Am researching family of M. D. (Melathon Dewain)THOMPSON b. Sept. 30 1848 in WI. I believe he married Ann E. Lewis on Jan. 6, 1870 in Columbia County WI. M. D. is later found in Wyoming County NY married to a Clara Bartlett. Clara and M.D. had one child that I know of, a girl named Henrietta. M.D. and Henrietta are both buried in the Warsaw Cemetery, Warsaw, NY, Wyoming County. Are you researching this THOMPSON family?

Yes they did. However, censuses were lost many years ago (except for scattered fragments). The ones that mostly survive are 1875, 1915, 1925. They would be at the county historian or clerk. You won't find them indexed online except for small partials from a couple towns.

Birth records for Barre, VT show the births of Thankful and son Almon Fisher to Asa and Susannah Nelson Salter Fisher. According to MI census info there were apparently two more children born while the family was in NY, one of whom would appear to be Betsey, though I've found no proof of her relationship thus far. Henry Whaley md Betsey quite shortly following the death of his first wife, Thankful.

Asa appears to be the son of Timothy and Patty (Bruce) Fisher of Hartland, VT. He is clearly related to this family and appears in a family land distribution in VT. However, the baptismal record on file for their son Asa is dated five years prior to when this Asa would have been born- the conclusion seeming to be that an earlier son named Asa died and the one who md Susan Salter is a second Asa.

Since it had been 10 years since my previous posting (!), some of the info you shared I had already come across in the census records, but I am interested in the move of this family to Washington. Do you have any census data or further information on that?

I am connected to the Fisher line rather than the Whalleys. Henry Whalley had been previously married to Thankful Fisher, probably Betsey's sister and definitely Asa and Susan's daughter, prior to his marriage go Betsey. Do you have any proof that Betsey is also their daughter?

Asa and Susan both died in the summer of 1850 and are buried in Michigan. The date on Asa's marker indicates that he was age 61 in 1850.

It just is such a puzzle for me, I have followed all of our Phillip and Mary's family in Ontario and the ones that left for Wisconson and Alberta, Canada. Doesn't hurt to keep checking.
Does anyone know anything about a Philip Church from Wyoming County New York. He was in one of the early census as a cooper from there. I am looking for descendants of Philip Church born about 1812 somewhere in New York. He moved to Brant County, Ontario, Canada but came back to NY to have a son John H. Church born in Oswego County in 1848. Most of his siblings were born in Canada.. this is such a puzzle. Philips spouse was Mary Johnson from Canada. My husband had his DNA done and we are looking for a match.

Hi, I am trying to find out if there is any way I could find a marriage between an Arza Dibble and a Love Densmore that according to their son's Civil War pension info were married in Warsaw:

"Arza stated he married Love (Densmore) the 18th of January 1828 in Warsaw, New York on the Civil War pension file papers he completed to get his son Arza's pension money after Love died. Two women who knew Love stated they were married March 18, 1830 in Warsaw, New York. The women's names were Mary Perkins and Lydia Whitney. "

Is there anyone who could lead me in the right direction? Arza and Love are my great great grandparents. Love died in Conneautville, Crawford, PA on 2/18/1872, and I have been told that Arza died in Ashtabula Ohio after 1881. They came to Conneautville, PA shortly after they were married as they only had one child born in Warsaw ( supposedly) and his name was Milo. He was born abt 1831 in Warsaw, and died Aug 29, 1862 in the Civil War. Thank you very much....Sandy

I have a Densmore family that started out in New Hampshire, then the parents died in Vermont (Abraham Dinsmore/Love Leeman) , but some of the children ended up in New York in this area, my ancestor is an Ephraim Densmore that died in Wyoming, he had a brother named George ( possibly Washington) Densmore that was born aby 12/12/1787.....do you think there is any link????
Don't know if you are still monitoring this board? My GGG Grandfather was John Nichols. He was born in NH in Aug 1793 and moved with his parents to Arcade about 1811. He fought in the battle of 1812 and in 1848 moved to Wisconsin. His father's name is John and I know he fought in the revolutionary war. I wonder if this is the John you are talking about. Do you have any information you can share?

Does anyone have any information on tin peddlers in Wyoming Co. around 1880? My Grandfather who lived in Wethersfield had his occupation listed as tin peddler on the 1880 census. I'm curious as to exactly what that would have entailed. Any information would be greatfully received.

I don`t believe the Philip Church living in Wyoming Co. on the 1850 census is the one you`re looking for. He is a cooper & his wife is Mary but he does not have a son John. He is also on the census in Wyoming Co. in 1870 & 1880. I can`t locate him in 1860. I checked your tree & your Philip Church is of Brant Co., ON. The 1851 census in Burford, Brant Co. shows the family. Phillip is age 51 & is listed as an innkeeper. One of his children in John, age 7. This family is on the 1871 census in Brant South, Burford. Philip is age 69 although the index says 59. The actual page shows 69 with a slight "tick" over the 6 making it look a bit like a 5. Philip is a carpenter on this census.

Pat R.

I'm rather a beginner at this whole genealogy thing -- in skills and in the amount of time I've been at it. All of the copies I have were printed during a recent visit to the Denver Public Library with a friend who offered to show me some genealogy ropes. We used the library's Ancestry.com membership to look up census records.

My conjecture had been that Thankful and Betsey Fisher had been sisters but I have not yet found any proof of that.

I'm connected to the Whaley side (I'm assuming you misspelled it and not that we're talking about two different families).

Here's what we found as far as census records for the family as they moved west to Washington.

