I'm not sure if you are still looking for this information, but I know of several Galloways who were river pilots in the area.

Thomas Galloway, Sr. (b/ bef 1712-1764) was a river pilot in the area. In 1733, he married Anne Wingwood / Winegood / Winigood (her name is found variously as all three). They were married in Charleston, SC and I suspect some piloting business took him there or else, he eventually ended upriver in New Hanover Co, NC. (He was in New Hanover by 1754 as he was in the militia).

In 1764, he died leaving orphans: Catherine, Thomas, Matthew & Sarah. He is presumed to be the father of two older Galloway boys; a John and a William. The children's guardians were a William Morris and a Thomas Price.

John (ca 1735-1788) married Sarah Bell and he was a river pilot. His son, Alfred b/1775 m/Elizabeth Gleason, was also a river pilot. (They married in Charleston & I assume that was during a piloting stint of some sort).

Thomas Jr. (ca 1748-1780) was also a river pilot. He is believed to have married a Priscilla who mater married a man named Church. His son, Robert (ca 1770-1821, Warren Co, MS) was also a pilot.

William (bet 1746-1782), son of Thomas Sr., married Sarah Swain. Her presumed grandfather, Thomas Corbet was a pilot. There was a Jonathan Swain or Swann who was also a pilot. He may have been her father.

Matthew Galloway, son of Thomas Sr. is believed to be my ancestor. If true, he was b/1759 d/1824 in GA. His occupation is not known but I have wondered if he, too, might have been a pilot. But other than the family business aspect, I have nothing to indicate that might be true.

One thing is certain; that MY (confirmed) Matthew Galloway took out some kind of bond ca 1780/1781, presumably Chatham Co, NC. The copy was once in his family Bible. Descendants have suspected it was a military / jail bond & family legend has it he was captured in the Rev War (at Charleston or Camden) & "bought his way to freedom," but another branch says he was unable to come up with the money and he lost all his property. In any case, this bond was to secure 50 pounds & it was signed by 5 other men. One of these was Amaziah Joslin (Jocelyn) who was also a pilot (& privateer & "Prize Master") and who was in New Hanover by 1789.

It seems to have been a family business! I'd love anything you may have found to date on any of these men or if you find anything. I do have some additional information on Amaziah Jocelin and a few dates & places for the others.
I'd also love to find out if Matthew was also a pilot.

thanks
