After studying the 1900 Census information of my 3rd-great grandmother, Carolina Hummel, I noticed that she has a boarder living with her named Antonia "Leratua," according to the person who indexed this record. What I have found interesting about this person is that she, like my 3rd-great grandmother, was born in Germany. Another interesting fact is that she had 12 children and only 1 was living at the time, which is giving me an odd suspicion that this Antonia "Leratua" is the mother of my 3rd-great grandmother.
The only problem is that I can't find any more information on this person to see if my assertion is correct. Can anybody take a look at this document and figure out what the actual surname is? Or better yet, can you find anything else on this person? I looked at the original census image and it appears to me that the name is Leratua as well, but that doesn't sound like a German name and there is no other documentation of her existence anywhere else.