I have a partial copy of a Iowa state census taken in 1856 in Burr Oak, Winneshiek County. They were apparently only recording adult males. The entry simply reads, "H H Whaley", gives his age as 42, says he was born in New York, and gives his profession as "Mason."

Next I have them on the 1860 Census in Winneshiek Co., Iowa. It lists Henry H. Whaley, 46 as a "farmer"; Betsey N., 33, of Michigan; Alfred O., 19, of Michigan; Florence A., 13, of Michigan; Albert H, 8, of Michigan; and Adelbert M, 2, of Iowa.

Also listed in that household is a Susan Manning, 16, of New York. So far I have no clues as to who she was or why she was with the family at that time.

Next is the 1870 Census taken in Pawnee County, Nebraska. Here we have H.H. Whaley, 56, a farmer, born in NY. Next is B.F., 43, "keep house", and listed as being from NY. A.M, 17, is a farmer from Michigan and A.M., 12, also a "farmer" from Iowa.

The next household's entry is that of A.O. Whaley, 30, a farmer, from Michigan. Then A.M., 28, "keep house". Her birthplace is a funny squiggle that looks like a capital O. [I assume this is Anna M. Shellhorn.] The final entry is F.E. [for Flora Ella], 4, born in Nebraska.

The 1880 Census is from Ellsworth County, Kansas, and interestingly the Ennumerator is A.O. Whaley himself.

Again both households are listed next to each other with A.O. Whaley, 39, a farmer, listed first. Then Annie, 37, of Ohio [father from Penn. and mother from Mich.]. Then Flora, 14; George, 11; and Harry, 7 (all born in Neb.). Last comes Frank, 1, born in Kansas.

The next household is headed by A.M. Whaley, 23. H.H. Whaley, 66, relationship: father, profession given as "stone mason". B.F., 53, relationship: mother, profession given as "housekeeper".

Also in that household are 4 more people, the names of which I cannot clearly decipher. There's a Kate McC..?, a white female, 19, "boarder", "schollar" [sic] born in Ohio to Ohio parents.

Next is a white male, aged 20, relationship: servant, profession: farmer. Then two more white males, aged 24 and 23 respectively, no relationship stated, both farmers

The next record I have is a North Yakima, Tacoma Co., Washington 1910 Census.

The record is for Earl A. Whaley, 27, marriage 1 for 2 years, of Kansas (parents being from Missouri (Iowa?) and New York. His wife, Edith H., 25, marriage 1 for 2 years, having one child/one living child, born in Montana of parents from Missouri/Missouri. And their son, Veryl L, 8/12, born in Washington.

I believe that Edith H. is actually Hester Edith [my mother remembers that as being her grandmother's real name though she always went by Edith officially and "Dolly" to family. Apparently she was very small as an infant and was kept warm in the oven!]

The 1930 Census for Seattle, King County, Washington lists A.E. Whaley, 48, as the "head", married at 25, born in Kansas, occupation: steamship captain. His wife is Edith, 45, married at 23, born in Montana. Then come Veryl, 20; Glenn, 19; and Jean, 15 -- all born in Washington.

Jean is my mother's mother.

I was also able to find a birth record for Glenn Mario Whaley, bd 10-29-1910 in Yakima born to Arthur Earl Whaley and Edith Fields. And a death record for Veryl L. Whaley, died 10-28-1986 in Shelton born about 1909. And I found some ship manifests listing both Glenn and Veryl as crew members on various ships.

Apparently A.E. Whaley died when he was about 50 so his appearance in the 1930 would have been his last.

What I can't work out is that my mother remembers her grandmother as being a "Pulliam." The Montana part fits, in fact my mother remembers her grandmother as being specifically from Missoula. And we have an old photo of "Mr. and Mrs. Pulliam". But I'm sure I have the right Whaley family in Washington so I'm still puzzling of the Edith Fields/Pulliam part of the equation.

Re: Asa Fisher of China (Arcade)NY

I have a copy of a partial census record that I believe is from Iowa in 1850. It lists Asa Fisher of Vermont and Susan (N.) of Massachusetts as living with Henry H. Whaley of NY, his wife, Betsey also of NY, and their children Alfred and Florence A. (both born in Michigan).

By then, both Fishers were in their 60's. Susan is listed as 62 -- which seems to fit. Asa's age is difficult to read on my copy -- looks either like 69, 67, or 61.

I believe Betsey is the daughter of Asa and Susan Fisher. She married Henry Harrison Whaley; to the best of my knowledge, she was his second wife.

The Whaley's migrated from NY to Michigan to Iowa. I have Henry and Betsey on a census again in Iowa in 1860 but neither Asa nor Susan is listed.

I have Henry and Betsey Whaley in 1870 in Nebraska; in 1880 in Kansas. They eventually ended up in Washington state.

Yes, we have been in touch before and you have the lineage correct. I have been trying to expand on John Brown' s children and siblings. I will have to check my records to see if I have Jennie Simpson in the lineup. I am getting so many, I don't have everyone set in my mind. I am at the same e mail address.

Gilmartins in Wyoming cty New York

I am looking for information on John Gilmartin (born ~1800 in Ireland). He married Mary Murray (born ~1801 in Ireland), emmigrated from Ireland during potato famine, and ended up in Eagle (aka Arcade, Bliss, China, Java, etc.) Wyoming cty New York. Mary died 1877, John died 1889, and appears to have had a younger brother that was born ~1801 and died 1895. John and Mary (and possibly Patrick) are buried (along with some of their children) in old St Mary's cemetary in East Arcade, NY. John and Mary and Patrick often spelled last name Gillmartin but following generations dropped one l (i.e. spelled Gilmartin). Mary came from Roscommon but what county in Ireland did John and Patrick come from?
