When you are researching prior to the 1850 census you need to look at tax records, road orders and deeds to figure out where your ancestors actually lived. I work with a few researchers who deed map Wilkes and have all our ancestors deed mapped out. We know who sold land to who. Who are immediate neighbors were. The land was different back then, than it is today. Unfortunately Burke County Deeds were destroyed so we cant deed map. We have to rely on road orders, tax records and transcriptions of deeds.
