Probably everybody on this list already knows this, but anyway:
The Library of Congress has 3 detailed maps of Bertie County made in 1863. The interesting thing about them is that individual farms are labeled with the owner or tenant! I was able to find my great-great-grandfather John Alexander Outlaw on one of these maps.
If you compare with the 1860 and 1870 censuses you can probably deduce
exactly where your ancestor lived even if they do not appear on the map.

By the way, this page
