Joseph Richardson (Richeson/Richison)

Looking for this family. Joseph was the father of Eunice Richardson who was married to Levi Neal. They resided in Wolcott in 1820, Rose in the 1830, and Huron in 1840 before moving to Michigan. Joseph can be found in Wolcott in 1820, and Port Bay in 1830. In 1830 both he and his wife (unidentified at this point), were 60-69 years of age. I can't find them in 1840, so I'm assuming they both died in Wayne Co. Levi and Eunice's daughter Margaret L Neal married George Forris Fairbanks in Rose on 21 Apr 1845. In "Rose Neighborhood Sketches" her parents are given as John Neal and Eunice Richison. Her (Eunice's) death registration gives the surname as Richeson. Would like something that confirms that the Joseph Richardson in the censuses is in fact her father, gives her mother's name, and maybe even determines which variation of the surname is accurate :)
By the by, in the 1820 census, there was a young man living with Joseph and his wife, aged 16-25. Eunice was born c. 1798, so this is very probably a brother, but I have no idea what his name might be.

Thanks for any help on this one!
Levi and Eunice are my 4x great grands :)

Tiffany

Either the town or village of Wolcott should have a copy of his death record. Since Jabez is buried at North Wolcott Cemetery, it's most likely that he lived in the township so the Town of Wolcott would have the record. They were all written in books during that time so there was no actual certificate. The clerk would have to type the information on a certified document. I may try and get it when I go back to New York at the end of August.

From the information I have, his parents were Warner Douglass and Charity Remington. It would make sense since the middle name for Jabez is Remington. One source says that both possibly died in Hamilton, Indiana. In looking at marriage records for that state though, there is a Warner Douglass who married Caroline Brooks in 1830. The one we're looking at was still married to Charity Remington and residing at Victory, New York in 1850. The two were married in Vermont on February 13, 1806. As to when and where they died and where they are buried, I've yet to find out.

Another brother of Robert and Phillip, George H. Douglass, is interred at Huron Evergreen Cemetery.

Robert Beech Douglass was born in Huron, New York on December 2, 1839 and died on January 18, 1911 in Wolcott, New York. He is buried with his wife, Lucetta Miller, at Glenside Cemetery in Wolcott. Lucetta was born in Wolcott, New York on August 31, 1940 and died on February 27, 1931 in Wolcott, New York. The two were married in Wolcott on August 8, 1865.

http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=do...;

Jabez Remington Douglass and Catherine Polly Rood, parents of Robert Beech Douglass, are interred at North Wolcott Cemetery. Their graves are unmarked as far as I know. I'd have to get with the cemetery association for their exact locations which won't be until the end of August. Lucetta's mother, Jerusha Ward, is also buried at North Wolcott Cemetery. Her grave is marked. I don't know what became of her husband, Abram S. Miller.

http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=mi...;

From the information I have, Robert and Lucetta had twelve children...Robert, Jr., Eliza, Katie, Abram, Narles, Harriet, Alvina, Emeras, Cherrie, Albert, Adelbert and Rilla. Adelbert apparently died during childhood.

I’m not related to any member of this family.

This is your problem -

Facts you should know about the early census records –

All census records [1790 – 1840] prior to the 1850 census ONLY listed the head of household; whether male or female.

NO specific age was stated for any family member
NO place of birth was stated – city, state, or country
NO city, town, or village is stated – only the county; however some census takers listed the township
NO street address was stated
NO marital status was stated – single, married, widowed, or divorced
NO family relationship was stated – brother, sister, cousin, son, daughter, wife, inlaw, etc…
NO occupation was stated
NO parental birthplaces are stated
NO race was stated [but assume “white”]

1850, 1860 & 1870 census records do not show family relationships, marital status or parental birthplaces.

Step children are not enumerated as “step” children
Adopted children are not enumerated as “adopted”
Grand children are not enumerated as “grand children”
Orphaned children were not enumerated as "orphan"

1850 is the 1st census that shows all family members

1880 is the 1st census that shows parental birthplaces and family relationships +++

No family members were listed on the censusrecord from 1830 - 1850.

