I am interested in John Lassiter. Decide Hall was my grandfathers sibling. Also I see where Julie Hall was married to John E Lassiter. Julie Hall Lassiter was Decie's sister. I have some info on them, a copy of Julie' s marriage license and on the rest of the Halls. My grandmother Lougenia Harrell was married to John Wesley Hall, brother do Decie and Julie. Please contact me at fayebillwallace01@yahoo.com

Hello,

Sarah, daughter of May you mentioned in your post, is my grandmother and has been just elusive for me as Bessie has been for you. I believe she is actually Mary, possibly Mary Cross, since her daughters full names were Sallie Mae Cross and Sarah Lee Cross. Do you know any more about May/Mary and her daughters? My tree stops cold at her and you're the first person I've seen mention them.
Thank you,
Crystal

From my understanding my grandmother Mamie Lee Hoggard was from Bertie, North Carolina. She died here in Baltimore, md. Her parents are Caupell Hoggard and Elle Lee Jenkins.
My father is Earl Jack Hoggard. My mother told me my father was adopted by Mamie Lee Hoggard. If anyone has info on my father or grandmother could you please share. My last name is hoggard and I always hated it because of my dead beat dad. But as I find more info on the name Hoggard I am more proud to have the name. Even though mamie may be my adoptive grandmother I still have a place for her because she may have adopted my father. And I feel bad for all the bad things my father put her through. She passed oct 5th 2002 and was buried in middle river maryland. I don't have a way to contact my father, and there is so many questions I have. If anyone had info on my father or grandmother, or hoggard relatives in general. Please share. Thank you

Katie's mother's name was Bessie C. Lassiter. she was born about 1893 and died Oct. 4 1915 from TB pulmary. She was buried in Beaver Hill Cemetary. She was tyhe daughter of John E. Lassiter and Julia W Hall, John H Lassiter's first wife's sister. John E was John H's uncle. John H's parents was James Frank Lassiter and Lavenia Emily Hawkins. James's father was Joel Ace LAssiter and Mary E LAssiter, called Hastey. Julia Hall's parents were James W. Hall and Elizabeth (Betty) Smith. I am not 100% sure of her parents but I have some guesses.

Tudor Family in Early Bertie County

I need the help of Bertie County genealogists. I am trying to trace James, Henry, and Anne Tudor who were located in early Bertie County.

James is first mentioned in Albermarle, NC:

Albemarle County:
1729-32. James Tuder paid quit rents to his majesty the king, 29 Sep 1729 to Mar 1732 for 100 acres of land (N. C. Colonial Records, book 22, Pg 243). See Bertie County.

He then bought land in Bertie:

(1) 1732, 29 Nov. Henry Jernigan of Nansemond Co., Va to James Tudor 11/29/1732 10 lbs
for 100A at Villiage Swamp adj John Williams land formerly granted Geo.
Stevenson for 640A (pat) dtd 8/1728 wit: Needham Bryan, Theophilus Williams. (Village Swamp is where today Village Gate is located in Bertie County; it is south of Woodville on route 11.)
(2) 1735, 29 Nov. D:139. Henry Jernagan of Nansemond in VA, planter, to James Tudor of Bertie. For [£10?], 100 acres patented as 140 acres by George Stevenson 8 Aug 1728, adj John Williams Villige Swamp. Including improvements. /s/ Henry Jernagan & a seal. W: Needham Bryan, Theophilus Williams. Acknowledged. (The Jernigan Connection Newsleter).
(3) The 1736 will of Henry Jernigan identifies his land as joining James Tudor.

Anne Tudor is also mentioned in Bertie in 1735:

1736, 7 Jan. Deed Abstract: Anne Tudor, widow of Thomas Raysens. Witnesses: William Theopilus, John Howard, and Henry Barker.

Henry is mentioned several times in Bertie:

1732, 19 Mar: Will of Humphrey Morrell. Grandsons: JOSEPH and JOHN PEARS. Daughter and Executrix: ELIZABETH WATS. Mother: ELIZABETH MORREL. Witnesses: WILLIAM SIMES, ANN BURK, HENRY TUDOR. No probate.
1735 H Tudar witness to a land gift.
1736. Will of John Allen. 1736, Jan 8. August Court, 1736. Sons: WILLIAM and RICHARD. Daughters: CATHRINE and MARGARET ALLIN. Wife and Executrix: ELIZABETH. Witnesses: THOMAS MANDEN, ISAAC RICKS and HENRY TUDOR. Clerk of the Court: JNO. WYNNS.
1736 Will of Thomas Mandue 17 April. Henry Tudor witness to will.

