Surnames: GRAGSTON, GRAGSON, GREGSON, GREGSTON
I have the unfortunate task of trying to find my gr gr grandfather whose name was William J GRAGSON (or any of the variant spellings listed above) He was born NC 23 Feb 1837 & came to TX in 1870- died 24 Feb 1887 in Jack Co TX. The hunt for this man has been futile, as all I have known is that he was married to a woman in NC circa 1854 named Mary Ellen & they had children Martha 1855, James Newton 1858 (who is buried beside William in Jack Co TX) & John H 1866 -all born NC (according to 1870 Grayson Co TX Census) In 1872 William remarried to Mary Jane NEWMAN in Grayson Co TX. They had 10 children, all born in TX.
I have just found that William joined Co. I 57th NC Inf on 4 Jul 1862, as William J GRAGSTON and later a man named John H GRAGSTON (brother ?) joined the same unit on 10 Feb 1863.
Can anyone help me with this line? Are there any GRAGSTON/GRAGSON/GREGSTON descendants or researchers still in Alamance Co NC? Or *any* place else?? Any info is appreciated...