Who did he marry ????

Hello,
I am seeking more information on my great grandfather John Sarantis and his wife Sevasti. He was born Jan 7 1887 and died Aug 1980. He lived in Williamson, NY, Wayne County and had a son named Harry Sarantis who was born May 10 1924 and died in August 1995. Harry married Mary Sotir in Williamson, NY. Mary Sotir has four siblings, Alexander, Helen, Kay and Theodore Sotir. John and Sevasti immigrated from Niata, Greece. John immigrated to the US in 1907 at the age of 20.
Any information you have on John or his spouse Sevasti would be helpful and appreciated.

Stacia Smart
University of Connecticut
thank you for your interesting post. How wonderful of Harold DeBrine to have done so much work and to have it preserved.

You mention that you have information on DeBrine families. Would you happen to have any knowledge of a Margaret DeBrine. I have no idea who her parents were. She was born 16 Sept 1887 (social security death index) in NY (census records). I believe she is in the 1900 census in Sodus, as a servant. Also in the 1905 census as a servant with a different family in Sodus. About 1907-8 she married William Eastley and they had a son Ralph Eastley born in 1909.

While my research concerns mostly the Eastleys, I really would like to find out who her parents were, and siblings if possible.

Thanks for any ideas you can give me. Best wishes! Susan

I'm trying to find any additional information on a Livonia Douglass of Wolcott, New York. She was a daughter of Jabez Remington Douglass and Catherine Polly Rood...born on May 13, 1843. I've been trying to find out who she married so I can go on from that point on latter records. The latest I find her is on the 1860 U.S. Census, but she is still single at that time. There is a Livonia born around that time who was married to a Silas Cleveland, but it is not the one I'm looking for. No hits so far on Fulton History or the Wayne County Historian website. Any help regarding the two would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. :0)

I'm trying to find any additional information on a Reliance Catherine Douglass of Wolcott, New York. She was a daughter of Jabez Remington Douglass and Catherine Polly Rood...born on April 27, 1854. Reliance married someone with the last name of Heald sometime between 1870 and 1878. The two had a daughter, Carrie, born in either December 1879 or January 1880. I've only been able to find Reliance and Carrie as late as the 1880 U.S. Census. No hits so far on Fulton History or the Wayne County Historian website. Any help regarding the two would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. :0)

I know this is an old post, however I have info on Cleon Markell and his line, Cleon Carlos Markell was the son of Nelson F. Markell (Jul 1835-unk) and Helen McIntyre (Jul 1841-Unk) Of Penfield, NY and Arcadia, Wayne NY. Nelson F. Markell was the son of Carlos Markell(born abt 1806 Springfield, Otsego, NY died 25 Dec 1879 Penfield, NY, burial in Oakwood Cem.) and Mary Perkins (abt 1818 Oneida co. NY, died 2 Oct 1881 in Penfield, NY, burial in oakwood cem)she was the daughter of Abner and Lucy Perkins of Oneida co. to Monroe Co. She was named in her fathers will. Carlos Markell was the son of Henry Markell,(born abt 1776 died 16 Dec 1847 in Madison co. ny, he is buried in Oneida Castle Cem in same plot as son Richard and family. He remained in Springfield, NY untill he was aged, at some point before his death he went to Madison co. ny ) Carlos had 2 brothers that I know of, Richard (my line) of Vernon,Oneida NY, abd Oliver who remained in Sprinfield (except for 1855, he is living in Penfield, NY near Carlos) Henry Markell was the son of Jacob Markell(Merkel) of Springfield that died At the Battle of Oriskany 6 Aug 1777. Here is the source for that:
The centennial celebrations of the state of New York: prepared pursuant to a ...

