Thanks for responding,
I have been tracing a Cannon Gibbs back to NC, to find out where he was born. (b-July 18, 1805) He is buried here in SC.( d-Sept. 19, 1857). I have information on his children.
I was hoping to find his parents in the area where the Hymans were living in Martin or Bertie County, NC. Many others migrated to Marion County from that area including Hymans, and O'Cains/Cains.Cannon arrived in Marion County, SC about 1820 or a little sooner. No record of another Gibbs with him? His name starts showing up on court records about 1820, including his marriage to the widow Hyman.
He married Welthy Hyman, the widow of John Eaton Hyman.
According to research, Cannon Gibbs was only 19 at the time they wed! Being so young, he must have migrated with someone to SC, and I have not found out yet who they were. Many others have researched with no luck on his birth place. One Hyman researcher claims he came from Edenton, NC.
Some think that "Cannon" was just a nickname, so that makes it even harder. I have thought maybe Cannon was his mother's maiden name, but no luck with that theory either.
I have checked with MANY researchers in NC with no clues.
I had thought maybe the Gibbs in Hyde County, NC were his ancestors, but no one in that area has any information on him.
If you run across a Cannon and Gibbs connection PLEASE let me know!
Thanks Again,
Susan in SC
