods 2/10s of a mile from Muddy Road, a Pearce Cemetery on the south side of Bunker Hill Road across from Pudding Ridge Road and a Pearce & Tatum Cemetery on the north side of Bunker Hill Rd 1/10 of a mile from Old Swamp Road.

County cemeteries do not have addresses. She included GPS data once you identify which cemetery you need. Photos I can't help with.
Sharon Gable

The Family Research Society of Northeastern NC would love to have a copy of the Bible records for Jacob and his family. You can email it to me at frsnnc2@hotmail.com or mail it to FRS PO Box 1425 Elizabeth City NC 27906-1425.

I'm not related to the Needhams, but I can give you some info from Camden books.....your John b 1811 married Ann Eliza Leary on 22 Dec 1875 in Shiloh. John listed his parents as Bailey & Dinah Needham (I abstracted the marriages for a marriage book so the info is from the license). He listed his age as 64 and Ann Eliza was 26. She was the dau of John and Susan Leary.
When Ferebee married Sarah Cartwight 6 Sep 1853 the marriage bond did not require parents or ages - so there isn't any. Susan Bray age 50 married Mark Gregory 22 Dec 1887 in Shiloh. He was 40 the son of Nathan and Meddy. Her parents were only listed as Bailey Needham so it was obviously a second marriage for her. All marriages records didn't survive for Camden County.

Dinah Needham, wife of Bailey, was listed as the heir of Daniel Bray in a deed division in 1828 DB T:155-156 - relationship not listd of course. Other heirs in that same deed division were Polly Bray, Hester Bray, Lydia Bray, Betsey (wife of Frederick Kenedy), Nancy (wife of Nicholas Burgess) and Jacob Harrison. This info is from the book "Kinsfolk of Camden County Vol 1"

Sharon Gable

Yes I think you are right about the names, being the same graveyard. I have tried attaching a file of the graveyard names to this message, but no luck, which caused my delay answering your message. The earliest grave listed is for a Maggie Sawyer died 3 Sept. 1865 to give you some idea of the period of burials. I also have a history of the Milford Plantation. It was typed on an old typewriter 4 pages and is a very poor copy, but there is information about deed, liens, wills, etc on this property starting with a Capt. Thomas Relfe in 1696 (including details of Charles Grice, mortgages, etc)coming forward to the owners of record in the 1960's. If you are interested in either or both of the 2 items, send me an email address and I will send it to you or if you have another idea let me know. Best I can do. Ed

Jacob Needham of Camden North Carolina & Family

I am looking for information on the Needham family of Camden Co. NC pre 1850 There were a few so let me explain.

I am a descendant of Jacob Needham b.1838 His line moved to California between 1870-1880. Several of his brothers and sisters stayed out in Camden, NC. His mother's name was Dinah (unknown maiden name/not Bray), Father deceased before 1850 census but after 1848.

I do not believe it is Dinah Bray because there is no sources or evidence to prove it. (It is all hear-say over ancestry that Dinah Bray married Bailey Needham and that is the same Dinah, mother to Jacob & his brother John that married Lydia. There are no sources to back this up and the dates are wrong). I call this the "Magic Bailey Theory" Let me explain.

Bailey Needham born from the Thomas Needham line goes roughly like this -
Thomas Needham SR. b.1622 England d.1690 Elizabeth City VA
Thomas Needham JR. b.1675 Elizabeth City VA d.1740 Pasquotank NC
Thomas Needham III b.1710 Elizabeth City VA d.1746 Pasquotank NC
BAILEY NEEDHAM b.1740 Camden NC d.??

Now look at the Dinah born Needhams. Soloman was born 1849 according to the 1850 Census. So that means Bailey (@ 108) was still having sex! I think not. Older men (60+) did marry 20 year old women back then but come on! There could be a generation or 2 missing which would connect Bailey Needham to the Dinah Needham in the 1850 census. But without proof, your assumptions are short-sided. There are other Bailey Needhams but again, none that fit the timeline according to the 1850 census. I have looked at this for sometime and found nothing that connects that Bailey & my Dinah Needham. I am convinced that they are 2 separate Needham line. Which brings us to now... If someone has proof, please show me and I will eat my words! :)

I am looking for facts that can be verified! If you have info on the following people I appreciate some help. Please give your sources also that would connect.

