Being that John & Martha are my gg grandparents, I would love to find the cemetery(s) that contains the remains of their families in Ashe County North Carolina. John & Martha are buried at Williamsport, Kentucky, on the old family farm. The cemetery has been neglected for many years. I did document it for the Johnson County Histocial Society a few years ago. If anyone could assist me I would appreciate it very much. I would like to visit the area this summer. I live in Indiana.

Pond Mountain info TN:

ELK MILL, 4TH CIVIL DISTRICT, CARTER COUNTY.

This is the name of a post office on Elk creek in the southeastern part of .Carter county. It is in the vicinity of the Pond Mountain. During the Civil War, as now,. there were fertile farms along the banks of this stream and in the coves, and the people were reasonably prosperous. As in other sections of the county they were loyal to the Union. Being near the mountain and secluded it was the rendezvous for a large number of refugees during the war. It was the scene of a number of adventures and tragedies.

The following are the names of some of the residents of the vicinity of Elk Mill and near Elk Creek during the time of the war: Richard C. White, Washington White, George Shuffield, John L. Stout, James Whitehead, Isaac and Amos Green, John Stout, John Kinnick, James Hately, Granville W. Stout, Columbus Wolf, George Blevins, John Cable, William Lewis, Thomas Whitehead and John C. Shuffield.

The women in this locality whose names we give were called upon to witness some revolting tragedies and to perform many acts of kindness and pass many sleepless nights and toilsome days feeding the helpless wanderers. from home, administering to the sick or wounded, secreting the hunted and burying the dead. Women and aged men performed these offices of humanity with love and tenderness, regardless of the toil and sacrifice it cost them. While we cannot stop to point out each act of humanity or patriotic and Christian duty, each performed her part nobly. They were Elizabeth Cable, Elizabeth Shuffield, Helen Stout, Katie Whitehead, Mary Green, Julia Green, Elizabeth White, Elizabeth Stout, Emma Hately, Mary Kinnick, Sabry White, Eliza Shuffield and others, no doubt, whose names we have failed to obtain and whom we would be glad to place on record. This section of country was a favorite retreat for men from Carter and Johnson counties and from the nearby States of Virginia and North Carolina. Men escaping from Saulsbury prison and recruiting officers and conscripts hard pressed by soldiers and Indians took shelter in the Pond Mountain and depended on these people for supplies.

http://books.google.com/books?pg=PA384&lpg=PA384&dq=...

the video is nice BUT there is nothing, absolutely NOTHING like standing on the top of Pond Mountain in Whitetop va or on the hill where the Whitetop Mt. Cemetary (Miller Cem) is. the views are breathtaking and hold a particular association of mine; my mother, Juanita Hash, along with her 10 siblings, was born and raised in Whitetop to the right of the present day train station museum. even though whitetop is not my home, it always feels like i'm "home" when i go there to visit.

i'm surprised to read your query this morning. William and evaline Blevins Miller were MY gg grandparents!! my grandmother was Almeda "Minnie" Ellen Miller Hash. They are all three buried in Whitetop Mt Cemetary along with Marion Miller and other Millers and Hashes. who was your husbands father?

William Miller built and owned the Whitetop Hotel. both he and marion were very successful businessmen in their time.
If you can get your hands on the book written by Danny Miller- "Miller's Of Ashe County", he outlines the lineage. you cannot buy the book now but the Ashe Co. library in West Jefferson has copies.
good luck to you.

I saw your 2006 posting on Solomon Parsons Jr. I would be most interested in the contents of the estate papers of Solomon Sr as I am also descended from him. I have also been looking for a male Parsons who is descended from William and Mary (Polly) Craig Parsons to do the y-dna test which I would be willing to pay for if they can prove descent from William and Polly or one of their children. I had my uncle and my first cousin tested and while they match each other, they do not match any other Parsons who has been tested. Have none of Wm and Polly's numerous descendents been tested or was ther esome other "event"? Thank you so much for any info you can share about the estate of Solomon.

Thank you for your posting.

I note this homeplace is near Hwy 88--which intersects with US 221 (which journeys southward to Spartanburg SC near where Delilah's brother Hardy Jones GILREATH located--in Greenville).

Do you have any theories as to how Delilah GILREATH met and married Charles McCOY? (Any idea as to his trade or how he earned his living? Were they farmers? planters?)

By family tradition, Hardy was in SC working as a clerk in the SC Bank. Later, he was a road commissioner. He partnered with Simeon or Sion STILES (later seen as STYLES) in a mill--formerly Blackman LIGON's. He's one of the trustees 1830's when organizing a Methodist Church.

I've wondered if the McCOY family was also involved in transportation or commerce. Do you know with which religion they were affiliated there in Ashe Co NC? Their church?

Just to clarify, whose homeplace was on Big Laurel Road near Creston NC?

Have you noted any association with PITTMAN or McKENZIE families?

Any comments will be greatly appreciated.

Hello Nora,
For many years I researched the SHUMATE line only to find out later that a serious mistake had been made on my grandfather's death certificate.
His mother was listed as Roseanna Shumate. Later, with the help of MR. McNeil in Wilkes County, I discovered that her name was NOT SHUMATE, rather, it was SHOEMAKER.
Since that time, I have found her family, but not with proof, who her parents were or where she and my grandfather, Windsor Mason died and are buried.
tom
tcheek5682@aol.com

Hi,

I am descended from Frances Shumate and George Whitfield Smoot. They were my gggg grandparents. I've done a lot of research on the Smoot family and found out that George Whitfield Smoot moved to Wilkes Co., NC around 1818 about the time my ggg grandfather Gabriel Smoot was born after the tannery that George started in VA failed. I was curious how long the Shumate family lived in the Wilkes Co. area and whether Samuel Shumate and Ann Peppers (Frances' parents) were there when Gabriel and Frances moved there. I wonder if it is possible that after the tannery failed that they went to live closer to Frances' parents? Any help is appreciated. Thanks, Nora

Just came across this post -- I have no idea where Crab Fork is. It's not in this area as far as I know.

If you got to google maps and enter "big laurel road, creston, nc," you can see the area. The house that my grandfather grew up in is still there, but it's not in the best shape.

I haven't looked further into Caroline Oliver. Patrick McCoy remains our brick wall.