By Allen C. Beach

18. Roster Of Oriskany. (Page 84.)

For several weeks in June and July, 1877, the Utica Herald appealed to the descendants of those engaged in the battle, and to all others, for names to make up a Roster of Oriskany, to preserve the names of all persons who took part in that important action. As the sum of its efforts, from all sources, that journal gathered the following list:

*Jacob Markell, Springfield (Descendant, Oliver Markell, Springfield Center);
I recently came accross an old newspaper article published November 17, 1818 in the Palmyra Register (Palmyra, NY) Volume:I Issue 52, Page 4:

Sheriff's Sale

....."I have seized and taken the goods and chattels of Daniel Tallmadge in my bailiwick, together with all that certain piece or parcel of land situated, lying and being in the town of Lyons known and distiguished as the south part of lot number eighty two, bounded on the west by Thomas Moon, on the north by ____McDaniel, on the south by the town line of Phelps, all of which prooperty I shall expose for sale at public auction at ASA LILLY's COFFEE HOUSE in the village of Palmyra on the 21st day of November next at 10 o'clock in the forenoon. dated October 10, 1818 N. Allen, Sh'ff

This would indicate that in 1818 Thomas Moon lived along the north town line of Phelps, in Lyons. What are the cemeteries located promanently around this area? Would there be a female Moon buried between 1820-1830 in any of these cemeteries?

LeeAnne
Curious about your Harrington family. Are they related to the Harrington family in Wayne County NY Butler and Savannah area?
I have a Nehemiah Harrington ancestor who had a brother Theophilus. They apparently had family in Vermont. Nehemiah's son James W Harrington born in 1837 apparently was raised by family in Vermont when his mother died.
Any connection? James ended up in Michigan in the late 1850's and raised a family in Calhoun County Michigan.
Even if not direct family; could they be extended family with common ancestors?

Ann

Hope I have some luck. Thanks again!

Thanks much for that.
That he died in Wayne Co. is still a partial assumption...

He lived in Red Creek with grandson (1930) prior to death, and is buried in Southside Cem @ Red Creek, only know the year from tombstone.

In the years before that his family was domociled in Oswego.

Well, I'm not local so.....visiting is not possible, perhaps I'll give the clerk at Red Creek a call.

Thanks again

If you know the exact location, i.e. village or town, the fastest way is to contact that entity. For example, if they died within the boundaries of the Village of Ontario, in the town of Ontario, Wayne Co, I would call the Village Clerk first to ascertain if they have the record. If not,I would then call the Town Clerk. There is not a central vital records office in Wayne County, like there is in next door Monroe Co (Westfall Rd.). You can get the exact certificate number by consulting the Vital Records Index microfiche which is available at Rochester Public Library, Syracuse Public Library, also in Buffalo and Binghamton and at the State Archives (Albany) 11th floor. If you go to NY State Archives, you can drop off your vital records request form(& $fee) on the 11th floor in the "Express Box" and you will get a response in 2 weeks, as they requests are shuttled over to the Dept. of Vital Records and receive expedited treatment. Sending to NYS Vital records(Albany) straight can take 6-8 months for a response. I have stopped in at Clerk's offices in Wayne and asked them to look up a record. If they have it, then I pay the fee and get a copy. Hope this helps.

Shiela>>>you are on a roll!...I sent the first reply before I saw the other messages...thank you so much!...I love "theories"...and it gives me a starting point. The weird thing is..the other Sampsons there in Hillsdale with Henry were Newland, James, John and Warner...they all lived within walking distance of each other. All born in Wayne Co. New York. I sent for their Probates..none for Henry I'm afraid but I did get John, James and Warner..No mention of Henry in theirs...but I did not ask about Newland! Will call tomorrow. A friend is going to try to find Henry's 50th Wedding Anniversary Party news article. Those usually have tons of Family in them. And this is also strange..first born sons were usually named after the Father of the Mother and the Father of the Father...Henry named his first born son Wellington Joel. His first wife's fathers name was Joel and one of his sons is named Charles...Again thank you! I have to lay this all out on paper...Sincerely, Wendy