Dinah Needham b.1791 married ?? Needham in ??
Children: John b.1811, Nancy b.1830?, Ferebee b.1827, Susan b.1832, Jacob b.1838, Soloman b.1849 all born in Camden NC

Also, If anyone is interested, I inherited Jacob Needhams family bible which came with him from NC to California. I can get you the information within it upon request. Unfortunately, the family history starts with his marriage and children and not his parents :(

I have noticed that this same cemetery near Camden, NC goes by several different names: Milford Cemetery, Sawyer Cemetery, Shipyard Cemetery, but I believe they are all the same cemetery nearby the Grice House, aka Milford House and Relfe-Grice-Sawyer House located at 154 Shipyard Road. I am interested in the list of the people buried at this cemetery. Can you send me what you have? My main area of research is the Charles Grice who originally built it and his wife (wives) and descendants.
I also noticed that the Grice-Fearing house in Elizabeth City, NC was built by a Grice, but I have seen conflicting information as to whether it was built by Charles Grice or Francis Grice. I have found detailed information on the internet showing both. Any further info would be appreciated

Thank you for your offer but that would put a big
burden on you. My great, great, great grandfather
was John Gregory and there was a tremendous number
of Gregorys in Camden County; to add to that, I
do not know who his father was and I do not know
if John would have been mentioned as he ran away
from home at an early age. So I will have to go
through every Gregory unless there is an index of
those with wills and those mentioned in the wills.
John was born in 1793 and he ran away because of a
dis-agreement with his father so I know the father
would have been alive after 1800 (I est. John ran
away when he was 10 or older) but who or when, I
have no idea.

Thank you for the info, I will look at the source
you named both on-line and LDS.

Thanks for the offer, it is appreciated especially
since John's parents have been a brick wall for many
years.

Karl MacEachron

Some will prior to 1822 can be found in NC State Archives. Is there anyone in particular you are looking for? If so I will see if they have.

James Bass - Mulatto Slave?

Hello ~

I am trying to find out what information there might be out there on a James Bass' family prior to the Civil War and/or 1860's. James, his wife Alcia (Alsey, Alsie, Alcey) and there children left North Carolina, prior to 1860 and moved to Xenia, Greene County, Ohio, then to New Garden Twp., Wayne County, Indiana (just north of Fountain City, Indiana, where the underground railroad ended at Levi Coffin's house), then to Van Buren County, Michigan, where they spent the rest of there lives. They are listed as Mulatto in the 1850 U.S. Census for Camden County, NC. So I am trying to find out what information I can on there life in Camden County, NC. I believe I found some of them listed in a Bible book from 1858-1860, having been a part of the McBride Church near South Mills. I think James' mother was Polly Bass, but I cannot find any husband or father listed.

How can I found out if they were free slaves? Were they Mulatto because their fathers were the Masters (slave owners)? Or, maybe they were white and Indian, rather then white and black. Would there be any documentation available out there, that would give me any information about them in Camden County, NC?

Any help or suggestions would be most appreciated!

Thank you in advance ~ Kris

I maintain several web sites concerning the Civil War in northeastern NC, including Camden County Troops and the Skirmishes at Sandy Hook and Indiantown. I live in Elizabeth City and teach in Camden County. Check out http://rblong.net/index.htm for a listing of the sites. I can put you in contact with several people that had great-grandfathers in the 68th NC Co. B.

I'm curious if you have any Bailey names from Pasquotank in your tree. I'm descendant from Alonzo Bailey, who was born to a John Anderson and Nancy (Bundy) Bailey in Pasquotank in 1873. Alonzo's son (my grandfather) was raised by an aunt and uncle named Spence after Alonzo's wife passed away. My grandfather legally changed his name to Spence when he got married to my grandmother, and Spence is my maiden name. I know it's not a solid link, but I've been looking for ancestors of Alonzo Bailey in Pasquotank, and saw your query for Spences, so I thought I'd ask. Thanks so much!