I cannot find James, Henry, or Anne Tudor after 1736. I believe Henry may have gone back to Virginia to Surry/Sussex County. Appreciate any help a fellow genealogist can give me.
I'm looking for more information on Thomas Speller, who was married to Mary Ridley, and who was the father of C.B. Speller. I've seen a few people online say this Thomas Speller was descended from Henry Speller and Patience Parris. Can anyone connect the dots for me? Who was Thomas's father? I've seen some references to a Thomas Speller in Bertie, NC, son of Henry, who lived to be 116. I suspect that is an error. Please let me know if anyone has developed a reliable family tree. Thanks!
Zephaniah Wimberley was born 1798 SC according to the 1850 census. He was a shoemaker in Gadsden county, FL with a female Elizabeth that is 20 years his junior born 1820 NC and children:Ezekiel G., Elizabeth, Martha, William, Frances A., Penny, and Amanda. In 1860 he is a farmer in Russell county, AL. Some of his family such as son Ezekiel Wimberley (also a shoemaker) moves to southwest Georgia in Decatur county.
We do not know who Zephaniah's parents are but a DNA test of a Wimberley male showed a very close match with several Cotten males.

Our Wimberley family probably originally came from Virginia or the Carolinas and that would seem to greatly enhance the chance of a connection between Cottens and Wimberleys. We've been told that George Wimberley, whose daughter Zilpha married Amos Cotten, had two other unmarried daughters at the time of his death in 1768. And Maybe one of them had a child out of wedlock with one of the many Cottens in the area and passed on the Wimberley name. There doesn't seem to be any way to make the connection at this point. The similiarity of the names Zilpha and Zephaniah is interesting. There are also many similar names in the Wimberley family including the similarity of the occupation of shoemaking (Ezekiel Wimberley of Bertie county, NC, 1700's)
Ezekiel G. Wimberley married Eliza Ann Chason. Their first born was Georgiann Wimberley, born 1854 in Alabama. Could she be named for her father's father: George and her mother's middle name Ann?? There is the next daughter Elizabeth "Lizzie" born 1858 in Alabama; then a boy Zephaniah born June 1860 Alabama, dies December 1860 Russell county, Alabama. Then 2 more daughters and 5 more sons were born. Comments?

Hello Cousin,
We have no indication that Effie was a Tuscarora Indian, it is noted that she was "married" and had children with Tom Small who was a Tuscarora Indian, and did have two children, Fred and Robert Small. Two of my Great Grandfather's, Plummer Speller half brothers. She did later live with Robert Speller and have children, Plummer, William, Nannie, Lucy, Meta, Frances, John, Annie, Robert and Fate. There is no evidence that the Speller family were large slave owners according to the Census. Henry Speller who is a the original Speller from England had 9 slaves according to the 1790 census. 10 yrs later he had 8. 10 years after that he had 10. We do have pages on Facebook and a family tree on Geni.com
You can contact me at TJ540i@aol.com.

I am also a member of this family. Effie was my gg grandmother. My family accounts have described her as either fully Native American or half-Indian and half-black. She is described as black in the 1880 census. She lived with R.M. Speller, a white man and the child of a large slaveowner and member of NC assembly, Thomas Speller. The 8 children in the household in 1880 are described as "mulatto." Thomas's brother C.B. Speller served as a lieutenant in the Confederate Army, and lived next door, according to the 1880 census, with his all-white family. I would love more information about Effie (called Affie and Anaffatt in my family accounts) and Robert M. Speller and their immediate families.

Did you find a picture? I believe he is my gg grandfather as well. I'm just starting my search but I've learned a bit about him. His brother C(harles) B. Speller served in the CSA, and is buried in the Speller Family Cemetery in Windsor, NC. Their father Thomas Speller was one of the largest slaveowners in the County, owning over 100 slaves. I have located R.M. Speller in 1860 and 1880 censuses. In 1880 census, he is living with Effie Bond, with whom he apparently had 8 children. I welcome more info on Effie and R.M., including pictures.

Ok, talk about a way to connect the dots...

Charity Adkinson/Atkinson/Adkison/Adkisdon/Adkisson is found as head of house in the 1830 and 1840 censuses, living near Stephen Elliott, and by 1850, Charity is living in his household, where she still lives in 1860 and 1870.

Often this would be a parent living with her children. Since Stephen's surname is Elliott, It would seem Charity is likely the mother of Sarah.

