I have the book "The Family of John Stone", written by Truman Lewis Stone. John Stone was born abt 1610, came from England and settled in Guilford, CT. Many of his decendants moved to Wyoming County. I would be happy to look up any information.

My gtgt grandfather was Charles Jennison Stone. He was the son of Russell and Sallindy Stone born Mar 23, 1820. I would very much like to know if he is listed in your book. Russell may hae been the son of Nathan Stone who fought in the revolution.

Your Charles J. Stone is not in this family and so not in this book.. There is in Wyoming County another Russell Stone, b. 19 Mar 1776 VT d. 12 Sep 1846 and buried in Varysburg NY Cemetery. His 1st wife was Salinda Ward d. 23 Dec 1835 a sister of Buel Ward - possibly another Vermont family - also buried at Varysburg; 2nd wife was Mary Ann Pickle Trull d. 19 May 1862 age 61, bur. Varysburg also

What I've found is that your Russell and his brother Nathan were from Bennington VT. You might look in their records. Possibly his wife's family was also from VT. Good luck.

Hi Elizabeth,

I am very interested in your information on Nathan. We have not been able to get to him, but believe him to be Russells father. Of course there could have been a Nathan JR. I have Nathan born 1750 in R.I. fought in the battle of Bennington. Russell born in 1776 in Vermont, died in N,Y. I do not have proof of Nathan that is why I am looking for it now. there are others that are also looking to document this.

What I know about your Stone line came a few years ago in one of two ways: 1) from information sent me from the Wyoming NY County Historian's office and from which I learned that your Stones were from Bennington VT; or 2) while I was attempting to sort out the many people in CT, RI and NY c1780-1850, named "Russell Stone" or Stones who had "Russell" as part of their name. I found 17 of them thru census scans and thru Talcott's "Early Families of Guilford Ct". Having a Russell Stone in Orangeville NY and one in Sheldon NY - adjacent townships in Wyoming Co NY - at the same period was worrisome, so I spent sometime looking into your Russell's family. Your Russell and Nathan were usually right next to each other in censuses c. 1820-40 in Sheldon. I no longer have my notes on Nathan and he disappeared, but think that Doris Bannister, Wyoming Co. historian, can help you. There is a man in their files who is also working on your line and they can give you his name. Once I determined that this was not part of my line, I dropped my research on it.

Hi Elizabeth,
Thank you for the information. I have been on the same route also. I have been to Warsaw several times and Talked with Doris. My father was born near Sheldon, and I have tried everything I can think of. There are also two others working on this. They believe Nathan to be the father too, but no concrete proof. Thank you again for your time and energy that you have put into this. Have you come across the name Jennison. I think it is someones maiden name.

Have you looked at Rootsweb? There's a posting there that says Nathan Stone b. 1750 d. 1833 Shaftsbury Vt m Mercy mattison b. 20 May 1759. Children Eli b. 1804, Russell; Nathan; Uriah; Eliah; Prudence; Hannah; Mercy. You might chcek census records...

Also, p. 110, "Hist. of Bennington Co. VT" notes Nathan Stone, ensign of Second Company,Shaftsbury, in 2nd regiment, organized 28 May 1775. IF he really lived till 1833, you should be able to get pension records. If you're lucky, it'll list surviving children, and Russell was still alive.

Re; Jennison - I haven't seen anything, but isn't Mary Jennison the name of that white child kidnapped by Indians in Genesee Country very early in settlement days?

My mother was born in Sheldon - in "the Hollow".

There's a Charles Jenison (Jennison) listed in the 1830 census for Orangeville. Looks like he was born between 1780-1790.
It's possible that Russell had some relationship with this family, and named his son Charles Jennison Stone to honor him? There are also Wheelers living nearby. Charles Jennison Stone's wife Ruth Oatman was adopted and raised by a Wheeler family. Any connection, who knows?