I found this record:
Family Data Collection - Births about Elizabeth Adkisson
Name:	Elizabeth Adkisson
Father:	Jordan Adkisson
Mother:	Charity Ezell
Birth Date:	16 Mar 1819
State:	TN

Thus proof that Jordan Adkisson married Charity Ezell.

on ancestry.com, family tree
Raines Beasley Ferrell Purcell
Owner: illunastorm
Has a photo on this tree of the flyleaf of a Bible "given to Jordon by his maternal grandmother, Charity Ezell Atkison." The inscription in handwritting clearly reads, "J.R.Goins his book presented to him by his grandmother Charity Adkison" "This August Thr 20 1876"

Some family trees have J.R. Goins (Jordan Reese Goins) as a son of Andrew Goins and Lucy B. Elliot, however if Lucy B. Elliot is the daughter of Sarah and Stephen Elliott (I don't have documentation of this), that would make J.R. Charity's great-grandson, rather than her grandson.

I lean towards the relationship found in some other family trees that Jordan Reece Goins is probably the son of Isaac Goins and Mary Adkison (Mary Lucy "Polly" Adkison in some trees). Again, I have no documentation for this relationship, but the theory is that Mary Adkison was a daughter of Charity and Jordan Adkison. This would make J.R. Charity's grandson, which fits the Bible inscription.

This establishes the relationship that Charity Ezell married Jordan Adkison, that Charity was likely the mother of Sarah who married Stephen Elliott, And that Charity Ezell-Adkison was the mother of Elizabeth Adkison and probably also the mother of Mary Adkison-Goins.

on ancestry.com, family tree
Jeanetta's O'Brien Family Tree
Owner: Jeanetta511
Has a photo on this tree of a Bible inscription that reads:
"James Ezell
Bourne February 12
1797"
The caption of the photo says:
"Bible belonging to William Alexander Cauthen Posted on internet by Joseph Cauthen (2009 )"
I suspect this is another page of the same Bible previously mentioned that was given to J.R. Goins by his grandmother Charity Adkison.

A William Alexander Cauthen is believed to have married an Elizabeth Adkisson, and they had a son named William Alexander Cauthen (according to various posted family trees). I have so far been unable to document this Adkisson-Cauthen marriage, but since the Bible belonged to a William Alexander Cauthen, this is logical.

So now we know that Charity was Charity Ezell when she married Jordan Adkisson, and that she was related to the Cauthen family who had the Bible with the inscription about James Ezell's birth, and since Charity was at one time an Ezell, with dates and locations, it is logical to conclude that James Ezell was related to Charity Ezell.

I'm still looking for documentation, but the general consensus among most researchers is that James Ezell was Charity's son, and that Sarah who married Stephen Elliott was also an Ezell, rumor being that EZELL was Charity's first husband. When combined with the Maury Co., TN deed conveying land to William Adkison from "John Adkison Steven Elliot and Sarah Elliot his wife, W.A. Cauthen and Elizabeth Cauthen his wife Issac M. Goins and Mary Goins his wife" These conclusions make sense.

This brings us to the following conclusions:
Charity (maiden name unknown) married
1)Mr. Ezell
their children:
James Ezell
Sarah Ezell
2)Jordan Adkisson (and variant spellings)
their children:
Elizabeth Adkisson
John Adkison
Mary Adkison

I am still obviously missing some documentation. I'd love to hear from anyone who can support these conclusions with further documentation.

T.N.

After you've thoroughly triple checked all government, federal, state & local records, documents and data, Fold 3, these message boards and lots of diligent time, effort and posts couldn't hurt. Guion Miller applications & Dawes cards are a huge help to Native American researchers, as well as pensions, wills & family bibles, old diaries and your elderly relatives can also be of help too.

You have to keep checking the Guion Miller applications, as more & more of them are being transcribed daily. One day in the not too distant future, you will be able to use a giant mega search engine specifically designed for Guion Miller applications. Now, you have to decipher the cursive hand writing on them yourself, which can take lots of time, & some names, places and dates are extreemly hard to read, for various reasons.

Good luck

Marshall

Later Census for mid 1800's 40-60 ear show my ggguncle Williams T. Bond at Snowfield. The family Bible states he is buried there. As anyone knows that has been there the cemetery was plowed under by a farmer in the 60-70 time frame. His sister, my ggggrandmother Was Mary E. Bond and married George Harrell. I am totally blocked as to whom their parents were and where they came from. Claudia
